Little fun fact. Sean Connery played the 1st James Bond, whose gun of choice was a Walther PPK. That’s the same gun that Henry gets shot with, so Bond gets shot with his own gun.

Sean Connery and Harrison Ford is a match made in cinematic heaven.
For his whole life, Indy saw his dad choosing the grail research over him, but at the end his dad chose saving him over saving the grail, and I always thought that was a powerful moment for Indy. And a perfect way to end the trilogy.

Given that James Bond was a heavy inspiration for Indy (namely all the crazy situations they get in and out of) it just made sense. Hell, Indy was even dressed as Bond in the beginning Temple of Doom with the Tux down to the red flower.
John Rhys-Davies wasn't just the voice of Gimli. He *was* Gimli, under a lot of make-up and using the same tricks they used to shrink the Hobbits down.
He WAS Gimli and the voice of Treebeard, the Ent.

@AidanLonergan-bz1cp He played Gimli in the close-ups, at least. I'm sure the scale issue combined with the amount of make-up covering his face made it easier just to have a double for a lot of shots.
I love that the only ‘true’ cameo of Indiana Jones was at the beginning, when he was lying down on the floor… being a gooood boy! :)
to answer Future Ang's question about Indy sleeping, he usually does it in travelling. Those iconic map sequences, Indy is grabbing some shut eye during them. We saw this briefly in the first movie when on the ship, Indy falls asleep while Marion is kissing him (in fairness he had been up something like 2 days straight). We often see Indy napping whenever possible while travelling, because on the scene he might not get much of a chance.

Also it shows that he's rugged and an experienced traveller, being able to grab sleep almost anywhere.
He is also sleeping when Lao Che's flight crew bails on them in Temple of Doom.
Usually films skip over the characters sleeping, eating and going to the bathroom. It would make movies incredibly long, boring and disgusting to include those things at anywhere near full length.
To be fair, I used to wonder the same thing about Mitch Buchannon in _Baywatch Nights._

George Lucas named the character Indiana after his Alaskan Malamute. The dog Indiana would sit up in the passenger seat whenever Lucas would take him on car rides, thus also providing the inspiration for co-piolet Chewbacca. Short Round was the name of a bulldog owned by Temple of Doom screen writers Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz. While Willie was the name of Steven Spielberg's dog. Even stranger, Kate Capshaw (who played Willie) ended up marrying Spielberg seven years after they met on Temple of Doom.
The butler originally said, "If you are a Scottish lord, then I am Jesse Owens!" Referring to the Black American sprinter who defied Nazi expectations at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Test audiences didn't get the reference, though, and it was changed in post.
What isn't often reported is that Jesse Owens was enthusiastically cheered by the German crowd when he won, much to his surprise. However he was completely ignored by the US President FDR on his return from the games, he received no congratulatory telegram and was not invited to the White House and never met FDR. Unlike all the white US Olympic medalists, who were invited to meet the President. Owens always said he wasn't snubbed by Hitler, but by his own President.

River Phoenix was a good actor. He is missed.

This is my favorite Jones, even more so than Raiders. Sean Connery is brilliant init, and the chemistry between him and Ford is fantastic.
I always flip-flop between the two about which one is my favorite, but for the most part, I lean towards this film.

An underrated bit in this movie is that Indy's father is played by Sean Connery, an actor known for tough guy leading roles with decades in film, so you think "oh, that's where Indy gets it from! His dad is James Bond!"... then you meet him and he's playing against type as just a total buffoon.
I'm not sure if "buffoon" is the right word. Out of his element, for sure. But I know exactly what you mean. It's great fun to see suave, smooth, sophisticated Sean "James Bond" Connery playing an older man, a stern father figure, an academic, the antithesis of an action hero, comically out of his comfort zone. He plays it exactly right! He was a helluva good actor.

