John's singing lead on this song. It was a piano you heard but was sped up to sound like a harpsicord. Rubber Soul is one of my favourite Beatles albums. Thanks for reacting!
On 22 October, the solo was recorded with the tape running at half speed, so when played back at normal pace the piano was twice as fast and an octave higher, solving the performance challenge and also giving the solo a unique timbre, reminiscent of a harpsichord

The Beatles are and were head and shoulders above every other band EVER!! I was 10 when I first heard them, I'm 68 now and still enjoying their music!!😂😂🇬🇧🇬🇧
I would like to take a moment to appreciate Ringo's style and rhythmic choices that contribute so powerfully to all their amazing music. Having Ringo fill in for the AWOL Pete in Hamburg was more than sheer luck it was divine intervention.
This particular song shows off how brilliant Ringo is a drummer. No he’s not Neil Peary - but his rhythmic sense, and the percussion instruments he uses, are always brilliant.
Ringo gets dissed somewhat when talking about the greatest drummers, but NO drummer would've worked better with this band. The other 3 Beatles all said that everything clicked when Ringo arrived.
They wrote almost all of their songs themselves and have sold more records than anyone worldwide to this day. They were the voice of the 60's generation.Listen to them in release date order and you can hear them mature musically
Did you know when someone made a mistake on a take in the studio, it was hardly ever Ringo. Ringo hardly EVER made an error. Underrated drummer!!😉👍👍👍👍💖💗💞
I was going to suggest those two exact albums. They really complement each other and when I hear this one song, it makes me want to put on Rubber Soul from start to finish.
SGT PEPPER gets all the attention, and we all know why. But"REVOLVER was their first "mature" statement. Of course RUBBER SOUL is a masterpiece, but (to me) it's a transitionary album, with one foot in the past and one foot pointing forward. But everything on REVOLVER suggests there's no turning back. All that said, ABBEY ROAD is my favorite album of theirs. Their most mature statement, and sadly, their final statement. It's a bit like comparing Beethoven's 5th Symphony (revolutionary!) to his 9th Symphony ("here I am, this is me, and this - as an artist - is what I want to say.") Of course, as with Beethoven and with The Beatles, why choose? Each piece is so important in its own way, and all are masterpieces. a careful reading can only hope to distinguish historical impact. The quality is already a given.
My favorite John song. You can tell he was really singing from the heart on this one. It still amazes me how much their music evolved in such a short amount of time.
When my husband and I made the difficult but amicable decision to separate and get divorced, he sent this to me a few days later. It still breaks my heart when I hear it, such raw emotions.
Back in 1982 I was working for a local TV station and I was sent to cover a high school graduation. To make it different I put the video I took to this song. So many called the station to ask to show it again. The station did and it made me pretty happy.
Not really a Beatles fan. But definitely can appreciate the frequent genius of their songwriting. First time I've ever heard this song in full. And… Wow. Kinda Stunned.
@@lynnarthur1411Sounds interesting. Will explore. and @Steve just listened to "Coming Up" from McCartney after it came up on my feed. Unreal. The songwriting, especially from the main two, is just uncanny.

