Kevin, with his vast knowledge and past experience with Audi's, picked up this 86 Quattro out of yard in Tennessee and thought with a few replacement parts, he could have it running in no time. It didn't go as planned. He rebuilt the CIS 3 times, replaced almost every part in the engine bay, scraped out a pile of rust from the gas tank and sunk a little more money than he hoped into it. But, with Kevin's determination, knowledge and help from co-workers, they got this five cylinder dream machine screaming again. Check out the ups and downs this Audi 5000 put Kevin through.
If you are aren't sure of what's going on, the boys at ECS Tuning bought 4 cheap euro cars and plan to build them into functioning, road worthy machines. Then put them through a series of challenges that will test not only the cars strength and endurance, but the drivers as well.

Kevin I really appreciate that it took you two times to learn your lesson
Love the sound of that Audi 5 cylinder...
Same
The best!
That's why I got one.
I had before 2.3 quattro audi 90 best sound blood is boiling
His love for shitbox Audis is astounding, there needs to be more Kevin’s in the world 😋
No doubt!
Oh, there are more of those Kevins! Best regards from Kevin in Norway (200 20V in the making) :D

@@mariom.9472 Very nice! Glad to see more people taking care of these old gems :)
I am a Kevin 87 & 88 5000cs Quattro’s also 89 200 avant
This is the best representation of owning any audi i've ever seen🤣 they're a pain to work on, the weirdest things break on them.. but it rewards you everytime it DOES run..
I feel you. I changed the oil cooler on my C4 yesterday because it was leaking. Technically an easy job because it’s just behind the oil filter, but the way it is mounted it’s just a pain to get it in and out. Love that car to death though.
As a european i love these audi's
I love how they look
I love how they sound
I love everything about them
For 1500$ I would buy this any day. Old cars like that made u mechanic. It makes u mad but it keeps u going. My father had one. Childhood memories were beside road but those are the fun memories. Learned everything I know about these old Audis.
In Germany you don't get one for that prize. Let alone one that drives and is quattro. Start at 8000 with a quattro not running and missing parts
heh, i bought mine for $250 CAD, and my parts car for $150 CAD, dont ask me how i managed that but i prevailed
bought mine for $1,500. needed a fuel pump, and the fuel dist. to be rebuilt once or three times to get it right. then one of the fuel lines sprung a leak..
I worked for an Audi dealership in the early 80's, my favorite thing to do was test drive the 5000 turbo when they delivered them to the lot. They were beautiful fast cars (for the times) never forgot the Audi new car smell.
"Making a scene at a gas station" The joy of driving a beater. LOL
Well, I've had a 4000S Quattro non turbo for 10 plus years and it hasn't failed me except for a water pump. Best daily driver and winter beater having done more thousands of miles across country in 15 states. Please don't say they are bad cars. I think you went about it the wrong way. That adjustment screw on the fuel distributor is very sensitive and I think this is the reason you changed your fuel distributor. Your friend got it right. They are great cars
It's a team effort!
best sounding beater ever! True you have to get everything caught up maintenance wise sop it has to be a love affair with them.
i was lucky enough to score a turnkey urS4 for my winter beater a couple years ago. Then a C4 A6 Avant last fall for this winter. The urS4 has since turned into my long term project with a respray, fully built engine, new interior, big brakes etc.
Nicely done.
good, not enough ur models on the road, should keep as many running for as long as possible
Know the trouble you are going thru Kevin! Got a NA 2.3inline 5 whit bosh cis, and its so unpridictable and hard to find faults.. but that sound, omg that sound.. it really pays dividence
In high school my friend had an Audi 5G Quattro. What a fun car
Had an 89 100 Quattro that was in really nice condition. Had so much fun in that car and drove it all over until an F250 changed lanes into me. Really makes me miss it.
Buddy had a 91 200 20v Turbo Quattro at the same time. Was immaculate and a blast to drive. Also met an untimely demise when a car port fell on it and crushed the roof.
Sounds like a dream, love the 5cylinder turbo
On the ke injection system you have the problem that the springs in the injectors weaken over time, which means they open early and longer than they are supposed to, wich means they run insanely rich, in Germany we change them every 100km km (64k miles)
All of the noises it makes, running, coughing, barely idling, are so familiar to me. Have one sitting in the garage, in complete disrepair. One day...
what’s wrong with yours mate?
Now Hans!
You and me both man. I'm jonesing for that sound tho
holly fking shits i can relate too this vid with my audi 200 tq avant
you should to a MSQ efi conversion, parts new honestly are about the same as fixing or buying what you need to get the old parts running again. and you don't need to do the whole ignition and stuff like that, just the fuel system.
Is this for the next “winter” lol
Only the golf truly qualifies as a winter beater in my optics. Low buck, couple days of work you could do in a parking lot, you won't care if it's stolen and crashed.