Other than Harrison Ford, there are a couple of Star Wars actors who show up in this movie, both of them play imperial officers in Empire Strikes Back. Donovan is played by Julian Glover, who portrays General Veers in Empire, he’s the AT-AT commander who destroys Echo Base’s shields generator. The other is Michael Sheard who played the ill fated Admiral Ozzel, the first guy Vader strangles to death in Empire. Here, he plays a slightly more sinister role, filling the boots of one A. Hitler. Also, there a slight goof in the scene where he gives Indy his autograph, Michael Sheard signs his name with his right hand, while Hitler was left handed.
Raiders is my favorite in terms of nostalgia & story, Temple is my favorite in terms of music & setting, and Last Crusade is just my favorite. It literally checks all of the boxes when it comes to a good movie.

working together for a greater cause.

Out of all the side characters in the franchise, Short Round is the most memorable character in the series and one of the most memorable characters in cinematic history imo, and that's why Temple of Doom is good. As a movie though, I think this one is the best one.
Fair enough, but I think Temple of Doom is memorable for a lot of reasons. The mine cart chase and the bridge sequence are absolutely iconic moments in cinema. This one has the best trap room in an Indy movie (I think). Yeah lots of things. Shorty is great though, don't get me wrong.
I still like the trilogy in the order of 1, 3, 2. But that is more about the other two being so great, not about Temple of Doom being bad.

On a related note, if you are interested in more John Rhys-Davies (Sallah, Gimli), I highly recommend the 1980 TV miniseries SHOGUN, where he turned in an awesome performance as Portuguese ship pilot Vasco Rodrigues.
The remake of shogun is out now as well, so far it's been great

- Young Indy was played by the late River Phoenix, older brother of Joaquin Phoenix. River played Harrison's son in the film The Mosquito Coast.
- Dr. Elsa Schneider was played by actress Alison Doody, who has not made many movies. Her first was a James Bond film (A View to a Kill, 1984). Her most recent was the worldwide Indian hit, RRR, and she plays a villainess in that movie. You should see it if you haven't.
- Sean Connery was is only 10 years older than Harrison Ford, and this film created a friendship between the two that lasted until Sir Sean's passing in 2020. The reason he was cast was quite simple. One of the primary influences of Indiana Jones was the British super spy James Bond. Steven Spielberg had a dream of directing a Bond film, and kept getting rejected. So, George told Steven about this character while on vacation during the opening weekend of Star Wars in 1977. George said that Indiana Jones could be Steven's James Bond. So...when it came time to cast Dr. Henry Jones, Sr. Spielberg had a list one one name...the original James Bond 007, Sean Connery. Connery played 007 in a total of 6 official Bond films, and one unofficial film, playing the role from 1962-1967, returning in 1971, and ending ever playing the role in 1983...unless you count The Rock, which there is a whole fan theory that Connery's character is actually James Bond with a different name. I actually subscribe to the theory...but that's me.
- Walter Donovan was played by Julian Glover, who did another little film for George Lucas called The Empire Strikes Back. He played General Veers, the commander of the AT-AT attack on Hoth. He also played Grand Maester Pycelle in Game of Thrones, if you watched that show.

Anytime somebody tries to mock you about which came first, all you have to do is go "Allan Quatermain, ha! Checkmate!" There was also a real-life archaeologist who is widely regarded as the real-life Indy.
I remember going to the midnight screening of this movie when it came out with the entire family. Everyone absolutely loved it. They were selling posters for the movie in the lobby and my parents bought one for me. I had it in my room for years.

The super cool outside of the temple at the end is a real place, Petra in Jordan! (Sadly it is the front for only a small interior chamber, not a huge secret maze.)
The film opens with the young Indy as a Boy Scouts near the turn of the century.
A cool fact about Stephen Spielberg: he was an Eagle Scout and in 1989, I attended the national scout jamboree (basically, a big get-together of scouts from across the country) and saw him unveil the new Cinematography merit badge. I think it is so cool that he gave back to the scouting organization despite his busy schedule.
Last time I saw this movie was with my grandparents, and there's a slight detail I can no longer unsee. My grandad pointed out that if you pay attention to Henry Jones sr after the tank goes over the cliff, you can see his beard shortens after Indy climbs back up. Did Sean Connery shave in between shots?
The used for the location of the grail is actually in the remains of Petra, in Jordan. The canyon is seen again in Stephen Sommers’ 2001 The Mummy Returns, and another part of the Petra complex houses the ‘Tomb of the Primes’ in Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen.

