Thank you SO much. A sweet older lady I met at the library just gave me her mother's spinning wheel too! This same style spinning wheel actually 😅 She insisted I couldn't repay her except by giving it a loving home where it will be used 😭 so sweet so no complaints here but it definitely needs some love, it's been just hanging out by her piano for a long time. This video is my new best friend. You're amazing.
Hi, with your help I have a Ashford traditional spinning that works. I have taken it apart reglued the hub. Got a new hub pin. I now know how my spinning wheel works. The wood looks good with linseed oil soaked in. I feel happy. It's so smooth no clunks or bangs. Yippee 😊
Yes! Thankyou! So good to see someone giving new life to a kiwi classic. I have an Ashford traveler and am looking at giving her (Elizabeth) a refurbishing. This is so informative
I found the same model Ashford Traditional that needed a lot of help and I came across your video while researching it. You gave me the confidence to take on the project and today I spun my first terrible yarn on a WHEEL! Thank you so much for making this video!!!

I started watching your videos a few months ago and they inspired me to pick up a few wheels to fox and restore, and just yesterday I came home with this exact wheel… I didn’t realize at first that it was the same as the wheel in your video that started me down this path. So much fun!!
Thank you so much for this! My partner gave me a 150-year-old wheel for our anniversary and I'm about to refurbish her. You've offered some great advice here!

Thank you for taking the time to create this video, it has been so helpful to me. I have the exact same spinning wheel and now it works perfectly after following your instructions!!
I’m fairly sure this is the exact version of my wheel. Thank you so much for this video! I’m very much a beginner and while mine is actually in pretty good condition, learning how to care for it (…since it’s been sitting in my hallway for eight years) is a high priority!
Thank you so much for this video. I was gifted the exact spinning wheel. It had never been used, however the parts still need refurbishing. I can hardly wait to get it ready to go. I’ve never spun before but am extremely excited to learn. ❤
I have just picked up an identical wheel, same age and same problems. This was so helpful, thank you very much for making this video. I live in New Zealand, so it was fortunately very easy to get the parts.
After watching this I took another look at my ashford traditional spinning wheel that I bought used a year and a half ago when I first started learning to spin. It is exactly like this one! It has everything except bobbins which I got ordered from my local fiber shop. The owner said I had gotten a lucky find. It has the same tension knob and leather strap on the foot and everything. I hadn't named her like a lot of other spinners do. But since she must be from the 70s too, I'm naming her Flower Girl. I loved her any way, but you made me realize how special she is!
I bought mine used, in the late seventies. It looks just like that one and it was called a kit wheel. Just a drive band and a little spring is all I've had to replace. I have spun thousands of skeins of wool and only needed to oil it. Great video!
I saw a spinning wheel for 10 euros (about 11 dollars) at the thrift store yesterday and decided to get it this morning. Just took it home and figured out that it was the same as the one in the video. Its got everything, including spools, the tension knob and a lazy kate (still need to figure out how that works tho) and it works too! I just need to clean it up and replace the drive band and the leather attachment thingy. It sounds like I got really lucky and I can't wait to learn how to spin. Thanks for the info, looking forward to watching your other videos to learn how to use it. You guys have great energy, very catchy :)
I just picked up a 70s traditional from Facebook marketplace and I'm so excited! She's in *stunning* condition. I'm considering painting it with some folk designs but... vintage...
Thanks - really useful video! I've just bought a vintage Ashford Traditional (c. 1981) as my first wheel and am nit sure how much refurbishing it's going to need!

He's pretty awesome, I'll keep him around! 😁 I haven't had a chance to do any real spinning yet. I have been oiling and treadling like crazy to get the wheel bearings broken in. It's spinning so much easier and smoother now! I'll probably do some of my current sweater spin with her so I'll keep you posted!

I am soooo excited 🥳 going to pick mine up next week now I know what to look for, cracks in the seams of the wheel itself! I hope it is in good shape! Then clean and replace parts and refurbish and oil! Taking it apart by myself and putting it back together seems a daunting task 😬wish me luck 🍀
You and Mark did an amazing job on that wheel! You work so well together :-) I bought my 1970s Ashford Traditional about five months ago and didn't do any work on it because I just wanted to start spinning. I'm so inspired now to clean it up lol. Thanks for all the great tips. You rock!

