Here it is, the first fully electric car to receive the BMW M division treatment… Introducing the BMW i4 M50!
Mat’s got his hands on this all-new M EV and he’s taking it on a test across Germany to see if it can really go toe-to-toe with some of BMW’s best petrol-powered performance cars.
Want to know the basics? Well for starters, there’s no denying that the i4 looks seriously impressive & can easily match up to the M3 in the style stakes. The interior is equally just as nice, but then again, it’s no surprise given it’s built on the same platform as the M3.
As for performance, well the i4 M50 can once again match up to the M3, delivering a power output of 544hp & 795Nm of torque - both of which are increases compared to its petrol-powered compatriot!
So it can equal both the looks and the performance… But is it really just as fun to drive once you’re out on the open road? Well, there’s only one way to find out… Stick with Mat for his latest in-depth review!

Honestly the best thing about the looks of this car is that it doesn't shout that it's an EV.
No grill is still better than fake grill.
Still not liking the grill at all but other than that I love how this looks. Go for an aftermarket front bumper and this thing would look crazy good

From what I have seen in this video this BMW i4 M50 is an excellent EV ! Modern looking design on the outside, luxurios interior enhanced with some stylish and responsive high tech elements, and performance with not much to be sorry about, save for the battery capacity. All in all this is a top contender in the field !
i really like BMWs and the other German car makers take on the EV transition.
they know they need to start, and they've done it with an existing chassis to quickly get it out there, the familiar styling gives time for their other petrol cars a chance to phase out slowly/gracefully. the new few generation of these German EVs will be exciting.
I love how they just designed as a normal petrol car. All these new electric cars nowadays always look like a spaceship. Good job BMW
More companies need to do this. There’s a lot of good petrol cars out there, the only way to get those customers to buy electric is to give them what they already want in a car
Disagree that bonnet and poor visibility is down to design cor engine upfront. They could of made dash lower and remove the hump on the back floor

I had one for a couple weeks. Agree, it feels SO heavy when pushing it on twisty circuits but the immense power would close whatever time you lost. The sickness is weird too, I felt carsick when I first picked it up - almost like that feeling when you’re a passenger just sat on your phone

The screens look good, but it would be much better, if they stayed using physical climate controls instead of making everything through the touch screen
They replaced the nicely integrated screens & useful, tactile buttons with yet another cheaper giant ipad bolted to the top of the dashboard

next time you're in Munich, you can test a car's suspension on the only broken street in the whole Bavaria. In Munich, take the Dachauer Strasse, the section between Pelkoven Strasse and the street going to Dachau (Max-Born-Str.). it's in the same shape as many Eastern Europe streets.

@@aussie2uGA Munich in general offers much more quality of life. Munich has two clean rivers in the city which is awesome in summer and one of the biggest city gardens in the world. The city in general is pretty neat and the city is more beautiful. The main reason for its location are roundabouts. The alps and its turquoise-blue lakes, you won’t find that near Berlin.
If you like a slightly fucked up city style and you’re a fan of an urban vibe Berlin is better.
Munich if you like nature and people who are more decent.

I love the thing. Great range, great performance and look at that interior! Great screen, but still with rotary control and real buttons on the steering wheel also.
btw he got the range wrong, 185km with 37% remaining is 294km, not 294 miles. poor range considering the battery size

Because of his driving. Other reviewers managed 18 kWh/100 km no problem. So 400 to 450 in everyday driving should be normal. Way more with the eDrive 40.

I really like that it is a hatchback! The normal limousine trunks are so unpractical. I had a Ford Fiesta MK2 or 3 and a BMW E46 220. In the Ford my bicycle fitted in the car, in the BMW I had to remove the front wheel to fit.

Another excellent review Matt. I drive a 330e and want to move to a full electric car so been waiting for a review of this since it was announced. Was leaning towards a Kia EV6 GT but the i4 M50 looks a better option for similar money. Look forward to you putting it up against a Model 3, EV6 GT and Mach-E! EV geeks will love that!
BMW will probably launch the new i3 (electric 3 series) next year along with the 3 series Facelift. Might want to also see how that turns up.

