- In week 10 of the 1970 NFL season, during a game at Riverfront Stadium between the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers, Bengals center Bob Johnson found a penny on the ground. And when he found this penny, the entire trajectory of the 1970 NFL season, and the 1970 Bengals, changed for the better. This is the story behind a lucky penny, and how a little bit of superstition went a long way

This is an amazing job of research on a story that 99.99999% of the population never heard of--This was an incredible job of story-telling. These types of stories are what make your channel so good. This 1970 story is true art...one penny :). Awesome
I have lived in Cincinnati for 52 years and didn’t know this story.
FYI copper coated pennies didn't start until 1982. All prior pennies were 90% copper except 1943 which was zinc coated steel.

After the Steelers game that season, the Bengals luck going forward wasn't because of a penny. It was the luck of the easy schedule. All the teams they played after the Steelers were Crap in 1970.

Miami Dolphins tight end Marv Fleming once caught a touchdown pass v. Buffalo Bills and found a $5.00 bill in the end zone.
One could even consider the penny to be the start of a Butterfly Effect, as the Bengals offensive coordinator that year, Bill Walsh, would eventually kickstart the 49ers dynasty with an offense he devised that year in Cincinnati with Virgil Carter.

Well CONSIDERING the FACT that the Cincinnati Bengals and SHITTSBURGH Steelers are WAY BELOW a 39.6 COMBINED and should be SPIKING the football into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play, AND the FACT that I wouldn't pay a PENNY to watch EITHER ONE of these teams this DOESN'T SURPRISE ME AT ALL!!!!
My superstition is this. After beating a mediocre Steelers team, they rolled four of the worst teams in the NFL at the time
Yeah that wasn't exactly a murderer's row they faced. The four teams combined for a whopping 12 wins between all of them that season.
When you're the worst in the league at 1-6, then ANY win streak against ANY schedule is an admirable accomplishment.
Bengals QB Virgil Carter played that years playoff game against the super bowl winning Colts, with broken ribs. Talk about toughness

What the Bengals did in 1970 was amazing, they lost their starting quarterback Greg Cook before the season and then had to rely on Virgil Carter, a Chicago Bear reject, and Sam Wyche, a Wheeling Ironmen quarterback from the Continental Football League, to take them to the playoffs in only their third season in the league.

I wonder how "lucky" that penny would have been if, after walloping the eventual 5-9 Steelers, the Bengals didn't get to play the 2-11-1 Saints, the 5-6-3 Chargers, the 3-10-1 Oilers and the 2-12 Patriots?
The 1970 turnaround was great, and Cincinnati _did_ start the season by defeating the eventual AFC West champs, Oakland (8-4-2), but their schedule was fairly weak. Not as lame as the '72 Dolphins or the '75 Vikings schedules, but still, not exactly Murderer's Row.
Lucky penny, phooey. Paul Brown entered the playoff game vs the Baltimore Colts with no illusions. He told his team "just don't embarrass yourselves." And so they lost 0-17 instead of, say, 0-37...
No expansion draft. No help for a new team. NOTHING. When Paul Brown started the Bengals, it was, "Good luck. See you in the fall. Better go hire some guys somewhere." To make it to the playoffs (and win a game) in their 3rd year is a heck of a thing. But then, Paul Brown. But still....
Interesting that Paul Brown apparently chose white uniforms over the typical dark home jerseys, just as he preferred as coach of the Browns.
...and he gave it to his playwright friend, who went back in time to stalk a beautiful actress and that very penny killed the friend somewhere else in time.

The steelers struggles at riverfront stadium began right here. Chuck noll went 7-14 in Cincinnati
Steelers were not yet the dynasty they would become. They had been 1-13 I believe before Noll took over in 1969.
@WaltGekko Even in their hay day, they still sucked in cincy. Literally, the Super Bowl winning steelers lost 34-10 at riverfront to the winless bengals, after turning the ball over 9 times

Imagine if Bradshaw didn't improve after his rookie year and continued to struggle, that too would change the Steelers history as well. Plus Bradshaw would probably ended up as a bust.
He was close to busting. Joe Gilliam might've been better, but he got beat up by the Raiders, ended up getting hooked on painkillers.

Gilliam had the fastest release of any QB I have ever seen. Even the camera frame rates could not keep up with the speed of his release. Much faster than either Marino's or Namath's.

He was a very solid RB for the Bengals in the early 70's. They had a pretty good backfield in those days. Johnson, Robinson and Boobie Clark, who won ROY in 1973, but then tailed off some, ala Don Woods. Paul Brown still preferred to pound the ball, especially as it took a few years to get their true Franchise QB in Kenny Anderson.
Trivia: Johnson ended up on the 1976 Bucs, as we has picked in the 1976 Expansion Draft. He played that one season with the Bucs and then retired.

