    As a 2022 i4 e40 owner, I can tell you that the range-o-meter is all over the place. If you drive it carefully, you can easily get 300 miles in summer. But if the overall average is lower that 3 miles/kWh, due to it being hammered by other drivers etc, then it will always show a lower range than expected. Teslas show the "maximum" range the car was designed to get, whereas BMW show the "calculated from the average since factory" range.
    Plenty of times, I've started out on a trip with say 190 miles in the battery, and as the trip progressed, the range increased to well over 210 miles, after 30 or 40 miles of driving.

  • @migbham1
    @migbham1 10 місяців тому +46

    Please, for the love of all that's good, at least become familiar with cars before doing such extensive reviews. The range on the xdrive 40 is every bit as high as the estimates. You are basing your range shock on what's shown in the guessometer, which is pessimistic and never representative of the actual range you'll get.
    You complained about the lack of sunglasses storage. I'd highly recommend that you try using the sunglasses storage cubby to the left of the steering wheel on the bottom half of the dash.
    Last gripe from me - the iconic sounds electric. I generally agree with you that they cam become silly, but I'd also argue that they were incredibly useful for me when I was transitioning to my first EV from an ICE. Especially with the refinement and driving experience of the BMW, there is little to no perceptive difference when traveling at 60 MPH versus 90 MPH, and the synthetic sounds are incredibly useful feedback for folks who are adjusting to the silence.
    Sorry - one more complaint - the pseudo grill is not carbon fiber. It is polycarbonate.
    Edited for one more complaint - the i4 looks nothing like a three series. It looks like a four series. A three series is a sedan, the 4 series is a gran coupe.

    • @BogeyTheBear
      @BogeyTheBear 10 місяців тому +2

      The sunglass cubby is an option. My E40 doesn't have one. I just use the phone -oven- cubby for glasses and use an air vent-mounted charger for my phone.

    I've been driving an Xdrive 40 as a loaner for the last few days while my M50 is in for routine service. Driving, it is EXACTLY the same as the M50. I don't notice the difference in suspension or even the acceleration in normal driving. I do miss the options not installed on the M50. Range on this - both are on 19" wheels is - similar, rarely reaching the EPA 270 miles (per the projection - guessometer). Much lower in cold weather. Not a lot of difference based on drive mode. Still a great car.

    You feel for the trap of relying on BMW's guess o' meter on the lower right corner. It doesn't a better job of estimating over time. A better way of understanding the range is to charge to 100% and drive until it reaches 0% and then seeing how many kilometers/miles you've driven.

    • @steelehere1
      @steelehere1 9 місяців тому +2

      Also, BMW EV's have the wireless charger as an option. There's a chance the model you're driving doesn't have it installed in your car. The 'cigarette lighter' isn't a 'cigarette lighter' isn't a charge port for adapters that plug into a 'cigarette lighter.'

    • @Worththewatt
      @Worththewatt  9 місяців тому

      Yup we did fall for the trap! As for the Wireless charger the car had the package with the wireless charger included. It wasn't working unfortunately. Other I4 owners have reported similar issues.

  • @alexskull76
    @alexskull76 6 місяців тому

    I have an i4 for some months, I've learned to NOT look at the remaining mileage because it's heavily depending on the altitude difference in your trip, average speed, how many accelerations, conditioning fan speed, drive mode, ecc ecc. For example: if you take a trip of 30km but they are uphill you are consuming 5-6% of battery, BUT when you come back since it's downhill you will use only 2% (with regenerative braking and no change in your driving style). so it's not a 10-12% battery use round trip but only 7% because of the altitude difference. So don't look at the remaining mileage estimate and switch to an advanced mode judging how much battery you will use for a specific trip. I know it's not easy but in the end your charging anxiety will go away.

    • @BogeyTheBear
      @BogeyTheBear 5 місяців тому

      I've taken a few 140-mile round trips with a 1400 foot elevation change that takes out 50% of my battery charge: using 20% going downhill (there's a stretch where I'll go nearly 8 miles without a drop in charge) and 30% going back. This is on the wider 19" wheels so a 280 mile maximum range isn't unusual there.

    Why do you think that an all-wheel-drive version with larger wheels should have the same range as a rear-wheel-drive version?

    • @BogeyTheBear
      @BogeyTheBear 8 місяців тому

      It really is just the wheels that kill the range, not the drivetrain. I have an E40 that gets 270-280 miles of range because of the M-Sport package and 19" wheels that came with it. That's the same range as the M50 that gets the 19s as standard.
      The AWD variants will not engage the front motor unless required for traction or power, so an M50 or X40 cruising on the highway may be getting the same power draw as the E40. And since the motors are AC, when powered off like that the front motor isn't imparting any kind of eddy drag on the coils.

    I can tell you first hand, that the range when I'm driving is much shorter than when my wife drives it. It's definitely a daily driver. Charging up to 80%, we would go for about 160 miles before really wanting to charge it at 30%. Other than range, it's an immensely superior car than any other EVs., but you pay for it too.

    That is not a car charger that is a digital reader for your phone to be used as a digital key. The car charger is an upgrade. They look the same, but if you’ll notice there’s no tiny blue light right in the front if there’s no tiny blue light or a charge symbol on the platform then you’ll know it’s just a reader.

    Very nice video! I'm still at the point where the time to charge and the poor range of (almost) all EVs doesn't cut it for me. In my G20 330i I've managed to drive a stretch of 900kms with an average consumption of 0.48 l/km which gives a range of about 1200kms per tank. But other than that I think the development of better batteries is very exciting and within 10 years EVs will be the clear choice for basically everyone. Also hoping for the prices to go down...

    The fake engine sounds are assignable by driver. So you don't have to thumb wrestle. Honestly, you can barely hear it in Sport mode, and it is quieter in comfort and always off on Eco Pro. Don't fret about the sounds, and don't pay for them if you don't think you'll want them.
    Don't ever use the Guess O Meter on an electric car to determine your true range. That doesn't work well on any of them. They either predict pessimistically or optimistically and none of them can tell what roads are ahead for you until you route. The BMW system is extremely good at predicting the actual range you'll need when you map a route, and it can show you real time if you're falling behind or not while driving which alleviates initial owner's concerns about range. The i4 is more or less the equivalent to the Tesla Model 3 for range once you learn to drive it to maximize range. Most test drives and drivers who don't care about efficiency, massively underperform. The standard heat pump on all i4s is a critical benefit.
    Don't order the i4 with the wireless charger. It's a bad design.

    I will say brand new with almost full charge, highway driving in the SouthWest, I got about 270 mi/450km. I noticed when I was driving around town, that came down quite a bit more like 230mi/381km. The sound... kind of reminds me of the flyers in Wipeout on the playstation... which for me is a nice memory. Same problem with Qi charger - it charges for a bit for me, but the phone gets very hot very fast, and charging gives up pretty quick. Not very useful. The price... is pretty high. I don't love the price, but it's all electric, and all BMW. Agree, touch controls are awesome, very nice. The storage is pretty meager, especially give it's an electric. And the lack of a Frunk is a bit sad particularly given the boot/trunk is so small.