This is very familiar - I have just finished renovating my 30 year old Ashford Traditional. It had been somewhat neglected. Just taken it for its first spin and all seems fine! Just came across your videos. I shall be back to watch more.
I have two Ashford Traditional, love them both. I also have a Pippy Poore, and a Mecchia Saxony style wheel. All are made in New Zealand. Good job on the wheel. 👍
My recent find is just like this one but has leather bushings instead of the traditional Ashford Plastic bushings for the flyer. My hub is busted and all the spokes are loose. Im going to try to fix it. Might need to replace or replicate the center hub and just make a new one.
I’m SO glad I stumbled on your channel! This is literally my second video watching tonite lol! I have an antique wheel that my family brought over from Norway in the early 1800s and it has some missing parts...I know nothing about spinning...soooo looking forward to your videos! ❤️ from California
Welcome! And what a treasure you have! My family came from Scandinavia too and my aunt still has the wheel my Great grandmother brought to America. I love wheels with history! 💕🧶
What a great find, beautiful wheel! It was really fun watching you both transform Gail from a dusty duckling to a beautiful swan! I’ll be looking forward to see what you spin on her!
Great video - thanks Evie. Even though I have no plans to refurbish a vintage wheel (!) this was so useful and interesting. It gave me a real sense of the workings of my little Ashford Kiwi and reminds me of why I oil her frequently! Your videos are always fun and informative- thank you🙏
Thank you, this is very instructional. I have just acquired a spinning wheel of my own, it’s not quite the same as yours but I think the maintenance looks like it would be similar. I think mine is older. 🙂
Great video -- I remember when I received my hand-me-down Ashford Traditional -- also a 1970's -- it actually had a nail jammed into the wheel instead of the proper pin it had served several years as a home decoration and a battle field for my son-in-law as a young boy for his plastic army men -- thank goodness I too had a very helpful assistant (my hubby) and he was able to get the nail out, glue the wheel hub together so a new pin would work and he actually sacrificed an old belt to make me a new leather connector -- this was before I found the maintenance kit and I absolutely love my wheel and the fact it has a history.
Hi wonderful job on restoring the wheel!. I do have a question though. My granny has a old spinning wheel she has no idea what brand the wheel is or how old it is. And there dosent seem to be any names or numbers on it to help. How can I find out what the wheel is?
Not sure if you are still answering questions from this thread but my hub pin came loose and I cannot blindly find the hole in the crank shaft to pin it in place. And I cannot remove the wheel crank shaft to clean it. I saw that Mark had a difficult time pulling the wheel shaft do you have any tips or tricks? Mine is stuck tight. Thanks
If anything is stuck that should be able to move, we usually give it a little oil and come back in a few hours or the next day. If you are having trouble finding the hole for the pin, Mark put the pin in as far as it would go and then slowly turned the wheel around while wiggling the pin against the metal until he could feel it catch on the hole. Then it was a matter of wiggling it back into place. It took some patience but it worked. When it was stuck and he couldn't get it out, it was a job for pliers and some leverage. I hope you get your wheel back in tip top spinning shape! 🧶🐑✨
I love this video! I went through the same thing when I got my first Ashford traditional. I had to learn a lot on my own. I was only 13 back then 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️. I still have it and use it along with all my other Ashford wheels. Thanks for this video!! 🤗🤗
I wish I could send you a picture of the wheel. It’s a 1981 traditional I bought for $199 from an antique store here in Crossville TN. I love my Elizabeth but my original traditional is still my favorite work horse. I bought it in July 2000. It is a sharp looking wheel
I just found a vintage 1970's Ashford Traditional at a yard sale today for $2! I found your channel and Love it! You're so positive and up beat ☺️. The video on refurbishing your wheel is exactly what I needed. I can't wait to watch more! I learned to spin over 30 years ago on my sister's Ashford Traditional, it was perfect for a newby. I stopped spinning when I had kids and returned my sister's wheel. The one I got today isn't complete but in really decent shape and the wheel turns easily. It needs the Fly wheel, bobbins, tension rod drive line and leather strip to attach the treadle but I'm looking forward to refurbishing it and start spinning again. I have to relearn everything though 😉. I spent $150 on parts and a maintenance kit but after it's done it'll be a nice usable wheel. ☺️. I'm a knitter and weaver too and so glad I found your channel!
Hello! I'm wondering where you found the old style tension knob? I just got my very first spinning wheel and it's pretty much exactly the same as this one!! I can't find the old style for sale anywhere.
