  • This is how the UA-cam algorithm works in 2024. It's how the algorithm finds which videos to recommend, how your videos go viral, how to increase your chances of going viral, and why some channels just won't ever get many views.

    When growing a channel, the biggest (and most vaguely described) thing you'll hear about is 'the algorithm'.

    The algorithm is according to what you said & it is how I see it based on all my chats with partner support:
    The algorithm will sometimes choose to digest the video to people it knows will watch it but it to suggest it to non (what ever your channel focuses on)
    Then it will suggest it to even more & more people that are not at all interested in the content until it reaches 0%
    It’s designed to kill growth by the 2nd or 3rd day.
    Often it will see that a video got 1000s of views & many people are coming to your channel for that topic. You then upload another video on that topic & it will literally not suggest the video for 2-3 days, then all of a sudden it rip suggest it to non interested viewers.
    It is a terrible system that kills small channels.
    I know dozens of UA-camrs that all have this problem. I know them personally & we discuss these things.
    I have a friend that has videos with almost 90k views but he only has 600 subs.
    It’s disgusting. All our subscribers should get our videos suggested to them. But UA-cam refuses to go back to that “Unfair” system lol 😂

    i posted shorts for the first time in February and i doubled my views, but then realized my longform are not being pushed so i made my shorts private and my longform views died. over a month of posting in march and most videos don't even get 100 impressions from a regular 20,000 per video. tried posting a few shorts again but the longform still aren't getting pushed. Is it possible to make a video about this?

  • @theX24968Z
    @theX24968Z 3 місяці тому +5

    this very well explains why one of my favorite channels, the modern rogue, died. not only did they take a covid break, but they have an extremely broad range of topics they discuss on their channel nowadays.
    this also explains why youtubers who try to pivot their channel topics end up tanking so often too.

    • @readonemohamed8310
      @readonemohamed8310 3 місяці тому +1

      whenever you want to pivot it's often better to start a new channel. The only exception is when you can make yourself the content. Than it's much easier to pivot to new areas. But many UA-camrs never grow out of the "yellow pages" stage. They are always that tech-guy or sports-guy or whatever and people don't come for their personality but only for the value they offer.

    Do you have any experience on how viral videos work with the algorithm - my biggest video is a really broad appeal video and it has 2.8M views - but it wasn't in a particular niche my channel was know for and my audience is fragmented from covering a variety of content. I'm now thinking I need to focus on the broad appeal kind of videos loosely in my niche but obviously being broad enough means the niche itself is less important. Essentially Ali Abdal has still done very well making broad appeal videos on multiple topics right?

    • @KamalNehme
      @KamalNehme 3 місяці тому +1

      I think you can do multiple spin offs of your 2.8M views video and it will do incredibly well
      "What the pocket knife community doesn't want to talk about" (When you do this video and it gets 1M views, you can thank me later)
      "What outdoor campers doesnt want to talk about"
      etc... you get the point, replicate your most successful video, you the concept and apply it to new topics

    Hey I've got a question for ya. This channel I'm using used to be my gaming themed channel back in like 2016, I stopped posting for a long time. Would you suggest starting with a new or fresh channel If I wanted to focus more on content about Personal Development and Productivity for creators? I'm building a community called "Flow Creators" that is like directly associated kinda like the other half of my personal brand and I'm not sure if I should just switch up this channel or use a different one. Or for that matter go all in on Branding the channel as "Flow Creators" as the name or using my Personal Name for the channel name. At the moment, I have channels with both names, but I am not sure which to start posting on again. (The Flow Creators one used to be a small creative tutorials channel with like 100-200 subs)
    From your recent experience with the algorithm overlords, what would you suggest?

    I have to agree with the other comments, very well put together and very easy to understand. I have a question though, when you make videos on a Pacific problem, that will only be searched for when the viewer has this problem, what is the best strategy?

    • @CreatorCEO
      @CreatorCEO  3 місяці тому

      Really depends how specific it is. If I wanted to talk about something extremely specific but it would be helpful for a lot of people, e.g. a hyper niche tip about improving retention, I would probably go with a broader, wider appeal title that didn't mention the specific thing.
      If you're actually talking about something ridiculously specific and ONLY the people actively searching for it will want to watch it, just take the views from search and move on to the next video. Or don't make the video in the first place 😬

    • @How-to-repair
      @How-to-repair 3 місяці тому

      @@CreatorCEO thanks very much for getting back to me. I actually make videos on repairing appliances. Therefore people only come across my video when they have a problem so I do not end up with people wanting to watch other content. Because of this, I only end up with gradual growth, but I've been on UA-cam since 2006. I'm trying to find a way to get to a larger audience without dissolving the content value

    • @CreatorCEO
      @CreatorCEO  3 місяці тому

      @How-to-repair Yeah that's very relevant to the world of content I originally come from (been in SEO for ~13 years). You'd have to find ideas that hit search+suggested algorithms simultaneously - exactly like the title of this video that we're commenting on - but having so many search-focused videos would hinder growth too.

    But what about these random 10 secondes videos with millions of views that makes no sense and is not related to what you usually watch ? And everyone in the comments are like "why the hell youtube recommended me that?"
    I really think this algorithm is bad. It's recommending me the same videos over and over again even if I absolutly don't care about them and I can't find new creators that I might like. Plus, it is pushing people to obey the algorithm and create the same type of videos so it has a chance to work, killing the creativity. I recently drowned in these famous "100 days hardcore Minecraft" videos with all the same thumbnail and the same exact boring content, yet having millions of views. I miss diversity and creativity, I miss finding little creators that dare making new type of videos.

    the last line: It doesn't all come down titles, thumbnails etc. Yep there is also something I call channel authority. Even if you have the best video UA-cam will be very reluctant to give you the views. The more views you are asking for, or in other words, the higher the loan the more reputation UA-cam want to see in return to back it up. So you need to have a history of success. And that type of trust can go up and down. You can easily lose it with a few bad videos. But it's hard to build up again.
