First thing to do on K-jet cars is check the control pressure at the warm up regulator. Then, just the operation of the metering flap. When you tried to accelerate, it was starving for fuel.
I love watching these challenges and i love the old Audis. i have a 1986 Audi 5000cs quattro wagon that i've been working on for almost a year now that i've never seen run. watching you guys has honestly been a huge help with figuring things out and i finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. also if anyone knows where another one of these wagons is just sitting in a field somewhere please let me know. i desperately want another against my better judgement
I'm buying one Sunday, not sure where you're located but I'm in Michigan and I'd sell it to you if you're really passionate about these. I'm picking up 2 at the same time so getting rid of one wouldn't hurt me at all.
The noises this makes. I have spent many hours with these cars. All of it brings back memories. You should check to see if the spray patterns of the injectors are any good. That's a common cause of misfiring in these engines. Get the injectors out and place them in a bucket, run the fuel pump and lift the metering disc. Should be a fine mist.
I just love this series of winter beater ;D I just have my own audi 5000 avant in Germany and i find it so satisfying to watch you work on it and really good explaining how everything works and why it wasnt running.
Just a small idea: contact with k-jet killers about electronic fuel injection system for your car. If this car stood for quite a long time, you might have a problem with mechanical fuel injection. DON’T TRY TO DO SOMETHING WITH IT because one mistake can cost you no fuel at all
Looks like it is MC1 engine, personaly I haven't faced with it yet, but I reassembled KE-III Jetronic at my 2.3 AAR/NF, and it is not too hard to do by yourself if you have instructions and information about it.. After I did it, It is working fine without any problems with a nice performance for a year already, even after long time stood.. BUT YEAH, it will be much better to make electronic injector, especially on turbo engine..
Stoked to see this! Good detective work on the dizzy. I had to order those silly injector holders from Europe, so nice finding them somewhat local. The 10vt Audi's are so fun and unique. Glad to see you sticking with one again.
I've got Audi A6 C4 2.6 as my first car. And once I drove with my friend and my dad and my dad was on the back seat.He sat on the battery and iron rod in seat connected to both contacts and seat started to make a lot of smoke :D That was strange) rubber carpet on battery fixed this problem for entire time I had this car)
All C4 owners need to put the battery post cover on. They had a cover when new, but have been misplaced since. I use a small piece of rubber as well as the battery post cover that came with the car. C4 is best car.
This series has much potential, you guys crack me up. It looks just like my garage with a bunch of guys working on some old German car. Very much looking forward to the x5 video since I have my own 2001 x5 3.0i that I use as a winter beater. Nice job on that car and yeah replace the turbo.
Those have a special place in my heart. Almost got this as a first car, a 5000 CS Quattro and I thought it was a landyacht but a cool 5 speed awd one. Got a 92 Jetta instead
I have an 87 S NA that's not only white same as yours but as literally 90% of the same issues lol. I'm looking to park it and completely rebuild the engine and go efi eventually. They're such awesome cars when they run :)
I'm both happy and sad seeing this. I owned 2 5000Ts and 1 5000TQ and one 200TQ 20v. None of them were in this kind of shape, well, one had a badly sagging headliner. I do not miss the hydraulics. I've replaced pumps and steering racks, oh, and had a pressure hose re-built locally, still have a can of Pentosin sitting around!
Dude if you were to completely rebuild that motor or just throw a 1.8t in it and give it a little love ... okay a lot of love let’s be honest but still she’s a GEM!
That UPS truck at the end was full of all the parts this thing needs.... that were not in the trunk. Kevin, you're a good man, with a bad car choice. Prove us wrong.
it's like the car gets happier and happier because it knows it's going to be saved and driven again haha... but regardless her previously ignored health is showing...
