This movie gets me every time, other people watching this movie gets me every time. Top one movie for me of all time. Warrior would be second just due to the complexity of the brothers and drug addiction being involved.

A detail that a lot of people don't seem notice is that Miki (the blonde girl with glasses) was the one that first started the bullying. If you watch the music class scene again, she was purposely mouthing the song early, tricking Shouko. It's part of why it always infuriated me she cried her way out of trouble when she was called out twice for her share of the bullying. She may have not been active in the bullying like the others were, but she was just as guilty all the same.

@@FrankFreezy_ if you read the manga, you would hate her way more. Naoka Ueno actually had development and realized her wrongs. You can tell in her own way at the end that she was still trying to understand Shoko. They also go into more depth about her character, and why she hated Shoko Nishimiya. Miki Kawai never changed. She was the same the entire movie/manga. The same devil playing angel. Every good deed she does was only to get her way, like hanging out with Shoya Ishida to get with Satoshi Mashiba. She doesn’t show change, nor does she show potential for change. She gaslighted everyone into believing she was a victim, even herself. She’s the worst.

The beauty of this movie is that most Western films would focus on just the victim and would vilify the bully, but in this movie, you're made to sympathize with both. Shoko hates herself and wants to end her life because she was in a lot of pain and felt like she ruined their friendships. Shoya hates himself and wants to end his life because he was led to believe that he was a monster who didn't deserve connections. He's what you would call the "Identified Patient" or the "Scapegoat". They ALL bullied Shoko, but they pinned the blame on him to avoid getting in trouble. Because he was the one who took it too far, it was easy to believe.
It humanizes the bully and shows how everyone has their own demons that go unseen. No one is a flat-dimensional monster. This movie is so amazing.

People always wonder why does Ishida start bullying Shoko. If you pay attention he hears Ueno"s complaining about Shoko. So to make her laugh he makes fun of Shoko then the response he gets from the group is positive. He keeps going more and more till the group rejects him. Then when he calls out the group they bully him. it's the old adage "The nail that sticks out gets hammered."
Yeah. And Ueno gives that exasperated complain because the teacher humiliated her by saying she reads slow but Shoko who reads unintelligibly gets a pass. In her eyes, that's like special treatment. And she was actually initially helping Shoko with her notes, until that point. The teacher is the real asshole in this. Ishida mocked Shoko's reading to make Ueno feel better.

the more I see comments like this, the more I'm mad I didn't realize how shitty the teacher was during my first view. he was horrible. he could have stopped all this easily
@@FrankFreezy_ You should also read the manga, it goes into a little more detail about the teacher, and the grown-up students confront him at some point. It has a few scenes that didn't make the movie. Also thank you for your great reaction, I pretty much cry throughout this entire movie and I've seen it like 10 times now.

50:16 The misunderstanding happened because the word for "I like/love you" (suki) sounds a lot like the word for "moon" (tsuki).
Ironically, Shoya's confused response about the moon almost ended up being a confession. The phrase "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?" is considered a poetic way of saying "I love you" in Japanese.

It is hard to see it the first time but Kawai (light hair girl) was actually the worst kind of bully. Always creating situations to be morally superior and never taking responsibility for her actions. She even tricked Nishimiya into singing early so she could correct her. Great reaction!

I didn't even know she was a bully until people pointed it out. Sadly, there are a lot of people like her in real life who get away from the consequences, such as trying to blame others or sometimes pretending to be victims, like crying.

to me, both kawai and ueno are monstrosities. i wonder if it's an exaggeration for the sake of a better plot, the thing that ueno is allowed to push her point of view so bluntly and get away with it. don't know about japan, in my country young girls rarely face any consequences due to simply being girls, but i can't imagine a situation like this one (even closely) in our schools. i mean in the end she beats the crap out of nishimiya, then hits her mother back and.. nothing happens, she even has the audacity to show up after that. i would prefer ueno's arc be resolved in a way that she gets a lesson in the end, maybe some good ass whooping or whatever.
1:17:16 one thing the english version couldn’t capture was the fact that he never quite felt like he broke the boundary to call nishimiya by her first name, and he calls her shoko for the first time here. beautiful and heartbreaking.

