  • Battle Of The Best UA-cam Audio Recorders The Sony PCM-A10 vs Zoom H1n Audio Recorder
    The built-in microphones: Both recorders have built-in XY pattern stereo mics but the Sony allows you to change the pickup pattern giving you three different positions. The Zoom is locked into a single position. This category goes to the Sony.
    The Preamps: while testing testing both devices I found that I had to raise the gain levels of the Zoom H1n between 60-70% of it's max to get the right audio levels and the Sony only had to go to 50-60%. The Sony also has much cleaner audio and quieter Preamps especially when recording with the line out. This category goes to the Sony
    Build Quality: Both devices are made out of plastic but the Sony feels like it much more robust. The Zoom H1n feels cheap and plasticky. This category goes to the Sony.
    Pocket-ability: Both recorders have a candy bar style design but the Sony PCM-A10 is smaller and more streamlined. The Zoom is larger and has a bulbous head because of the cage covering the microphones. The category goes to the Sony.
    Price: The Sony PCM-A10 is $230 while the Zoom H1n is $120. Now you do get a few accessories with the Sony like a protective case and foam windscreen to cover the built-in mics. Zoom offers similar accessories and more but you have to buy them separately. The Zoom accessory pack is $25 and even at that price it's still cheaper to buy the Zoom H1n rather than the Sony. This category goes to the Zoom.
    Ease of Use: There are couple of things that make the Zoom H1n easier to use than the Sony. First the Zoom has user replaceable batteries so you don't have to wait until the unit itself recharges, with the Zoom you just put in fresh batteries and keep working. The Zoom also has a nice input dial right on the front of the device that is very easy to operate and make adjustments while preparing to record or actually recording. However, when you activate the hold switch to lock in your settings the hold switch does not lock the input levels dial and your levels can be accidentally adjusted. This is a major flaw and a disaster waiting to happen.
    Now when checking the levels on the Zoom you can do so by just turning on the recorder. The Sony on the other hand you have to either be recording or in pause mode to see your input levels and make adjustments. However, the Sony offers Bluetooth connectivity so you can connect to the Sony Rec Remote app and start and stop recordings, monitor and adjust the levels and place markers. You can also pair Bluetooth headphones to the Sony to listen to recordings wirelessly. This features also allows you to use the Sony PCM-A10 as a Bluetooth MP3 player. Not being able to lock the input levels on the Zoom is a real problem for me so this category goes to the Sony.
    In Conclusion, I will say if you can afford to buy the Sony PCM-A10 over the Zoom H1n do it. The Sony is a better device, it offers more advanced features onboard storage, stronger and cleaner preamps than the Zoom H1n. The Sony is more expensive but when you factor in the cost of buying AAA batteries over time for the Zoom, the accessory pack and a Micro SD card the overall cost of ownership is about the same. If you can’t afford the Sony then the H1n is still a very capable option.

    Appreciate your videos. Helps a lot. In a video you talked about not seeing levels until you start recording. I’m trying to understand the Rehearsal function described in the manual, and this sort of solved it because you see the levels when you press Rehearsal. I don’t fully understand it, though.

    Have not finished video - just got to 1:30 when you're showing audio of the two. At 1:39 when your voice goes up in sony recording "now I found with" there is a lot of distortion, crackling and hollow sound. Does not happen with the h1n just after yet you don't raise your voice same way so unsure if it's a youtube compression problem your post or the sony. I was just looking at some reviews for the sales today and comparisons brought me to the sony (not on sale) and to your video.

  • @shipofthesun

    This is tough. I love my Zoom muti-track recorders, but Sony used to make some of the best audio gear in the world, for example the DA-10 DAT field recorder, but that was a pro device, $3500 in 1990 money, and the best solid state mic pre-amps I've ever heard. The Zoom wins on the input level, when you are in the field you can grab the actual knob and adjust quickly, rather than frantically pushing buttons. The Zoom has a little wider stereo spread, and the Sony is a little more focused toward the middle of the stereo field.
    As you matched the levels(excellent methodology, btw) the Sony became more robust and right there, if you will, while the Zoom's dynamics stayed somewhat flat and muted at the same level. In other words, the Sony preamps sound better. On my Zoom H8 the preamps are closer to the Sony's, but the replaceable stereo mics sound much thinner that my good AKG 451 Chinese knockoff condensers, and like an AM radio compared to my high end Neumann and AKG stereo mics.
    Having Bluetooth is nice, to be sure, and I'm thinking about buying the Zoom Bluetooth module for the H8 just so I don't have to keep taking the SD card out to transfer files. Then there is the issue of file format. The Zoom does .wav files, and the Sony does PCM files, so they usually have to be converted to work with most editing programs, don't know about Apple products as much, but PCM is a Sony proprietary format, so probably needs converting. I would think Sony has an app/program for that, don't know.
    To sum up, if you have the money, go with the Sony, but the Zoom is more than capable of doing the same job with slightly less quality. If I were doing just ENG, I'd go with the Zoom, but if I wanted to record music the Sony would be my choice. As far as multi-track, Sony doesn't make multi-track field recorders, so no way to compare to the H8.

      If someone asks me which recorder to get today I think I'd have to steer them towards some others because now there's all these 32-bit float recorders going around and that just makes things so much easier as far as not screwing anything up. And for the most part they're about the same price maybe a little bit more but still very reasonable especially for what you get. Anyways thank you for the very thought out and insightful comment I appreciate it. Thank you for watching and please subscribe.