I'm so grateful for this video! Just like another commenter, I met a lovely lady at the library who gave me this exact same model! It needed pretty much the exact same treatment you showed in this video. I do have a question though. You talked about needing to replace the wheel bearings, but my wheel didn't have any bearings at all where the crankshaft connects to the legs. Can I use it without those bearings or do I need to order some before I put it back together? Thank you!
Hi! I have found a vintage one too and I think there is goop inside the bobbins because they don’t turn well. What cleans the goop out and with what to ok please??
I have had this same wheel that I got at a fiber festival around 1998. Mine has split at the hub just like you said, right down the middle. Can this be glued and clamped? (It also went too fast to see just how you got the wheel off..lol.
We had to pry the pin out of the hub and slide the wheel off the shaft. I think you should be able to glue and clamp yours together, but you can also contact a wheel repair expert or check with Ashfords to make sure you are doing a solid repair.
I just received an ashford traditional and am looking for the hardware, could you possibly list the hardware, especially the screws, washers and the dowel nuts? Like sizes and such. Thank you!
Hi Evie & Mark, this video is so much fun, possibly hard wotk .You & Mark mske a Great Team. It was a Nice Thought to name her after her Owner. Ive watched you Spin on her & that you gave her away after Christmas. That to was a lovely Gesture. God Bless you all. Lots of love Jen xxxx
Hello. Thank you so much for this video, it has been really helpful. I also have a very similar Ashford wheel. I wonder if you can advise how I can repair my hub. You mentioned that the hubs sometimes split along the centre line, mine has done this and there is loads of play in the wheel. How might I go about restoring it please. I have a picture of it but can’t see how to post it on here. The split is quite large, approximately 5mm all the way around. Any advice you could give would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
I think the best thing is to open it up, sand off any rough spots, use a good quality wood glue, and clamp it back together. I resist adding anything like a screw to secure it because it could put it off balance. I hope that helps! 💖🧶
I think Ashford only recently started to include 2 springs. It will work fine with one, but two makes adjustment easier. If that's the only part you need, you can easily find a spring at a hardware store! 💕🧶
@@JillianEve fantastic! Thank you! I just watched your spinning for beginners video too and have saved it. Once I’ve repaired my wheel I’m going to follow that to get started. I am a little concerned that my leg won’t cope with treadling but I think I can see how I would be able to use a small motor to turn it without losing the beauty of the wheel itself. But I’ll see. Maybe the treadle will be easier than I’m expecting.
Hi! I love your videos!! I was recently given a traditional ashford spinning wheel when I bought a schacht floor loom. She threw it in for free! I’m in heaven!!! This spinning wheel looks like it was unfinished but then had some water damage. I’m wondering if I should sand it down and stain in. Or just do the linseed oil I’m missing a few things so I’ll order the kit you recommended.
Oh, I’ve got three Traditionals along with another 6 different models I’m reducing my family at the moment. Thinking of getting a group together locally after this lockdown. I use wood cleaner, danish oil (nicer smell) and then wax. 😚
I have some wax too that I'll probably use after the wood has been oiled another time or two. I've never tried Danish oil though. 🤔 Now I need to smell some oil! 😅
Wow, 9! And I thought 2 was bad. My spinning group has been meeting on Zoom. It's fun to get together and chat 'n spin (and I don't have to clean up my doggy house.)
Oh I'm so glad I found your video! I recently acquired a 1983 model Traditional and I'm in the middle of freshening her up. Can I ask why you used linseed oil instead of the Ashford wheel wax?
Are there any marks or brands on the wheel that would tell if it's an ashford? Im going today to buy one and it looks like an ashford traditional but I do not see the spinning wheel brand.
Thanks for this video! I just picked up an Ashford Traditional….it is almost identical to this one but my orifice is square…..would you know it’s time period?
Just found your channel. My daughter wants to learn to spin and I have a chance to buy one of these for 250 dollars. It definitely needs the leather strap and probably other work. I’ve not seen it yet. How much did it cost you to restore yours if you don’t mind me asking. We know absolutely nothing about spinning but she’s really wanting to learn. Thanks!
I recently found an Ashford in beautiful condition on Marketplace for only $50. I had to rescue it! I have not used it yet, but bought a new drive band for it yesterday.