I mean yes he was the worst bully in the class but what gets me is he was basically the class clown, he started picking on Shoko when he noticed that the classmates started being exasperated by having to accommodate her, and the class was encouraging the bullying, they were laughing about it and playing along + making comments behind her back, even the teacher turned a blind eye until it made things inconvenient
Then when everything went to sh*t they used him as a scapegoat. Blamed everything on him and started bullying him because now he was the "problem child"
So in the end his trauma is partially the guilt after experiencing being the victim but I think a big part is also everyone who laughed along turning on him at the drop of a hat and all his friends suddenly isolating him. The big X on people are the lack of connection to them, he self-isolates as a self-defense mechanism
I love how you broke this down. After my first watch of the movie, I only saw Shoko as the main victim. But he is also a big victim in this movie. Victim of bullying, scapegoating, and isolation.
I love how they show the reality of how different people deal with the guilt, wether Ueno says she feels it or not, you can tell it eats at her in some kind of way. If she didn't then she wouldn't even consider trying to do things to annoy Nishimiya with the sign language. I think she's in denial about the guilt, everyone else has a different way of coping and its unhealthy. I also like how they show that even at the end its not all resolved, showing that it's always a work in progress to get better.

Yeah in the manga they make it more clear as well. After she beats up Shoko in the hospital scene, she calms down, sits down, and starts crying. She says to herself “Am I the kind of person who just hits people because I’m angry?!” Or something along those lines.

This comment is on every single video and not a single person bother to fact check. Coco won Academy Award for best animated movie in 2017. The boss baby shouldn’t have been nominated and A Silent Voice should have, but Coco was great in its own right. I probably would still have given it to A Silent Voice.
I love the contrast of how, at the beginning, when everyone has an X on their face, their voices are in his voice. He's imagining that they're all talking about him. In the end, at the festival, when he's finally able to let himself really see everybody, he realizes that none of them are talking about him. It's beautiful.

the manga delves deeper into various aspects, for example it shows us that the teacher encourages bullying and always knew about it, kawaii's friend had an arc where he hates bullies and confronts the teacher and almost hits him.
They also cut the arc of shouko's mother where it is shown that the husband abandoned them, blaming her without reason for her daughter being born deaf, wanting shouko to have a normal life, she forced her to go to normal schools and did not want to learn sign language but she always things were going badly for him and that's why he got so depressed

I'm very happy you watched this movie. A silent voice is probably my favorite movie ever, why? I'm like Shoya Ishida, I used to bully multiple people throughout my life and I'm not proud of it. I could totally understand how he feels and the suicidal thoughts he had at the beginning of the story. The way this movie portrayed shutting people out with the X was done wondefully to portay his inner thoughts. His journey throughout this movie on whether or not he deserved to be happy after everything he did is super relatable to me and I'm happy that he and I have overcome this sense of guilt in life and finally live on , whilst learning and accepting from our past. This movie holds a very special place in my life and in my heart.
Oh my goodness thank you so much for sharing that. I think this is the one time I can really say “I feel you” and really mean it. I’ve had a similar journey where I hurt people that cared about me and there was a time in my life when I felt like I didn’t deserve forgiveness or deserve any friends. That is why the last scene of him crying and seeing all the people's faces hit so hard. It was cathartic. I’m happy for you my friend.

i used to be on both sides of the table, at first i was bullied, a lot, but then i started to bully another guy, who was in the same class, he was the target, in hopes i woulg get rid of my bullying(i wasnt as harsh, and i wouldnt be as harsh as those that did it to me), but it didnt stop, so i became the bullied once again, but i stopped bullying because i saw no meaning in it. But i still like Shoya, couldnt get myself to like people around me, so it was a breath of fresh air in the last two years of school, where i had a friend group that were real friends, and we still are. and the ending scene where Shoya just opens up to everyone made me cry(even now after rewatching it with Freezy), even tho i forgot the last time i cried, because i used to hold back my emotions so much.

Some little things to notice:
~ At the beginning of the movie, Shoya tears the calendar in half randomly to decide what day he plans to end it all and he marks it with "final day" later he adds back the rest of the calendar after meeting Shoko again for the first time.
~ The ear that Shoko loses her hearing in is the same ear that Shoya damaged when they were kids, alluding that the complete loss of hearing was due to his actions, it's also the same ear that Shoko's mother rips out the ear-piercing on Shoya's mother.
~ At the festival when watching the fireworks, when Shoko goes to leave she signs "Goodbye" instead of the less formal "See you later" sign that Shoya uses and they had been using "See you later" until this point in the movie. Showing that Shoko had decided to not see him again.
~ Suki means "like" and Tsuki means "moon" so it's not too far of a stretch that Shoya misheard Shoko when she confessed.
~ When we hear the other high school students gossiping and talking bad about Shoya its actually his own voice saying the words, meaning it all in his head, at the end of the movie we hear the voices of others around him talking about the school fair, which means for the first time Shoya is truly seeing/hearing those around him.
~ The origami paper cranes Kawai gives Shoya are givin in Japan to sybolize 'well wishes' and there's supposed to be 1,000 of them to make the wish come true. They're typically given to the very sick and ill as a way of saying "we hope you get well soon."
~ The blurry image at the end of the film is theorized to be the final scene of the manga in which Shoko and Shoya are graduating high school together, some also see it as the light at the end of a tunnel.