    Your video popped up while I was looking for a video to allow me to compare the size of the Sony vs. the Zoom. I was surprised by the production quality and thoroughness of your review vs. your subscriber count -- if you keep this up, I can't see why you shouldn't have hundreds of thousands of subscribers.
    Did you perhaps have the low-cut filter ON on the Sony and OFF on the Zoom while you were doing the built-in mic comparisons? I thought I caught some LF HVAC or wind noise on the Zoom that wasn't present on the Sony, and your voice (which is GREAT, BTW) seemed a bit more resonant on the Zoom.
    Also, if comparing recorders in the future, clip light behavior is very important to me -- is it instantaneous, or does it "flash" for a set period of time when it clips? Is it separate or combined with some other indicator? Or does it have a clip light at all? (Maybe just an indicator on the LCD?) When I record, after I set levels, I usually record music by "clip light," so its exact behavior can make quite a difference in how easy it is for me to use. Perhaps other people are similarly curious.

    • @TodayIFeelLike
      @TodayIFeelLike  4 роки тому

      Thanks for finding and watching my video. To answer some of your questions, I don't remember if I had the low cut filter on with both but I'm going to say yes because I almost always turn it on with all my recorders when first setting them up because I record in my home with HVAC, refrigerator and other noises. The clip lights are instantaneous on the Sony I can't remember on the Zoom and I can't test it now because I returned. I have a lot recorders and honestly I love the Sony and now it has me considering one of their pro recorders because I hate using my Tascam DR-70D.

    Thanks for the review Larry! How well does the Sony deal with handling noise? I'm planning on using it in my walking videos so it'll be mounted onto my camera with a wind muff. I wonder how well it'd do this job because the Zoom very often has such handling noises which you can't avoid even using a shock mount. I'd really appreciate your advice here! Thanks.

      @WhySitHome 2 роки тому +1

      @@TodayIFeelLike yeah but as I said, I have this shock mount. And even in it the Zoom gives vibrations in the audio file which I get. So I was wondering if the Sony would be behaving better.

    • @TodayIFeelLike
      @TodayIFeelLike  2 роки тому

      I'm sorry I misunderstood. If you're getting handling noise with that shock mount you're likely going to get the same handling noise with the sony. The handling noise is not coming from the recorder as much as it's coming from the recorder bouncing around. There are some on-camera mics that actually record at the same time so you could try one of those microphones. I haven't actually used any so I don't have one I can recommend to you but I know that they have some out there. The other option is to use a bracket of some sort to move the recorder further away from the camera to help eliminate some of that shake. However, to be perfectly honest those audio recorders are simply not designed for that so you're really creating a workaround and you might find something that works for you but you would probably be better off with a solution that's more designed for your purposes.

    The thing that I don't like with the Sony is the internal battery. Over time, that battery will get weaker and weaker and for such a great recorder, it should be able to have longevity. With that said, the Sony's audio quality STOMPS on the Zoom H1n, but the battery to something to consider if you are looking for a recorder that will last you.

      I totally agree. I don't understand why products includes more and more batteries that cannot be changed. It just makes the product life shorter. Even manuals says remove battery if not used long time. The rechargeable and changeable batteries are a must. I hate that many good products lasts 2 years just because battery cannot be changed and I don't wanna tear-down every electronics. I have some 10 years old items in use just because batteries can be changed with good Eneloops. I changed aaa eneloops to our many years old baby monitor and now it lasts from 4 hours to 1,5 days again.

    Hi, I own the Zoom H1n. I’m happy with it for what I use it for. I think this comparison leans toward the Sony side. You’re comparing a $100 product next to a $230 product. I would hope the Sony be superior. You should compare the Sony UX series with the Zoom H1n. These are closer to being the same price range. For the money I’d buy the Zoom H6 at $230. I know it’s not a pocket size recorder, but a lot more for the price.

    Missed the auto-level -- which one works best and how well do they work?

    • @TodayIFeelLike
      @TodayIFeelLike  2 роки тому

      If you can it's best to turn off the auto levels and go manual. If you go auto anytime there's a quiet time it's going to start to raise the gain levels, you don't want that you want to keep everything consistent so go manual.

      @@TodayIFeelLike Cannot see the screen, don't have time to search through menus, need faint and loud to be audible, and no way to manually change record level during record. How many reasons is that to have really good auto level?

      Set your level manually to a reasonable level and turn on the limiter to prevent clipping.

    The zoom in the line lev test has a lot of low end rumble noise, not sure why that was. But Sony def sounds better to my ears. But the dif in price is significant so really only a purchase to those more serious about having a mega compact unit with slightly better pre-amps and fully positional built in mics.

    • @TodayIFeelLike

      The Sony sounds better it's smaller has better mics and internal memory. You also can use a micro SD card. It is more expensive but that's because it's a better device all around.

    The Roland r-07 is 100$ cheaper and beats this sony A10 in sound quality. How do I know? I tested it with voice recording and music. I’m returning the Sony A10. Btw thanks for this video, hopefully we see more tests from you.

      Also, i turned off all the settings and left everything on manual mode with the highest WAV quality settings. The only thing about the Roland is that its a tiny bit lower in volume compared to the Sony when recording but don’t get it twisted the Roland is higher quality and I was me testing then at only 50% levels.

      I don't like the Zoom H1n I think it's too noisy. See if you can find a Roland recorder or maybe a Zoom H4n. I understand that price might be a concern but think of it as an investment if you buy the right product once you don't have to buy it again. Where if you buy a budget product once you realize you want better quality you're going to have to spend more money that second time. It's cheaper in the long run just to buy the better product the first time even if you have to buy it used.
