I like these reactors, in fact she is one of My Favourite reactors on here. But if I am being 100% completely honest... in this one I found them as annoying as they thought Willie was. These two couldn't make it through the dinner scene without freaking out. They think they would do better than Willie in the rest of the movie?? The Script had Willie screaming a lot, granted. But these two would probably be screaming just as much if not more.

😂 Yeah. She didn’t do a goddamn thing. Except...
Saved Indy's ass in the spike room.
Gets a triple kill in the mine car chase.
    Helps free kids.
    Saves Short Round on bridge.
    Helps knock Mola Ram down.
Gives Jones a weapon to fight Giant Thuggee.
    Throws rocks at Giant Thuggee.
Only gets kidnapped once, compared to 3 times with Marion.
Yeah. Did NOTHING. 😂 These two want a Gary Stu (like John Wick) or Mary Sue (like Anna in the 2019 film of the same name) who have no personality and never make mistakes. Willie isn’t Jones or Shorty, but she has way more charisma than Elsa and Spalko in the next two films.

What is your problem with talking lies about Marion to elevate of all people useless Willie, pretty pathetic, an Indiana Jones was useless he wasn't even important to raiders of the Lost ark plot, it's amazing how Indiana Jones keeps getting captured and yet you talk about Marion getting captured even though every character gets captured in every Indiana Jones movie especially Indiana Jones, seriously you are delusional idiot, that hates the fact that Marion was a strong character to be distorted and lying about her so much.

So go blonde instead of brown hair, an indoor girl vs. a tough as nails woman... and yes, she's a fish out of water tagging along on one of Indy's adventures and it leads to a lot of physical comedy. @CopiousDoinksLLC Рік тому +7

It's not just the fact that Willie really didn't have any choice in the adventure that absolves her of any hate - Willie was supposed to be an intentional subversion of the 'perfect action movie damsel' stereotype. Everything about her is the opposite of traditionally strong female stars - she's not on board with the hero's plans; she's not a particularly lovable character; basically, the only redeeming thing about her is her looks which was pretty much a necessity as they couldn't exactly cast an ugly woman in a Spielberg movie.
Essentially, Spielberg was saying: "This is what would happen if an ACTUAL random onlooker got drawn into one of Indy's adventures - they wouldn't just be unhelpful, they'd actually make it way more difficult for Indy to survive."

    • @noellegoble7944
      @noellegoble7944 Місяць тому

@@CopiousDoinksLLCI doubt that a random onlooker would be as stupid and in-the-way as she was. She practically made everything harder on purpose. There is a line between the typical action love interest, and a 30 year old
Woman with the self awareness and emotional intelligence of a 4 year old.

  • @hillarymead
    @hillarymead Рік тому +92

I feel like I always have to defend Willie every time someone reacts to Temple of doom(which is my favorite Indy) but you guys were really ruthless. You can’t blame the actress for the character. Willie also was written by a bunch of men, so there wan’t a whole lot of actual female perspective on what a “city girl out of water” would act like(most likely she was the persona of every high maintenance girl they’ve ever met in my opinion). They probably kept telling her to ham it up so it would be funnier(to men). Plus, there’s a lot of horror elements to this movie and she’s definitely a talented top scream queen.
And I agree with another comment, that to help with the dark elements of the film, the writers wanted to have two featured comic characters to lighten it up. Shorty provides the adventurer sidekick role, and Willie is the token female for Indy to smooze, but I also like to believe that she’s supposed to represent the audience perspective. I’m pretty sure none of the UA-camr reactors bashing her could ever survive what she went through.
Also, if you remember correctly, Marion didn’t do much to help Indy either except be sassy, she literally thought his whip was a snake, and tried to burn him. All she really did was talk tough. She just happened to be more used to the archaeological lifestyle because of her father. and chose to go do something dangerous with Indy and he already had a history with him so knew on some level what yo expect. Willie has literally never done any of this before, met Indiana Jones once, and I was dragged along without a choice. She has never fight, been around bugs/wild animals, and definitely had an incredibly traumatic experience in the fire pit.
I’m not gonna spoil anything about the female lead in the third installment, but trust me, all the women in these movies are written caricatures and the actors playing them did the best that they could. Also, you need to remember that this is supposed to take place in the 1930s. It’s very where the any women at all could would be experienced or know what to do in this kind of adventure at that time.