I always imagined the blurry photos as being able to see people again. At the start I had no idea what the photo was. At the end, I could make out a person, then several. Like you're letting them in again

15:10 She said, “I’m trying, you know!”The subs on this version are different, but in the one I watched she said, “I’m doing the best I can!” That line always breaks my heart because of how much she’s hurting after being bullied for something she has no control over. She’s working so much harder than anyone else just to live happily and people are actively trying to destroy her emotionally.
This really hit me. She had every reason to hate the world and hate people, but all she did was try to love them even more.
i relate to shoya so much, his social anxiety and the fact that he doesnt love himself until the end of the movie because he finally has people that he can call friends and people that finally accept him, im still struggling with these things, its hard to talk to people because of my social anxiety so i just block them out of my vision or try not to make eye contact so that people wont talk to me, this movie made me cry so much.
I hope it gets better my friend. In fact, I know it will. The way you identify with this movie/character and your emotions shows me your heart is in a good place.
Social anxiety is a tough situation to be in. I just want you to remember that there are so many people out there that will love us and make a community for us regardless of if we think we’re not worthy.💛
During the dream just before the bridge scene at the end, Ishida is saying 死のーと思ってさ, which is literally translated as "dying I am thinking." I think it's best translated as: "I think I'm going to die." The reason why Shoko is running to the bridge and she then breaks down crying is because Ishida said goodbye to her in her dream; that he's going to die now. When she gets to the bridge and realizes that he's not there, she thinks he has died, and that it's her fault. But many people miss this because the translation is off. But it's actually a really emotional scene. And then the Koi Karper connects her to Ishida, and he wakes up because he hears her cry (it's somewhat implied that if this hadn't happened, he may have died anyway).

I've also had my share of hurting people and going through things. While I'm more the type of person who was bullied than caused it, the guilt that haunts you when you hurt someone is real. Be kind, no one deserves hate.

It wasn't, actually. We see the bricks rushing up to meet our protag. Him falling into the water was a poetic way of showing us what he felt in his last moments. When hitting concrete, felt like falling into a stream.

In the manga it was actually a river... or so that was what it was written in the website i read, He was even actually planning to just let go of shouko cause theres water but he remembered what hirose said about falling into water pretty high
It actually is a pond/river though. If you watched back closely with all the ambulance light, you can see that the two old friends of Ishida drenched from saving him. Them being the one who saved him was a really beautiful coincidence

Ueno (black one hair girl) is one of the most interesting characters for me. You have to remember she’s the first person that actually helped Nishimya. She was a kind character until she realize realize helping nishimya is a burden according to the manga she lost time of taking notes on her self because she was helping nishimya to much. Nishimya left and the hate that she had on Nishimya never got treated then actually grew. Kawai in the other hand is the character I hate the most she plays the victim all the time and always think she’s better than everyone else. When they were practicing singing i don’t know if everyone seen it but the reason why nishimya started singing because of her when she moved nishimya think that they started
its interest in to learn how ueno changed from being kind to Shoko. thanks for letting me know that peace from the manga. It makes sense how that added to her frustration. Not justified but I understand.

@@FrankFreezy_ in Ueno head when she was Elementary Grade school student “if only she didn’t come here we didn’t have to lost Ishida” I mean is true that if she didn’t came that wouldn’t happen. That’s why I really HATE the blaming game is not her fault that she’s deaf… she tried making friend. If you blame her you need to also blame her Mom and Dad for bringing her out of this world and blame the grandmother for bringing the Mom out of this world it keeps going and going…

As someone who experienced exactly what Shouko went through, I'm now glad my attempt was a failure. I'm happy to be alive, but the trauma from the bullying, abuse and hoh is still here. Koe no Katachi is my all time favorite anime. I loved your reactions.