Also Ange, people are going say not to watch any of the Indiana Jones ones after this, but they're not BAD movies per-se, they aren't as good as Raiders or Crusade, but they are absolutely worth watching and reacting to.
In case no one else mentions it, a handful of actors in this film also just happen to be in James Bond films. The most obvious being Sean Connery, Henry Jones Sr., also being James Bond himself. Then Elsa's actress (Alison Doody) playing Jenny Flex in A View to a Kill in 1985, Walter Donovan's actor (Julian Glover) playing Kristatos in For Your Eyes Only in 1981, and one I tend to forget is Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) is General Pushkin in The Living Daylights in 1987. The Last Crusade started off as my favorite Indiana Jones film, but the more time has passed, the more Raiders of the Lost Ark kind of took over for me but it's a close battle, and Temple of Doom is still great even if I don't reach for that as much as the other two.
A fun fact, it´s when young Indy uses the whip and gets a scar himself in the chin. Harrison Ford, in real life, has a scar in the same place, but in his case was due to a car crash when he was young. Another fun fact it´s that Sean Connery and Harrison Ford (who played the roles as father and son), have only twelve years of difference between them. Sean had 59 here and Harrison 47 (but Sean looks more older than him).
John Rhys-Davies didn’t just play Gimli in LotR he also was the voice of Treebeard.

The Indiana Jones trilogy holds a special place in my heart, the whole series actually stops my father from drinking. So when there's a marathon on TV he doesn't pick up a beer bottle, even after his death I still watch knowing this sobered up my father even for a while.
And this was the perfect end to the Indiana Jones story. Of course no other movies exist! Why would you even think such things?

