My absolute favorite part in this movie is when Henry is trying to convince Indy to let the Grail go. Henry spent his life looking for the Grail, but chose his son in the end. Henry calling him Indiana instead of Junior to try to get through to him was brilliant.

The tank chase was filmed at a dry riverbed in Almeria in southern Spain! That tank was built in four months and then flown to Almeria aboard a British Short Belfast plane, of which only ten were ever constructed for the Royal Air Force. To transport the monster tank from location to location, it was placed on the back of a low loader truck. "Shooting went smoothly and the tank only let us down twice. The first time was because the rotor arm in the distributor broke and it took us a day to get a new one from Madrid. The second time, it was so hot that the solder in the oil coolers actually melted and flowed around with the oil into the valves, shattering two of them to pieces. So we had to change one of the engines and that also took one day. I think everyone expected to lose a lot more time, but the tank worked really well", said special effects artist George Gibbs.
Driving the tank was effects technician Brian Lince, who had to weather the extreme heat and the torturous terrain. "Brian did an excellent job. Being in that tank was like being in an oven, and he was in there every day for nearly eight weeks. We had ten industrial electric fans inside to try and keep Brian cool, the engine cool and the hydraulic oil cool. Not only was it hot in there, but since the tank had no suspension, Brian got rattled around so much that when he came out and tried to take a cup of tea, he would spill it before he could get it to his lips."

While Raiders is shot better, i completely disagree about the writing. Last Crusade is one of the best scripts i’ve seen from a Spielberg movie. Raiders was a movie about an archaeologist just trying to find the Ark while neglecting the emotional core of the movie. The love between Indi and Marion was lackluster. Whereas with Last Crusade, the funny banter and emotional depth between Indi and his father is on a whole other level, not to mention Sallah and Marcus as well. Additionally, Ilsa, a nazi sympathizer, who managed to be written as a sympathetic character even though she’s working with nazis. The flow and pace of the movie just works so much better and it’s prologue of Young Indiana shows what drives Indiana to be who he is. And the ending where they ride into the sunset is one of the greatest and satisfying endings in movie history, at least, i’ve ever seen. Raiders is of course iconic for a reason. But last crusade is by most aspects the better movie

The guy who plays Donovan, Julian Glover, was also the main villain, Aristotle Kristatos, in the Bond film "For Your Eyes Only". That also came out in 1981(the same year as "Raiders of the Lost Ark"), and it also featured Charles Dance(Tywin Lannister) as one of his henchmen.

No.1 film of 1989, Oscar winner for sound editing and for the planned trilogy, it was a great ending.
Ford & Connery, although they were playing Sr. and Jr., they were actually 12 years apart in age.
I loved it for being more than just an adventure story.
At it's core, a story of father and son rebuilding their relationship and working together for a greater cause.
Loved the opening scene with Young Indy, played by the late River Phoenix.
Loved it even more when they announced "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" for ABC, 2 seasons (28 episodes/4 TV movies).
It was on paramount plus, but it was removed (tragic).

The music playing in the scene where Indiana meets Adolf Hitler is adapted from the "Königgrätzer Marsch" by Johann Gottfried Piefke (1815-1884), combined with another song, "Hohen Friedsberg." In Battle of the Bulge (1965), this song is sung in English. The villain in that film was a Nazi played by Robert Shaw, who would later star in Spielberg's first blockbuster, Jaws (1975).

"I'm gonna eagle the scout of those motherF'ers" 💀made me lose it! The snakes in the train car were a mix of props and common garter snakes or Thamnophis sirtalis! They have a wide range in North America from Northwest Territories of Canada to South Florida. But the ones seen in the movie are specifically red-sided garter snake which is a subspecies! For humans, they are not toxic but may cause slight itching, burning, and/or swelling. So while we're introduced to why Indy is afraid of snakes and how a whip became his signature weapon, the circus train scene also shows the reason he has a scar on his chin, from accidentally cutting it during the lion encounter!
The march played during the book burning scene is Königgrätzer Marsch which was composed in 1866 in commemoration of the Battle of Königgrätz, the decisive battle of the Austro-Prussian War! And the uniforms the Nazis wear during the book-burning...are legitimate! Anthony Powell, who was a costume designer on the film, managed to get his hands on a trove of genuine Nazi uniforms.

