EVERYONE in that school is to blame for Nishimiya's bullying, Kawai included. At least, Ueno admits not liking her. The other kids, even the teacher, knew what was going on but did nothing to stop it. It kinda pisses me off that Shoya is the only one to get all the blame.
Almost no one notices the little ways Kawai is to blame too. Her "weapon" is that she hides behind being nice and emotional and "trying to help" so it masks her micro aggression.
@@besupaaaIn the end I hated more Kawai than Ueno. Ueno at least says her point, WHY she was "mad" at her (not trying to communicate) and when sees that she's trying to change, she tries to learn sign language too. The fact Kawai started to scream out loud about the suicide attempt on the park made me so fucking angry... Usually you don't really want people to know those things, less if SOMEONE ELSE IS TELLING THEM. I had anger issues with other things, and bro, i'm too ashamed of it, because I know I hurt a lot of people emotionally (the only pyshical damage was to myself, a broken knuckle and some scars in the hands), I don't like people talking about that, I won't deny it, but... I don't like it. And I can speak more freely about the self harm than the harm to others, Shoko almost makes Ishida die, so it's not just her guilt for the people worried for her, is a double slap. Even worse, Kawai just says "If I don't say it loud she won't be able to hear me".....
I think this is the best depiction of social anxiety and dissociation I've ever seen in any media and personally the most accurate. The X over the faces, how they feel distant and separated even if they're talking to you. Just beautiful
I seen this movie years ago and I still relate to the male protagonist. I used to be a bully as a child, then I became bullied growing up. And for years, I couldn't look people in the eyes either. No matter how hard I tried, I would always look down because it wasn't just easy, because I lacked self-esteem, I didn't feel worthy of connection and acceptance. I didn't want them to see my eyes and see the real me that I viewed as detestable. Just recently, I'm getting better, more comfortable at looking people in the eyes and projecting my words instead of being quiet, soft-spoken. This movie this gets feeling that vulnerability in a good way.
Try reading the manga Asper Kanojo. It'll resonate with your experience as a bullied kid. And one character, that comes at the end of the manga, that character will resonate even more strongly with you than the main character. Won't spoil why.
as someone with depression who experiences dissociation this movie is a hard hitter for me and will always mean a lot. humans have the capacity for empathy and forgiveness and rarely often expend it to those who make mistakes(no matter the size small or harsh). the feeling of not being worthy to even be alive is a feeling so unfortunately common. the inability to even be able to see people's faces or hear their voice hits hard for me too and it really does take work and time to be able to do it
I don't know if someone pointed out, but the animators really rock the subtlety here (3:20) when Kawai purposely opened her mouth as to pretend to sing, knowing that Nishimiya was following in her lead and then acting like she did nothing wrong just show she changed NOTHING while growing up, always puting a facade as good girl and ometimes people like never take responsabilities of their actions as long theres people believing in them
YES! i love that they took the subtle route because thats honestly the most common bullying i've seen, at least among girls. they'll say or do something to make you look bad, and they'll make sure they come off as a saint
Something very important to know is that in Japan children are taught from a very young age to not be a burden on others and to assimilate rather than stand out. It's a completely different mindset and that's one of the reasons why the rest of the children feel that Shoko is the one should be trying to incorporate herself into the class, not the other way around. Even the teacher doesn't try to accommodate her by changing his program to help her. While this doesn't excuse the bullying and the lack of involvement from the teacher, it explains how it can and probably does happen quite a lot in Japan.
But if anything, that actually makes it worse. Because of that's true (and I know it is, I study Japanese culture alot), then bullying her simply because she's deaf and CANNOT do some things, actually goes against the entire philosophy that is being taught. Yall know that she can't learn to hear normally, so help her learn to assimilate the best way she can, so she can belong like yall do. Help her to follow the philosophy as well. That's like being mad at a paraplegic for not being able to walk with everyone, as if he can control it. She's DOING the best she can. Why can't yall do the same?? It's crazy.....
This film is such a wonderful lesson in empathy. We can all be better at trying to re-frame ourselves to others' perspectives. (Not only Nishimiya, but also Ishida) I also love the fact that we initially despised Ishida, but later was rooting for him to push beyond his past and grow. I'm also sure it's mentioned in the comments, but I thought the intended quote at the bridge was, "I want you to help me live". I found that and her signed response of "I promise" so beautiful.
25:30 if youre confused there... so in japanese theres 2 words sounds similar. Tsuki means moon but Suki means love so Shoko said Tsuki on accident, mostly deaf people can't pronouce perfectly its very hard to learn how to train our vocal chord and to pronouce properly... And she decided to wear ponytail that's because she wanted to embrace her own dissability. I'm deaf myself using Cochlear Implant i always hide my disability with my hair down to ears so i can hide my Cochlear implant. so its big step for her using ponytail!
