The best part of "we named the dog Indiana" bit is that he WAS named after a dog. George Lucas had a dog named Indiana and he absolutely named the character after him.
This is indeed correct it, it is the same type of dog you see in the intro of the movie an Alaskan Malamute as an additional bit of trivia it was also George's inspiration for Chewbacca from Star Wars.
Even funnier: the dog was named after a US state! Hahaa! And that state was named after it having been inhabited by indigenous American tribes! And those tribes were called Indians because Columbus thought he had found India! And India the country's name comes, according to the Oxford English Dictionary (third edition 2009), is derived from the Classical Latin India, a reference to South Asia and an uncertain region to its east. In turn the name "India" derived successively from Hellenistic Greek India, ancient Greek Indos, Old Persian Hindush (an eastern province of the Achaemenid Empire), and ultimately its cognate, the Sanskrit Sindhu, or "river", specifically the Indus River and, by implication, its well-settled southern basin. The ancient Greeks referred to the Indians as Indoi, which translates as "The people of the Indus".
This river Indus in turn was known to the ancient Indians in Sanskrit as Sindhu and the Persians as Hindu which was regarded by both of them as "the border river". The variation between the two names is explained by the Old Iranian sound change *s > h, which occurred between 850 and 600 BCE according to Asko Parpola. From the Persian Achaemenid Empire, the name passed to the Greeks as Indós. It was adopted by the Romans as Indus.
RIP Sean Connery and River Phoenix 😢
They both died on Halloween.
For me, the fun partnership between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery is what gives Last Crusade the edge over Raiders. Then again, every time I watch it, I notice some other cool parallel or moment. Did you notice how everything Indy said in his college lecture was wrong (following maps, X marks the spot) - apart from starting the search in the library!? Just THIS TIME WATCHING with you I spotted how Indy was undone by not following Donovan's advice not to trust anyone, but Donovan himself is undone by trusting Elsa!
Donovan is played by Julian Glover - General Veers in Empire Strikes Back and Grand Maester Pycelle in Game of Thrones. He was also the villain in James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only, which is cool considering Sean Connery was best known as Bond... and it looks like Donovan's gun appears to be James Bond's Walther PPK!
It's not a blimp, it's a zeppelin or dirigible.
A zeppelin has a frame structure and carries people/cargo. A blimp has no skeleton.
This one it´s the best for me!! a fun fact it´s Ford had here 47 years old and Connery 59, only 12 years of difference.
The actor that Andrew thought was familiar is Julian Glover. He also played General Veers, who was in charge of the ground assault on Hoth in Empire Strikes Back
He is also grand meister pycel from GOT
And Aristotle Kristatos, the main antagonist of the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only (1981).
I grew up watching these movies with my dad and this one was my favorite!! It was fun to rewatch it with y'all😊(well, shortened version but I've seen it hundreds of times lol) much love to y'all!
I personally like the 4th one, its enjoyable. You've seen all the mixed reviews for that movie in these comments, but we definitely all say watch it 👍🏼
The idea of Willie's character probably seemed better than the execution. As Capshaw herself said, she had pretty consistently pursued playing what we would consider today as Strong Female Characters, journalists, PhDs, accomplished, independent female roles (checkout SpaceCamp where she played alongside River Phoenix's brother, a very young Joaquin, then going by Leaf Phoenix).
Then Capshaw decided to play this for a change of pace, a shrieky, whiny, near-constant Damsel-in-Distress trope, pretty much for fun and in order to play against her usual type for once. Aaand, it ended up being one of the roles she unfortunately became most well-known for. As Spielberg said though, about the one good thing that came from the movie was he and Capshaw falling in love and getting married. (And they still are today.)
But Elsa *is* a better-written character and more interesting. I also think the way the movie portrays her character is a bit ambiguous (which might be a fault of the editing). In general, she seems devoted to archaeology, but in an amoral way, similar to Donovan. When she's crying at the book burning scene, it seems like it's possible they're perhaps tears of joy or devotion to the Nazi cause? Which wouldn't be out-of-character since she's a Nazi. Or that she's genuinely put off by the book burning because of the destruction of knowledge, which she considers valuable as an archaeologist/treasure hunter. Likewise, she's upset at Henry being shot, and the weird satisfied look on her face when she sees Donovan drink from the incorrect grail confused me for a long time, because when she says, "It would not be made of gold," her tone sounds slightly surprised or like she's correcting a mistake she genuinely made in her grail choice.
