This song was played at my boyfriends funeral when he lost his battle with depression at 18..I hear this in the shops, on the radio, it kills me but I treasure it
Rip to that beautiful soul I’m so sorry for your own loss with losing him. Treasures we keep that are secret so to me life’s meaning being connected to others souls and are own souls feelings girl love ❤️
I saw them in Nashville, the local independent station played them to prep for the concert. I wish so much that they had made it in America. What a shame. Their lyrics are so good as are the music.
Amurlee M i'm also from Australia and i agree Australian bands are great. i know quite a few but most of the artists i listen to are from other countries. i have no idea why Australian bands don't have as many fans as other artists from America and the UK and places like that but yea
I think it is because of the money in the Australian music industry in comparison to overseas. Due to less money being invested and made there is less corruption and commercialisation in Australia. There is a standard that everyone has to work towards. Australians know their shit when it comes to music, evident by the fact that an Adelaide crowd once walked out of a Brittany Spears stadium show due to lip-syncing. The audience demands a higher standard, so the artists have to work for it. It shows from the shitty talent shows like X factor and the Voice. Contestants in the overseas versions have been successful in one way or another, in Australia though a winner very rarely has any success what so ever. Only a few names come to mind that have actually made something for themselves. Lol, rant aside, I totally agree. Australian music has a high standard, and that is a standard that everyone involved in Australian music can be proud of. Birds of Tokyo leading from the front. Love these guys, from Violet and Wayside all the way through Broken Bones and Train Wrecks, to When the Night Falls Quiet. Lets hope they keep up the amazing work.
Luke FLuke can’t believe some people were upset that “Tokyo” was in the band’s name. Fantastic Australian musicians and an incredible performance of a meaningful song!
I had a bad day last week, I swear, I listened to this song over 1 dozen times. I finally felt better and realized the world I cannot change, I must change me instead. This song got me there. Blessings of Love and Light.
Eerily drove into the town of Griffith for the funeral of my Nan to this song. Then on the way out, the day later, it came on the radio again. Love you Nan. #neverforgotten
To me, this is a song about coming into your own, gaining your own responsibilities, and deciding where you belong in the world. It's about moving forward towards the unknown, leaving your past mistakes behind, and knowing, no matter how dark the journey may look, that you must go on. We've got our hopes and dreams as a lantern, and the love of our friends and families fuel those dreams, brightening our path, allowing us to move through uncertainty. "In darkness I leave, for a place I've never seen. It's been calling out to me. That is where I should be."
There is always a subtle feeling to this song that’s always hard to describe when it first hits my ears, but I have found that over the many years I have been listening to this song, it radiates hope. It comes along with an assurance of comfort, even in the darkest of times. I guess you could say it’s what makes this song incomparable to most, because it’s distinct and it is always noticeable wherever you hear it.
This song reminds me so much of nostalgia feelings of my childhood. Right about 0:46 I can just see myself as a young kid running through small walkways like that when we stayed with my grandma. So many memories... To me this song isnt about pride for young people, rather, its about the stupid and wonderful things we do when we're young.
this is a song about revolution and the struggles of all past, present and future generations to embrace concepts of enlightenment and tolerance deemed unacceptable by the world around them. The beauty of this song is how much it makes you reflect upon the events and people of the past, from the Haitians and their struggle against slavery, the French revolutionaries who challenged european feudalism, to MLK and Gandhi who fought for sovereignty and racial equality. "Lanterns" reminds all of us of mankind's never-ending battle for equality amidst the norms and beliefs of each generational society whether social, racial, or sexual-orientation based.
EdDsTaA1 so sad story also another Bird of Tokyo relate to Walshy is "Anchor" maybe you already know that song too mate. RIP Walshy ... I'll never meet him but i feeling tears and sad
The courage to follow ones heart. To step into the unknown, Even against the doubting voices, within and without. To seek the Light of day And not get lost in the Shadow that seems to be all around. We are Warriors, We are Healers, We are Loving, And We are Strong.