I saw the ponytail change in two ways. The first was how you mentioned, but the second was that she was also trying to change. Maybe change her perception of herself or how Ishida and others saw her. She spent the day with a ponytail attempting to communicate mostly verbally, but was really disheartened when Ishida couldn't understand her and thought she sounded weird. She also mentions later in the film that she 'tried to change but couldn't' and I believe its in reference to that scene. I could just be reading way too much into it though. 😅
Kawai makes my blood boil a bit, I get why others probably don't react the same but I was bullied all throughout school by a bunch of girls just like her. She wasn't just a bystander, she participated but only so much as to not get clocked, insidious tiny things, just enough so she could still feel good about herself and act indignant
I totally understand and relate, which is part of the reason I just wished She specifically got called out more than she does. But hey, can't win them all. Great movie nonetheless!
Thank you bro, fxcking spot on LOL then she flat out lied, talking about she tried to tell Shoko to stop it but he wouldn't listen, bxtch no you did not 🤦🏾♂️ because if you DID do that, he probably WOULD have listened. They were children. They were only doing that because they were ignorant and thought it was funny, like normal children would, not realizing the harm in their actions. If they had heard a kid saying "hey, this isn't cool", they actually probably would have listened. Alot of people like to say that not doing anything isn't the same as being the aggressor. This is not true for only one reason: Entertainment can only be valued by who engages with it. If a kid does a wacky thing and no one laughs, they're not going to do it again, because clearly it isn't something worth doing. The only reason he thinks it's funny is because YOU'RE LAUGHING, fxcking idiot 😒 that's what we learn as we get older, that's why we don't DO things like that anymore after we grow up. She clearly never matured. None of them did except, ironically, Shoya himself, which is why he os the one Shoko likes when she gets older, because he actually evolved past his kid phase 💯
the manga of A Silent Voice has a few more extra things like showing more of the other characters and their own struggles they face like Nagatsuka, Sahara, Kawai, and little bit of Mashiba too the faris wheel scene always pisses me off with how realistic it is but at least Ueno is acknowledging that she messed up and showing that she's trying to learn sign language shows that she's changing still the teacher is the one who really did the most damage with the detail that he was laughing at Nishimiya in on small scene because yes everyone had a part in this but still he did nothing to help the situation and had Ishida be the scapegoat
I was bullied too, so many times that i just got used to it and be quiet, cuz wth am i supposed to do? the teacher's and classmates i had were just like these ones, they just watch. Like Ishida i always look at the ground whenever i come across people. i distract myself away from the people because i overthink a lot and always focus on how they view me, i always think of the negative thoughts. So i can relate a lot between Ishida and nishimiya's side.
T_T when the crosses fall always gets me. Yeah he was a utter shit as a kid but that sort of anxiety and loneliness sucks hard and he definitely earned being free from it. Though its kind of rough that he's the reason she lost all hearing in one ear :(
What gets me emotional in this movie is that I can see how Shoko is "nice and gentle and soooo comprehensive" because she probably feels like a burden to everybody. People dont need much to hate you, so Imagine if you were not the best girl ever? God forbid you have any type of "bad" behavior. So yeah you have to be nice and gentle and lovable because you'd feel guilty otherwise.
This is a movie about a boy learning to love himself again. “Am I allowed to have this much fun?”, is heartbreaking. There’s so many great lines in this movie
This was a milder form of bullying, so it looked repairable. Try reading Asper Kanojo. When bullying becomes more extreme (and there is not clear dividing line, depends on individuals involved), things become completely broken. Irreparable. For life. Asper Kanojo depicts this properly.
Genuinely one of the most human movies I've ever seen. We can't always just villanize the bully and reduce him to just a bad person. They're a person too. The way life works is hard to believe sometimes.
This film was a bit hard to watch - even though I did not go through any of those things, the movie is so good that I can't help but empathize with the characters.
This movie hits you in your ancestors soul haha That's how potent it is! I read the manga, and this movie does it justice, it's one of the best ever made. That scene, where a tiny Shoko wants to KHS, is too heartbreaking. No child shouls sign that ever...
This movie is definitely worth a rewatch in englishs the def actors who plays Shoko for both versions are excellent and the over all quality of the dub is Ghibli dub levels of acting. Definitely worth the experience if you get the chance.
