Mark, it is really great of you to do these videos. Because of you, my family now has all our questions answered and enjoys the game. This company should hire you!
Hi can I strongarm people for resources when I play a knight? My friends came to an agreement where while you cant ask for a specific card you want and just get them for free to keep you from playing a robber on them, you can force a 2-1 trade so you still do get an additional card but through trade.
*Settlers of Catan* Is one of my favorite (and most popular) German-Style board games. What makes it uber-cool is that the board is randomly setup at the start of each game forcing players to come up with a different strategy every time they play. And game elements, like trading and resource collection, keep players involved, even when it's not their turn. Of all the German-style board games I have in my collection, this is the one that sees the most daylight. *If you've heard about **#SettlersOfCatan** before and are curious about how the game is played, I go over all the rules in this video.*
Mark, I got the game last week and played our first game last night with the boys. We had a really good time and my 11 year old is hooked since he housed his brother and me. We are still novices but I can see us getting expansions this summer. Our local comic book/games shop has all manner of added terrains, cards, and full game expansions. Good stuff.
Thank you so much! the written instructions were kinda big and confusing, but thanks to your video me and my friends learned how to play the game in less than 10 minutes!!!
Very clear overview of the game. Thanks! I have some questions : 1). Do players hide their resource card type from other players ? 2). When a player rolls 7; does the player who rolled 7 also have to discard half of his resource cards ? 3). When somebody plays knight/soldier to move the robber; do players (including the player who played it if applicable) have to discard have of the cards similar to rolling a 7 ?
Thanks! 1) Yes. 2) Yes. Everyone discards down on a roll of 7. 3) No. Playing the knight/soldier does NOT require anyone to discard cards. The person who plays the knight/soldier can "optionally" steal one card from a single player who is affected by the placement of the robber.
Nice video. Thanks for making it and sharing with us. Which version of the game is it? I noticed that the ocean is in dark blue, not a light blue as I saw in other videos. I am wondering if it is a newer version. Thanks.
Two questions: 1. If I have the largest army/longest road card, and there is a tie between me and my opponent Who gets the card? 2. When I play the robber, can I ask the other players how many cards they have?
1. The largest army/longest road cards go to the person with the largest army/longest road. For someone to take that card from you they need to build a larger army or longer road. If they only tie you they don't get the card. They have to build an army or road at least one bigger to take the card. 2. No. You must choose a player to rob from based on what you know. Once you select a player that you want to steal a card from, they have to present all their cards to you so that you can blindly select one. But until you select the player they do not have to show you.
@@ירוןאפרים Understood. That's why you have to pay attention to who is collecting cards. If you select a player who doesn't have any cards you don't get to steal any.
@@MarkBarros Oh ok but it's kinda weird because the rules do say that you can ask the number of the cards on page 8 Here are the rules: www.catan.com/files/downloads/catan_5th_ed_rules_eng_150303.pdf
+RockSooks You are correct. I totally know this but for some reason I said it wrong. :( Added an annotation to correct this. Thanks for letting me know.
Traders and Barbarians (amzn.to/1Vq874i) has a bunch of game variations that you can try, one at a time or in combination with each other, that kick the core game up a notch. There are three in particular that I have used together that work really well together, but they elude me at the moment. When I remember which I will let you know here.
You can purchase as many development cards as you can afford on your turn. There is no limit to how many you can purchase or hold in your hand at one time, though you can only play one development card on the turn after you purchase it or any time thereafter (unless it is a victory point card... You can play those immediately).
Hello Mark. Thanks for this video. In my rule manual it's saying the robber makes players discard if they have 7 or more round down. I am not sure if this is just a update to the game or not. Are you sure it's 8? Thanks.
This is just superb, been searching for "create a trading platform" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Anokeen Trading Tetaniformula - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got cool results with it.

I’ve played the kid version with my grandkids and was looking for a video explaining the adult version. Yours is the best! Thanks for a great job!
Good job. Best explanation of game play that I have found!
Thanks +Gordon Aven!
There isn’t an yellow set of settlements cities and roads in catan
Thanks for uploading a high quality video about the rules!
Thank you sir. Very kind of you. Settler's of Catan is a great game. Glad you and your family are enjoying it. I appreciate your feedback.
Played yesterday bought it today Star Trek version. This version not only has space ships but also special ability cards. My most favorite board game.
I played Catan at a friend place two weeks ago and I live and breathe the game now. I thought Risk was the ultimate board game...what a fool, haha.
It's really a great game. Definitely a gateway drug into German-style board games. :)
So is "German Style" a buzzword for resource management? Like Ticket to Ride?
Kind of. You are on the right track (pun intended). Here's a good definition for you from Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German-style_board_game
Fantastic. Thankyou :)

Dude I had this some years back, never got around to finding someone to play it with. I have to look around if I still have it.
It's a pretty cool game. Dig that sucker up and find some -victims- friends to play with.
Hmmm....might pick it up for my kids.
They have a lot of expansions. I just play the plain vanilla version. Perhaps one day I will try to kick it up a notch. :)

Can a settlement open a port without a road pointing to the port.

Awesome Gustavo Rosenburg. Glad it helped. :)
Great video, clear and fast explanations! 10/10.
hey thanks for the video how do you place the settlements onto the board at the b beginning of the game? take turns or do it random? ir what?
+Caleb Yagow Take turns. Checkout my video on the Player Setup Sequence for the details: ua-cam.com/video/GpckqSOrkDg/v-deo.html

Thanks for the video. I'm going to play it for my friends before we play for the first time tonight.
Awesome! Glad you liked it. :)
This is more understandable than that other video I watched.
can u do a tutorial of connect 4 i am confused

It's an older version. The older versions were made a bit hardier.
Great information in this vid I completely understand now 😊👍

Because I want to steal from a player who has cards

Correction : Longest road is achieved when you build FIVE or more roads, not six. You say six but the card says five :D :D

Suggestions for one of the expansions that isn't too confusing for new players?

There is also Catan Junior

Very well done sir. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it.
Very well done! Thank you :)
Solid run down. Thanks a lot!
That Gryffindor shirt tho!!! :D
you need 5 streets to get the longest road and not 6
You didn't say anything about how to set up the first settlements.
You didn't read the video description I guess. ua-cam.com/video/GpckqSOrkDg/v-deo.html