I think the worst charactar in this movie is the teacher , he was so lazy to do a thing until it gets way out of hand then he made ishida take all the blame when he wasn't the only one , all the class except sahara were either bulling her or didn't defind her .
Bulling is not an act of one person most of time , and the bully either want to feel dominant or gets the attention like what ishida was trying to do to make his friends laugh and gets attention from them .
If his teacher was strict with them they wouldn't get that far because bulling doesn't starts extreme , it's always one step after another and if no one fixed the sitaution it will become way extreme .
Plus if his friends didn't appreciate what he was doing from the start he would never gone that far , and they were helping him too bulling her .
Especially the blonde hair girl with glasses (kawai) she was bully and plays the victem like in choir class she saw nishimiya looking at her so she opend her mouth so nishimiya starts singing before them and then she says to her you starts too soon look at me and starts with me (while thats what nishimiya did) and she was laughing when ishida wrote you made shara desspair in board , and when ishida tells that she bullied nishimiya she act like drama queen and starts crying ( in two scenes one were in sixth grade and the other in high school when she was screaming in the class about what ishida did back then) also when nishimiya visted her after ishida fell she was screaming about why you tried to kill yourself , trying to get all the attention , also when she give ishida the present for being healed she starts crying as always and says she tried to make it thousand papers while in the manga she made her class or club (i don't remever extacly) make it .
And even uneu had a redembtion in the end but kawaii didn't , thats why i prefer uneu over kawaii if i had to pick even when they both are bullies , plus in the manga uneu was good with nishimiya in the stars as you can see in nishimiya dream in the end uneu was laughing and playing with her , but when they starts bulling her she changed because she has a crush in ishida and did go with what he was doing , and the teacher himself was bully when uneu was reading he said why are reading like you are at five thats why she was angry when nishimiya read and the teacher said very good , also the teacher made her in charge of giving nishimiya the home works and what he says in lesson ( because he was not writing the lesson in board he was talking and nishimiya couldn't understand what he was saying) and she thought nishimiya being kind to ishida when he was bulling her because nishimiya thinks he does that because he loves her (which in reality happens sometimes boy bulling girl to get her attention) so she was jealous of her thats why she hated her even in high school because she saw ishida very attached to nishimiya ( in the end they became friends)
i don't like uneu but she to me less horrible than kawaii
And kawaii less horrible than the lazy teacher who could make everyone avoid all that ( including some student trying to sucide ) if he took his job seriosly and took care of these kids
Thats why i beleive the most important job is being teacher and and its the most career thats deserve respect ( which sadly they didn't gets the respect they deserve ) , not only because edjucating and knowledge is important but a good teacher can make his students better people

Yea that’s the thing I love about this movie. It’s about him trying to do better when he’s the only one who can truly acknowledge what he’s done and know it was wrong, sure it took it happening to him to realize and for his mom to give up what she had, but it’s like u feel me, I love that about the movie because things are never solely one persons fault, lowkey. And you right, a teacher watching this is a great experience, since you deal with young people with these mindsets, generally speaking

I totally agree with you.. I really hate the teacher and Kawai (the blonde hair girl) in this movie.. The teacher knew that the students were bullying Nishimiya and did nothing about it.. He did not even take any responsibility for the way things were and put the blame only on Ishida (who was a kid) for all of it.. The other kids all got away from taking responsibility and turned on Ishida because Ishida openly said things that the other kids were doing with him.. Everyone in the class should be reprimanded too because bullying is never just due to 1 person, and the teacher should take responsibility for it too.. The teacher is the adult in charge of the kids, and while adults can also make mistakes, it is very important for him to show the kids how to apologize and take responsibility first.. He should show them the right way and be a good example to them..
Kawai was really manipulative and fake.. I even hate her name (Kawai means cute in japanese) because she's really good at pretending like she was cute and innocent and can get away with everything because she was so 'cute' and 'kind'.. I feel like the other kids were innocent at the beginning but became bullies because of the surrounding and peer pressure, but Kawai has a black heart from the start. She loves to bully from the shadow and painting herself as the victim every chance she gets. I really hate it when she just started screaming about Ishida's past in front of the class to make Ishida look bad and to make herself look so self-righteous. No matter how bad Ishida was in the past, she has no right to expose his past like that to everyone else. She is just a self-centered, manipulative, and cruel person up until the end of the movie.
At least Ueno is open and honest about her words and actions. She even tried to change by the end of the movie, which shows that she at least has the capacity to become a better and probably kinder person, too, in the future.

This one always gets me because I've struggled with mental disorders all my life. This movie does an amazing job depicting what it feels like going about your day, but feeling isolated from everyone around you. And it's hard to navigate your feelings when you're a kid, so by the time you get to high school, or adulthood, so much damage can have already occurred. Which is why I do try to be nice to everyone and give them a chance. You never fully know what others are going through.