Funfact: kawaii was TRENDING hastag in japan on how hated she is as a character ugh i can't stan kawaii.. she always try to be loud to be the center of attention before acting all good and innocent, she mouthed the singing early INTENTIONALLY so shoko can follow her and then act all nice and asked shoko to follow her lead 😒, even at the end when she try to "comfort" shoko, she yelled first so everyone can look at her and then actually start hugging shoko so she can appear "nice" everything she did was based on her narcissism just so she can feel good about herself on how "good" of a person she is.. 😒😒 the worst type of bully.. ueno on the other hand? Not saying what she did was okay AT ALL she was a bitch obv, but her reasoning was actually actually understandable.. the movie didn't really tell much about it tho, nor even the teacher who's probably the worst teacher ever, so i get why peoplr doesn't immediately catch on these traits with the characters cause it shows very little of it 😔
There was a time in elementary school where I was the bully, I started a playground gang and tormented all who had bullied me. All of us were given nearly a month’s worth of detention and we were all held equally responsible for our actions, including those who had previously bullied me. Nobody in Ishida’s class was more to blame than the teacher. He knew it was happening and ignored it all until it reached a point of no return. Ishida was the one who took it the furthest, but nearly everyone in the class was responsible at some level, and the teacher knew that. Ishida was turned into a pariah so everyone else could diminish or outright deny their responsibility. Ueno most of all.
i love this movie so much. i tear up everytime i rewatch it. the sound design and animation is so beautiful. also the emotional aspect of it is so human and relatable. the character arc of ishida is also one of my favorite ones. the X's to represent shutting himself from his surrounding is such a clever way of showing how he's affected from being a bully to being bullied. and at the end when he finally felt connection with his friends, the X's peeled off from the strangers' faces signifying he's allowing himself to feel again is such a powerful scene and the music that goes along with it is just beautiful. it never fails to give me goosebumps. shoko being too kind to everyone and despite being constantly bullied hurts, even when theyre teens she accepts everything and blames herself. just because she's different. it hurts more that this kinds of things are real and people like shoko exists. full of self hatred for what others make them feel. i know one of the points for this movie is forgiveness but i personally cant make myself interact with ueno if i was either shoko or ishida. yes i'll forgive her, but after that it's better to cut off people like her and move one with life with a better mindset. loved your reaction!! hope you watch werewolf children. it's also a beautiful animated film and is as heartwarming as it is sad.
Two of my bullies in 6th grade apologized to me for their sh*tty behavior a decade or so later when they actually grew up. Since they apologized and acknowledged that what they did was horrible, I decided to forgive them even though two decades later I'm still unpacking the trauma that came with all that. So yes, it is actually possible for former bullies to realize they f*cked up and apologize to their victims. Also, I'm hard of hearing myself. And autistic. Even without the trauma of abuse and bullying when I was young I would still be quite a lot like Shouko in personality and behavior. I feel like a burden all the time because all my life I've needed support and accommodations in some way or another. Despite all this I'm trying to be a good person, wanting to give love to a world that very much doesn't love me back. I'm still working on not being so much of a doormat, but this comes with the territory of people like myself and Shouko with a history of abuse and bullying. Also Clariss, I highly recommend you revisit the movie someday but with the English dub. They hired a deaf actress to play Shouko and she does a wonderful job!
whats sad is during the early montage part at around 2:25 theres a slight detail of ishida got back home and his mom was cutting young nishimiya's hair but her hair is all messy and theres a leaf on her hair, hinted that she also got bullied even before she moved to ishida's school
This movie was beautiful. The movie is the message about a lot of tough subjects that goes on. Bullying, depression, isolation and so much more. I love this movie because hoenslty it really did save my life and it is really hard to watch this movie sometimes but I do appreciate you watching this beautiful movie. Too everyone who read this and struggling, you got this, keep going 💪
This is the movie that has had me bawl my eyes out over and over and I adore it, I also own the manga which is worth a read for a few extra little bits not in the movie.
My favorite part of the movie is the firework scene when it shows the dark haired girls living situation. She lives with her grandfather and has 3 siblings, which explains why she told shoko that she didn’t ask about their lives. My guess is she had to take care of all of her siblings and I don’t condone what she did, but I love how it brings her character into a new light.
AAAAAAAHHHHH SO HAPPYYYYYYY!!! This is one of my favourite movies for obvious reasons, but I highly HIGHLY recommend that you read the manga (comic) that this is an adaptation of. You get a lot more context for a lot of characters, especially with Ueno, Kawai (who I hate), and Nishimiya's mother. There are a lot of sites that you can read this for free online from, if you're interested. But - be prepared for a wall of text - Notes: - In the scene where Shoko tries to tell Ishida that she likes him, he didn't reject her. He purely misheard her. The reason why he said "the moon" in response is because the japanese words for Like (suki), and the moon (tsuki), sound extremely similar. It's a common play on words in japanese literature for this reason. There's also a cute scene in the manga where Yuzuru teases Shoko about this while Yuzuru is teaching her annunciation. - I love that you called out the teacher about if he knew what was going on, why didn't he stop the bullying. He is an awful teacher because he just goes through the motions of teaching the class, but doesn't care about the students. He actively refused to get involved until there was a complaint from upper management, and was too quick to use Ishida as a scapegoat to shoulder all of the blame. He is legitimately the worst character in the entire story. - In the ferris wheel scene, while Ueno was too abrasive and went about that in the wrong way, she did bring up a somewhat good point when she called Shoko out for hating herself and that she wasn't willing to hear Ueno. Now, to be clear, Ueno was absolutely projecting her own emotions onto Shoko, and that is another can of worms, but she was a little bit right because Shoko was being too focused on her own self hatred that she was refusing to "listen" to anyone else and understand how they feel, which is punctuated by her eventual decision. I think there's a lot more to the conversation in the manga which adds to this point, which is why a lot of the nuance is lost in the film adaptation. - I would also recommend looking at the english dub, if you want. I personally find that the voice acting in the scene where Ishida's mother confronts him about his intention for self unaliving has a bit more oomph to it than people give it credit for.
