Such a pleasure to hear a foam discussion from the perspective of an experienced hobbyist. Experimenting can be great fun and I hope anyone that's new to this hobby catches this video.

Keyboards in the past rarely had foams, so it came by surprise that a lot of kits right now do not feel/sound good without foams. Aside from the fact that everyone is going after the "thock" sound

Thanks so much for doing this! New to the hobby and this was a really well laid out and presented bit of info. I definitely overdid my tape mod, it seems. I'm gonna go pull it off and see if I can hear more nuance in my switches!

I would love to see a video about how to open different types of keyboard cases correctly (without damaging them).

PE foam and tape mod really makes every board sound the same IMO. So I usually either use either but not both at the same time to retain the character of the switch.

Thank you, Doc! for this type of video, been thinking of upgrading/ altering my stock keyboard. I currently have a Keychron K8 with brown gateron switches and have been using it for the past 2-3 years and wanted a new take with my daily driver. It has been hard where to start, since there are many types of foam offered online/ onsite. Now at least i know, what i think i like to add to my current setup :)

keycaps and good switches will change that board, day and night difference :)

It boils down to preference talaga, Doc. If you work in an office environment and use a mech keyboard I guess it's better if you have foam as sound dampeners as it can be disrupting to other people.

A lot of the new CN budget boards are now using a "PET Sheet" underneath the poron/ixpe switch pad, it's fully clear plastic like the kind used in water bottles... and it seems like it has a massive impact. AULA F87/F99, RK R75/R98, Leobog Hi75, etc.

Nice video sir , beginner here and was doing my research about the whole mkb hobby, I can't apprehend kung what are the reasons for some mods, like i've watch hundreds of videos about modding and building keyboards and says many different terms and abbreviation... and yes I looked up those terms but I don't get why does it matter, for example the different materials for the different components of the keyboard and switch itself, or what is the difference between having 2 types of plastic as the plate or like different switches having differnt the switch housing, I don't understand what's their differences and how they affect the whole sound and feeling.. and I'm also trying to learn the different mods that can be done to change the sound or feeling when typing but I cant find someone that lists all the mods available and I cant find what does a particular mod change or its influence, I'm also curious about the term switch pingin and about making keyboards flexible to type on, I only watch on youtube that's why I dont understand whats keyboard being hollow and being foamy.. I can only distinguish clacky as high sounding and thocky as deep sounding.. currently I am on a prebuild mechanical keyboard by royalkludge and has many questions about modding and upgrading if I went to that route.. thankyou for the response sir and again informative video
Its hard to get into this hobby for me because all other mkb enthusiast are like all well informed about different jargons or things and what this things do and as a beginner I can only search for reddit youtube and forums about recommended switch or keyboard, It's hard to find someone that has knowledge and knows how to explain not by just saying 'oh i will do this mod with these other mods to improve the sound and make it also have more flex' and I was like, what does thaat doo I can only search and the answers are ' it reduces unwanted sound, oh it makes the sound more whole' what are those unwanted sound?? what is a whole sound?? I know many things are subjective but how do I know what to specifically hear for If i didnt know what it changes or what it improves.. Id like to know the details or the science behind things and why are they done to have those different results..

First time I put 2 layer masking tape mod. Then I go 3 because why not. Then all switch I put in there, cheap or expensive one all sound almost same.

What material is the lower foam made of? I have a non-standard keyboard and need to cut my own foam.

Could you give me some advice on making my keycron v6 sound thick thockery and nice I’m coming from silicone keys and plan to use a layer of electric tape a killamat on bottom and getting baby kangaroos and and tx ab stables with bdz lube and 250g0 on stems of stabs and using switches as they come no extra lube? will this give me my deaired sound brother? I really cannot afford to guess and waste money on this one and done keyboard I’ve been through countless gaming boards and this is my first custom job. Thanks! 😊 oh and some double shot pbt caps

      Looks fine.
Those mods and switch selection are good. For the v6 dampening is very important. I think it comes with foams already.
      PE foam might help
But def getting good switches and keycaps
