That's the late River Phoenix as young Indiana Jones. Hands down my favorite Indy flick, time for some trivia. The dog at the Jones’ house is a reference to George Lucas’ Alaskan Malamute, Indiana. In his original script for Raiders, he named the lead character Indiana Smith after his dog. Steven Spielberg asked him to change the name to Jones. The dog would sit in the passenger seat of his pick up truck and was the inspiration for another furry co-pilot, Chewbacca. Harrison Ford has a noticeable scar on his chin, he got it in a car accident as a younger man. In order to explain where he got it, the scene with the lion has River Phoenix getting the same scar due to his inexperience with the whip. The actor playing Hitler signs his name with his right hand, Hitler was actually left handed. Donovan shoots Henry Sr with a German pistol that had, at the time the movie had been set, only just been introduced to the German army, the Walther PPK. It would later go on to be the signature firearm of a certain British spy, James Bond, first played by Sean Connery himself. The original James Bond, shot with James Bond’s own gun.

Great reaction Addie. Glad you caught the lessons that they learned especially his father. "That what truly matter in life his bond and love of his son. Not some relic." "Indiana. Let it go" His father knew that using his name he chose and hearing his father letting go of his obsession rang in his mind. Indiana realized his dad truly did love his mother and him. So, Illumination was a great word to use. This was such an amazing movie. This was my dad's favorite movies and I watched this with him, so I love watching since now he has passed, and I miss him.
This movie is everybody's favorite because of Sean Connery. Indy has interesting, complicated relationships in all the films, but this time it was SEAN CONNERY. For example, I loved "The Highlander" -- the story, the characters, especially the Highlands of Scotland. However, the sequel was crap, 109 minutes of torture. Around the middle of that film, Sean Connery shows up for about 10 minutes. Those 10 minutes were gold. Sean Connery is magic. He saves a bad movie (10 minutes, anyway), and makes a good movie great.
casting Sean Connery was the best thing they did for this one. The story was good, but I think that Sean Connery was the key puzzle piece to make this the best Indiana Jones movie.
Hey Addie, Fun Fact for you: When he was offered the role of Dr. Henry Jones, Sean Connery initially turned it down citing the fact that there was a 12 year difference between himself and Harrison Ford
Here's two Sean Connery movies for you to react to The Rock(1996) it's directed by Michael Bay. It's an action movie that takes place in San Francisco & Alcatraz Island. It also stars Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, Tony Todd, & Michael Beihn. The Hunt For Red October (1990) it's directed by John Mcteirnan. It's based on the Jack Ryan novel of the same name. It takes place on a Russian submarine called The Red October. It also stars Alec Baldwin, Sam Neill, Tim Curry, & James Earl Jones.
i've never worn heels but imagine walking in the sewers under the library in them around the rocks and whatever was on the bottom of the water / oil... seems like it would suck
Great job Addie. This was my favorite of the 3 as well. If you want another Grail movie I highly recommend Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Keep up the great work.
Not to detract from this film (my favorite of the franchise so far, and a great reaction too), but if you liked Sean Connery in this then you might also like Highlander. He's not the lead role, but still an impressive and entertaining performance.
The Malamute we see at the start of the film is the one Indy is named after & is a nod to George Lucas’s own dog. During the time when Lucas was writing Star Wars, his own Malamute would sit next to him in the front seat of his car whenever they went out for a drive. This hairy co-pilot Lucas had, gave him the inspiration for Chewbacca!! The boat chase, wasn’t actually filmed in Venice. It was shot at Tilbury Docks near London; virtually all the studio shooting for this film….as with the previous two films was carried out at Pinewood Studios.
Addie, in The Empire Strikes Back, Donovan (Julian Glover) was General Veers, who led the Empire’s troops in the snow battle, while Hitler (Michael Sheard) was Admiral Ozzel, the first officer Darth Vader chokes. They even share a scene together.
Excellent reaction! I love watching your responses to movies. So much fun! Raiders is amazing and really brought back the genre of pulp adventures and gave them new life. Last Crusade is equally amazing, even though it is very different from the original as it is much more of a character-driven adventure movie than the celebration of pulp adventure flicks. And JRD as Sallah in each of them makes the movie that much better.