Thanks for the reaction and the cryalong. I just wanted to mention a few things where the movie lacks details from the manga. E.g. Ueno has a crush on Shota since forever and blames Shoko. She's still behaves really badly but in a way you can at least understand why. The teacher is also way worse in the manga. Oh... and there's quite a translation error in that version of subs. Shota is actually saying "I want you to help me live".
After seejng your reaction to Your Name I suggested this too....haha didn't expect it so soon lol. But here we are. Glad you liked it. The two films get compres a lot as they are both gorgeous dramas that were big hits that came out the exact same year (2016 I believe). I prefer this one over Your Name as I think this film is the more powerful film overall. I actually had gone to the library and saw the manga to this and read it on a whim and absolutely loved it....then 6 months later this film came out and I was like "Wow, I just read that....its a film now?! That's awesome" and it didn't disapoint lol. Fun Fact. If I remember correctly the story is based off the authors not own experiences but the experiences of someone she knew in real life. (I forget all the exact details) And secondly they got an actual deaf actress to play Shoko which is amazing as it adds to the authenticity and emotional weight of the story. Great film.....one of my favorites.....not my absolute favorite anime movie but its up there. When Ueno is beating on Shoko and your like "Oh man you are vile" it just reminds me of when Blind Wave reacted to this movie and when Shoko's mom comes to slap her one of them said "who's this?" and Eric just exclaimed "It's Justice!" lol Glad you liked the movie. I knew you would.
It is a subtle difference, but it does change the conversation. "I want to help you live" means that he is there for her. "I want you to help me live" means that he isn't strong enough without her
Based on a Manga which I'd love to read because it has more I hear, but I love this movie too much to risk reading the manga making me look upon the film differently. When I saw this and it said "I want you to help me live" I died. Much more powerful than "I love you" to me.
Anime is really a very special art medium, i know u can get emotions from real stuff too but anime and different stories and feelings mangas can provide and instill in you is truly unique.
The voice actress that does nishimiya’s voice is actually deaf! So I love that little detail! (I don’t know if the English actress is or if it’s the Japanese voice actress is or both.)
I watched it as a recommendation as a recent work from Kyoto Animation after their Studio One fire. It almost gave me a headache the first time as it is so heavy, but it shows social anxiety and how we are bullied but have also not done our best often to not bully others - often as a response to someone dominating us - to me it was a sharp humour I used to defend myself with to bigger people where I could turn the attention back to them with words I used to defend myself with OR to get attention often too make me think people thought I was terrific - but then did not realize how I sounded to the person. Niki is a covert narcissist - and the manga goes into it more, but she is the most toxic for everyone as she makes for the hypocrisy of how he paid the price but the rest went on thinking "we did not do anything wrong" - so they never learned from it to be better people (so the shaming everyone lives in terror of - "the rest" avoided that by turning on him). For Niki the character which is large in the manga but barely in the movie - the tall guy - when Niki is saying Shoko should not have tried to kill herself - she is talking over the shoulder of a deaf person and is talking to the crowd and not Shoko really - and the guy says to her "oh you are a good person" and she beams to him saying "yes I am".
I would also say the original manga version of this is also worth a read since they had to cut a lot of it. There's more to Mashiba and Shoko's mother and how the mother's decisions also affected Shoko and her sister 💔
edit: damn i just realized my words are a little aggressive LMAo i've just seen people have no sympathy for Shoya at all like yeah he did bad shit, but he was encouraged to by his environment and never once scolded for it until it escalated. you've been realizing everything i've said pretty quickly after i type it lol 7:47 No not, "there we go" he was about to take responsibility for his own actions. you should never be immediately screaming at a child like that, especially not while hitting the damn board. as a teacher, you have NO IDEA what is going on in a kids home life. worse case scenario, this could've been learned behavior from abuse, and screaming at the child will automatically rule you out as a safe adult to confide in. also, hes not the ONLY one to bully her. 12:15 total isolation is NOT a way for a child to learn a lesson. its a consequence of his actions, sure, but its also drastic. he is not an unredeemable evil human being, and no developing CHILD should be isolated like that. its not proportionate. he should have detention/suspension and mandatory therapy, not being the scape goat for bullying that was mainly cause by the teacher shoving most of the work to accomodate Shoko onto the other students.