Really? How is this not a Winter Beater?
@@7eis audi is too, only the fucking intake system on the 5 cylinders can be a pain in the ass, but when you get everything right and don't start messing with it, it's somewhat reliable
damn, i forgot it's mid way past March already, lol. i think these episodes are a month or two months old. Also the previous winter beater season was uploaded way into the spring as well.
@@7eis I have a 2007 Audi A4 that’s been a winter beater for 5 years now paid $1200 for it . Timing belt snapped this winter tho sadly 😂 she might live again tho
Beautiful 5 cylinder noises ❤
The K-jet plunger falls down when the metering flap goes up, thereby allowing more fuel to pass. The frequency valve adjusts the control pressure by bleeding off the control pressure to the fuel return line. You really need to know what the control pressure is at the warm up regulator to even start tuning the fuel mixture
Having a urs4 with a long list of needs, I took the end of this video personally lol.
Nothing better than the sound of a 5 cyl!
that is the definitive cis experience right there. been there :) cool car tho!
Never had a problem with mine.
Had forgotten how sweet the 5 cyl sound is, 20:35 reminded me that. Unfortunately, these are all unobtanium level in Europe. Edited: reading some of the comments, a guy said these can be "somewhat" reliable. Had a 1986 100 2.2, eng. code KU (non turbo) for maybe 15 years, same K-Jetronic. At the end had the car parked for 3 years, then decided to sell - hooked up the battery and started from the second turn. No problems with fuel system EVER - except for installing a rebuilt fuel pump once, probably partly attributable to driving with low fuel constantly. Only problems were constantly leaking steering rack (even after rebuild) and non-behaving door latches. Sold to a gypsy for abt. 450 EUR who said he would be transporting potatoes with it on the field.
i have one 5000s from 88 and i love this car :)
Mine was the ‘82. I love it too!
my 28 year old URS4 has been super reliable!

This is the best car vlog content thing available out there. Please keep them coming. Love your work !
I remember a family member and a buddy had one of these back in the day. I remember riding in my buddies audi and it did every bit of what was on the dash, I think like 150 or 160 mph easy, the gauge just kept going. I just remember looking at the speedo wondering where it was gonna top out at. Family member I remember it driving really nice but the trans went out on it later on but the repair place probably botched it. Notorious for problems that and VW quantum same engine I think. Use what ever spark plug it came with check all the vacuum lines, and the coolant was some what temperamental but easy to bleed. Keep it I never see these anymore.
Been waiting for an update on this! I had very mild anxiety when I saw the fuel dizzy opened up :D. After owning these things for 20 years I never had to even dive that deep. In terms of the different fuel dizzy connections, I think the earlier turbo motors (KH) had the banjo fittings and later (MC1/MC2) had the ones like you have, but not 100% on the split. Either way, nice work! Excellent advice at the end. If you arent versed with CIS or have friends that arent, dont do it :). I love em and cant get enough!
The trick is finding one that hasn’t been abused. Like buy from older people, that has the car for a while.
What a beast! Needs some more of love, good wheels and coilovers and that's it. You know it.
My first car was a 5000, You guys are great , I enjoy this video very much!!! Keep it up!
When I put the 10vt in my 80q, I went EFI, because CIS is EVIL! Good to see you got this going though. Sounds amazing!
Sounds so good
Been waiting for this vid, I'm an audi fanboy, got a 94 urs4 my winter beater. Good car to get back n forth to work, ever once in awhile I get a thumbs up from a fellow enthusiast.
I dailyed my 5000 Turbo for 6years living in NY..🤙🤙🤙🤙🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
It's like an abusive relationship with an expornstar.
She's worn out, tired, she's got a lot of issues and needs constant maintenance.
But then once you start to give up on her she takes you to bed and starts screaming, and reminds you why you got her in the first place.
Love that 5 cylinder sound, thumbs up from here!
Not sure how it sounds yet, but i will get back to you guys!
lol 😂
Sounds like a beater volvo, proper 5 cylinder shitbox! =D
I have still 3 left of the oldones: Audi 200 2.2 20V TQ 1990 and Audi S4 C4 2.2 TQ 1994, Audi 100 C4 1991, 2.3 Automatic. I do love them!
got an URS6 and boy is the maintenance something else, but the driving is soo fun
amazing ! Don't give up on this machine ,! Put new fuel injector they like to leak
That 5 cylinder growl 🥰🥰
My 200 TQ avant has some fuel issues too, im gonna check all the system this Week end !
Thanks for the video ! And perfect sound with no exhaust 👌
Good luck!
if it aint a rusted out crap can, and you don't have the pressure of getting getting it done 'before the big show!', and by far the most important its not gonna be the DD, then this would be fun to resurrect and and live your '80's dream...and i say this as a foreign car hater. hope you keep it.