Hi, all this is my all time fav song as well. By any chance (since i feel like we both share common taste in music) what else are your other fav songs that I could listen as well! Thanks greetings from 🇵🇭
Heard this on the radio yesterday after years of not hearing it. Instantly it's stuck in my head & had to listen again. Great song, great band, deserves much more attention than they get. Awesome to hear they are the AFL GF entertainment in 2 weeks
Hey there, birdsoftokyo . I'm originally from Hobart, and I've been living in Canada for the past thirteen years. I've recently attended a Youth Conference in the nation's capital, Ottawa for the Canadian AIDS society, and I met so many different youth who are all affected by HIV, and they are all incredible souls with so many different passions with just one aim: To raise awareness and get better. This song, Lanterns, reminds me of our struggle, where we represent people from the past, present and (hopefully not) the future who have been suffering; many since they were born. As the youth, we are the next generation to get up and raise a voice to what maybe going against us in life, regardless if it is stigma/discrimination, refusal of human rights or even still being labeled "the gay disease". I want to thank you guys for giving me hope for the lyrics and the soft, calming music that you have given us. It's helping me gain a voice, and I want to raise it. To be the best I can. You've given me hope. Kind regards. PS. Love the beards. Keep it going!
Phil Slater Hey man, Im from Tassie too, awesome to hear about the great work you are doing in Canada man, we need more compassionate people like you. Keep up the good work!
Birds of Tokyo, this is a beautiful song of togetherness, and you guys deserve more attention than you get. I have always loved this song since I first heard it (in a movie trailer).
Birds of Tokyo will forever remain one of the most criminally underrated bands ever. Next to Starset, these songs deserve to be heard all across the world.
Certainly one of the absolute best and yet underrated bands. They deserve much more accolades worldwide than they get. Personally I think they are brilliant
Love this song! Someone commented that my 'Phonics Song 2' sounded similar...they were right. I had never heard this before but instant connection now! Great tune! Been covering it in my room all week!
It always brings a smile to my face to remember the times when this beautiful song plays live. Stadiums spontaneously lit by lanterns of mobile phones like a little night sky. I remember seeing it for the first time in Melbourne at Margaret Court when they were a supporting band for Muse.
Even now, 8 years later, this song is still one of the most iconic songs ever to me. It's impossible to overstate just how much Birds of Tokyo have changed my life. I grew up with this band, and now, seeing them at the Perth Orchestra, I can safely say they are one of the best undiscovered bands out there. The fact that so many people know this song is a testament to how well it is written. Even if you've never heard of Birds, you've probably heard this song. over 8 years the band has changed, their music has with them. But the beauty and emotion of this song will never change. It will always be something I can listen to when I'm down, it's a song that I'll live my whole life with.
This song is criminally underrated. It's sounds so radiantly transcendent and gives you chills. I feel like it's the anthem for Millennials and young people for its themes of going out into the world and showing your true self without fear.
Hi this is my favorite song of all time. Since then, I never knew any song much like this. Can you suggest any songs that has similar tone and meaning like this? Thanks mate!
The chills. Childhood memories. Family friends. Surfing. Barbeques. Sunsets. Riding my bike as fast as I can with my mates down the hill. THIS song is for those times😭
This song brings back so many memories most of them are good some are bad. I can't not cry when I hear this song anywhere even in public places. Me and my class back in primary school sang this for graduation. I remember all the fun I had there despite being almost a nightmare to handle on my first 3 years there due to Adhd and not being medicated. I made some great friends there. They made me so happy but now I've lost contact with them all. Even though I could have probably prevented it from happening but I was quiet and shy and never spoke up or asked for any contact info. But this brings back so many great memories. Thank you for making the song and thank you to who ever reads this to take the time to. A student from berwick loge primary school
This song makes me shed a tear. I remember my brother playing a car game and he couldn’t beat it. Then I started playing this song and he won the race first time 🙂

This band is not that famous because this band is from Australia. But they totally deserve it!
very true
Australian bands are usually the best. I don't know a lot of Australian bands but the ones I listen to easily top the majority of American bands.