When Shoya ask for help from God to give him one last strength and that he will try to live again breaks me everytime. Now im crying again lol im such crybaby now
when she say i like you in jp = suki but bcs of her pronounce (since she's deaf) the pronounce is not clear so ishida the mc miss interprete suki (like) as tsuki (moon) bcs ofc he doesn't think of suki (like) since he think he do a lot of awful things toward her it's not rejection
I just feel like the manga knocks things down to lower place to have to dig some of the characters out of. Just for more story purposes, and reading it makes the ending they used in the film even that more powerful. I think anyway.
honetly, this is all the fault of that teatcher... he himself bullied ueno, and that made ishida feel bad for ueno... he was a terrible teatcher, didnt care about his students, didnt pay ttention to them, didnt try to HE, HIMSELF include nishimia, he should be learning sign language on his free time, HE should be writing everything he was saying on the blackboard while he was still learning, he should be askig her to stay after class, to make sure to give her support and say "are you understanding the class? do you need me to spend some time alone with you to help you? is there anything i can do to make y class better for you?" have that teatcher acctuly cared none of the bad things would have happened... as someone who have spend a lot of time with children, and tought them a few things and am working to become a teatcher, that guy DISGUSTS ME DEEPLY it is like mr. myagi once said "there is no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teatcher"
I've watched several reactions to a silent voice and blondie is always the one who pisses me off, shes the worst in the movie, 0 consequence for the bullying and backseat bullying she did, and she always manages to make every situation about her. After watching so many reactions I cant stop seeing her playing the victim in every scene she's in.
To be fair "moon" (tsuki) and "like" (suki) can sound very similar. And in Japanese it's very common to drop/omit pronouns like "I" and "you" (which she did)
Without fail, I see a variation of this comment every single time this movie comes up. I don't know if it initially started as a joke or as a half-remembered fact - all I know is that someone said it, people read the comment, and have subsequently spread it throughout every discussion of A Silent Voice without ever questioning it. The problem is, there isn't a grain of truth to it. First off, the movies came out in different years; A Silent Voice was never even submitted for Oscar consideration by the studio, but if it WAS submitted and selected as a nominee, it would be competing against other animated movies from 2016 like Zootopia, Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life as a Zucchini, and The Red Turtle - not 2017's Boss Baby. On top of that, Boss Baby never even won a single Oscar in the year it actually was nominated, and Coco won Best Animated Feature that year. Make sure your facts are facts, people!
@@jesserolufs715 you should check your facts too. It was submitted for the 2017 Oscars. Check their page. I do admit that when people say "it lost to boss baby" is not very clear. What happened is that boss baby got the last spot in the final group of nominees together with coco and i can't remember the others In 2016 your name had the same problem. Submitted but not even considered
idk if anyone said this already, sorry if so but in japanese "i like you" and "the moon" sound VERY similar. ("suki" and "tsuki") so much so that there's actually like a common poetic language thing/in joke about how saying the moon looks pretty is an indirect way to say you like someone. coupled with the fact that shoko, as a Deaf woman, has trouble enunciating and pronouncing to a certain extent, it would be really easy to mishear what she said. i really don't blame ishida, it was just unfortunate.
also the two moments that really hit me in the gut every time i watch this are shoko saying she hates herself, and yuzuru explaining why she took photos of dead animals.
Except she did change. Not between elementary school and high school, but by the end. She even started learning sign language. She realized that apologizing is just how Nishimiya is and she doesn't necessarily have to like her. To be fair, there are a lot of people who are still real jerks in high school but grow up after that. Her change looks like it's starting right at the end. Kawai is the real one who didn't change, she still is up to her same old victimization act. It's not her fault she didn't get all the cranes, she tried, as she makes a scene crying about it. And yelling when talking to Nishimiya in the park so everybody can see her being a good person and telling Nishimiya good things.
Getting someone you know to go do stuff in your place is something you only do with close friends. It shows how much Yuzuru has grown to see Shoya as a friend when she saw him as an enemy when they first met.
Ueno is the worst kind of person, especially during the ferris wheel scene. I don't get what people who say that they sympathize with Ueno, see in her.
Ueno is self aware. Kawai is not. Rest of what you are missing is cultural context, Japan is not the same as Western world. "Meiwaku o kakeru" is something that no Japanese person wants to do.