Personal favorite of mine, hard to get through. Very real feelings, as if the writers have gone through something like this. This movie took its time and paced itself well. Admitting you can’t control everything is hard, and not everything will turn out how it’s supposed to the first time. You *can* make amends, people *can* change. Grudges are just as hurtful to yourself as they are to the other person. People like Nagatsuka hold it all together with their immense hearts. Understanding Ueno is hard too, until you realize she’s always loved Ishida and has had to grapple with the fact he doesn’t feel the same about her. Shimada, to me, was a representation of society. It can be cold and uncaring, there’s an eb and flow, but in your moment of need, you might just find they’ll be there to help you.
I love your thought process and analysis of the characters what they represent. This is a very impactful movie for me after watching it.
I find Shoya a very good representation of how it feels to have depression and how social anxiety feels like. The movie overall has a great depiction of how life would be for someone with issues similar to his and how bullying can impact a person even if the person bullying doesn’t realize it. It’s just overall a beautiful movie.

It’s so hard not to, it’s beautiful and painful
I think Ueno is a much more nuanced character than most give her credit for. It’s true that she’s the one who least matured before to after the time jump; but her primary motivation is that she’s always had a crush on Ishida and therefore felt threatened by Shōko and the attention he gave her. That’s why Ueno helped nurse him every day in the hospital. She was also the one who called everyone else out for how they partook in the bullying and used Ishida as a scapegoat to escape guilt/blame. And she still remembers how well everyone got along before Shōko joined their class, so she thinks it’s Shōko fault Ishida’s life became so terrible, and thinks that if Shōko could just go away then everything could go back to the way it was. Which is obviously a terrible way to think.
But it is also exactly how Shōko thinks about herself. Particularly on the bridge when she watches Ishida push all his friends away to be with her; she’s not disappointed in him, she’s blaming herself. She sees all these people that he could be friends with and gets along with, if not for the complications her own presence caused. She loves him, but even if he loves her, she can only see herself as someone who drags him down and will hold his life back, which is why she tried to kill herself. She thought that if she removed herself, everything would get better. Which is why it is perfect that Ishida asks her to help him live; it helps her to finally heal, because she at last understands that her presence is helping to heal his pain, not cause it. And she is now extending that forgiveness to Ueno as well, who I think is just starting to understand at the end that even if things can’t go back to the way they were, they can still move forward together and don’t have to hate themselves.
The only person I can't stand in this movie is Kawai, she's that one person in the group who hides in a goody two shoes persona but in reality is also just as bad as Ueno, she did talk behind Shouko's back and faked crying when Ishida called her out.
Atleast Ueno is honest and is aware of her attitude and hate towards Shouko because she blames her for Ishida losing his friends and also the fact that she is jealous because Ishida mostly had his attention towards her.

100% everyone is quick to judge Ueno since she’s the most honest with how she actually feels. Sometimes you just don’t vibe with people (even when they’re someone as sweet as shoko) and you just can’t help the way you feel. At least ueno is honest. I think if anything she’s just misunderstood. And obviously she could be nicer but sometimes it’s hard to pretend when you really don’t like someone. Kawaii is for sure the most annoying character with NO character development throughout the entire movie. I think kawaii never matured at all. She still thinks she’s innocent by the end of the movie. Never once did she take any accountability for the things she did to both shoko and ishida. And liars are always worst than people like ueno.
Hey, thanks for making this reaction! I know I'm a little late, but it was really nice to listen to what you had to say about the various thematic elements in the movie.
One thing that I think is also overlooked alongside things like Shouko's mom refusing to learn sign language to communicate with her out of denial and Kawai's very concealed and subtle evil is the various bits of body language that portray Ishida as a much more reasonable kid than the others, even though it may not seem like it at first. I think many people already touched on how a large part of Ishida's incentive to continue bullying Shouko was him thinking that he was doing everyone a favor because of the validation he received from his classmates. But I think that, if it weren't for that, he shows much more hidden empathy for Shouko. When the sign language assistant first appears, we see Ishida in his desk attempting to learn the signs, but immediately stops when he hears Ueno complain about it. We also see that Ishida actually makes the ONLY attempt to take accountability when the principal is talking to the class through the very slight raising of his hand, but that moment of redemption is hindered by the teacher who at that same moment is finding someone to pin the blame on to escape his responsibility as the teacher in the situation. Through various dialogue too, like when Ishida says something along the lines of "You should try harder or people are going to hate you", we see that Ishida never really found any personal pleasure out of bullying Shouko, but rather did it out of obligation to his classmates. Unfortunately he never saw beyond that and ended up taking the fall for everyone.
Ueno also is a much more tragic character too given how she has feelings for Ishida, which is why she sees Shouko as this obstacle that supposedly prevented Ishida from being happy. From being happy with HER and their friend group. She and Shimada both have a strong guilt- not for bullying Shouko- but for ratting Ishida, and this is very easily seen through how Ueno nurses him and how Shimada ends up saving him from the fall. Her being the first to be called on and to start the chain of responses that begin blaming Ishida probably made her feel horrible, given her feelings for Ishida. She then twists the logic so that she can blame Shouko for all this instead.
We see many of these dynamics of characters playing off of each other to justify their actions (Ueno going from nice/impartial to actively mean when Ishida begins picking on Shouko, Ishida beginning to bully Shouko as a way to make Ueno feel better about being called out, etc.), and sadly it goes unrecognized by many viewers. A lot of nuance that just doesn't get enough love from viewers. But honestly, rewatching the movie and finding them makes you love those details even more.
As much as the movie was able to story tell effectively, I think it did some injustice to accurately portraying the intentions of some of the characters. You should read the source material if you haven't already.