That's also where the 0hi0 coast offense was born because blue chip Greg Cook was tragically injured and Virgil Carter did not have a strong arm and some dude named Walsh had to figure something out. To his credit Bob Trumpy [TE] was friends with Greg until the latter died. Also, DT Mike Reid was a virtuoso piano player, which must have driven his Mom nuts, "I payed $4 a month for those piano lessons and you better not hurt those hands, mister!"

o.k. can relate. When I was a kid, I would find 4 leaf clovers in a field of grass and clovers and put them in my pocket. VERY few times did I have good luck but one time playing some sandlot football.... I completed ALL my passes, threw a BUNCH of touchdowns and was awesome on defense..... which is BETTER than when you spike the ball into the ground on every single play..... ANYWAY, I like to hear the superstitious stuff professional sports guys talk about. The Redskins had a player who needed a new helmet, it was all scratched up and he would NOT let the Redskins replace it. And at the end of the season, a season in which they made the playoffs, he turned it in. When he got his new helmet, he didn't do as well. I don't remember the player and I'm a Dallas fan so I only knew about that because my Dad was in the USAF and stationed in the Washington DC area. I hear about baseball players not shaving, or wearing the same socks (ew) or wearing the same jersey and no one comes near him or his locker until they lose. Sometimes entire teams insist on wearing the same color jerseys (not the SAME jerseys but the same color) each game until they lose (home or away)...... it goes to show you, superstition is a BIG thing in sports just as much as it was part of Stevie Wonder's life at one point. I remember those Bengal teams back then they weren't that good but they were a tough out or a very tough team to beat if you will.
Rugged, physical lines (both sides) and pounding the rock was the basis of the O. After Greg Cook was hurt, they did not have a QB with a real arm, until they drafted Kenny Anderson in 1971.

I don't believe in "Luck" I would just chalk it up to coincidence or them just so happened to get on a roll when he found that penny.
The universe was playing butterfly effect through Bob Johnson. There was also a four-leaf clover on the sideline somewhere, and if he'd found that instead, Irish-American and Notre Dame Irish alum Terry Hanratty was destined to lead the Steelers' dynasty in the decade to come. Instead he found the lucky penny as shiny as Bradshaw's dome, and destiny was sealed. The universe works in mysterious ways.
I used to live in Bob Johnson's hometown. It's great that his number is retired. But it's also astonishing that Anthony Munoz's No. 78 has not been retired by the Bengals.
Mike Brown doesn't believe in it. He even let Dave Klingler wear Boomer Esiason's number, and let Andy Dalton wear Kenny Anderson's number. Both were sacrilege.

The good luck that penny provided would only last until they reached the playoffs as they lost their playoff game against the Baltimore Colts and didn’t score any points. Back then, winning the division didn’t guarantee you a home playoff game.
Still a great video. If Paul Brown was that good at winning games in which his team had the lead at halftime, then I think it’s fair to say he’s unintentionally influenced Sean McVay. Speaking of McVay, I’m now of the belief that the Bengals win the Super Bowl if someone has a penny. As it is, Mike Brown is considered a penny pincher by a majority of Bengals fans so there’s that going for them.
The Colts appeared in, SB V, where they did everything in their power to, lose, somehow, the Cowboys wanted it, somewhat, less.
Or maybe the fact that they played against a good team in Baltimore had something to do with it.

The only thing dumber, than, that, was, that they didn't switch to their current helmet until 1981, that year they went, to, the, first, of, their, three, SBs, coincidence, I think, not.
Another fun fact: The Browns' opponent in Week 13 was the Dallas Cowboys, who wore their "unlucky" blue unis. No such jinx, though, as the Pokes prevailed in a 6-2 mud bath at Municipal Stadium, killing the Browns' playoff bid, as both Ohio teams' records were 6-6 coming into the game.

Kind of sounds like the 2015 Chiefs, who went from starting 1-5 to winning out, making the playoffs, and ending one of the longest playoff losing streaks ever by blowing out the Texans on the road on Wild Card Weekend.

Lemar Parrish had 2 picks and a 30 yard kick return to set them up for a great drive, and gets overshadowed by a penny. It's like that episode of the Simpsons when Homer saves the space shuttle and gets overshadowed by an inanimate carbon rod.
Parrish was as good as any CB in the 70's. Multiple All-Pro and Pro Bowler with both the Bengals and Redskins. He was also lethal as a return man.

I guess it goes to show you that there's no price you can put on a lucky object turning things around! I keep forgetting that this was in the days before the Steelers were any good.
The thing about the Steelers, is, they, win, multiple, SBs, but, it's in a truly short window, and, a long drought follows, this one will be rough, worse, than, before.

In an alternate universe, Johnson doesn't find the penny, the Steelers win, Bradshaw gets a career-ending injury in the playoffs, and the Cowboys become the team of the 70s.
They'd still have, won, the, first, two, SBs, no matter, the, QB, as, Franco Harris, and, Lynn Swann, were, the true stars.

@@matthewdaley746 I think the Colts "survived" rather than "won." Imagine if Jim O'Brien missed his game-winning FG attempt, we would be "treated" to sudden death. (Or would we be "tortured"?) And I think the "F" stood for "fumble," with Baltimore losing four (the 4th one being Eddie Hinton's touchdown-turned-touchback, courtesy of Cornell Green), and Dallas losing one (Duane Thomas' fUmBlE on the Colts' 1, which is another story for another time).
