      When I joined the military I was a pretty fit young guy. There was this fat nerdy dude in boot camp with me who was definitely not in the best shape. We had a 2 mile self paced run and you had to make a certain time in order to graduate. While I was chilling and running at maybe an 8 minute mile pace, I faintly hear, "Time is racing toward us, until the huns arrive" as the somewhat skinnier but still fat guy catches up to and passes me singing Make a Man Out of You. The real irony with Mulan, this cartoon, is she is fighting the only person who actually respects her 100% without questioning her sex as a soldier and not just a woman. Its kind of funny, actually.
    Edit: i just want to say, thanks guys for explaining what Im saying in more detail lol. But that is basically what Im saying, that the people she fought against held women in much higher standards including in warfar than the country she was fighting for, which didnt value women much at all in that regard.

      it's not that ironic. or maybe it is. I'm chinese but reading the history the 'native' chinese were honestly worse in terms of sexism while the invaders were less so. Its the same with europe when vikings invade. A lot of women went to the vikings because they were 'less' sexist.

    One thing I noticed on rewatching (mostly reactions) as an adult is how much of a Villain the ancestors are. They don’t actually care about Mulan or how she put her life in danger to help her father (literally one of the most ‘honourable’ things you could do) just about how much she will dishonour she will bring. They don’t even want to send a spirit to help her just to bring her back luckily mushu fails waking up the stone dragon. Then once she saves China they all celebrate like they actually helped and act as if they were supporting her from the beginning they, don’t even acknowledge they were wrong.

      And the actual villain Shaun yu has more respect for Mulan than anyone else around her. He respects her as a soldier and warrior. When he sees her again, he doesn't say "you're a woman". Or "the woman from the mountain"no he says "The Soldier from the Mountain!". And his rage is not that she's a woman, his rage is from her tactical skill on the battle field that wiped out his army. He doesn't make any comment about her womanhood he just starts fighting because he sees a competent fighter who he has to fight.

    Fun Fact: If Mushu hadn't accidentally set off the firework in the snowy pass, Mulan and the army would have been trapped between the bowmen on the cliff and the Hun army at the top of the pass. The firework forced the bowmen to attack early, which allowed the army to avoid being ambushed.

    This movie is based on an old Chinese legend of a common village girl who undergoes a rigorous training program and becomes a great warrior. It's more than about a powerful woman. Notice how the story ends. Mulan does not become a warrior for her own glory. She values family and honor more than anything else.

    • @doodelli
      @doodelli 19 днів тому +21

      The moral of the the original ballad: ”When a pair of rabbits run side by side, who can distinguish male from female?”. As you say, it is not a story about a powerful woman, but about ordinary people working together. I wouldn’t be so quick to say that what defines Mulan is her adherence to honor, since her ingenuity as shown in the Disney film stems from pragmatism. ”Honoring” her father would have meant obeying his wishes and to not risk him embarrassment, but Mulan prioritizes her father’s life over what would be perceived as ”honorable”. This is a pattern throughout the film.

    I wish I could show these videos to all the animators who poured their skills and souls into these old Disney classics. It's like the highest compliment you can give an artist to know that the story they told has translated across cultures and generations like this.

    7:46 In opinion I could say it’s china’s version of The Messenger: the story of Joan of Arc 1999, if you ever seen that movie? It’s also about a single woman who joins the military that led the french army against english in a 100 year war then later burned to the stake for her beliefs and going against the law.

    • @Autumn-xs1bt
      @Autumn-xs1bt Місяць тому +4

      ah, actually it's based on an ancient Chinese legend from what I know

    • @ellie_jeann
      @ellie_jeann Місяць тому

      @Autumn-xs1bt Lol yes I know, I was saying it reminds me of Joan of Arc, even though it's based off a Chinese legend which from what Ive learned is more or less a name of a song or name of the woman within that song (something like that).

    Oh these two aunties are great! I hope we get more of them. I bet they would like Beauty and the Beast and Princess and the Frog. For non-animated movies, I bet they would like to learn about Amelia Earhart, who was a female pilot, there's a great movie about her from 2009. Or movies like Wonder Woman, who is a female hero. :)

    Amazing! I never knew i wanted this content until i saw the title!! These women have it right! Daughters can do anything with courage and passion. Loved it! I grew up on Mulan and I swear it drove how I see myself as a woman. I love their takes about Chi-Fu being misogynistic. I love how they were like "hit him. The bastard" hahaha! Go get em ladies! Could they PLEASE react to Brave? Thats also an amazing film of a courageous woman!

    Sexist characters need to exist in order for a woman to stand up for herself and proove them wrong;
    This is what modern movies fail to understand, like if you make a movie about woman impowerment but everyone is respectful and fair to her, the moments when she shines don't feel as bright

    Mulan is my favorite Disney movie ever, and I don't think anything can knock it from first place.
    This movie always makes me feel like I can do whatever, even though I don't fit the mold of the perfect woman, or perfect person in general. It doesn't matter, as long as you play to your strengths.

    So loved these dear ladies reaction, their laughter was infectious, you can't help but find the humor is this, Eddie Murphy as the ancestral dragon, he's really really good at these voice over characters, and Disney movies like this always have an underlying message, but bring such good humor,..and yess the reverence for family, and the ancestors is very evident and strong in this beautiful story, and the optimism toward girls and women being valued, and recognized is so uplifting, I can tell it brightened your spirits dear ladies, and even if the opportunities were not there for you as young women, to do things outside of what women were not allowed to do, you are yourselves, beacons of hope for the next generation of young girls and women with your guidance, and wisdom that they can do anything, that they are smart enough to do so, my mom encouraged me, and I saw her as a strong steadfast, intelligent woman, who overcame much, and that so inspired me, you to are an inspiration,..Godspeed, God Bless always, 🙏