Yeesh. I just bought a 92 accord coupe (ex so disk brakes all around) for 400 bucks. Threw a battery in it and drove it to a gas station. Smokes at high rpm (valve seals) no thermostat and the sunroof leaked where it sat for three years but other than that runs really good
Ultrasonic cleaner filled with 1:1 lemon juice concentrate and hot water will save you a fortune in solvents. A trick I learned working on old 80's motorcycle carbs.
I can't speak for everyone of course, but I just gained new respect for ECS tuning. They have a horrible reputation, but this is one of the reasons I'll always consider them in my parts purchases. I've probably spent $15k at ECS and I hope I contributed to this wonderful, but neglected Audi, getting new life.
I think this should be the “rowdy audi” when’s it’s running good and healthy just do a straight pipe with a small resonator... Audi’s always sounds good 🤘🏼
Waaaaayyy back...right before the end of last century... People would bring their Audi 5000's to the dealer for maintenance or repairs. The local dealers WOULDN'T TOUCH 'EM.....then the people would bring them to the small VW shops....WE WOULDN'T TOUCH 'EM EITHER!! Who lets a car like this trashed. I assume that a qauttro C3 isnt valued as high in the states as it is in europe. Here a rust free quattro body costs double of what this guy paid for the car. The mechanical fuel injection is going to be a pain, i assure you, unfortunatly there are very few options. As far as i know the easiest way to deal with it is to convert to a EFI system from a VW T4 van that had the 2.5 gasoline inline engine very similiar to this. Best of luck.
IMHO you'd be better off just ditching the K-jet and converting to EFI with a cheap old ECU like a megasquirt 1 V3.0 with just simple MAP-n fueling. It's much more flexible than a K-jet. The swapped components will outlive the car and can be sold or kept for another older 5-cylinder audi.
Under the hood is identical to my first car. 1987 Volkswagen 🦊 fox. Known in some markets as an Audi fox. 1.8 soho 8v 81hp CIS injection too...no turbo. My battery was under the windshield in the firewall. That car was the biggest piece of shit ever. So much so I had t trade up to a 1990 model lolol.
personally i prefer a midengine porsche(not rear) i think i know how this car was worked on to fix its issues seeing all those spare parts in it... this thing just needs fresh gaskets and a LITTLE rebuild servicing love though... lol south car is a luxury for us northeasterners though eh?
It's funny how intimidated people get by CIS. If you've worked on one CIS car, you've worked on them all... its really NOT complex at all. I've owned probably 6 or so CIS cars and never had any issues with diag on them. As long as the fuel dizzy isnt full of crap, the airflow plate moves, generally they run.
No they cant, at least not without some fancy high temperature materials. I tried the same for my audi 100, but when switching the engine off, the temperature at the injectors rises above 150°C. Because the intake sits directly above the exhaust. And its made from aluminium so the heat gets to the injectors very fast...
Perception is reality, unfortunately. Once the general public perceives something to be of lesser value, a small group of enthusiasts can't undo that. There have been some C4's gaining value (S cars), but otherwise there's still a lot of ignorance surrounding older German cars, and even more ignorance about older Audis. The TV show 60 Minutes is responsible for a lot of that ignorance. In the entire time I've owned my Audi A6 C4 (13.5 years), I've spent maybe $1k on repairs that weren't regular maintenance, such as CV boots, control arms, window regulator, trunk struts, wiper arms, headlight switch, and ignition switch. But my much newer Toyota with less miles has needed thousands more in repairs.
@@mediocreman2 Thats why the older Audis has more value in germany. Because the reputation isn't dameged over her. Plus cars in this state woudent be lowed to drive on the street in germany.
What other upgrades should Kevin do?
All of them
LED Lightbar on the roof and Straight pipe 😂
New oldschool rallye wheels or fiffteen52 would look awesome I think.

Can't beat a turbocharged inline 5, even when running like this poor Audi! Great work guys
First thing to do on K-jet cars is check the control pressure at the warm up regulator. Then, just the operation of the metering flap. When you tried to accelerate, it was starving for fuel.
