Audi 5-Cylinder: The Best Audi Engine

  • You can argue, but there really isn't a more Audi engine than a straight 5-cylinder from 1970's. The Ingolstadt brand grew up with this engine - it was widely used in a handful of cars and they even raced it in a number of racing machines, let alone the most popular of them all: the Audi Sport Quattro S1. Yes, times when Audi worked on five-cylinder on daily basis were great...

Oil pump shatters over 7500, spark scatter starts at 6800, radiator was too small and subsequently had many many cooling issues. Diesels would burn out rings on no1 cyl every 80k. And everybody just loved cis and cis-e. K24 was too small and k26 from 944 was lagtastic. Hx35 was just right but came later(and not on audi). Rod bolts were a soft spot as well. But the parts bin nature of the engine made it legendary.

VAG built this engine because the EA827 engine [the typical VW/Audi 1.5 to 2.0 liter inline four cylinder] CANNOT be brought past about 2.1 liters. The engine was designed to be very compact, an entirely new crankcase would have to be designed for more displacement. In the 1970's, they came up with the solution of adding another cylinder to this four cylinder to create the "Audi" 5 cylinder. This was advantageous because the five cylinder could be built with the same tooling as the four cylinder.
They went on to take two of the EA827's and created the Audi V8. Then they sawed two of the center cylinders out to create the 90 degree Audi V6. Then, they dusted off old plans and built a V10 engine out of two of the inline 5's. This V10 was proposed for the Porsche 928 but never built, but did wind up as the engine in the Lamborghini Gallardo, among others. All these engines have 88 mm bore spacing.

Wall of text warning regarding Ferdinand Piëchs role in the 5-cylinder development:
Piëch had a weird obsession with oddball engines and especially those related to the number 5.
In the early 1970's he was involved with the development of a new economic engine generation at Mercedes-Benz for the W115. He convinced the other technicians that rather than going for 4 cylinder applications with different bore and stroke it would make more sense to just increase the number of cylinders. Therefore they were focusing development on creating an engine family which was available as 4 and also as a 5 cylinder version.
The engines were originally supposed to be petrol ones. After they started testing it quickly became apparent that the 5 cylinder started shaking badly at around 5000rpm. Development was set on hold. Piëch then just came up with the idea of using the engine design as a diesel since they wouldn't really rev past 5000rpm anyways and thus the OM616 and OM617 were born.
In 1972 Piëch joined Audi as head of dept. for special tasks in technical development. Since they were badly in need of a prestigeous engine they were looking for a way to develop a 6 cylinder unit. Since Audi's unfortunately had a layout which featured the engine to be in front of the front axle, an inline 6 application would have been to front heavy. Piech instead came up with the idea of a 5 cylinder engine again to combine "the economical fuel usage of a 4 cylinder with the smoothness of an inline 6". Thus from the EA827 4 cylinder the EA828 5 cylinder was born.
But still the urge for a 6 cylinder engine for VAG cars was big so that there were multiple efforts made, resulting in the VR6, the 12V Audi V6 and a 24V Audi inline 6 (!) which was co-developed by Porsche. Piëch was involved in the development of every single one of them.
Since the Problem with the FF layout on Audi's persisted the 24V inline 6 design was then sold to Volvo who used it in the 960. From this engine design later the Volvo 5 cylinders (e.g. used in T5) were derived. Those engines were then licensed by Ford and used in the Focus RS.
Piëch in the mean time initiated development of the VR5 and the 5 valve layout on the Audi 1.8(t) and Audi V6 engines.
TL; DR: Piëch kind of gave birth to most 5 cylinder engines used in passenger cars until the mid 2000's (except Fiat and Honda ones) and applied a 5 valve layout to an engine which would not have needed it. If that is not an unhealthy obsession with the number 5 I don't know what else is.
Oh, speaking of oddballs: He also initiated development of the W8 Passat, the W12 used in Bentleys, Pheatons etc. and the W16.4 Veyron of course.

    • @tomlobos2871
      @tomlobos2871 2 роки тому +3

this is not entirely correct. the modular engine series is a genuine volvo powerplant.
it was designed in house as part of the long running "project galaxy" started in the late 1970ies, shifting philosophy to fwd transverse layout. they insisted on designing as many components as possible on their own. since the PRV V6 did not satisfy, this included the engines and transmissions. galaxy almost left volvo bankrupt because of that and has been the largest financial investment in swedish industry so far at that time.
first prototypes were 4cyl, already all aluminium design but close to the redblock engine featuring sohc in first stages. it went to porsche engine development for refinements on the first produced 6cyl version. they had some disagreements so volvo decided to finish it on their own. porsche had hands on 5cyl turbo models for the 850 later. like they did on renault engines being used in the 400 series, filling the gap cause the 4cyl was delayed in favour of the new 6cyl that was urged to be released in the 900 models. the 5cyl showed up a year later, the 4cyl went into the S/V40 models only.
audi supplied the 5cyl TDI until 2001. those had eventually been phased out by diesel versions of the modular engine shifting to common rail injection.