And then something happen to Indy's mom and Henry threw himself into the grail search. But you can clearly see that he loves Indy because it's really Henry who choose Indy over the grail and not Indy who chooses his dad over the grail. And fun fact: Connery is only 12 years older than Ford.

I think a lot of people believe Raiders is the better movie overall, but the most enjoyable one is The Last Crusade. One of the things to keep in mind is that one of the reasons The Last Crusade is so good is because we already had character development on Indy from the previous movies. Without that, the movie wouldn't have been able to focus on other characters as much as it did.
If only more sequels actually utilized previous iterations as well as this movie did.
One touch I particularly like is when they are riding off into the sunset you actually get to see them try to help Marcus stay on the horse, many movies would have abandoned that in service of a more "perfect" shot... But the way they did it makes that final shot of them riding away all the more believable and earned.

11:52 - According to Grail Lore, it's the same cup. The cup Joseph of Arimathea used to collect Christ's blood at the Crucifixion was also the cup Jesus passed around at the Last Supper. Grail Lore is WEIRD.
I believe the grave robber leader was meant to Abner Ravenwood, Marion's father. I think that was in an early draft of the script but I don't know if it was finalized. I like to think it's true, though.
I'll always remember Julian Glover from Empire Strikes Back, as the only Imperial Officer Lord Vader DIDN'T Force-Choke at some point.
The guy who played Hitler is Michael Sheard, who played Hitler in various TV shows and movies more times than can comfortably be mentioned. And coincidentally, the FIRST Imperial Officer to be Force-Choked completely to death by Lord Vader in Empire Strikes Back.

We saw it both during the day and at night with tons of candles! We quoted Last Crusade the entire week we spent visiting Petra! It’s out in the desert and nothing is more beautiful than seeing the desert at night. I highly recommend visiting Jordan. There are so many beautiful sights to see there!

The Nazi butler originally said "If you are a Scottish lord, than I am Jesse Owens!" in reference to the Black American athlete who crushed Nazi dreams of Aryan supremacy at the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics. It got changed after test audiences didn't get the reference.
The German planes chasing Indy and Henry from the zeppelin are Pilatus P.2 training aircraft from Switzerland. They were based on German designs and have been used as a stand-in for Messerschmidt Bf109 fighters in movies since the 1960s.
The tank is based on the Mk.VIII "International" Landship designed by the UK and was produced from 1918-1920 by Bovington, Ford, Renault, and planned to be built by FIAT before WWI ended.

Missed opportunity not making the guy (fake IJ) at the beginning IJ's mentor Abner Ravenwood. Originally that was supposed to be the case but they removed that from the script. Same concept though since he gives him the hat that he wears as an older man. Just coulda had deeper meaning if the guy was actually recognized as Ravenwood in the finished movie.

    • @wyomingsioux
      @wyomingsioux Рік тому

Certainly not. At least, not without supernatural intervention. The Crusaders came from all over Europe and spoke a diverse range of languages. But between the the 11th to 13th centuries, none of the European languages as we know them today existed. Many of the knights, who were upper class, would probably have spoken the lingua franca of the Church, which was Latin. And if they used a vernacular tongue, an antiquated form of French, with Norman (Scandinavian) influences, would probably have been one of the more prevalent languages used. Over time, the dialects used in the Holy Land would have picked up Arabic and Mediterranean influences as well.
Similarly, the languages spoken by English nobility during that timeframe would be unintelligible to modern English speakers, given that they were likely Latin and Anglo Norman (a mix of Norse and old French). “Old English”- i.e. the tongue of Beowulf- would no longer have been in use by the 11th century and even if it were, it is in no way understandable to modern English-speakers, given that it had a lot of ancient Germanic vocabulary (which I’m not sure modern Germans would understand either).
To further reinforce this point, consider that even Richard I (the Lion Heart), the King of England during the Third Crusade, was known to primarily speak or write in Limousin (an ancient Romance language) and French and likely had limited command of that era’s form of English (which was spoken by the lower class).
Early Modern English- the language used by Shakespeare- did not exist until around 1500. So no, there is no natural way that Indiana Jones and the knight would have understood each other. Just attribute it to the magic of the Grail chamber that individuals centuries apart can communicate.