There is absolutely no doubt the Beatles were the best, this is so incredible, actually rubber soul is a brilliant album, no one like them, and the piano is just astounding. I liken the Beatles to someone like Mozart.
It really is a great album. So much hype on Sgt Pepper, Let It Be, Abbey Road (all great in their own right) but the earlier albums such as this are amazing too!!
The thing about art is that it's all subjective. The Beatles are the best to you and a ton of other people, but to some people they aren't that good. I could give you examples of why they are technically worse than Mozart. I could give you examples of why the melodic, death metal band Opeth is far superior to the Beatles in terms of song writing. I really love the Beatles -- my musical taste wouldn't be what it is today without having heard them throughout my childhood, but to say there is absolutely no doubt they were the best is just ignorant.
@@jasonknotts1854 you are totally right! One men’s meat is another’s poison. But almost everyone has their own favourites. And at a very very early age, I listened to both early Yes and Genesis, and love prog rock! Indeed there’s a group called Greenslade who were only around for 3 or 4 years and did totally understanding music. Yet almost no one has heard of them!
The instrument is actually a piano piece their producer, Sir George Martin, played on a regular piano at normal speed (his speed). It was sped up to fit the song speed and consequently sounds almost like a harpsichord.
How in the hell can you pick one great Beatles song‼️ Let’s just say this is one, just one of my favorites with some deep lyrics and meaningful as well… Love it
This song gets to everyone, and I’m not surprised to see 500+ comments quickly appear. I haven’t listened to it since the pandemic started, and wow, it really strikes my heart deep this time.
This was my favorite Beatles song from the moment I heard it so many of these years later. It's a perfect piece of poetry set to a perfect melody and the harmonies are what made The Beatles stand out. This is one of John's finest songs, a simple uncomplicated poem that speaks plainly to everyone's heart, easily understood and wonderfully tugs at your heartstrings. It ranks right up there with "Imagine". Thank you, John, from my heartstrings. And, bro, I'm so glad you appreciate what you're hearing. Any song by The Beatles is worth a listen. Rock on!
I don't know how I ended up on your channel but every one I've stumbled across has just smacked me full on the feelings. Been a life-long Beatles fan but given the pandemic I heard this song in a whole new light and it brought me to tears. Whatever magic you are doing please keep it up.
Ringo's perfect beat brings this song to another level, along with John's beautiful lyrics and George Martin's electric piano solo in the middle 8. Timeless.

When I was battling cancer, without getting too dramatic about it I was in a bit of strife and seriously thought my days were numbered. I speak to my brother almost daily online and we are both into music, all my family are, and I told him I’d like this song played at my funeral. It’s just so beautiful. And moves me, especially as it’s one of Johns tracks. Thankfully I’ve been in remission for a couple of years now so, hopefully, I can listen to this song on UA-cam for a while yet.
For me the impact of this song is in the lyrics. The Fab Four were capable of genuine poetry. This one still resonates even more for those of us who are now in our sixties and seventies. The boys were wise beyond their years.
Just beautiful!! So glad I was alive and got to experience all the great music of the 60's and 70's, The music was so unbelievably fantastic!! I'm 68 now and love your channel, thank you✌
It's John on lead vocal. Have always loved this song, showcases John's voice and his writing. Another John favorite is "Across the Universe" I ADORE the lyrics in that song.
I remember laying on my sofa listening to this when I was a kid and loving it without fully having the understanding I have of it today. Paul & John were like in their 20's when they wrote this! HA! So amazing. I wrote the lyrics to this on a paper bag and gave it to my (husband now) back when we were dating. It's one of the sweetest love songs, in my opinion ever written.
I have always loved this song, as did pretty much everyone. It’s just one more incredible love letter to the world. Those of us who were there should remember how very lucky we were to have lived it. We’d buy our new albums and hang out with a group of friends, listening to the whole thing over and over, crawling over liner notes trying to figure out the meanings of songs, etc. It was awesome, but I’m thrilled that decades later, other young people are doing the same, just on a much bigger level. Amazing. Keep ‘em coming. The Beatles discography is immense considering the short time they were together, but in my opinion, they are the 🐐. 🤘🏼
This song is the first of three songs based on John's life in Liverpool. Inspired by the bus ride he used to take from his Aunt's house to school passing Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, John started writing. Eventually, he split the work into three individual songs.
I will forever think of my mother when I even see the cover of the Rubber Soul album. It is her favorite Beatles album, and she loves this song in particular.
I was 13 when Rubber Soul was released and all I can say is “I didn’t know what I didn’t know”. Still listen to the whole album occasionally, just to refresh myself to the brilliance of these beautiful songs. Still amazed…
John wrote this as a response to the acclaim Paul received for 'Yesterday'....I used to sing this to my then baby son as we use to swing on my porch swing....he's 28 years old now and I still remember....