But I think now she was supposed to be an opportunist, like Donovan. She's not that with the Nazi cause, but she's also not disgusted enough by it to be at bothered by their general actions, except maybe the book burning. As Henry said, she thought she found a prize. So she wanted glory. (I consider this ambiguous since, though she's not a good person, it's easy to also dismiss her as Just Another Nazi.)
I really like what you say about Elsa, how nothing is clear about her side, but she is a backstabber for sure and wanted the graal for herself, she is definitivly evil in some way
@@olivierroussin4432 Yeah, an’ I think that’s ultimately why we the audience are probably supposed to feel some sense of “well that’s a shame” at her death but also that, along some dimension, it wasn’t entirely undeserved either. Both she and Donovan “played with fire” too much so to speak. Think Mac in CS was similar (except nobody probably cared about him anyway to begin with, insofar as they cared for the story).
I don't think Elsa was surprised or made a mistake. I think she was making a statement for the audience . . .
I am a bit of a completist… Crystal Skull was not my favorite, but honestly, I could watch you guys react to anything, so I said go for it…
In my opinion, this is the best Indiana Jones movie in the franchise.
Honestly if you haven’t grown up with indiana Jones and had to wait years for the 4th one. Then it’s just fine. Like there’s some good bits and then some not so good bits. But I wouldn’t skip it
“I love when people tell me when the best line of the movie is coming. “
YES!!!
The ultimate father and son story.
RIP, Sean Connery and River Phoenix.
Before Connery was cast as Henry Jones, Sir Laurence Olivier was considered to play the role, but fell ill with Pneumonia and had to drop out. Gregory Peck (To Kill A Mockingbird) was also considered.
Olivier passed away on July 11, 1989, two months after the film's release.
The original script involved Indy battling ghosts in a haunted Scottish castle as the opening scene, but it was rejected after deemed too similar to Steven Spielberg's Poltergeist.
Another draft had Indy battling The Monkey King over the mythical Fountain Of Youth.
It was settled that Indy and his father would fight off the Nazis for the Holy Grail.
The film was a box office and critical success, making $474 million dollars ($930 million dollars today) against a $60 million dollar budget.
It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing.
Olivier would have been amazing - but there's a great symmetry to the idea that Indy's dad is James Bond, which is true in a sense - he's even dressed as Bond in Shanghai in Pt 2 - I wish they'd coughed up the money to bring back Connery in Pt 4
1989 was also a pretty eventful year outside of the movies, with the whole collapse of the Soviet bloc, the Tienanmen Square protests, and the Berlin Wall coming down...
John Williams score is just amazing. Can’t go wrong with the first 3 films.
The best indy flick
Me personal ranking from best to least best (they're all great) is 3, 1, 4, 2.
Don't listen to the haters. Crystal Skull is fun and, while it's not the best of them, I think it's also not the least of them.
Has anyone mentioned how by his First swing of the whip they explain Indy's, Harrison Ford's Scar !
River Phoenix as young Indy has always been one of my favorite castings. RIP
Me too! He was terrific.
The best duo Indy and Indy Sr
Also the guy that gave young Indy his hat, is supposed to be Abner Ravenwood, Marion’s father. They cut a line of dialogue out saying his name because they thought it took away from the film, but it is supposed to be Abner.
WE NAMED THE DOG INDIANA
Crystal Skull is the weakest of the films so far, but there is still a lot to like. Indy is still Indy. But it definitely will be necessary watching for the fifth.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is nowhere near as bad as you heard.
I actually prefer it over Temple of Doom.
Same. I enjoy the beginning and end of Temple but I really don't like the middle. But with Crystal Skull there are parts all throughout that I enjoy
This is my favorite Indy movie. I love the relationship between Indy and his dad, the return of classic characters, and it has the best action set pieces of the series. It's also genuinely funny. It's the most re-watchable of the series.