My favorite. I’ve always been a big fan of both Harrison Ford and Sean Connery. Although they played father and son, they’re only 12 years apart in age.
Wonderfully shot and scored, great character chemistry, beautiful locations, a pair of great villains, and a stunningly gorgeous Alison Doody on top. This is the quintessential action-adventure movie, period.
Fun one, Addie! 😃 Yeah, this is my favorite Indiana Jones movie too. Love all the Dad & Junior vibes, LOL! Pairing Harrison Ford & Sean Connery was a stroke of genius.
A couple of fun facts about River Phoenix playing Young Indiana. One, Harrison Ford suggested River for the part because he enjoyed working with River on the film "Mosquito Coast" and thought River represented him best as a teenager. Also when it came to approaching to playing a Young Indiana, River described it as he wasn't trying to mimic Harrison Ford the grown man he is, but do it in a way that he would've done it as a teenager.
The trick with the "leap of faith" is what is called a "forced perspective". The footbridge is real but it has been painted to blend in perfectly with the surrounding canyon
I dunno. With all the negativity about number 4 Spielberg might not lean so much on nostalgia and tell a compelling story this time. Just trying to look on the bright side though...
@@EvelyntMild Gotta agree with the chance here, they need to do the 'autopsy report' on the last movie and see where it went wrong, or, they don't care and use the name as a cash-grab. If they release a teaser, i'll look at that, if they release a trailer, i'll pass because trailers always spoil the movie.
@@EvelyntMild I regret to inform that Spielberg is not directing the last movie. Instead it is being directed by James Mangold who did "Logan" among others. Also it is the first movie to not be written by George Lucas in the series which is a shame as Lucas proved to be more imaginative writer than Disney's hired guns in regards to Star Wars, even if he may not have been the best director with prequels. I kinda wanted to see what he would write for the last Indiana Jones film.
If you've been following what has been going on all around number 5 and what the storyline is supposed to be... you would not be curious, you would be disgusted. The short and sweet...Indy is not the hero in this one, he is going to be constantly saved by a woman, who is planned to be the new Indiana Jones in future movies! Indy is made out to be a bumbling low IQ idiot....and that's before they kill him off!
Great reaction, Addie. I totally agree with you that this movie is by far the best of the series. If you want more Sean Connery movies, then I would recommend all of his James Bond 007 films as well as The Untouchables (1987), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Rising Sun (1993), DragonHeart (1996), and The Rock (1996).
Yes, this is the best Indiana Jones film by a country mile! Dr Jones Senior and Junior just have the BEST dynamic, it's heart warming, adventurous, action packed and with some great one liners thrown in, it's one of those films I honestly don't know how it could be improved. Also Marcus Brody having some of the best comedic relief after being the mentor character in Raiders of the Lost Arc. "Henry, Henry! Don't you see: the Pen is mightier than the sword!"
You might want to check out the YT clips of Spielberg and Ford honoring Connery at his AFI Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony. Pierce Brosnan's speech honoring Connery at the same ceremony is well regarded. As for the name Indiana Jones, Lucas got the inspiration from the movie Nevada Smith. Lucas changed the name to Indiana Smith (Indiana was the name of Lucas' dog). It was later changed to Jones.
Just a little bit of trivia but the guy who gives Indy the hat was written in the script as Abner Ravenwood, the father of Marion Ravenwood from Raiders. He was Indys mentor after all lol I love that fact
One thing I like in this movie is that only those who were looking for the Grail for good reasons survived : Donovan wanted the Grail to become immortal, he died. Elza wanted the Grail for the glory of being the one who found it, she died Henry was more interested in the quest for the Grail than in the Grail itself, he lives Indy wanted the Grail to save his father, he lives

Man, River Phoenix as young Indiana couldn’t have been better cast. He even had his run down, kinda crazy legs down hill. We’d hoped it would be the beginning of a young Indiana telling his back story in full. He was such a good actor but sadly passed away young.
Addie George Lucas had a dog named "Indiana". He loved his dog, so when creating the character, Indiana Jones. Lucas added that line, "I love my dog" by Jones for this movie.