I'm 68 this year, and although I recall this song when it first came out, (and of course many times since), tonight I listened to it with fresh ears...it's special...thanks mate!
By this stage their lyrics were much influenced by Dylan. However, there is a sweetness to songs like this. Dylan was too rigorous to do sweet. That little high note at the end showcases the Beatles charm and playfulness.
@@Grizazzle Hello there. Thanks for being so courteous. I will merely provide the quote "Dylan leads the way". I am as much a fan of the Beatles as I am of Dylan. Likewise, he would never have gone electric without then. - Lets keep it civil, eh?
@@jameshannagan7830 Certainly the Stones played their part. However, the Beatles encouraged and taught the Stones how to write their own songs. Jagger/Richards would never have written Satisfaction without that push, plus the lyric-writing inspiration of Dylan. So, yes and no. We are just lucky they all healthily competed because their combined mid-sixties output is a treasure.
One of my fave introspective songs by the them! That was John's voice that was standing out the most in the harmony. The solo instrument was a harpsichord, which does have keys like a piano
George Martin played on a regular piano at half speed an octave lower than the song. Then he sped up the tape to make it sound like a harpsichord. Martin really helped The Beatles a lot in the studio. I got this bit of info from a book 'All The Songs' which goes over the production of, well, all of their songs.
When i met my now husband in High School this was playing. I also walked down the isle to an instrumental version of this. This song has a lot of meaning to me. So special.
It's a harpsichord, an old cousin of the piano. The song saddens me and wakens me to life. Oddly, an episode of Star Trek, a protaganist in the form of a Victorian or Edwardian era was playing the instrument.
It takes a few hearings of Beatles songs to distinguish between Paul and John, but this is John. And the baroque passage is piano recorded slowly and played back faster.
In My Life was written and sung by John with Paul and George singing background vocals. George Martin played the keyboard solo. I would love to see you do A Day in the Life.
My sister's friend (they are both in their 70's now) went to the Beatles concert in Brisbane, Australia, 1964. Something she kept for yonks was a streamer (dark blue) that Ringo had touched. Yes, I think it is John on lead vocals - his Liverpudlian accent is strong. My claim to fame was seeing Paul Mac in concert here in Brissy in 2017 - never in my life did I think I would see a Beatle in concert. If ever you get to Liverpool, go to see the Beatles museum - it opened in 1985 and I've been there - just spectacular if you're a fan.
My favorite Beatles song. I always thought of it as a love song about a person's one true love in their life. Just listen to lyrics. "But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one compares with you", "in my life, I love you more". Makes me think of one special lady.
This is pretty widely regarded as one of their absolute best songs, which given it's the Beatles, by extension makes it one of the best popular songs of all-time (imho).
One of John's many, many masterpieces. Superb! Rubber Soul was the moment they transformed from the suits and expectation and became their true selves through their imaginative expression.
So true Earl. I remember The Beatles on Ed Sullivan and I was a fan for life. I remember so many adults at that time complaining about their music and their long hair. I remember thinking how these are 4 guys wearing white shirt and ties under a suit. Some real bad influences huh? I think a lot of those folks came around to liking them.
@@mikeguerrero72 I think they must have. It was Brian Epstein who dressed them up and made them a boy band but that didn't last long thankfully. John performed with a toilet seat around his neck in Hamburg and they were forever getting into trouble and up to all sorts. Typical youth I guess. I absolutely adore this song. I'm on in my mid 40's so wasn't around for them then but grew up with Beatle songs as the soundtrack to my own youth (along with Bowie and Iggy Pop of course). Lennon was an incredible writer. The sound is what it is and I personally loved George Martin's production. It may not have had a hard edge but the innovation and quirkiness are two of the many things that continue to keep the tracks sounding vital and fresh to these aging ears. Good to meet you Mike!