The actor you were wondering about is Julian Glover who played Grandmæster Pycelle in Game of Thrones.
Please go ahead and watch Crystal Skull. It’s better than its reputation suggests and is plenty enjoyable even if it’s not a masterpiece. Personally, I put it on par with Temple of Doom.
Definitely watch Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. You’ll get views either way how much you like or maybe how much you don’t. Either way be fun reaction to the viewer watching the video on UA-cam. I personally like it. I don’t love it, but it is watchable. It can be a fun watch if you don’t go expecting it to be as good as the other three. Just an enjoyable action flick that you can make fun of some of the over the top action scenes, but not a terrible film. Feels more like a live action Saturday morning sci fi action adventure show more than any of the others, which is what it was intended to be. Just nobody expected that and it is more a disappointment than a bad film.
Agreed. It is flawed but it gets way too much hate from people that watched it once and then never gave it a second chance. Often people that come into the series fresh or rewatch it after a while tend to enjoy it.
Glad to see some defenders here. I enjoy the 4th one a lot too. I think the new film is gonna be really crap so maybe people will change their minds after it's come out
I like it better than Temple of Doom. Willie's constant screaming was such a turnoff, it just drove me nuts not to mention the zero chemistry between Kate Capshaw and Harrison Ford.
Indiana Jones isnt getting mobbed because hes "world famous".. he isnt at all. But every girl on campus has a crush on him. It's a running gag from Raiders.
He's pretty attractive I'm straight and even I think he's handsome
"I've only seen once scene", was that the scene between the opening credits and the closing ones? If not, your predicting abilities are off the charts.
The actor who played Donovan should look familiar, he played in Empire Strikes Back and he most recently played Maester Pycell in Game of Thrones.
Guys I will give you another pearl of wisdom that changed my life as well "Believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear" Why would you deny yourself a great film just because others didn't like it? I thought it was an awesome adventure movie, it follows canon, maybe a bit too much Indiana Jones corny humor but a super fun ride none the less : ) Steph🥰
All accurate tidbits from Andrew except for Harrison Ford being a really good pilot. 😂
Absolutely you two should do a reaction to Indy 4! If you're gonna watch it before the new one comes out anyway, then why the hell not? I honestly don't understand the hate it gets. It has some silly moments, even for this franchise, but it's not terrible by any stretch. You two can judge for yourselves when you see it. I'm very curious to see what you think. As far as Last Crusade, this one still remains my favorite out of all of them so far. I'll see how it ranks after the 5th one comes out, though.
Prediction: they'll watch that awful movie and still complain about Willie at least once.
@@dupersuper1938 I really don't get why everyone's making a big deal about that.
@@ChrisTheAspergerGuy Because they are.
@@dupersuper1938 So are they not supposed to say anything about her then?
@@ChrisTheAspergerGuy They say the same things about her over and over. We get it.
You can tell by steph face...she liked this movie more than last 2 Indiana films
I saw this movie in the theater back in 1989 and watched it later on VHS with my dad. It's my favorite Indiana Jones movie as well. Oh, and please watch Kingdom of the Crystall Skull. While it's by far the worst Indiana Jones movie it's still an entertaining adventure and I'm sure it would make for a great reaction video!
What's interesting is that second blade on the "Penitent man will pass" trial, which Indy gets past by doing a forward roll after kneeling. Steven Spielberg addressed this by saying that the Christians who built the Grail Temple in the 12th Century were probably more worried about Muslims getting their hands on the Grail than anyone else. Muslims show penitence not by kneeling (as a Christian would) but by bowing. The second blade would decapitate anyone that bows
The gun Indy shoots through the 3 Nazis on the tank is a German Mauser.
You should watch Sean Connery’s dragon movie, Dragon Heart.
I hope you watch Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and make up your own mind. I didn’t think it was that bad.
That ballon thing is called a Zeppelin not a blimp
I personally like the 4th film a lot better than the second one its fun and have never understood the hate for it
PG-13 came after Gremlins, another Spielberg film. Parents brought their kids at Christmas and left the theater in shock.