I never could understand any hate towards actresses/actors about their performances when that's what's given to them in the script and actually directed to have that performance. Okay, I'm going to defend Willie here. First, she was meant to be the opposite of Marion. Marion was basically a female Indiana Jones. (but rewatch Raiders. She was just as useless, just without the screaming) Second, she's a city girl thrust into a series of situations that are waaaay out of her comfort zone. Most of us would just like her if put into those situations. Every woman I know (and most of the men) would have let Indy and Shorty die in that spike chamber, screaming all the way back to their room. And who wouldn't freak out at that banquet, or when grabbing a gigantic bat, or watching some guy get his heart ripped out. And a lot of men would rather be with a Willie over a Marion. You were TOTALLY criticizing Kate Capshaw. Multiple times you criticized her line delivery which is criticizing the actress and not the character. I feel like these 2 read up a little on the movie before watching it and saw that there was a group of people that don't care for Willie Scott so both decided to really ham it up for the reaction. If you can't understand why Willie was played the way she was that's one thing, but to constantly dog on her and then say you weren't is disingenuous. She was introduced as an obviously spoiled person who is used to nothing but the finest things in life and is suddenly thrust into a nightmare world of murder, mayhem, human sacrifice, child slav@ry, and confronted with the fact that the supernatural does exist. She is constantly terrified with good reason and this makes her the comic relief of the film. Indy and Short Round are both calm and collected in the face of danger and even near death while Willie is crazed out of her mind. Short Round has many funny lines, but he is NOT the comic relief. You laugh *_with_* Short Round, but you laugh *_at_* Willie Scott.

And Kate Capshaw has a real comedy talents (example when she fell out of the bed).
And I'm supposed you are not familiar with james bond because it's taking the same formula has him in terms of women character. The trope is that james bond or indinana jones have a different lady sidekick in each movies and are all differents. And yes, some of them can be more uselless than previous ones and even when the love interest doesn't have any chemistry, it doesn't matter, it's not point : James got the girl at the end and same with indy.

I'm tired of the Willie slander. Speaking personally, she's super funny. Her dynamic with Indy is right out of a 1940s screwball comedy. She's the total opposite of Marion, and that's okay.
She also does get a small arc of sorts. We see how useless she is at the beginning of the film, but over time she gets a little more courageous and involved. She helps to free the captured children, at least tries to help Indy during his brawl with the big guy, protects Short Round a few times (look when Mola Ram corners them on the bridge, she forces him behind her) and punches out the bad guy on the minecart.
Hell, she goes from insulting the villagers by not wanting to eat their food and complaining about their accommodations to respectfully giving their greeting gesture when she returns to their village at the end.

Look at Indy’s reaction. His facial expressions are priceless. Even he is annoyed. I can’t believe you didn’t see that. Even you said he should be annoyed. He was the whole time. It’s the whole point of their chemistry. Complete opposites, but they are attracted to one another despite this. Over the years she has gotten negative attention for truly no reason. • @mundanepants

Wrt Kate's character: the choices make much more sense when you consider that Indy as a concept is heavily influenced by pulp fiction creations. Adventure magazines, action serials, and penny dreadfuls. You have a fairly straight forward adventure plotline that emphasizes what a badass the male protagonist is, and female characters are often left very 2 dimensional. This movie, more than Raiders, leans into that source material in every aspect, like with the depiction of different ethnicities and their characteristics.
Also like, in the original Raiders Of The Lost Ark script, Marion was supposed to be 15 when she has an affair with Indy. In later iterations she's aged up to 17 while he's in his 20s. Lucas wanted her to be 11 at the time of the "affair". I don't think either man was very invested in developing their female characters.