I like these reactions too because seeing someone react to songs I cared about and still care about is hopefully going to inspire others to do those same styles of music. I believe a good song will always be a good song no matter what. The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five and so many other groups made great tunes, at least to me anyway. The instrumental solo in the middle was played by producer George Martin on a piano, recorded at half speed and then when played back at normal speed it sounded like a harpsichord.
Is that true? I just assumed it was a harpsichord.
@@nadzee7101 Yep, I've read this multiple places.
Professor Walrus so cool to know. After all these years. Great piece of insight!
The european name is 'spinetta' George Martin used this name in one of his interviews
George Martin was so incredibly creative and innocative.
This is my favorite Beatles song! John’s vocal is memorable
Mine too.
The Beatles are and were head and shoulders above every other band EVER!! I was 10 when I first heard them, I'm 68 now and still enjoying their music!!😂😂🇬🇧🇬🇧
My story is exactly like yours! 100%. I was 10 when I first heard them, I'm 68 now and still loving their music!
This was played at my dads funeral. Such a beautiful song and reminds me of him. X
My moms funeral as well.
I was just thinking I would like this song to be played when I go - becomes more and more beautiful the older I get
I would like to take a moment to appreciate Ringo's style and rhythmic choices that contribute so powerfully to all their amazing music. Having Ringo fill in for the AWOL Pete in Hamburg was more than sheer luck it was divine intervention.
No one could ever work well in a Beatles tune other than Ringo. He totally new what to do.
Premium drummer! He was actually left handed drummer but played right hand. That attributes to his unique style as well.🥁❤️🇨🇦
This particular song shows off how brilliant Ringo is a drummer.

One of the best songs about aging and maturing...I always found it outstanding but year after year it gets more meaningful 💜
Now you're getting into the classic Beatles that really put them on the map! The albums "Revolver" and "Rubber Soul" is some of their best stuff!

My Daddy was born in 1930 and was a huge fan... this was one of His favorites 🥰
When John Lennon was shot, the BBC played this song on repeat for the whole night.
I'll never forget that night, when I heard the news on the radio....
My favorite John song. You can tell he was really singing from the heart on this one. It still amazes me how much their music evolved in such a short amount of time.
This is John's greatest song IMO
IMO, the Beatle's greatest song.
A Day in The Life for me

John's song: In My Life.
Paul's song: Eleanor Rigby.
George's song: Something.
Ringo's song: Octopus' Garden.

When my husband and I made the difficult but amicable decision to separate and get divorced, he sent this to me a few days later. It still breaks my heart when I hear it, such raw emotions.
You made me cry
You made me cry too
Add me to the list. I am in tears.
waaoo so sad
Yeah, I felt this comment, too. Tears.
Back in 1982 I was working for a local TV station and I was sent to cover a high school graduation. To make it different I put the video I took to this song. So many called the station to ask to show it again. The station did and it made me pretty happy.
This is John singing here. Love your reaction, always a pleasure.
John was the lead vocalist, but you’re right. The harmonies are awesome.
I can't listen to this without tears in my eyes. It's so beautiful.
Grabs me the same way every time - it invokes so many memories - good and bad, happy and sad!
Not really a Beatles fan. But definitely can appreciate the frequent genius of their songwriting. First time I've ever heard this song in full. And… Wow. Kinda Stunned.
If you're not a Beatles fan, you haven't heard the right songs or heard them in the right context. This is indeed one of their finest.
The album “Rubber Soul” turned this Motown girl into a Beatles fan. Check out the entire album 😊

I love to see young people's reactions to the Beatles' music it just makes you see that their music is still loved today as when it was first released
This is the "Beatles" to me... the song means so much, to so many. Peace✌🙏