how powerful and touching is every moment when nishimiya tries to communicate with words. especially the desk-cleaning one, "i'm trying"... given the amount of misery the girl went through, that biblical kindness she displays is simply out of this world. having faced similar problems in school, i doubt the ability of a non-fictional person to overcome with the level of dignity, which is even remotely comparable to nishimiya's. after seeing this anime, i think of her every time i remember my youth. i simply fail to describe the amount of love and gratitude that i feel for this character.

watched the movie today and it was one of the first times i really cried and didnt want to stop the genuine feeling of depression of the movie hit me so bad i fell into a state of depression for 10 minutes

I have never had any interest of anime throughout my life, but after a recommendation from one of my friends about watching A Silent Voice, I tried it, only to cry so, so much in the process of watching it. It's a masterpiece, it truly is. The emotions it conveys and the psychological impact within the movie will forever be inside my heart and soul instead of scarring it. It's realistic, it's depressing, it's mood lifting, I know it has less scenes unlike the ones that are present in the manga, but it is still thrilling nevertheless. I still cannot bare it, I really don't want the movie to end, my heart feels really heavy, yet so light at the same time. Thank you KyoAni, the writer of the manga, and the directors for conceiving this masterpiece in its truest and most beautiful form.

As a deaf teen myself, this movie really hits me. i used to get bullied so much for being deaf that I kinda just got used to it. I always felt it necessary to change myself. but over time that trauma really gets a grip over you, It made me develop a severe social anxiety, being afraid that i will be judged, and not accepted for who i am. so ishidas spot also hits me too. the X's peeling off their face to me is like when you have that realisation that teenagers are more mature than kids, and they are much more understanding, and accepting.
Although the mental scars left from my past will stay with me forever, I am happy to see them fade away as life becomes more forgiving.

I love this movie so much, shoyas social anxiety is so well portrayed as well as the feelin of guilt. The fact he was NOT the only one bullying shouko (the others laughed along and mocked her too, nobody even tried to stop him) and they blamed it all on him pissed me off to no end. @@FrankFreezy_ It does a great job of showing how Shoya became a victim of himself and those around him. Both of them were the victims of the bullying and it nearly cost both of them their lives. And towards the end, they all unite, except for the one remaining bully who leaves all alone, humiliated by the groups togetherness and atonement. Shoko was the punching bag but her kindness and positivity, even while she's secretly suicidal, is heartwarming.
It really portrays mental health struggles, disability and depression so well.