I learned this as a kid and I can't tolerate this behavior from an adult human being. Either this person likes to abuse my stuff or is as stupid as three meters of unpaved road.
That's why frameless windows make no sense. You have to go against your natural instinct when doing something as common as closing the door.

Back end styling is great! I can live with the "diffuser" channels in place of exhaust, that works well. Now give the design team who came up with the rear's design a chance at the front. It can only get better from where it's at now. That buck-tooth rat grill is really holding this car back.
It's nice to see automakers finally making electric cars that look good, and that don't look wonky and weird because they're electric. I do like this car, but I'd still much rather take the M3/ M4 over this pretty much any day. They seem to have a larger fun factor.

185km having used 60% of the battery gives a theoretical range of ~300km, or 186 miles
That's what my Renault Zoe 52kwh can do easy and I've paid 12k new with rental battery and 50kwh DC charger

I actually had to set my 3 series to english for the personal assistant because the italian version doesn't understand nearly the same amount of commands and phrases in general...
This color is the best. I am in love. I just LOVE purple, especially this particular variation. More car makers should be using this.

It looks nothing like a proper BMW, the tail lights are a weird shape, no Hofmeister kink, ugly oversized grill, side profile looks like a bar of soap, no strong shoulder line, rear looks terrible. The only good looking feature are headlights

To be fair, I don't mind the grille as much when the car is in electric guise? I'd actually consider buying a touring version if they release one
The big grille sticks out a lot more on ICE cars because it has to function as an actual air intake, whereas on EV they can make it sleeker and flow with the front fascia better.

Good review. Also notes the lack of steering feel. In the wet the extra weight (inertia) makes the car more likely to lose traction. Another reason to stick with smaller wheels. Good 2nd generation effort. 3rd generation will surely have a dedicated platform and better driving range.

Forget the car I love that colour... Actually the car looks pretty decent, still not a fan of the new giant kidney grill if I'm honest but I doubt a lot of people are.
Im on the very opposite side of the spectrum. I think the colour is disgusting. I have said it before, no car ever looked good in purple, EVER
@@Scamtutorials that's fair enough, it's down to personal taste, normally I'm not one for purple cars, I think they only suit certain Cars, for me BMW got the tone of this purple spot on. Whereas you won't ever like any car in purple, nothing wrong with that at all, as I said it's down to one's personal taste.

L!VE NOW I agree and think BMW are on to a something special, just a few things here and there like you mentioned, I see those things disappearing over time when ICE's are phased out in favour for full EV's. I Personally hate this trend that EVs are taking in the design department, I think most of us want traditional car design for EVs. Not this let's try and be futuristic for the new platform were adopting, that's when cars don't age well over time.

@carwow Would be glad to see Mat's regular review of the i4 eDrive40. After all, eDrive40 is the one which is going to be preferred by most.
@Mat, to be fair you should mention that you can load with 11kW AC at home. "find yourself a 150kW charger" - no problem if you utilize the iDrive 8 on board, should suggest many locations in the south of Germany, there are plenty now every few kilometers. However, you should go for the 300kW because the car can charge with up to 200kW DC!
Agree with you that such a car should be considered in countries that have already a nice charging-infrastructure (did you know in the Netherlands alone are already 87000+ public chargers?)

Yeah I had to get my calculator out there to make sure I wasn't being stupid :-) still 180ish miles with that kind of driving and in the rain is pretty good really.

The voice recognition on my £150 phone is really good. It always amazes me that it works so poorly in a £60k car.
It works well on them as does on Audi’s, it just messes up every now and then much like Siri and Alexa. It’s just pointless in a car when you can do everything yourself. The only time it’s worth using voice assistants is with CarPlay and using Siri to communicate with people as you have no other way to control your phone.
Matt’s always said that BMW have the best voice assistant but on my 3 series now it’s shockingly bad. Still not as bad as my Audi A3 used to be though
That's because your phone has better software. What I don't understand is why do some car companies spend all that money to develop their own software and not just use android or carplay since there is no way it will be as good.
Very true. Tried a Volvo XC40 BEV with the google system. Brilliant. All manufacturers should leave their expensive useless self developed systems and leave it to the experts.