@@footballlover9207 absolutely right. I love the way, that the Beatles were only around a few years, yet they did so many different types of music.
" One men’s meat is another’s poison. " indeed...or as French Fisherman say "One Frenchman's fish is another Frenchman's poisson".....
John had a very distinctive voice and a lot of range. He could sing sweetly like on this song or belt out a rocker.
His range was limited compared to Paul McCartney but he definitely had a beautiful distinctive voice.
True, and sometimes both inside of the same song. 🎵 🎶 🎵
@@thebaobabs206 paul mcCartney sings high as fuck man
The instrument is actually a piano piece their producer, Sir George Martin, played on a regular piano at normal speed (his speed). It was sped up to fit the song speed and consequently sounds almost like a harpsichord.
I always thought it WAS a harpsichord!
My favorite band...and this song is so touching. It shows how intimately these guys could write songs.
Beautiful.
Thanks!✌💗🎶😁
I feel this song in my soul. As a woman who has reached mid-life, it makes so much sense.
How in the hell can you pick one great Beatles song‼️
Let’s just say this is one, just one of my favorites with some deep lyrics and meaningful as well… Love it
This song gets to everyone, and I’m not surprised to see 500+ comments quickly appear.
Timeless.
It’s an acoustic piano sped up to sound like a harpsichord.

It's primarily John singing. Check out "If I Fell." Another great Beatles song with great harmonies.
One of my favourite Beatles' tracks
YES - “If I Fell”!
So many of their best songs, like this one, were never released as a single.
Ringo nails it here (again)! ...and the harmonies!
For me the impact of this song is in the lyrics. The Fab Four were capable of genuine poetry. This one still resonates even more for those of us who are now in our sixties and seventies. The boys were wise beyond their years.
There are only three band that makes me feel likes magic exist; Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Beatles. ✌❤🇮🇹