Supposedly, a previous draft of the script made it clear that the archaeologist/adventurer that gives Indy his hat in the flashback scene where he's played by River Phoenix is Abner Ravenwood, Marion's dad, and that's how he and Indy first met before he became his mentor when he studied archaeology. I suppose the filmed version doesn't intend that to be the case since he seems to be more of a mercenary type, but I never could stop seeing that guy as Abner from the moment I found out about that.
Bird strikes are a big problem for aeroplanes. Bird strikes caused both engines to fail during takeoff on an Airbus A320 commercial jet in New York and the result was 'The Miracle on the Hudson'. That event was a little after the time of Dr Henry Jones, Sr using them to bring down a P-2 in Indy 3 though.
21:54. This scene was filmed in the Taberna's desert, in Almería (Spain). At that time, the temperature was very high and Sean Connery decided to shoot that shot...without pants!! Greetings from Colombia, beautiful girl!
In a panel with Karen Allen, Kate Capshaw, and Allison Doody(Marion, Willie, and Elsa), Alison admitted that she was jealous of Sean Connery. His character had the relationship with Indy that she wanted in a different form. Also, when young Indy cuts his chin with the whip, if you look carefully, you will notice a scar on Harrison Ford's chin in the exact same spot. He got that when he was younger.
Random fact, the man who plays Walter Donovan, the bad guy. He also played General Veers, the Commander of the Imperial attack force on Hoth in the Empire Strikes Back.
Welcome to the world of the movies Hollywood USED to be able to make. When this one came out in theaters EVERYONE went to see it at least once..! So glad you enjoyed it..!
If anyone wants to see more of River Phoenix, he was in a movie called "Sneakers". It wasn't a block buster, but a decent techno spy action film with many good actors. It would make a pretty good movie to react to
The scene where Indy fell over the cliff and lost is hat, a cast member there it back to him , that was not supposed to happen. But they kept it the movie. Because of jones reaction
This Indiana Jones is absolutely my favorite! Everyone (including Harrison Ford himself) seems to like Raiders of the lost ark better, but this one with the quick quips and the late Sean Connery together is just great. Also one definitely unpopular opinion of mine is that the 4th Indiana Jones is worth watching. Maybe not as good as the first ones, but still entertaining and humorous.
Still one of the most enjoyable and entertaining movies of the series and Sean Connery raises the movie to a different level with his performance. Enjoyed the watch along Addie.
The fourth one is different. Unlike others, I think it is still quite watchable and it contains some good scenes, but it is not the same as the original trilogy. This one is my preferred one though, third time worked really well here and Sean Connery is my favourite actor.
I think there were several reasons. The original cinematographer of the original trilogy died a while ago. Spielberg used his cinematographer that he has used since Schindler's List. There was also the writer's strike. George Lucas, Spielberg and David Koepp just had a tough time coming up with the story and writing the screenplay.
I enjoy the 4th and think it was criticized unfairly in part. Writing wise it has some ridiculous suspension of disbelief moments but no more that hijinks like falling out of a plane, surviving a shipwreck, and Indy's other feats. I quite like the stylistic choice of the setting. The 1930's was Nazis and mystical artifacts. The 1950's was scifi themed and had Soviets. I think it's actually a good movie, and at times better than the 2nd. But it does suffer from some bad CGI vs the practical effects of the old movies.
This is kind of the perfect sequel. Almost everything about it is "the first film, but better," something a lot of sequels try and fail at. A lot of the story beats are the same: Indy on an adventure at the beginning, then back to teaching class before getting sucked into another adventure, and even the treasures that drive the plot are similar, the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail, both important in Christian mythology. Even Nazis again as the bad guys. But it's what the film adds to the formula that really helps, in first exploring Indy's young days, then his strained and estranged relationship with his father, and how the adventure helps them heal and come to like and respect each other again. Gotta say though, kinda surprised you missed when Henry Sr. says he knew Elsa was a Nazi "because she talks in her sleep."
Definitely the best one. The chemistry Harrison and Sean have is amazing. One of the best father/son duo's we've seen in a movie.
KInd of amazing, since they had two of the biggest egos in Hollywood, in their day.

Great reaction video. And have to say, you handled the snake scenes much better than I thought you would. Kudos to you!
Here's two Sean Connery movies for you to react to
The Rock(1996) it's directed by Michael Bay.