Ueno is some way being sympathized bc of manga where there's more context to her character, Ueno didn't hate Shoko from start, she wanted to help her and did so, but bc the teacher didn't bother to help Shoko during lessons Ueno took things in her hands (taking her notebook and writting what teacher said), which caused her to get trouble with lessons herself they were kids so they had simple mind "if me helping her means me getting trouble, then i don't like doing it", when out of nowhere teacher came and said they will use 3 minutes of break to learn sign language Ueno was angry bc why would she waste her time just to learn something just so someone that caused her trouble would have easlier, not to mention that the teacher embarassed her reading in front of whole class while Shoko (who let's be real completly sucked at reading) went off without word, Ueno thought that Shoko was in some way favouritised
Also after Shoko started to get bullied Ueno felt guilty for it as teacher asked her firstly letting others throw blame on him even when Ueno tried to help him out, that guilt with previous emotions about Nishimiya caused her to all negative emotions throw on her instead of Ueno Not to mention that Ueno loved (and still does in the time of action) so it also is understandable why she picked it a fight with Nishimiya (note understandable, not right) bc someone she loves got hurt bc of someone that already caused pain to her loved one And if you notice Ueno is changing with the action, at first she is ready to bully Nishimiya with Shoko like in old times, after getting to know what Shoko was doing she tried to tolerate Nishimiya while trying to get Shoko to be friends with old pack (like Shoko did with Nishimiya) just to somehow accept Nishimiya in the end
Hello I'm really new to your channel but i love your reactions and i was wondering if youd be willing to react to a series if so i highly recommend Arcane its trully amazing and hold lots of emotional depth
Ugh, Silent Voice being compared to Your Name is such an insult to this movie. Your Name had amazing visuals in service of a "they love each other so be sad" story that made little sense even outside of the vague and inconsistent supernatural elements, because the two protagonists were "in love" first and "characters" second. This film blows Your Name out of the water and it's not even a contest.
12:08 this is a really weird part, so it's okay for him to suffer years and years later with isolation and depression but not everyone else that did it as well...as long as there is a punching bag that suffers.....did that not strike you as something wrong? and also he is the only one who tried to reach out and make up for what he did as shown in the first previous 10 to 12 minutes. when someone goes through redemption imo it would not be up to a point of inducing suffering to the point that they would rather kill their self than continue moving forward, the point is to realize what is wrong and make up for it, change and that's it. 18:26 "this is good, he's growing" and all it took is to lay down and accept identity fraud and framing for the stuff a bunch of other kids did 4-5 years ago and not the other stuff he has done like making amends to shoko or helping nagatsuka....what?? (18:55 nah "I MEAN"....yikes wth). 26:00 yeah that's not rejection, the subtitle sucks wherever you are watching this and you did not get the hint of what even is going to happen if a deaf person tries to speak. Ik i am being critical and maybe hyper at that but you reacted to this film so...at least i am paying attention
The kids were awful, yes. But her mom just letting her on her own in a school that could NOT accomodate her is awful. Yes i know it might be a cultural diffrence but damn.

the worst is kawai

Won't spoil why.
as someone with depression who experiences dissociation this movie is a hard hitter for me and will always mean a lot. humans have the capacity for empathy and forgiveness and rarely often expend it to those who make mistakes(no matter the size small or harsh). the feeling of not being worthy to even be alive is a feeling so unfortunately common. the inability to even be able to see people's faces or hear their voice hits hard for me too and it really does take work and time to be able to do it
That incompetent dreadful teacher
All my homies hate the teacher, didn't care enough to deal with it until he was literally forced to
I don't know if someone pointed out, but the animators really rock the subtlety here (3:20) when Kawai purposely opened her mouth as to pretend to sing, knowing that Nishimiya was following in her lead and then acting like she did nothing wrong just show she changed NOTHING while growing up, always puting a facade as good girl and ometimes people like never take responsabilities of their actions as long theres people believing in them
YES! i love that they took the subtle route because thats honestly the most common bullying i've seen, at least among girls. they'll say or do something to make you look bad, and they'll make sure they come off as a saint
"i want to help u live" is a powerful words. Also i love the title Shape of voice more than silent voice . Hihi~
shape of voice is definitely the better title.
@@yaminahmed5372 exactly.
The phrase is a translation error, though. He actually said something along the lines of "I want you to help me live".
@@teschi23 yea it is like that but i was confused. 😅 Because of the subtitle
@@TifaBom engilsh has a bad translation for this sentence
hopefully it was good translated in my language ^^
This film is such a wonderful lesson in empathy. We can all be better at trying to re-frame ourselves to others' perspectives. (Not only Nishimiya, but also Ishida) I also love the fact that we initially despised Ishida, but later was rooting for him to push beyond his past and grow.
I'm also sure it's mentioned in the comments, but I thought the intended quote at the bridge was, "I want you to help me live". I found that and her signed response of "I promise" so beautiful.
25:30 if youre confused there... so in japanese theres 2 words sounds similar.
Tsuki means moon but
Suki means love
so Shoko said Tsuki on accident, mostly deaf people can't pronouce perfectly its very hard to learn how to train our vocal chord and to pronouce properly...