So I rewatched this for first time in ages and, wow, what fun! More than that, I think Spielberg is clearly just in top form as a director and storyteller. Simple shit like Indy knowing his dad's room because it's wired, pointing up, and the camera tilting up as he does so to reveal that it's indeed wired is simple shit that lesser directors can overlook that tells the story visually. There's a oner with some cool blocking that isn't some crazy set piece. It's just Indy going from his room to Elsa's, but the way it's laid out is done all in service of story and character. Great shit.
More importantly, I watched this trilogy last weekend with my 11yo nephew and he absolutely loved all three. His reaction when the faces melted in Raiders: 😮. Temple was his favorite because "it was funny" thanks to Short Round and Winnie running around that camp scene ("too much blood" though). This one he said was just really fun. He wants to watch crystal skull, so I'll probably have to do that one too. With him, it won't be so bad.

This is the ultimate father and son story. Indy teams up with his dad to fight the Nazis for the Holy Grail.
RIP Sean Connery and River Phoenix.
Originally Sir Laurence Olivier was considered to play the role of Henry Jones, Sr, but fell ill with Pneumonia and had to drop out. Gregory Peck (To Kill A Mockingbird, The Guns Of Navarone, Cape Fear, The Omen) was considered until Sean Connery was cast. Olivier died in July 1989, two months after the film's release.
The original opening scene was going to have Indy battling ghosts in a haunted Scottish mansion but this was deemed too similar to Steven Spielberg's Poltergeist.
The second draft of the script was going to have Indy battling the Monkey King over the mythical Foundation Of Youth.
It was settled on Indy teaming up with his father for one crazy adventure.
The film was a box office and critical success, making $474 million dollars against a $50 million dollar budget.
It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing.

I wonder why Indy can’t do a Scottish accent considering who his dad is.

The next one, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is a real love hate. If you can handle some bad CGI and disappointing chase, it’s actually worth a watch for characters alone.

I consider myself in the minority of Crystal Skull not being as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
People were quick to shit all over the fridge withstanding a nuclear blast. Y'all, they opened a Jesus Box, saw a dude get his heart ripped out of his chest and set on fire and Indy squares up with an 800 year old knight. FOH with your fridge takes. Turn the brain off and enjoy the show.

I still find the lack of practical effects and their lack of good instincts in some of those sequences from the Jungle Mulcher and vine swinging on it just compounds on itself it a big bad way.

i was born in 1950 guys, I saw every classic movie there was. We didn't need stupid CGI's the real stuff with real stunt doubles and effects was used and that's why today's movies are so pitiful ...

This is my least favorite of the original trilogy. The comedy was too silly, if they backed off on that a little bit, it woulda been better in my opinion. Temple of Doom had same issue but the dark atmosphere made it more interesting to me than Last Crusade.

You guys should go watch Dial of Destiny. Watched it with friends, we all liked it. It's up there with the original 3 movies and it has a very sweet end for Indy and his friends.
Yes It starts with a long Flashback to WW2 with a DeAged Ford but it's the best DeAge I have seen so far and it's an awesome start to the film. I get why they decided to do so much deAge in the start. They want us to watch Indy in his prime punching Nazis and setting up the plot for the entire movie because Dial is very much about adressing Indy at the end of his career so first we get a reminded of how he was back in the day :) Don't believe the haters!
Oh! And if you watch Dial of Destiny you will be able to enjoy Sallah Singing his favorite songs to his grandchildren, not once but twice! :D
Ps. Elsa! Let it go!!! Let it Go!!!! :D