I second Red October heartily. Haven't gotten around to The Rock.
i've never worn heels but imagine walking in the sewers under the library in them around the rocks and whatever was on the bottom of the water / oil... seems like it would suck
Didn't know about Michael Sheard, but was about to bring up the Julian Glover connection.
16:33 The slow realization. Great reaction!
Indeed. She missed or didn't catch the significance of, "She talks in her sleep.", in an earlier scene.
Fun Fact: The motorcycle chase was shot in pickup shots *after* Connery shaved his mustache and beard, so he had to wear a fake one.
The Last Crusade is my all time favourite for sure - though I am curious on how Indiana Jones 5 will go...
I am not. It is number 5. And we all know how 4 turned out. And the state of Hollywood these days gives me even less hope it could be good.
In the end, Elsa just couldnt "let it go"
Great reaction, Addie.
I like how the 4th test was the defeat of the Crusader in duel and the 5th one was the selection of the right Grail.
Another fun fact: Indiana was the name of George Lucas dog in real life who was also the inspiration for Chewbacca.
One fun fact is that Sean Connery is only 12 years older than Harrison Ford.
One thing I like in this movie is that only those who were looking for the Grail for good reasons survived :
Donovan wanted the Grail to become immortal, he died.
Elza wanted the Grail for the glory of being the one who found it, she died
Henry was more interested in the quest for the Grail than in the Grail itself, he lives
Indy wanted the Grail to save his father, he lives
Yes. For Henry, it was enough just to know that it existed.
And Brody and Sallah(especially) are just in it for the adventure, it seems.
@@OgreProgrammer Marcus wants to keep it out of the Nazi's hands. Sallah too, as he was also against digging up the Ark. Plus, he's just helping out a friend.
32:25 Okay, I guess I'll have to say it: Elsa couldn't "Let it Go" LOL!
I didn't catch that for the longest time, but I'm not a big Frozen fan. Another reactor to this movie pointed it out.
If you've eve watched Game of Thrones, the villain Mr. Donovan is played by the same actor that plays Pycelle, Julian Glover.
He was also the Imperial leader in the AT-AT in Empire Strikes Back during the assault on the Hoth rebel base.
@@Galiant2010
He was also the voice of Aragog the spider in Harry Potter & the villain Kristatos in the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only.
The man’s made a career out of playing villains in major franchises
Man, River Phoenix as young Indiana couldn’t have been better cast. He even had his run down, kinda crazy legs down hill. We’d hoped it would be the beginning of a young Indiana telling his back story in full. He was such a good actor but sadly passed away young.
Addie
George Lucas had a dog named "Indiana". He loved his dog, so when creating the character, Indiana Jones. Lucas added that line, "I love my dog" by Jones for this movie.
Thank you for this reaction... I needed that today. :)
This is my favorite Indiana Jones movie by far. I definitely like this one more than the first and second. It hit the right points for me.
Every villain in this movie has a flower in their pocket, I don't know the significance of this but there ya go
The crusader waving goodbye will always be emotional for me
16:34 your look of realization is priceless!
Great reaction!
All the indy movies are the greatest movies ever made people don't realize how funny these movies are .
21:54. This scene was filmed in the Taberna's desert, in Almería (Spain). At that time, the temperature was very high and Sean Connery decided to shoot that shot...without pants!!
Greetings from Colombia, beautiful girl!
That giant "door" carved in the rock in the canyon is real. its called "Petra" No grail in there though...
"unt zis is how ve say 'good-bye' in Germany."
lol
always loved that line.
This is how we say goodbye in Germany xDDD always cracks me up as a German :D
If anyone wants to see more of River Phoenix, he was in a movie called "Sneakers". It wasn't a block buster, but a decent techno spy action film with many good actors. It would make a pretty good movie to react to
There is actually a young Indiana Jones television series you might find interesting.
The scene where Indy fell over the cliff and lost is hat, a cast member there it back to him , that was not supposed to happen. But they kept it the movie. Because of jones reaction
-"Indiana...Let it go"
noboby like Sir Sean Connery to play Jones Dad! great react!
The well rounded and believable villains, especially Elsa, were a big part of the movie being great.
Good morning Addie! Psyched to watch this with you! 🙂
24:06 Wilhelm Scream!
I always had a crush on Dr Schneider ;-)
Enjoyed watching with you. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