None of them did except, ironically, Shoya himself, which is why he os the one Shoko likes when she gets older, because he actually evolved past his kid phase 💯
the manga of A Silent Voice has a few more extra things like showing more of the other characters and their own struggles they face like Nagatsuka, Sahara, Kawai, and little bit of Mashiba too
the faris wheel scene always pisses me off with how realistic it is but at least Ueno is acknowledging that she messed up and showing that she's trying to learn sign language shows that she's changing
still the teacher is the one who really did the most damage with the detail that he was laughing at Nishimiya in on small scene because yes everyone had a part in this but still he did nothing to help the situation and had Ishida be the scapegoat
No child shouls sign that ever...
pls watch "weathering with you" it also part of the "your name" universe cause taki and mitsuha appear as cameos!!
I am writing this to help out Clariss and this video and this channel with the algorithm 🥰
This is the movie that has had me bawl my eyes out over and over and I adore it, I also own the manga which is worth a read for a few extra little bits not in the movie.
I just love how, at the very end, the person he hurt the most is the one who comes to love him the most…
My favorite part of the movie is the firework scene when it shows the dark haired girls living situation. She lives with her grandfather and has 3 siblings, which explains why she told shoko that she didn’t ask about their lives. My guess is she had to take care of all of her siblings and I don’t condone what she did, but I love how it brings her character into a new light.
I remember sitting down and watching this with my grandma when i was like 12. I swear i do not remember it being this sad 😭
Your sister has a very good taste, i put this above your name for the direction, depth, and character writing
I can't get enough of people reacting to this movie. it's just so good.
But - be prepared for a wall of text - Notes:
- In the scene where Shoko tries to tell Ishida that she likes him, he didn't reject her.
(I forget all the exact details)
And secondly they got an actual deaf actress to play Shoko which is amazing as it adds to the authenticity and emotional weight of the story.
Great film.....one of my favorites.....not my absolute favorite anime movie but its up there.
When Ueno is beating on Shoko and your like "Oh man you are vile" it just reminds me of when Blind Wave reacted to this movie and when Shoko's mom comes to slap her one of them said "who's this?" and Eric just exclaimed "It's Justice!" lol
Glad you liked the movie. I knew you would.
46:19 "i want you to help me live" is more correct
It is a subtle difference, but it does change the conversation. "I want to help you live" means that he is there for her. "I want you to help me live" means that he isn't strong enough without her
Based on a Manga which I'd love to read because it has more I hear, but I love this movie too much to risk reading the manga making me look upon the film differently.
When I saw this and it said "I want you to help me live" I died. Much more powerful than "I love you" to me.
Anime is really a very special art medium, i know u can get emotions from real stuff too but anime and different stories and feelings mangas can provide and instill in you is truly unique.
literaly there has been no other movie that made me cy like this one... ever... and i watched some realy cying indulcing movies...
Great reaction video! Good job! It was genuine!
did you know
what makes the movie really more sad is the music and sounds.
adds poppy music with sad moments makes it more sadder, ykwim
This movie brings me to tears every time I watch it.
Thank you for watching my favorite movie
Thank you very much for your reaction!
I would also say the original manga version of this is also worth a read since they had to cut a lot of it. There's more to Mashiba and Shoko's mother and how the mother's decisions also affected Shoko and her sister 💔
The best animated film ever made....and Boss Baby beat it for the Oscar....HOW!?!
edit: damn i just realized my words are a little aggressive LMAo i've just seen people have no sympathy for Shoya at all like yeah he did bad shit, but he was encouraged to by his environment and never once scolded for it until it escalated. you've been realizing everything i've said pretty quickly after i type it lol
7:47 No not, "there we go" he was about to take responsibility for his own actions. you should never be immediately screaming at a child like that, especially not while hitting the damn board. as a teacher, you have NO IDEA what is going on in a kids home life. worse case scenario, this could've been learned behavior from abuse, and screaming at the child will automatically rule you out as a safe adult to confide in. also, hes not the ONLY one to bully her.

Yes!! Time for a full cry fest!! 🥲
when she say i like you in jp = suki
but bcs of her pronounce (since she's deaf) the pronounce is not clear so ishida the mc miss interprete suki (like) as tsuki (moon)
bcs ofc he doesn't think of suki (like) since he think he do a lot of awful things toward her
it's not rejection
ironically, it was the need for friendship from the people who bullied him in the first place that caused him to become a bully to fit in.
Kyo Ani did a lovely job with the movie adaptation, but I do suggest reading the manga. I bawled even harder reading the manga series.
True. Although even the manga can't top the ending the movie has. Absolutely fantastic 😭
I just feel like the manga knocks things down to lower place to have to dig some of the characters out of. Just for more story purposes, and reading it makes the ending they used in the film even that more powerful. I think anyway.
that thumbnail 🥺😭
OMG YOU WATCHED IT AHHHHH!!
