    This was wonderful to see (and to hear) 🥰I just received my first wheel which is also a CPW and I am excited to learn to spin on it 😊

    Lovely wheel! I like the big drive wheel, and the ratio and the twist it makes in no time at all. And the beauty of the wheel!

      I love it too for the same reasons. I love the wear and tear on it, showing it has had a working life!

    Hi Liz, lovely old wheel and I just love that chatter from the bobbin. I dare say in a group it might get on someone else's nerves, but I love it! I have an old Norwegian to refurbish that looks similar to your Canadian, I'm hoping I can do it justice by spinning long draw like you. Hugs Keith X

      Long draw is all about good fibre well prepped! And being relaxed. Which is a pain for learning it.... You will get there!

    I have a aram paradice cpw, a bit smaller wheel with a different tension system.

    I've watched a couple of videos about Canadian Production Wheels and it seems to me that they are not the best choice for a beginner. Is that a fair comment?

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace  8 місяців тому

      It is! It is possible to learn on a CPW - many folk did it in the past - but it will be less frustrating learnin on a modern wheel first. If that is not an option, take plenty of time to learn how to treadle the CPW before you start to get fibre involved. In addition, it would be a good idea to learn to spindle spin before trying the wheel. That will get your hands used to dealing with the fibre. Thinkk about learning to drive a car - the idea is straightforward enough, but it takes time and pratise to get your hands and feet working together!

    I have the same wheel and learning … why does my flyer does not up the yarn being made ? My leader just twist and doesn’t wind on bobbin … can you suggest something to be done ?

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace  2 роки тому +1

      Two possibilities. First, have you oiled the bobbinaxel well, so the bobbin can move easily? Second, is the tension high enough? Try tilting the whole flyer assembly away from the wheel - just a bit. Thatsould help.

    I'd also love to see more of your videos showing how to get larger yarn thicknesses if you would.
    May I ask what you knit with your yarns? I see there seems to be more than one whorl grooves, does this mean there are more speeds to this lovely wheel of yours?
    Thank you

      I am hoping to do some next summer. There is not enough light here to do them in the winter. I spin all sorts of thicknesses on my Bliss, but the CPW is built for thinner yarns. There is only one ratio - you change the speed by changing the treadling spead! Because the wheel is so large, it builds up a lot of momentum so the flyer fair flies! Thick yarns are not really possible on this one.
      I mainly knit with my handspun - anything from fine lace shawls to chunky cowls and scarves. I knit almost anything that can be knitted, and am currently working on a book which includes quite a few patterns that can be used with any thickness of yarn - ideal for handspun.

      Northern Lace Cannot a little thicker yarn be spun on her? I just found and contacted Bob boy (in the states), I think his name is, and he actually makes bobbins for these wheels and also flyers with an orfice twice the size of what they originally come with. So therefore it would be a 1/2" orfice instead of the 1/4" they have now. How do you think that would work on the CPW? Thank you

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace  6 років тому

      You can get uo to half aran thickness (ie a single for plying with another to make an aran weight yarn) but not much thicker because of the speed of the wheel. The speed of the wheel is the limiting factor - you can only treadle so slowly before the wheel halts. You might get up to chunky wieght. if your fibre is very well prepared beforehand, and if you are wanting a highish twist yarn, but not much thicker than that.

    I have a CPW and it needs a new flyer and bobbins, can you tell me where I might be able to get those? Thank you.

      It depends where in the world you are. Are you a member of Ravelry? If so, go to the CPW group there and ask, giving your location. There are a couple of people in Canada who specialise in repairing CPWs. I got my new bobbins and my flyer overhauled by Mike Williams - www.michael-williams-wood.co.uk/

    Hi again! Do you have any help how to adjust the tilt tension? The fiber isn’t pulled on the bobbin … even the leader makes pigs tail on the outside of the orifice. Also my wheel doesn’t chatter like yours … would it be how I attached the drive band ? I attached this way … wheel, bobbin , wheel, whorl. The cross is in the bottom . I spin clockwise z twist … hoping to be able to spin … thanks for your input and help !

    • @NorthernLace

      The noise varies from wheel to wheel. Some are quieter than others. From what you say it seems you have got the drive band on right. Have you joined the Ravelry CPW group? They have loads of info, and you can upload photos etc. www.ravelry.com/groups/cpw-lovers

      @@NorthernLace i will join the group! Thanks! I still can’t get any yarn to be pulled up on the bobbin … as if I was a beginner spinner… no matter the tension being changed on the tilt tension … no pulled up yarn …

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace  2 роки тому +1

      @@helenedumoulin9092 The only other simple thing is the drive band. If it is too long it will not turn the bobbin, or if it is too stretchy..... Ask on the Rav group, including photos of the whole flyer set up etc, and we may be able to give you more ideas.

    Too bad you don't show treadling on it .

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace  4 роки тому

      As the treadling is the same for almost any wheel I thought there was no need for that. As with any wheel, you work out the exact placement of your foor on the treadle, and the speed of the treadling to suit yourslef, your wheel and your fibre. Most CPWs were single treadles, but a few were double.

    And you don’t see the technology you play with do you ...
    Benjamin Franklin showed me how to generate energy with one of these ...

    • @resourcedragon
      @resourcedragon 8 місяців тому

      The energy is being used to create yarn and wind it onto the bobbin. It's like saying that a windmill that is used to pump water or grind grain into flour could be used to generate energy - the energy is going straight to the job the user wants done. Or think of a solar hot water system - the energy is going straight to heating the water - and it just bypasses the middleman.