The world needs a lot more straight-5 engines. Straight-4 are so boring and ubiquitous.
I'd love an RS3. But as with anything cool and interesting, they also cost a lot.

    • @xIcarus227
      @xIcarus227 2 роки тому +2

Honestly, as someone who's considering buying a used RS3 right now.. The RS3's problem is that it's at least a somewhat compromised vehicle considering its price.
For a similar price you can get a C43, which sacrifices just a bit of performance for way more options (electric/memory/ventilated seats, HUD, electric tailgate), and is bigger too (though size means nothing to me). Plus, it's got a rear-biased permanent AWD system which simply makes the car more fun.
I've always sworn that the day I will afford an RS3 I will buy one. But now being in that position, I see lots of potential cars which surpass it when you draw the line.
Just my 2c as a potential buyer. I might end up buying one anyway, but the price is definitely a bit too much.

@@xIcarus227 No you're making sense. I get where you're coming from.
I'm middle aged now and all my life I've owned compact FWD cars for the efficiency and low cost of ownership, getting the job done. All have been stick shift to keep me interested.
But I'm really looking hard at getting into a RWD platform with some actual horsepower. Stuff like the new GR86, a used M240i, maybe go the Mustang route, maybe a last-gen Golf R, maybe stretch for a Genesis G70 3.3T. I swore out automatics before, but lately since they've gotten so much better with tight snappy shifting and better behavior logic, stuff like the Genesis or a ZF or DSG are actually prettty awesome gearboxes and pretty durable too.

In my decades of 5 cylinder (and a recognition of slight bias) ownership, the Audi 5's (and VW 2.5) are reliable, have good gas mileage, great power delivery, and awesome potential. I've owned many. My highest mileage 5 is in my (now my friends as I sold it) 1991 200 20v turbo quattro avant. It has over 362,000 miles and has never had the engine cracked open. It has been modified over the years and at one point (2009-2011 ran 12.1 in the 1/4 mile with simple bolt ons. Still runs around town to this very day. Oh yes....they sound awesome as well.

Thank God VAG still make the 5 cylinder unit alive, it's the only (if not the homemade) gasoline powered inline five engine still produced now, if they stopped the production too like what Volvo, Fiat, and Honda did, the only way to hear the 5 cylinder sound is to make a Scania 5 cylinder diesel unit used by several buses rev to 6000 RPM.
NB. The transversely mounted inline 5 makes a car safer since it has more horizontal protective structure than inline 4 and V6 engine, that's why Volvo used to make a transverse inline 6 instead of V6.

hence handling, first audis had the engine in front of the front axle. wich eventually made the quattro necessary for sporty driving. had the chance to try a friends audi 90 coupe with the 2l engine and it was no fun at all cause of oversteering. got myself a volvo S70 at that time and that was totally different in handling since this is a safety issue and volvo is great on that topic. my current ride is an S80, 2.5 turbo, no regrets on that decision as it has an astonishing economy. though the V8 had tickled my fancy quite a lot.

The interior has been a generation ahead of the rest, and the exterior design too really, of the common cars that is. The lines are just very pleasing. It's "sporty". And I like to do sports and be active, in many of ways, so it's the car that personifies myself. It must be practical, so obviously Avant. Always ready to throw anything in or on top and go. I like to drive, so must be manual. And we have a good amount of snow, so quattro is nice, though not really needed, it's just fun. Not obsessive about it, it's just a car. But it fits me. As simple as that.

Big fan of 5 cylinders, had fiat coupe 20vt, volvo 850R manual, Audi S2 avant , Alfa Romeo 156 2.4 Jtd, and I'm driving my tweaked Vw T5 5 banger 👍👌😎

I have a 5 cylinder diesel vw t4 and a petrol 850 T5. I would chose a 5 cylinder over a 4 or 3 or 6 anyday. As a daily it's the perfect compromise between soundtrack ,performance and fuel mileage. Let alone all 5 cylinders until now have prouved to be very reliable units. Due to the complexity of the engine, the engineering was of a higher standard.
5 bangers rule let them live on.

In 1992 VW SA squeezed the 5 Banger Audi engine on The T3 Microbus and Caravelle and increased the engine capacity from 2.2 to 2.5 with Bosch K jetronic and later to 2.6 cc with Bosch not certain whether it was Digifiant . They discontinued the production in early 2000s those T3s are still considered gold to this day in South Africa

The USA had a T4 variant called the Eurovan, and it also got a 2.5L I5 initially. It was Digifant.

my first car was an audi 90 like 14 years ago, today I have a volvo s60 with a t5 engine, both engines 2,3 and the sound is still just as amazing as it was 14 years ago :)

I’ve got a 2.5L turbo Volvo engine in my Ford and it’s one of the best engines I’ve driven. The 2.5 gives a nice amount of torque and the turbo is nicely matched as to have great response, 15psi and pretty much no lag.