If doubt anyone will actually fully read this and I’m sorry it’s so long but this video actually gave me motivation to write this.
This move to me means a lot. I’ve never seen such a film that even tho I’ve watched it already the next time I see it it hurt even more, this to me is the best film of all time it’s just my opinion but it reaches to me in a way no other film or show has and it’s dear to me. When you said, “I’m so ready for this, I know it’s about to be beautiful,” I was like wait you’re not emotionally prepared but that it’s gonna be beautiful no it’s gonna be a unique experience and masterpiece of a film just wait and see lol. So much little detail in the film from the simplest of little motions and visuals in the world around them just so much that when I watched it again I saw things I hadn’t noticed.
I know there’s multiple films and series where the MC starts out as bad and learns to be good overtime but in this story it’s just such a realistic and in a sort of relatable way to some how Shoya learns the error of his past and use his guilt to try to do better like when he talks to Yuzuru and tells him that he knows what he’s done and knows what he deserves just shows you the understanding the consequences of his own actions full or repent, all towards the goal of never hurting Shoko again. In which we see more where he goes out of his way to find Sahara as she was the only one who actually made an effort to be friends with Shoko as a kids and help them reconnect. I’m writing as I watched the video following along and as it gets to the part where I felt it reached a small mini climax is where Shoko get all dress up, puts in the effort of speaking as best as she can, and then confesses that she had feelings for Shoya just had me broken punching the air cause she went through so much effort just to fall short.
The part of the film when they’re at the amusement park with all of the old classmates to me when I first saw it felt that we had reached the end and they were all finally getting along together especially since it’s a mix of so many different personalities regarding their past and what they are reaching for and to think that we’re getting a happy ending but the film does such a good way of leading us that there’s still more to tell, that dam Ferris wheel scene sums that chunk of the film.
When it gets to the conflict between all characters it breaks and everyone just lets it all flow out at the little bridge and everyone truths are heard and we get thrown back to square one from so much improvement.
You know I didn’t think too much of the summer break as the way you did when and I like it the film really did just takes a step back to give us the time to breathe and just be able to enjoy their little trips, but the little cherry on top is the cake for the mom scene having her be okay having his presence around and then inviting him to see the fireworks was just a form of acceptance of him in a way and seeing that even though he did terrible things even she’s making an effort in trying to accept him.
Now we’ve reached the pinnacle of the story in where it’s best described to me is la moment frozen in time, where one side shows us their true feelings and what they’re willing to do to relieve everyone else of they’re suffering since they’d never truly express what they felt inside, being different from what we are shown on the other half, a flashback a major full with a major amount of self reflection, resent, and doubts with a plead and a promise to do one final action of good.
The closing scenes really showed us that though they were different in their actions or emotions with everything that happened to them and they’d done, they weren’t really so different after all. When I first saw it I truly never got the understanding of why he just let it all out but then after seeing it again I realized it was him accepting it all committing to the plead he’d made that he could do all he said, that he could accept himself for himself and live was just a perfect way to wrap it all together. Seeing Shoko smile just was priceless.
I’m sorry if all this was so long to read I think I wrote like a whole essay so my bad but I’ve been wanting to talk to someone about this film for years now and wanting to just my feeling out about why I like this story so much and I’ve seen other reaction videos but probably this was easily my favorite cause your comprehension of the art inside the film and the minor details along with its deeper meaning following through the plot of everything that happened was just so much more enjoyable and eye opening to things I hadn’t though or seen about this film. This movie really puts into perspective how important it is to be able to forgive yourself for past mistakes and how guilt can eat at you to the point where you aren't living. I'm someone who has always had a hard time forgiving myself and it's robbed me of my own life by always feeling unworthy. It's my firm belief that everyone should watch this movie, especially kids. These habits tend to start or form at young ages.

They were authentic and you picked up on a lot of subtle things and some things that I feel only people who have gone through trauma and have experienced so many complicated emotions, at the end especially. It’s the weight you carried with you from guilt and depression and the realization of how heavy it was, when it finally slips from your shoulders. They cut out the movie arc from this movie (which honeslty wasn't that important) however it did do one thing.
It showed how horrible his middle school teacher actually was. He knew the bullying was going on, he just chose on purpose not to stop it. And after he ripped out the ear piece he knew he would be ruined so he pinned the blame on him on purpose as well. He felt no remorse for anything.
More I learn about the teacher, the angrier I get about him and the system

I've never seen your channel and got recommended it randomly by UA-cam. Best reaction to this movie I've seen yet. I usually skip commentary but I was completely engaged in every word you said. I love your perspective of this. 100000000/10 Safe to say, I cried again which I didn't expect.