Man that thing sounds so good.
So is there going to be a part-3 of this series? This is AWESOME so far, and I love the work! Great job!
That wraps up Kevin's build! Next up are some challenges!
It looks like somebody replace the KE-Jetronic (CIS-E) with an old K-Jet (CIS) unit without the differential pressure regulator mounted to the fuel distributor (little gray box)
yeah he was talking about the injectors being a different thread and i'm pretty sure that means it had an NA version and also an older one than what that car needed!
The distributor was wrong too. The P/O was confused on several things which put Kevin behind the 8 ball. Thank goodness ECS has a good team. The guy working on the 07K turbo 944 is a living cheat code.
It sounds so good! what a machine
Great video. I'm currently back-flushing some CIS injectors haha.
God speed.
I have been waiting for this video, reminds me of the 90 cs quattro i once had.
Just purchased a 1987 Audi 5000 Turbo Quattro Wagon (with a manual trans.)...Trying to get it to run... OMG, i think i just became a Kevin
i had this cis problem so bad. the WUR was also messed up lol. 16v 1.8 was not happy. i eventually figured it out and the car was great
I grew up driving 3 of these 5 cylinder cars: 81, 86 and 92 I think similar to the car you are working on. Civilized. Fun project. As an adult we moved to Mercedes and Porsche SUV’s but my parents still have 2 Audi sedans. That turbo was a smooth sedan.
Luv this chasing and sorting of this turbo beast, I have this same car but in a 200 wagon 10vt Quattro
It has never really ran correctly consistently and I have a push button in the cockpit connected to the cold start valve so I can cold start it and to help get me going if and when it vapor locks🤣
I have put about 50k miles on and it’s never left me sitting for 2 awful long lol
It has been wrecked a few times but The car has benefited greatly from never being worked on by illegitimate hands,
It has been a love-hate kind of ownership but I do love it more than I hate it!!!
I’ve towed a trailer with it, flat towed several dead vw’s home and played in the snow with it every chance I get!!!
The car originally came from the pacific northwest and did have a lot of general maintenance done to it before I ended up with it
Have 1984 100 CS its true that you need to wrench on it a lot,but that five pot sound love it,and its a great weekend car.
I was very lucky with the 88 5000cs avant I bought. It was owned by a old lady who serviced it religiously. Has over 20k in maintenance records and drives perfectly.
The artsy b shots are terrific
Yay!!!
Diligence paid off!!
👍👍👍🙌
good to watch.. plasure tu listen. thank you.. and the audi.. god demit.. just heart
Ah, the sweet sound of an old school Audi 5cyl.
Music to the ears.
my parents had 2 of them. an 85 and a 87 they were pretty good looking cars
Ahh CIS my old Arch Nemesis.
Buy the Bosch fuel injection manual and study it until you understand the CIS system. Then go to Scott Mockery’s website and go step by step through his trouble shooting procedures. Once the car is dialed in, it’s as reliable as any other car and much more rewarding to drive
With KE-jetronic make sure the “spare” fuse 24 is present. It can act like limp home mode if missing.
Yes! Runs barely, black smoke show too.
I've been waiting ages for this video thanks
Timeless Sound!
Wow this music is crazy DOPE!!! Big congrats and trust me I know what I am sayin
I think you look for 20mA at the fuel mixture control unit on the fuel distributor for good mixture. Parents had a 5000 once upon a time.
Could you guys do a video on rebuilding a CIS system? I'm currently tasked with that and after doing a lot of research it sounds like a tedious and precise job and you guys do great videos so I think it would help a lot
Great Idea!
"Winter Beater 2" - and it's March. Guess it'll be a beater for next winter.
....way to stick it out. That's why people dump these cars unfortunately. Good job!
When you guys are done I need the 2 passenger doors for my 200 avant 20 valve had zero luck finding any body parts my doors are dented up I need those ASAP ASAP
With some cars it is hard to imagine they where brand new some day..
This makes me so happy that my mk2 has Digijet instead of CIS. Cool car none the less
As long as the CIS hasn't been messed with, it is a reliable system. It is very sensitive to vacuum leaks, and that is why people start messing it.
@@PatricioGarcia1973 with old cars, vacuum is always a problem so its kinda inevitable. Either way, the digijet is a far more elegant system
Lol..
'Making a scene at the friggin gas station!'
#embarrassed
If you want a winter beater just go for a b5 or a c5. The c3 is cool and got that 5-cylinder sound, but it’s definitively old and you’re not gonna get ones that are well taken care of for cheap.