Can you believe that this masterpiece lost an award to BOSS BABY?! WTF 😭
My Favorite movie of all time
honetly, this is all the fault of that teatcher... he himself bullied ueno, and that made ishida feel bad for ueno... he was a terrible teatcher, didnt care about his students, didnt pay ttention to them, didnt try to HE, HIMSELF include nishimia, he should be learning sign language on his free time, HE should be writing everything he was saying on the blackboard while he was still learning, he should be askig her to stay after class, to make sure to give her support and say "are you understanding the class? do you need me to spend some time alone with you to help you? is there anything i can do to make y class better for you?"
have that teatcher acctuly cared none of the bad things would have happened... as someone who have spend a lot of time with children, and tought them a few things and am working to become a teatcher, that guy DISGUSTS ME DEEPLY
it is like mr. myagi once said "there is no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teatcher"
And in Japanese it's very common to drop/omit pronouns like "I" and "you" (which she did)
Im not crying you're crying 😭
I am definitely crying
@@callmeclariss Same, this is my favorite Anime of all time. I'm glad you liked it!💜

This movie made me lose interest in the oscars when it lost to Boss baby..
What happened is that boss baby got the last spot in the final group of nominees together with coco and i can't remember the others
In 2016 your name had the same problem. Submitted but not even considered
kawai is the very definitions of slimy snake.
ueno at least being honest of how she feel and doesnt affraid to show it.
idk if anyone said this already, sorry if so but in japanese "i like you" and "the moon" sound VERY similar.
My favorite channel ❤
Isnt this the greatest anime movie❤
Sometimes the dub is better than the sub and this is definitely movie where that holds true.
I like the inclusion of Naoka because it shows that not everyone changes, but some do. Like Shoya. It's a more realistic message honestly.
I loved your reaction!
I love this movie so much thanks for reacting to it. You should watch wonder egg priority and madoka magica!
You should watch josee, the tiger and the fish
Definitely don't watch Grave of the Fireflies then.
Please watch "Your Lie in April" one of the best writing i've ever seen it has 22 episodes and 1 OVA.
Getting someone you know to go do stuff in your place is something you only do with close friends. It shows how much Yuzuru has grown to see Shoya as a friend when she saw him as an enemy when they first met.
Before we start ayo blue eye makeup maybe not a good idea 😅
omg im actually early for once. really hoping you have tissues and water proof makeup
Ueno is the worst kind of person, especially during the ferris wheel scene. I don't get what people who say that they sympathize with Ueno, see in her.
Personally I think Kawai is the worst kind of person. Don’t like Ueno at all but she’s better than Kawai imo.
Ueno is self aware. Kawai is not. Rest of what you are missing is cultural context, Japan is not the same as Western world. "Meiwaku o kakeru" is something that no Japanese person wants to do.
Ueno is some way being sympathized bc of manga where there's more context to her character, Ueno didn't hate Shoko from start, she wanted to help her and did so, but bc the teacher didn't bother to help Shoko during lessons Ueno took things in her hands (taking her notebook and writting what teacher said), which caused her to get trouble with lessons herself
they were kids so they had simple mind "if me helping her means me getting trouble, then i don't like doing it", when out of nowhere teacher came and said they will use 3 minutes of break to learn sign language Ueno was angry bc why would she waste her time just to learn something just so someone that caused her trouble would have easlier, not to mention that the teacher embarassed her reading in front of whole class while Shoko (who let's be real completly sucked at reading) went off without word, Ueno thought that Shoko was in some way favouritised
Also after Shoko started to get bullied Ueno felt guilty for it as teacher asked her firstly letting others throw blame on him even when Ueno tried to help him out, that guilt with previous emotions about Nishimiya caused her to all negative emotions throw on her instead of Ueno
Not to mention that Ueno loved (and still does in the time of action) so it also is understandable why she picked it a fight with Nishimiya (note understandable, not right) bc someone she loves got hurt bc of someone that already caused pain to her loved one
And if you notice Ueno is changing with the action, at first she is ready to bully Nishimiya with Shoko like in old times, after getting to know what Shoko was doing she tried to tolerate Nishimiya while trying to get Shoko to be friends with old pack (like Shoko did with Nishimiya) just to somehow accept Nishimiya in the end

Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊
sorry I am late 🥺🙏
you should really watch ANOHANA
Ugh, Silent Voice being compared to Your Name is such an insult to this movie. Your Name had amazing visuals in service of a "they love each other so be sad" story that made little sense even outside of the vague and inconsistent supernatural elements, because the two protagonists were "in love" first and "characters" second. This film blows Your Name out of the water and it's not even a contest.
Next 5 Centimeters per Second very good
Please watch Hotarobi no Mori ❤❤🙏 is a beautiful anime movie
I love this movie so much, and I cry every time I see, but I still hate Kawai and can't forgive her
you look beautiful Clariss 😘🥹