When it comes to crying and showing our emotions I always love to say "Better out than in"
I know Ishida is the main focus at the start and he is the one doing the most hurtfull things but seeing people being oblivious to the whole situation makes me always feel uneasy... You literally see Kawai being the first one we see starting this cycle of bullying. People see her crying after being accused and feel bad for her when she's the most viscious in my opinion, she just a little snake who wants to look good in front of people. Everyone knew wtf was happening even the fucking teacher and it's suddendly a problem only because there is money involved and the mother is upset so Ishida is the perfect scape goat with good reason obviously.
I definitely feel your frustration. Unfortunately I didn't catch a lot of these nuances on my first watch through. but after subsequent watches, all of them were terrible. And yes Ishida was made to scapegoat 'cause he was the one that took it a little too far only because everybody encouraged him and no one stopped him
@@FrankFreezy_ Anyways great reaction man, I'm with you on the ending there. The whole middle school part is very packed with subtle details and gives you alot of insight into they're feelings at the time. I think Ueno is very misunderstood admitting she becames hard to deal with later on she was the most helpfull to Shoko in the beggining and for me you see the breaking point in the reading scene and how the professor deals with her. like who calls a deaf girl to read she's not gonna ear you dude like im baffled. and you see Ishida feels bad for Ueno and goes on to be an idiot.
And I hear the teachers even worse in the manga
I think listing a "favorite movie" is difficult because it changes with your mood. Being honest with myself and all my experiences, feelings, thoughts I have had...I think "A Silent Voice" is my favorite movie. I saw it during a very dark period in my life where I did think about doing what he thought of, what she tried. Having a childhood best friend take their own life, knowing how that effected me and others, in all honesty is what probably stopped me...with movies like this, music like hated by life itself covered by Raon... i don't really have friends, so these things help me know I am not the only one with these feelings. That it is ok. Art is powerful. It can help people live.

Anime can really change how you see the world and other people. I'm fortunate to have grown up watching these types of anime and made me more sympathetic and considerate to other people. These are some things that are best portrayed in anime because of how much the characters can express themselves that no actor can ever hope to do. I also have to give props to the voice actors who cry their heart out that you can feel a characters emotions just by voice alone.
I really love this take. That’s really good to hear. I always think about “alternate realities” and how maybe if you had not encountered anime growing up? you might’ve been a different person? It’s crazy to think about I’ve always had this feeling that anime takes the emotions to the extremes in a way actors can’t do in live action and you just confirmed it.

sometimes when i'm watching films like this, i'll raise my eyebrows at the bullying that happens and question if it's realistic - which is silly, because i've experienced it myself. children can be incredibly brutal and it's the strangest thing. like, i'll hear a comment made in a film and realise that people do actually act this way in real life. you usually hear people talking about how kind and gentle children are - but from someone who's had a completely different experience growing up, it's difficult to believe sometimes. of course, there's kind people out there - but you get what i'm trying to say.
I totally feel you. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that these things actually happen in real life. I think that’s just us trying to manifest how we wish things were in real life. We wish things were not as brutal.
Children definitely have potential to be very evil. If they don’t have proper guidance and people teaching them kindness and healthy boundaries.

this is my favorite movie, as someone who suffers from social anxiety it gave me the drive to try and open myeslf up again. unfortunatly i watched it in the middle of a pandemic, so social interaction was challenging to say the least, but now that the world has calmed down i am making progress

This is one of my favourite animated movies ever. Every single time I see it again I cry so hard. Back in 6th grade, everyone turned on Ishida to throw him under the bus. Everyone was contributing to the bullying, but by making him look like the notable offender, they got their scapegoat when consequences came around. From that point it was pretty easy to divert their bullying to Ishida since it's not like the teacher notices anything anyway.
Ueno is both the simplest, and yet complex of the group since she is blatantly open about her bullying. She does not care since she never got caught, like any of them, bullying was more or less a group activity so the kids did it to belong together and she is no exception. The complexity is that when her crush took the fall, she had to bury that shit down and Nishimiya remained her target, not for bullying, but the reason her crush on Ishida was blocked. That leads to full on jealousy in highschool since to her, it seems like her crush is now choosing the "dumb girl we bullied" over her.
Kawaii is way more insidious, it's all about appearances with her. She never stopped the bullying and she laughed and talked behind Nishimiya's back as much as anyone else, but when consequences came, she played the victim card. Every time some conflict comes up, it's always "me me me" with her, she just doesn't want to consider anything that could put her in a bad light to the very end... like even when she apologizes it's to make her look good, she's awful.
Great analysis of all the characters. I definitely didn’t catch everything during my first watch so I appreciate this.

I was going to hammer at the "just gimme my check" teacher and "why would I learn sign language" mom, but I was already going long enough and the adults are fairly background characters anyway.

Hey man, loved the reaction. So glad you loved this movie. I just wanted to clarify in case anyone else hasn't - when Ishida fell from the building saving Shoyo, he didn't land in a lake. They were in a dense urban housing complex, the water was just a visual representation to show his consciousness fade away from reality into his own head. He landed on concrete but miraculously survived - it's why he was in a coma for so long.