Oh my!!
You’re not lazy!
I watched ToD earlier today!
Thanks...
So glad you've enjoyed all three so far. Like others have said, I'm not a fan of the fourth, either, but it'd be worth watching you guys react to it. Who knows, maybe you'll be the few who do enjoy it.
5:47 General Veers Empire Strikes Back
Just know that all your favorite movies you will eventually have seen 20+ times later in life, maybe even this one. Be ready for your favorite parts of these movies to change over time. Or any movie..
I can't like this video enough. SO GOOD!
You could see the influence of the scene with him hanging off the tank in Mandalorian season 1 when Mando is on the Jawa ship in the desert.
Loved the reaction Even thou the 4th is the worst I'd still like to see your reaction
"Friction in the relationship." Donavan's wife in the movie is his real-life wife . . .
I loved seeing Sean Connery like an Older James Bond 007
"Kids are still being Indiana Jones for Halloween."
Ummmm I'm 45 and was Indy for a party last Halloween.
You should watch Part 4 - Crystal Skull... love or hate its still Spielberg, and Part 5 Dial of Destiny is on the way. 4 has its issues, but I like it more then 2. Rank: 1,3,4,2 - 5? Not sure yet... I'm a old bastard and I have seen them all in theaters on release, so I'll be there for 5 as well.
And the uncharted games were inspired by Indiana Jones as well as well as inspired by the mummy
YOU REALLY SHOULD SEE THE 4th movie, it's subjective of how you see it. Actually Marian returns ( Karen Allen ). IT'S NOT SUCH A BAD MOVIE AND THERE ARE REALLY SOME DECENT ACTION AN STORYLINE TOO.
Spoilers...
2 things
1 spoilers
2 writing in caps makes you look like a peasant
I would like to see you guys react to Kingdom of the crystal skull. I find that people who react to it later tend to like it more than those of us who watched it when it came out. It's the weakest entry but I think there's still fun to be had with it.
There is behind the scenes video of IM created the death scene of Donovan using practical special effects. Actor, Julian Glover aka Donovan was in Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back as General Maximilian who targeted shield generation of Rebel Base on Hoth.
Love you guys reactions to the kung fu panda and indiana jones movies from the past weeks keep up the amazing work and yes please do a reaction to kingdom of the crystal skull
CLASSIC❤
There’s a moment in the first Captain America where Silvestri quotes the Grail Theme.
@4:31 In early drafts of the script, this was supposed to be Abner Ravenwood (Marion's father) who would become Indy's mentor. Not sure why they changed it.
Um yes you do
@@SB992REBORN Um, no I don't.
Lol. So Spielberg actually went through the trouble of having mechanical/robotic rats made for the burning shots. He said he had no love for rats at all. Might've even called them disgusting. "But I'm still not gonna set them on fire.." 🤣
In one of the behind-the-scenes for this movie, when Spielberg was directing the Nazi salute shots from the higher-ups for the Berlin Rally scene, he told the cast, "And remember: behind your backs, you're all gonna be doing this:" and held up his hand with his fingers crossed.
But Indiana Jones is ultimately a pulp, action-adventure story as was common for the early 20th century, though an '80s take, so the depiction of the Nazis is a caricature and slightly comical in ways, just like the depictions of the Thuggee cult, or the Shanghai mob boss. In contrast to the starkly different and much more realistic depiction by the same director in Schindler's List. Here, they're evil but also easily punchable by a lone rugged hero.
(Also, Admiral Ossel from Empire Strikes Back here playing Hitler. And Julian Glover was also in ESB as another Imperial officer, the one who lead the AT-AT attack on the Rebel Hoth Base!)
Did y’all really think Indy was gonna kiss after threatening to squeeze her throat?
Note: Donovan was played by Julian Glover, who played general Veers in The Empire Strikes Back, while Hitler was played by Michael Sheard, who played admiral Ozzel in that film.
And Grand Maester Pycelle from the Game of Thrones. He also played as a Greece King from the film Troy.
Sean Connery initially did not want to take the role as Indy’s father because he is only 12 years older than Harrison Ford.