My FAVORITE Beatles song EVER. Always makes me cry
Rubber soul is an album I never tire of listening to. 💘
John wrote this.
John wrote and sang this one.
@0:46. Congratulations, my friend. That smile has been smiled 100s of billions of times, by everyone who listened to this before you. It's universal.
Easily one of my top 5 Beatles songs. But the older I get, the more it makes my tear up a bit. Darn sentimentality.
This was our father daughter dance song at her wedding. It was the perfect song.
i danced with my mom to this at my wedding. cheers!
This song is the first of three songs based on John's life in Liverpool. Inspired by the bus ride he used to take from his Aunt's house to school passing Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, John started writing. Eventually, he split the work into three individual songs.
This is in my top 5 Beatles songs. Gorgeous. Heartfelt love. We're so lucky to be the ones that catch this art
I HAVE BEEN READING COMMENTS AND IT'S NICE TO KNOW HOW SONGS CAN REMIND PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT THINGS. IT'S HAPPENED TO ME PLENTY OF TIMES 💖X
I will forever think of my mother when I even see the cover of the Rubber Soul album. It is her favorite Beatles album, and she loves this song in particular.
One of my favourite songs of all time. Perfection.
I was 13 when Rubber Soul was released and all I can say is “I didn’t know what I didn’t know”.
Still listen to the whole album occasionally, just to refresh myself to the brilliance of these beautiful songs. Still amazed…
The piano solo was played by George Martin. It was recorded at half speed and sped up in the final mix.
John wrote this as a response to the acclaim Paul received for 'Yesterday'....I used to sing this to my then baby son as we use to swing on my porch swing....he's 28 years old now and I still remember....
Poem 070: Sentimental Moment or Why Did the Baguette Cross the Road? By Robert Hershon
Don't fill up on bread
I say absent-mindedly
The servings here are huge
My son, whose hair may be
receding a bit, says
Did you really just
say that to me?
What he doesn't know
is that when we're walking
together, when we get
to the curb
I sometimes start to reach
for his hand
I think this is one of my favorite Beatle's songs.
Love this song. It's very personal but everyone can relate to it as they get older and realise their world has changed.
I'm 68 this year, and although I recall this song when it first came out, (and of course many times since), tonight I listened to it with fresh ears...it's special...thanks mate!
0:46 this is what my heart does listening to the Beatles, look at that smile creep across. Great reaction, bro.
By this stage their lyrics were much influenced by Dylan. However, there is a sweetness to songs like this. Dylan was too rigorous to do sweet.
That little high note at the end showcases the Beatles charm and playfulness.
Poppycock. The whole Dylan influence thing is waaaay overstated and mostly perpetuated by Dylan fans.
@@Grizazzle Hello there. Thanks for being so courteous. I will merely provide the quote "Dylan leads the way". I am as much a fan of the Beatles as I am of Dylan. Likewise, he would never have gone electric without then. - Lets keep it civil, eh?
@@alipanroosendaal9503 I always thought it was the Stones that the most to do with Dylan going electric.
It’s a John falsetto. Superb!
John is primary. His voice is amazing. Such a beautiful song. One of my favorites ♥️.
Wrong. It's a piano sped up by taping technique.
It’s too easy to overlook the drumming in this song, but Ringo does an excellent job.
One of John Lennon’s most prolific songs. A reminiscent view of life and love.
One of my 'funeral songs' It's written in my will.
My fav of the four. It's fantastic how people still get them to this day.
@@emander8340 so very true again Earl. I think once they knew they were a success here in the U.S. they got to be more themselves. I'm 68 and after hearing that first song, I was hooked. Like you, John was my guy in the group but I can't deny those harmonies with Paul. George also had his place in music along with Ringo. Some of Ringo's best drumming is in Day in the Life. With each verse his drumming gets more beats. Rubber Soul along with Abby Road and Sgt. Pepper are fantastic. Actually, Beatles 65 has a lot of my favorites too.
Mr. Moonlight, No Reply and too many others to remember. Just a fantastic group of guys and losing John so soon really hurt. I was watching that football game when Cosell announced John had been killed. I so hoped it was a mistake be sadly, it wasn't. Where were you when you heard about John?
@@mikeguerrero72 Hi Mike, I was likely running around asking for biscuits as I was only 4 back in 1980. I used to sing imagine with my back to everyone when I was that age so my Dad must have told me at the time as he was a massive fan when he was alive (maybe jamming with him now, who knows)! The four work perfectly together and I do love the other three but aye, John for me. Paul could rock and sound sickly sweet at the same time and of course he is a fantastic song writer. Ringo still looks great and is the oldest by a few months over John. I was in work when George died. I remember that well. It must have been thrilling to hear them for the first time and at an age you were able to understand.
My own kids know the Beatles too of course. Today's music is completely different. Everything is too precise and perfect (plus sounding the same, though that could just be because of growing older, not sure). Each generation thinks they know more than the last though haha. I'm delighted I discovered reaction videos to the songs and artists I hold so dear and even better is that it is people from a different generation and culture. For me it shows how music crosses any divide or differences people may have culturally. Jayveetv is outstanding. Lovely young guy who makes me smile at his passion and delight. 😊 oh aye and Ringo is just perfect. Underrated drummer. I think people like to say he's no good just for something to gripe about at times. It wouldn't have been the same if any one of them had not been in the band. The sound is what it is and I personally loved George Martin's production. It may not have had a hard edge but the innovation and quirkiness are two of the many things that continue to keep the tracks sounding vital and fresh to these aging ears. Good to meet you Mike!
@@emander8340 if you haven't seen it, search the night John Lennon died on UA-cam. Because it's history, I think any Beatles fan should see it. It tells a sad story but it's a night that put me in a sad state of mind for several days.
I like these reactions too because seeing someone react to songs I cared about and still care about is hopefully going to inspire others to do those same styles of music. I believe a good song will always be a good song no matter what. The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five and so many other groups made great tunes, at least to me anyway. My dad was a musician so I grew up hearing all kinds of music. I like songs from just about every style. From Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett to The Rolling Stones and The Animals, if you like it, that's all that matters. Living in San Antonio Texas I hear lots of county rock but you're going to like what you're going to like and that's all that matters I guess. Good meeting you too Earl and music can bring folks together as good as anything. Keep listening and pass them down to your kids. You never know the good that can come from it.