It's ok that you didn't like the Willie character, I don't particularly like her myself, but to be fixated on that and almost that alone throughout the entire movie got rather old. You both said that you thought this was a really good movie and yet your reaction and commentary is all about the one negative you found with the film. By the time I was half way through this reaction that negativity became really tiring and I was left thinking, "Yeah, we get it, you don't like Willie. Get over it already."
Consider too that she wasn't really written to be likeable. She's meant to be annoying, she's meant to be frustrating, and she's meant to be useless..... and I think that's ok. Afterall, she's a complete "fish out of water" as others have pointed out. She's a singer and actress, a massive star who has presumably lived a very privileged and pampered life, so her panicked and overwhelmed reaction to being thrown into this madness is pretty understandable. I mean, who wouldn't freak the f_ck out at seeing a man's still beating heart ripped from his chest before that man, somehow still alive, is sacrificially lowered into magma?

I feel like this movie single-handedly sabotaged Kate Capshaw's career. (Marrying a super-successful director and raising a family also, obviously, put her acting career on hold as well.)
She actually was in some fairly successful movies in the 80s, and (not a shocker) was a perfectly good, subtle actress in those. (Dreamscape. Space Camp.) It was only in Temple of Doom that people complained about her. To Capshaw's credit, even she asked Spielberg at times if she could tone it down here and not act as histrionic, but obviously, she was voted down.
I can imagine a version of her character that really could've worked. She could've started out as a cartoonishly "high maintenance" person. But then over time, becomes gradually more proactive and helpful. I think that would've gone over great with the audience. Everyone loves a character arc. It's strange that Spielberg/Lucas didn't think to go that route.

A bit of context that helps to understand the Willie character:
    - Spielberg and Lucas were going through rough divorces at the time, and that influenced the darker tone of the movie as well as the portrayal of the female character, because it feels like they use her as a tool for releasing their feelings towards women. It's a sort of art as therapy thing. We don't have to agree with them (they certainly don't nowadays), but it is what it is.
    - This movie goes even further on the whole pulp tropes, with the horror elements and the screams that feel very in sync with "scream queens" like Janet Leigh and other horror movie women.
    - Willie is not meant to represent how every women in her situation would act, but she is a very fish out of water character, a spoiled city girl who would not have a big character arc in this adventure. Again, we can argue with the execution, of course... but that was the idea.
    - Indy and her don't want to marry each other... they just want to bang. It's purely sexual, from both sides... and it's interesting to see a different relationship from the first one, IMO.
With all that said, I think watching this so many times as a kid made me numb to Willie's annoying traits, and I can totally understand people who see it today for the first time and have a hard time with it. But to me, this movie is much more than that and I love it. :)

This movie release was banned in India at that time. For showing us as some jungle wild animals people. They later issued apology. Stereotyping at its best.

There's an extended scene where Captain Blumbertt asks Indy if he's sure that Pankot is evil again and Indy responds that Indians are mostly vegetarian and shouldn't have eaten anything in their meal.

Man... yall's extreme annoyance with Willie was annoying LoL I get that she was A LOT... but i feel like you both missed a lot of the comedy of her character cause yall were hating SO heavy. Even the slap at the end seemed to annoy you. That sucked, cause that was a grest moment. Glad yall got around to watching this classic tho. And Shortround... A+++ character and performance.

Willy's character was more distressing Damsel rather than damsel in distress. for the first hour of the movie her shrill voice was like nails on a blackboard

As an adult it's so weird to watch how the British r shown as the heroes "liberating" India at the end..like c'mon now..c'mon now.still love the film but the agenda being pushed during this time is still sooo wild...

Honestly, Willie annoys me too but she makes the scenes light-hearted and she kind of feels familiar in that i've met people like her irl and while they could be annoying and whiney and loud, they often have valid reasons to be-just like Willie here. She got dragged into an adventure she clearly didn't want to be in, her life's been in danger many times, and it's established she's the sort who likes to live in peace, comfort, and glamour, and people like her don't suddenly get a personality change in just a few of days to become a super fighter cowgirl. I imagine if I were dragged to a wretched situation, I'll be (intentionally) annoying too just so the people who forcefully put me there won't get to have peace or fun while I'm inconvenienced and miserable.

    LOVED your reaction guys. Primo
I saw this in the cinema when I was 11 years old. Absolutely loved it. Harrison Ford is a legend and always will be