_"Kinda looks like his doppelganger"_
I was little surprised that they didn't just have Vic Armstrong play that character, since he and Harrison Ford looked so much alike back then (he was one of Ford's body doubles/stuntmen in all three films)
Cause he wasnt young enough dummy
The Year of the Sequels
Ghostbusters 2
Karate Kid 3
Back to the Future 2
Star Trek V
Lethal Weapon 2 (Which finished 3rd highest I think in the box office that year)
License to Kill
Not a blimp, a "ridged airship", also called a "Zeppelin" after the inventor. A blimp is different.
Yes, watch Indy 4 it's a must if you're gonna watch the 5th one
Makes me want to watch the Young Indiana Jones chronicles, again.
Maybe try the 4th one yourself instead of skipping because of what others say. The haters are kinda crazy with hate and refuse to give it a second chance. A lot of people hated the prequel trilogy back when they came out but enjoy them now. Indy 4 is no different but the toxic haters are still in that phase of hating it for 2 decades before giving it another try.
Harrison Ford is a pilot in real life: True
Harrison Ford is a really good pilot in real life: 😬
Best Indiana Jones Film hands down!
Yes watch the Crystal Scull
Indiana Jones and TOD- was PG 13, Not Crusade, That's how it got released. Spielberg talked to rating guy and he gave it to spielberg for the film.
Just a small brag but I saw this movie in theaters as a child and I immediately knew which cup it was gonna be.
You guys better enjoy it, cuz Crystal Skull is........something
I just learned that blimps...
*Eye roll engaged* 🙄
Iconic James bond Sean connery
One of the best action/adventure series and to me, Harrison Ford will always be Indiana Jones.
willy wasn't a fighter neither but you didn't gave her a chance :(
Still complaining about her.... 🙄
No rats were harmed! There was mechanical rats as Soielberg said in the naking of.
“Making”.
@@StephenLuke "Naking".
Harrison ford returns❤❤❤❤❤
What is the opposite of eternal life? Instant death! A perfect consequence for choosing poorly.
Indiana Jones...Time to march on with the man.
Please react to Indiana Jones, and the Kingdom of the Crystal skull, I would just love to watch that
Donovan is Grand Maester Pycelle, if you watched Game of Thrones.
Oh, and did you watch Game of Thrones at all? Because that might be where you recognized Donovan, he was Pycelle.
I mean, he's been in a lot but it's where a lot of people have seen him where they don't make the connection for whatever reason. He was in Empire Strikes Back, too, as General Veers. And the guy who played Hitler here was Admiral Ozzel (the first one Vader chokes out for incompetence).
The blimp is called a zeppelin and other than ocean liner's were THE way to travel in luxury :(
The reason they all rushed to hand over their tickets wasnt just because Indy beat up someone and threw him off ... its WHO he did it too.
The officer was wearing the black uniform of the GeStaPo, GeheimeStaats Polizei (spelling is off but its close), or state secret police .They were the teeth and claws of the 3rd Reich's domestic policy enforcement. If your neighbor disappeared, more often then not, the Gestapo were resonsible (At least post 1933 or so) ...
So anyone willing to remove 😁 one of them from the flight wasnt someone to take lightly! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
For the record, the fourth movie is better than some people say it is. It has its flaws, but I honestly think it's better than Temple of Doom. It just isn't on the level of the first and third ones.
Elsa should have Let it Go.
This airship is like the Hindenburg. I have ridden on the Goodyear blimp. 1st and 3rd movies are best.
Definitely the best Indy film. Infact the only dud is Crystal Skull.
Blimp. Not blip. 😅
But it’s a zeppelin, anyway.
I enjoyed Crystal Skull. Especially more than Temple of Doom, because of Kate Capshaw. Give it a try, don't listen to the haters.
Can we PLEASE get a reduced explanation of “how it works”? How many people are here and DONT know to follow, subscirbe, it’s a cut down version for YT, you need an account at such n such streaming service, etc? Like.. u make the vids SO much longer for no reason😊
The 4th film is still worth a watch.
no
Well, folks, you HAVE to watch Indy 4 for 5 to make sense. Also, Crystal Skull is better than Temple of Doom.
