Quick note Joe. The transmission tunnel is used by some of the battery on the i4 if you google an image you’ll see it’s not completely flat 👍

Hey Joe, those ramp traffic lights actually work quite well in peak hour traffic. They’re not really designed with eco-conscious outcomes in mind, but at least they prevent traffic jams which are much worse for emissions! Not having a go, but I find it pretty funny how you keep banging on about them and their impact on emissions when your job is literally driving around in cars and flying around the world! 😂

I am glad to have your take on a BMW electric car. After a recent episode of your podcast, I thought you would never come close to one of them. As good or bad as they are, it is good to hear it from you, based on your experience, more specifically BMWs.

the lights are to control the amount of traffic entering the freeway, which is why its free running, when i first moved to Oz they puzzled me as well, until I realised the benefit they brought to the free flowing nature of the freeway, they are not perfect, when it gets really busy in rush hour, there are still blockages, but they do still help somewhat

Thanks for this quick "non-review". I'm looking at EVs under the LCT threshold and it's hard to find reviews of the eDrive35. Everyone focusing on the M50 and eDrive40.
Edit: Also, the sunroof, heated fronts and paint are the AUD$3k enhancement package.

In NSW we also have the stop lights going on to the M4 however they only operate during peak times, so most of the time they are off.

BTW the traffic lights on the entrance ramps are to keep traffic moving on the main carriageway by titrating the merging traffic. They actually work quite well at that. My main concern with them is that the lights are too close to the merging point, so hardly anyone gets up to freeway speed before merging, making the merging itself more dangerous. (Not that that is limited to traffic-light-controlled merging lanes, sadly and annoyingly.)

Came here to say the same thing. Joe doesn’t realise that people in Australia aren’t great at merging! I used them everyday on my commute in Melbourne for years and they worked well by modulating the flow.

Thanks Joe! Think e35 is all you really need, as you pointed out
After 15 yrs with used BMW’s, about a year ago I went to order a new i4 and they said I’d need to wait 12-18 months… Also the space in the back was terrible
Then I ordered a Model Y and had it delivered in 2 weeks haha
Now I am waiting for the Neue Klasse!
If there was an electric 3 series touring, that’s what I would go for!
    Great fun your trip!

Pedantic I know but I've noticed you often mention you get full power and torque all the time or straight away in EVs. Electric motors still have power and torque curves like an ICE but they are a little different. You'll pretty much get max available torque from rest and will be instant in response minus whatever soft ramp BMW applies to reduce driveline shock which I think caused damage in the earlier i3. Max power though is a function of rotor rpm and torque so it won't happen most likely until rotor torque starts to drop off slightly but at a shallower gradient than the increasing rpm which I'd guess will be around 50-60mph in a single motor, single speed EV. From there, you have reducing power and torque which contributes to their lower high speed performance versus ICE as they generally only have 1 gear so can't shift to get back to peak power. In short, most EVs will give you max AVAILABLE torque pretty instantly but max power is just one instance over the entire speed range assuming it's a single speed transmission.

    Thanks for a great review!
I drive an old but well maintained BMW e39 540i which I plan to upgrade to an EV at some stage.
The i4 e35 was a natural choice and my first BMW Ev test drive. To be honest while I was generally impressed overall with build quality and ride I was underwhelmed with the lack of steering feel.
I came away less impressed than I expected for a car costing 100K - something seemed to be missing!
I had previously driven a used 2017 Tesla S and found the Tesla to be more impressive in terms of road dynamics at half the price!
I didn’t buy the Tesla due to age, battery replacement costs and Tesla’s business model.
I will try the BMW i4 e40 which seems to offer a lot more capability - but these are hard to find as most demonstrators are the e35 version!
    Subscribed!

Joe one thing that does not get mentioned on most videos about electric cars is tyre wear which, as the MacMaster channel recently pointed out, is considerably worse than ICE cars due to weight and compound. Also electric car values are taking a big drop at the moment

I recently tested the i5 M60, i4 35e, i4 40e, i7 60 and iX1 30e. The I7 was nice (but a bit ugly) and way over budget, the iX1 lacks range for me, not a big fan of the interior or exterior. The i4 35e drives nice, but lacks range. The I5 M6 is bonkers and to expensive. So I was looking for a i4 40e, but after a simulation for the monthly rate I ordered a i5 40e which costs me less on a monthly basis (corporate car in financial renting).
Seems like your main downsides have to do with interior space. Not really my concern since I am quite a bit smaller. I do like the i4 40e best, but a well speced one ended up being €250 a month more than the i5 I found.

Hi Joe, I have ordered an i4 eDrive 35 sport just recently (UK) I did opt for the 19inch though, just prefer the looks tbf. One thing I noticed the lining throughout is all black on the model you had, but all white in the same spec UK model! I would prefer to have all black and wonder if that's something I can request! It's not an option one can select. Unless what's on the website isn't the same in real life so to speak.

The i4 eDrive35 would be really temting as an EV, if it has another 100 miles of range, on top of the claimed 265 miles. But of course, this would mean a bigger battery, and therefore a heavier car! For me, EVs are just not quite there yet.

No future for electric cars. Even in developed countries in western europe this market is max 20-30% of drivers. Im very curious to see where this goes. I know i wont be buyung an electric car in the next 10 years. 50-70k is not possible for the working class. Leasing is the only way to go if you have a good employer. 20 years from now i predict a comeback for diesel even

Used is the obvious way to go. Even new fuel powered cars are expensive- it’s not just limited to EV’s !
Into future new fuel powered cars will be more difficult to buy - there will be less choice and prices will be higher, due to the car maker not wanting to sell them and the Government taxing them higher.
