I can’t believe I just watched 23 minutes of a tutorial on how to play a game I do not have and have no intention of buying. That’s just how frickin’ good your videos are! Well-produced, well-spoken, edited well, and with easy-to-understand segments throughout. I love this channel!
I just watched an entire video teaching me how to play a game that I've played dozens of times and could easily explain without referencing the rulebook at all. That's how awesome Rodney is 😂
I've known how to play Catan since the late 1990's and yet I still watched this whole video anyway (and learned a couple of things I was doing slightly wrong). It's a testament to how good this channel is and how good Rodney is at teaching games.
We got Catan for our oldest son for Christmas and Catan Jr. for our youngest. It wasn’t long before the entire family, even our six year old, was hooked on Catan. I’m glad I discovered your channel. Now that we know our family loves board games, we’re actively seeking new ones to play. It’s such a great way to spend time as a family!
So glad you've been enjoying the hobby! We have a playlist on our front page that shares a few games that can be nice for people getting into the hobby - have fun exploring (and playing!).
I bought Catan yesterday and watched a video on how to play it 3-4 times but I couldn't understand anything. Today I thought of checking out this video and guess what, I understood everything. This game was too hard for me to understand but you did it. Hats off.
My 10 year old just dubbed this “the best game tutorial video ever made”. Well done. Very clear and answered every question I had as it was forming in my head.
3:42 : Wool ? Wait... you mean I've been calling those wool cards sheeps for 25 years and I was wrong the whole time ? This game is indeed deeper than I thought
Also many people call bricks “clay” due to earlier versions. I was surprised that Rodney did not address this. Probably because it is not official. Or that he didn’t mention it was once called Settlers of Catan. Calling it Catan seems weird as everyone used to call it “Setters”
I have Catan Junior about pirates and building castles and ships, and it's amazing how well they boiled the rules of this game down into that to make it simple for kids to learn!
You are so kind and helpful, thank you so much for annunciating so clearly. I just got this game for Christmas 2020, so perfect timing for this video! I can't even tell you how great a tutorial this is. You are patient, specific, and don't skip any details. Thank you so much!
My story. I am an avid magic the gathering player. One day in 2009 I was looking for something mtg related and came across bgg. That lead me to settlers of Catan. It is the first “designer” board game I bought. I now own over 100 board games. Most expensive google search ever. I introduced my brothers one friend to settlers and it blew his mind so much that he now has over 600 games. Crazy times.
similar story here, but early 2000s and I see some of the guys at "the shop" playing a game they called sheep. They taught it to me, and eventually bought it. We would play it all the time. lots of great times. Despite moving on, I still keep my copy because the guys may want to play it again some time.
Something similar happened to me. Once at lunch at work I saw a group of friends playing Tsuro, I asked if I could join and now I own around 20 different board games, and since we all play together really often we try to keep different board games from the rest, unless we really enjoy playing the game so much that we end with two copies in the group to play with family or similar.
I have played this so many times with some friends and they taught me the rules. I never bothered to read the rule book for myself, but we have been doing some things wrong. Sure glad you made this.
This was like a trip down memory lane! I watched the whole thing and it brought me back to those early days in the hobby when we played Catan every week! Those were such good times! Over 15 years in the hobby, Catan ➡️ Jaipur ➡️ Pandemic ➡️ Ticket to ride ➡️ Power Grid ➡️ 200 board games!
We are dusting this one off the shelf and this is very helpful. We also just got Etsy upgrades for it for Christmas advent presents. Thank you for these videos to jog the memory!!!
I'm probably the only board game hobbyist who hasn't played this game! But sometimes, if I'm stressed out, I find it soothing to listen to Rodney explain how to play a game!
This was so well explained! I have never played Catan, but recently asked to get it for my birthday, as I'm getting into board games. I feel equipped to start playing after watching your video!
Just watched this video and I bought catan to play with my family , I subscribed immediately and liked the video , I’ll be showing this video to my family because you described it so simply for me to understand . Thank you , much appreciated
Great find... Wife wants me to play this game, I knew it was complicated and hard to explain the nuances. This took the complication out of it and NOW, I am thinking of strategies. Thank you.
I had always been a board game nut since I was a kid. Stratego, Risk and Clue being my favorites. When I was 20 I first discovered Settlers of Catan at a cast party with some friends. Cut to 17 years later I own 180+ games and go to conventions every year. Catan is The Godfather and for a good reason: this game still slaps.
Within the last couple of years, me and the kids have gotten into board games such as ticket to ride, small world etc. Settlers of catan is one of our new games for this Christmas and your explanation of the rules is so clear so thank you. Should be able to crack on with this game tonight. Also watching your game play and descriptions of other games has helped me decide and understand different games. Keep up the good work 👍
Rodney, I can’t explain to you and this channel how much you have helped me learn, then explain to other people who come to my table how to play games. I have a very small collection of games. But I’m the guy who brings the cardboard to the table and gets people to play. My wife just got me Catan. I’ve never played it. So thanks again. PS - my wife doesn’t get my hobby.
I usually need to watch several videos on how to play a game before I feel confident I understand the rules. I feel confident after watching this once. Very well done!
Great tutorial. I just bought this game and was feeling overwhelmed after reading the instructions. You explained it beautifully. When my friends come over, I'm going to screen your video for them before we begin playing. Thanks so much 😀.
This has been a great intro. Every time I thought of possible exceptions or edge-cases for rules as you were detailing them, you actually introduced the situation and how to handle it. Thank you!
You are literally the best!!! I watch all your stuff!!! I been playing board games for years because of you like 10 years now and I skipped right over this game but you have made me want to play it now! Thank you!
I have just bought this game as friends have it. Watching this video has been so educational, the rule book itself Is easily understood, which is unusual but this video brings the game to life. Well done on such a great explanation. 😀😀😀
This is great. When my family plays, we have 1 modification. The harbors that have a picture of a resource allows a 2:1 trade of any two resource for on of the resource pictured. This drives people to try to get more harbors and strategy is different. We are excited about getting expansions this holiday season. Thank you for the tutorial videos, all of them. I have used them as a reference for so many family game nights and they are great for seeing what games we may want to purchase next.
My two sons and I and I want to start playing more strategy games after enjoying the Disney villainous. Ordered Catan, Risk and Carcassonne because of your videos. You break the games down so well that after watching your video once I feel I have a good enough grasp of the game to get started. Unlike other videos on here and confusing rule books. Great work 👍🏻
Catan is my Hulk Hogan of board games. I don't get the appeal but I can appreciate what it's done for the business. It has allowed for other talent that I enjoy much more to get a platform. Plus they both sport a lot of red and yellow and are really old. Congratz on 25 years Catanamaniacs.
Had heard about Catan but thought it was complicated. Unfortunately, no one in my family or my friends play this game or even heard of it. Your video has made it so simple to follow and play, I just ordered the game online. The bummer is, I need to wait for a couple of weeks to get the game from the US to India. Wow. My family plays games every single day and we often get new games fairly regularly. This game definitely seemed confusing however you explained it so well that I feel like I can play it without even referencing the rule book. GREAT explanation. Thank you.
How to play Catan? I am shocked this video didn’t already exist! I love it. I should watch since I always always lose. I can put my settlements on sixes and eights and then elevens get rolled all game. Hahaha.
Freakin' love Catan, but I needed to brush up playing again. I know, I know you would think right? So glad Rodney did the video, his vibe is so infectious.
I’ve been a pretty avid board gamer for about 3 years now. Never played Catan, but just got it and the 5-6 player expansion for my anniversary with my fiancé (9 years!). Very excited to bring it out next game night.
Always a delight to watch your excellent explanations! Its just so well structured and your energy is awesome. We had our first Catan games today and loved it. Thank you for being you 😊❤
What a great tutorial! Somehow Catan came up in my suggestion feed and after watching a few videos I couldn’t figure out what was going on but it look interesting. Thanks for explaining how to play and what all the pieces meant.
Thanks so much, I’m about to play this game with friends who play regularly and being a slow learner I was worried I’d be a burden and not pick it up quickly enough. I feel like I understand how the gameplay works now.
Nice video! Thanks, Rodney! I've been playing this game forever, so much so that I haven't read the rulebook in years! Funny story: when I first played Catan, I hated it. Turns out that the friend you taught me the game was so minded on winning that his attitude scared me away from this game. Couple years later, played Catan again with my wife and new friends who were more laid back. Loved it! Went to buy it the next morning. Catan has been a staple of my house's boardgaming habits for 13 years now. :)
The attitude of the people at the table makes SUCH a difference doesn't it? Many of my favorite games I know I wouldn't have enjoyed if I had played with a disagreeable group. So glad you found a more enjoyable group for Catan :)
I, also, have a hard time learning new games with just written instructions. I’ve had this game for years but never opened it, thinking too complicated for me, kids & grandkids. Now, I can’t wait to play !
Truly one of the best games ever. This game was an introduction to the hobby even though i played games like Clue and Monopoly, Nightmare, trivia pursuit, etc when i was a kid. This was the game that got me into collecting and playing board games. I still wanna see the blooper reel box flips tho. Ive tried the box flips just for shits and giggles its not easy.
Then I'm doubly grateful for it, because now that means we've been able to form our long-distance friendship because of the hobby and being in it together :)
If you could do a seafarers one much appreciated. did a really good job explaining the rules. I even learned something about when the resources run out. Thank you.
I can’t believe I just watched 23 minutes of a tutorial on how to play a game I do not have and have no intention of buying.