This review is actually one of the best BMW i4 reviews at all. The only thing is missing the “drifting” :). Does the BMW i4 M50 has the 360 bird view? The price is in sweet spot.

It doesn't,you can open the bonnet but there are only cables and mechanical parts
The i4's Grille looks better than the one on the 4 Series because the lines arround the grille are different. (If you notice, the black parts around the bottom half of the big grille are sort of hiding half of the size of it 🤔)

Great review, I'm not sure I agree with the Maths though for range left, Km's maybe but not miles, I hope I am wrong though as I've pulled the trigger on the order!
Yeah ive pre ordered too currently driving 330e the full battery range i calculated as under 200 miles which is a bit disappointing though they were really pushing the car to limits at times.
Yes the range Matt got is 183 miles which has made me NOT pull the trigger on an order!
@@leebarlow2125 Under rainy conditions with seat heating. 300km is not optimal, but the current weather conditions are also not optimal for an EV. If BMW says 500km is possible i think you realistically could get 400km out of it
@17Deninho94 And that’s part of the problem. Once again we are in a position where the ‘claimed’ figures are a million miles off real world driving. If bmw say 500km then that’s what it should be.
Meantime I think I’ll stick with my remapped 435d which looks the same, is just as fast, does 420+ miles to a tank and can be refilled almost anywhere in under 3 minutes!
@@leebarlow2125 But is has always been the same. All car brands lie. If for example tesla is saying 600km is possible and they are lying then bmw cannot be realistic and say 400km is possible. They have to lie as well. Just for marketing reasons. If one brand is doing it everyone has to do it. The same with patrol engines where all the fuel consumption data is a lie and we know it. It is the same with electric range now. But nevertheless i personally think that 400km is decent with such a sports car. It is not optimal. I think we need to wait another 3-4 years until electric cars are really fully developed and maybe batterys are a little less heavy and the cars overall a little better optimised and more intelligent with their power consumption. Then i think 500km is realistic in the future with a recharge done in 15 mins. Until then i am happy with the 3 series PHEVs.
8:15 that bump in the of the floor at the middle seat is used to give the chassis a lot more stiffness, what is very useful when you are designing a BMW. Possibly this a reason BMW did this.

The interior is now probably the best in any car and somehow thay made those nostrils look great on this electric version. This over the Model 3 any day unless supercharger network is a concern

I love the looks of this car. However, wouldn't it be better to compare this car to other EV's instead of comparing it to a M3 and then conclude it is not as much fun? :)

What’s interesting is that he got motion sick due to the lack of connection with the vehicle. He mentioned no sound from acceleration and it throws off our mental sync with the mechanical feel of the automobile so we can’t accurately mentally prepare for acceleration or maneuvers..
True point indeed, wierd. @Matt is this with all EV's you test. get motion sickness. Interesting development. First time I hear about this, getting sick in an EV.. Especially since you have a daily M4 you can do the comparison.

For a EV it’s not bad, coming from a Tesla model 3 performance owner I can’t see the value in comparison since the 3P is faster and about 10k cheaper. But I do feel the bmw does look nicer and definitely is more luxurious.
In the UK the M3P with metallic paint (standard on the BMW) is £61,000, so less than £2,000 difference. What would be massively different would be the build quality with the BMW being on a different planet in terms of quality of materials and build quality.
@JOHN BOWATER not sure what your talking about. The panel gap isn’t much different than what I’ve seen from other manufactures, plus Tesla comes out your home to fix any discrepancies you report. as far as interior design goes, it’s subjective but also minimalistic. As for the bmw interior is although good quality, it’s still just a copy n paste from all its other models, they had the opportunity to build this from ground up but decided not to, plus it still has that ugly useless and hideous fake grills.
Hi Matt, you need to remember the stats in the German car are Kilometers, so 293 kilometers, not miles. Equates to ONLY 183 miles