It is scientifically accurate that if you have a liquid which is burning at the surface where it meets with the air, separated at that surface level from a section of the liquid which is not burning, the fire will not spread across the boundary. However, there is fire inside the casket in the shot of the interior, so they should be burning to death in that bad boy, at least until all the oxygen gets used up. And then they have a different problem.
One of the things you might not pick up on with Elsa is that she doesn't tell anyone that Indy and his dad have escaped until official word reaches Berlin from the castle. She keeps her meeting with Indy in Berlin to herself. She is ambitious, self-serving and greedy. She is also in service to the Nazis, but I really think that one's a bridge too far for her.
You might be the first "Indiana Jones" newbie I've ever witnessed, who isn't absolutely astounded by learning that Sean Connery plays Indy's father. 😮😮😮
* Indy's schooling is interesting. In "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", he mentions that he's a "tenured" professor. However, if you watch *The* *Adventures* *of* *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* and the 2nd half of the episode: *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Curse* *of* *the* *Jackal* 1916, *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Mystery* *of* *the* *Blues* 1920, and read the novels *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Peril* *at* *Delphi* 1920-1922, and the novel *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Dance* *of* *the* *Giants* 1925, you discover that Indy dropped out of high school in March of 1916(during Spring Break).
* Then in February to April of 1917 is the episode *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Attack* *of* *the* *Hawkmen,* and in September of 1918 is the episode *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Masks* *of* *Evil.* Indy was then transferred from "Belgian Army Intelligence", to the "American Expeditionary Force"(A.E.F.) of the "U.S. Army Air Service"(U.S.A.A.S.), and flew a "Martin MB-1 Bomber" with "Jock Lindsey" in the "Meuse-Argonne Offensive" of WWI. Immediately after that, is the episode *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Treasure* *of* *the* *Peacock's* *Eye* which is the same diamond that Lao Che was gonna give to Indy(in "Temple of Doom"), but then it was lost(however, Short Round tracked it to Hawaii in 1957, and informed Indy of this).
* Indy then moves back to Princeton, NJ and begins working on his G.E.D. After this, in May of 1919, the episode called *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Winds* *of* *Change* takes place. He finishes the work on his G.E.D., a little late, and then applied at the "University of Chicago". Despite the fact that it was past the deadline, his father manages to pull some strings for him so that he could begin taking a major in "Linguistics", but he had some catching up to do for starting late. Also as a result, he was gonna have to wait until May of the following year to receive his GED along with the college graduates. Shortly after this, he moved to Chicago. For one of his elective classes, he takes "Archaeology 101".
* This is where he meets Abner "Fedora Garth" Ravenwood, the professor of the class. He recognized him as the man who gave him his first fedora in the desert of Utah in 1912. They become fast friends, and he meets Abner's 15 year old daughter "Marion"(Indy is 20 years old at this time). In January of 1920, he applied at the "Sorbonne University" in Paris, France(and he spent a lot of time in France during WWI). This is where the episode "Young Indiana Jones and the Mystery of the Blues" takes place. Then, the prologue of the novel "Indiana Jones and the Peril at Delphi" takes place.
* He is then accepted by Sorbonne University, and moves to Paris in June of 1920, but while en route, the episodes: *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Scandal* *of* *1920* and *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Hollywood* *Follies* takes place. His credits from the University of Chicago transfer over to the Sorbonne University. This is where he meets fellow student "Rene Belloq". They compete with each other, often in the form of classroom debates and love interests. He finishes his basic studies in May of 1921. Then the rest of the novel "Indiana Jones and the Peril at Delphi" takes place.
* Then, the prologue of the novel *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Unicorn's* *Legacy* takes place(I think). He then receives his Bachelor's Degree in "Archaeology" in May of 1923, and he receives his Master's Degree in "Archaeology" in May of 1924. In 1925 Indy completes his thesis. Only to have it stolen from him by, none other than, Belloq. Indy knew that Belloq stole his thesis, but unfortunately there was no way to prove it. So he quickly began to work on another thesis, and it turned out to be even better than his first one, putting Belloq to shame. He receives his Ph.D. in "Archaeology" in May of 1925.
* Then, in August of 1925, fellow archaeologist, and friend of the family, "Marcus Brody", helps Indy land his first teaching job in London, where he falls in love with a Scottish grad-student of his named "Deirdre Campbell", and eventually ends up marrying her. It is heavily implied that one of Indy's very first students, was "Wu Han"(as seen at the beginning of "Temple of Doom"). He mentions in the film that he had followed Indy on many adventures. Yet he is never mentioned, and never appears in any of Indy's adventures. Strange.
* Also, this is around the time when archaeologists "Ernest Forrestal" and "Rene Belloq" prove to be his 2 top competitors. However, Indy was more of an "Antiquarian" than an archaeologist. Also, *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Raiders* *of* *the* *Lost* *Ark* wasn't the first, or last, time Indy was hired by U.S. Army Intelligence. Those two reasons are why Indy had so many adventures. While other "archaeologist" had "0" adventures. Aaahhh, now it makes sense. O.k., now I get it. I love how someone did a montage video of Indy cracking his whip, to the song called *Whip* *It* by "Devo". That's cool.