I miss this series
The key words, the car is 35 years old, the fuel system is 35 years old! CIS is awesome when taken care of, the newer fuels demands the CIS fuel distributors be rebuilt, and new injectors installed, pumps filters O rings etc. The type 44 5000's/100/200 are getting hard to find now they have achieved classic/vintage status by now, be prepared to find them really beat down however headed for the yard 99% of the time, finding a better example is probably really hard at best impossible for a decent price, but worth it if your not having to constantly fixing broken stuff, with that in mind choose your Audi's wisely .... lol
Oh sweet Jesus!!
Y'all rebuilt the KE Jetronic?!!
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
16:46....🤢🤢🤢
Damn those damn things!!
It's not like they're hard to repair...it's just the process
(Sciroccos,GTIs,GLIs,Rabbits,Golf,Fox, Audis....did my share of those...)
Once you get into these 5ktq’s it’s hard to part ways, there’s just something about them. I had a pearl white one like this one sold it because I was tired of it breaking it down on me all the time not even a year later I bought another one because I missed the “feel” and the “sound” and the look of these cars. When they’re running good it’s nice there’s nothing like them especially with a 1.9 bar chip…. Nothing like it at all. My first 5k was driven to hell it had over 350,000 miles the one I have now has been sitting since 1995 with 80,000 miles… much better hasn’t given me any major issues love these cars seeing these on the road is like seeing a unicorn or some shit
Several years ago I owned 5000 turbo Avant and it was a real pleasure to drive but it was somewhat problematic and i eventually let it go. In retrospect I think I should have persevered and kept it. It was a beautiful highway vehicle. BTW. It had a slight boost and it was probably developing around 200 hp
i always wanted and audi, but i couldnt afford a newer one, and too many people had an early 2000s b5, so i came across not one but two of these cars, and only paying about $400 CAD for both, what a steal i got
You need to get basic guide for ke-jetronic operation. Don't touch the mass flow sensor (toilet bowl), don't touch the distributor, they never fail, dont touch the pivot. Replace all the vacuum hoses. ECU adjusts fuel pressure according to lambda. Repair the auxiliary air valve on top of the cam cover.
Yeah, if you're buying an older Audi probably the V6 non-turbo model is a decent choice.
Great content
I'm damn stick of seeing videos of Corvette, Mustang and Camaro. I bought a 2004 Golf from a police impound for $800. The engine was locked up, the heater core was bad and the inside was mildewed really bad. I paid a shop $4,000 to install a used engine and fix the heater core. I paid another shop $4,100 to fix the sunroof and install a new interior. I replace the rotors and pads and replace a lot of suspension parts.
This thing is a total pile of garbage and I love it!
Got a 1987 Audi 90 with a 5cyl/10 valve. It has a bunch of rust, runs poorly, but I just can't let it die making a sound like that
Stick with the 3B engine (if you can find it) and/or start with the later AAN 5-cylinders. That'll bring you into the 21st century, or close enough.
I have to do this on my 5000S. I want to go full efi but it's a bit pricey with some custom stuff that'll take too long.
I dread the fuel distributor rebuild. Did you replace the injector seals?
Update:
Finished the fuel distributor in a couple hours and replaced the seals on the injectors after I put then in a vice and broke the old hard seals off lol. Took an hour or so. Not too bad. Now I gotta take it to my sisters garage and do the brake lines, rotors, pads, time it, new headlight assembly, clean the gas tank, exhaust work.. and that will do it for now :P
More Modern Cars. No thanks! I love such old cars. Here in germany we love too drive an rebuild those tresures ♡ we dont care about coasts or Time.
Is the “bomb” bad?
Here's an Idea just replace the whole old injection system, it's a pain in the ass to service and get it to run. I know there are electronic injection kits for those motors available. People just hate working on those old jetronic fuel systems
I disagree...buy old audis!! Great In The snow, comfy and always blazing hot heat. You learn how to work on it as you go haha
Does it has a fuel check valve, frequency valve, and fuel accumulator? I know my e21 with the CIS has 2 pumps, plus an accumulator to keep pressure at the Fuel Distributor
The amount of components that one of these CIS cars have and have to have to work correctly is kind of mind-boggling!!
@@oliverjantz1108 yeah, but almost all the ancillaries are mechanical, so they last a very long time. The main problem with the CIS are vacuum leaks, which cause the system to go lean or rich, and people adjusting the mixture screw atop the FD...
2:31 enter 80’s doom music
Jokes on you, I already have one, HAHAHA
It’s been a week since you have posted it. Just like I said this mechanical fuel injection is pain in the ass.
Still recommend to put efi instead
If you want something similar in looks but with more power, a 5 cylinder turbo, and vastly better reliability go with the Audi 200 20v quattro.
Next winter, buy a Volvo 850. Much easier to work on and still that nice 5 cylinder sound.
I still think those can be really realiable. It seems you just picked one with to many problems :(