Hardly obscure :)

The resource is called wool, but it's perfectly okay to say, when trading, that you have wood for sheep...
Also many people call bricks “clay” due to earlier versions. I was surprised that Rodney did not address this. Probably because it is not official. Or that he didn’t mention it was once called Settlers of Catan. Calling it Catan seems weird as everyone used to call it “Setters”

SHEEP, WOOD, ROCK, WHEAT, BRICK. They just got all of them wrong :)
In a similar vein, the 'Wood' card should be called Lumber as it is by definition already harvested and ready to be used in construction.
Already played many dozens of times, including most expansions, but watching anyway lol. Love your explanations.
Hey, thanks for the interest in hearing my teach of it anyway :)

People like Rodney make America look good! The way he talks and executes the tutorial of Catan makes anybody want to play Catan!
I'm Canadian, but I'm not implying anything about America by saying so, just wanted to clarify.
Wow .I loved this video.I learned how to play catan which was lying in my home since 3 day!
So glad this helped!
This title really just help the spread of hobby gaming as we know it today!
The legend has reviewed the legendary game
Very pleased to be finally covering it!
Thanks Rodney for always being such a great board game teacher. Love your work!
Thank you so much for the kind words!
The game that brought us into the hobby! Forever grateful for it!
Then I'm doubly grateful for it, because now that means we've been able to form our long-distance friendship because of the hobby and being in it together :)