@@WesMordine * No problem. You're probably wondering how Indy got a Master's Degree in only 1 year, and then a Ph.D. only 1 year after that. I don't think anyone knows the answer to that. Who knows, maybe his dad and Professor Ravenwood pulled some strings for him. I don't know. Also, maybe archaeology was such a new subject of study, that it didn't take as long to get a Master's or a Doctorate in it as it did other fields of study in the 1920's. When Indy moved to Paris, he maintained a long distance relationship with Marion.
* Abner forbid Marion to go with him. She tried to elope with Indy before he left, but Indy told her that he needed to focus on his studies. That he would always write, and he would come back for her after he received his doctorate. When he fell in love with "Deirdre", he sent Marion a "Dear Jane" letter, and Marion felt that it was the ultimate betrayal. This made Marion hate him until he rescued her from "The Raven" bar in Nepal, 1936. It's also what caused Indy and Abner to have a "falling out". Abner wasn't dead though.
* Indy did see Abner again in the *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Further* *Adventures* Marvel comic book issues #17 *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Grecian* *Earn* and #18 *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *City* *of* *Yesterday's* *Forever* which actually turned out to be pretty far away from where "The Raven" bar used to be in "Lalitpur"(Patan), Nepal. Abner moved to Lalitpur(with Marion in tow) because he had been in correspondence with another archaeologist who lived in a house that Abner later converted into "The Raven" bar when he moved into the abandoned house.
* The archaeologist, that had been in contact with Abner, claimed he got a hot lead that gave the exact location of the legendary paradise of "Shangri-La", and that it has an actual village(or city) named "Ra-Lundi" where they worshipped a god called "F'han-Tal". All he told Abner was that it was along the Kunlun Mountains farthest to the west in Tibet. It was the last thing Abner had said to Indy in a letter(that Indy kept) before their falling out in 1925. Abner first went to the archaeologist's house near Lalitpur, and began to study any notes the archaeologist left behind. Meanwhile, he got to work using his own money to transform the house into a bar as a means of revenue for food and supplies.
* Abner put together a team, and hired 3 or 4 teamsters with horses and wagons, and took an actual road that was there from Lalitpur, north-east to another road and turned west, following it all the way to the western Kunlun Mountains. Which may have taken weeks just to reach the mountains themselves. Never mind all the effort it was gonna take to get to the westside of the Kunlun Mountain that is farthest to the west, and then begin climbing it in search of a "hidden" paradise. The thought had probably even already crossed Marions mind that she may very well never see her father ever again......but she did.
This one is probably my favorite, in no small part because it was the first Indiana Jones movie I saw. I also saw it a lot when it would pop up airing on TV, and my dad and I would end up watching the rest of it from whatever point it was at. My dad also quotes "We named the dog Indiana!" randomly sometimes, which just adds to my fondness for this film.

This year for Christmas I got my brother a replica of the grail diary and a movie accurate Grail. This is also my favorite one, this was the perfect ending to a perfect trilogy watching them ride off the sunset was as good as it gets. Also We named the dog Indiana makes me want to name one of my dogs Indiana
Second best one after Raiders of the Lost Ark IMO. Sean Connery and the actor that plays Marcus Brody brings a great sense of comic relief to the movie. So good.

The big burly Henchmen who indy had a fistfight with in each of these 3 movies, were all played by the same person, an English wrestler by the name of Pat Roach. He passed away in 2004.

'Last Crusade' is my favourite, I saw 'Temple of Doom' in the cinema when it first came out. I didn't see 'Raiders' until it was on TV not long before 'Last Crusade' was in cinemas.
Saw them all in the theaters when they first came out and loved them all, but Temple of Doom is my favorite, it was so much fun and such a wild ride, and yes, Short-Round rules!
Speilberg has always wanted to a Bond movie. When he couldn't get one, George Lucas came to him with the script for Raiders and said, "I've got something better." So when they did this movie, they had to get the "first" Bond to play Papa Jones.
It's even more interesting when you dive deep into who's books they were burning.

So according to the trivia on IMDb the guy who gave him the hat was supposed to be Abner Ravenwood - Marion's father and Indy's mentor and friend but for some reason they didn't credit it. Please watch the other two. No, they're not as good in my opinion but I enjoyed them anyway and I honestly think you would, too.

I saw this indy movie in the theater with my brothers when I was around 12. We had a lot of fun.
There was a point where this and the first one were tied for my favorite, but as I have gotten older, nostalgia has kicked in and secured Raiders of the Lost Arc as the top movie of the franchise for me.