Hi! Can I ask how you connected the con rod to the crank shaft (that part was missing from the video) and if that solution worked for you and allowed the wheel to spin well? I have an Ashford Traditional about the same age as this one that was spinning fine before we had to disassemble her for a cross-country move. But I wonder if we lost a part or put her back together wrong, because nothing is working to get those two parts connected so she can spin smoothly. (I've tried two different screw and nut combinations, one gouged the wood before just falling apart, and the other just got tighter until she refused to spin.) Any help you could offer would be great!!
@@JillianEve It was the leg! I seem to have gotten the problem fixed though (knock on wood, lol); the bolt needed an extra nut! (Fortunately, my wife had taken pictures before disassembling her so I was able to figure this out.)
I JUST picked up an Ashford spinning wheel for $100 (I think it’s from the 1980s). I’m an avid knitter for 12 years but I’m looking forward to creating my own yarn.
Quick question. Did you have to replace the bearing in the top of the conrod? The bearing for that year isn't available, it sits in the conrod just in the interior of the crank bolts. I found a solution a plastic bobbin from my sewing machine. I separated the bobbin in half, a little sanding and it work like a washer, also the right inside diameter for the crank. So far so good! But I would be interested in other folks solutions. Thank you
Hi! I recently acquired a vintage Ashford Traditional just like yours. I am working on getting it to run smoother. Do you have any tips on how to remove the hub pin?
Mrs, Jillian did you say "boiled linseed oil?". Is the linseed oil is the oil that come from the Flax, seeds?. Thank you, so much every drop of help count 🙏🙏
I am still not able to ship the spinning wheel because I can't get the pin out! I've tried the PB lubricant, regular oil, and WD40. I've tapped the pin from underneath using an allen wrench and a hammer. Still nothing. It's not mine and I'm so afraid I'll damage it. Did you guys bend the pin at the top to get a grip on it to pull it out? Should I be trying to tap it out from the bottom, or pull it from the top? It's really in there! Any suggestions? I don't want to have to ship it in a huge box. Thanks!
Hi. Thank you so much for this video it's so informative and useful. Could you show me how you fit the drive band please. Your husband is a star rebuilding the wheel.
Hi Sally! Thank you! The drive band on a single drive spinning wheel is fairly simple. I tie it round the drive wheel and then around the flyer. I secured it with a double overhand knot and that's it! Easy peasy 🐔 squeezy! 💕
Watching this episode for the first time today and it got me to thinking. I purchased my 1987(ish) Ashford Scholar a couple years ago. It had not been used regularly but had no rust and was in working order. It still spins fine and I have lubricated the appropriate parts once, but I have never done anything to the wood. Should I take the whole thing apart to condition the wood?
I think it all depends on the shape it is in. If it seems to be in good shape, continue doing regular maintenance on it, but you shouldn't need to take it apart. Happy spinning!
Back about 10 years ago I bought a 1970s Ashford Traditional then later replaced her with a matchless. I recently got her back out, cleaned her and have been attempting to spin. Adjusting everything is so difficult and she wobbles like crazy (neither is new for this wheel) however my biggest issue is once I start going the end of the bobbin with the brake band slips off and the brake band comes off and everything comes to a halt. Not sure what is going on to cause this but it’s like the rod the bobbin slides onto isn’t quite long enough and barely goes through the leather piece it’s held on. Any suggestions? Thank you

My recent find is just like this one but has leather bushings instead of the traditional Ashford Plastic bushings for the flyer. My hub is busted and all the spokes are loose. Im going to try to fix it. Might need to replace or replicate the center hub and just make a new one.
Thankyou l needed that refresher ❤️❤️❤️
Very interesting! Thanks!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Happy spinning! 💕
I have this same wheel I picked it up in pristine condition and love it!
It's so good!
What a great find, beautiful wheel! It was really fun watching you both transform Gail from a dusty duckling to a beautiful swan! I’ll be looking forward to see what you spin on her!
I have some projects I'm getting ready!
Most excellent job on the wheel! You guys are so adorable!! Just as if you were newly weds 😊
We keep the spark! 😁💕
THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!! I NEED THIS VIDEO 🌷💖🌷🙏💕
Great video - thanks Evie. Even though I have no plans to refurbish a vintage wheel (!) this was so useful and interesting. It gave me a real sense of the workings of my little Ashford Kiwi and reminds me of why I oil her frequently! Your videos are always fun and informative- thank you🙏
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! And yes...oil, oil, oil! 💕😊
Thank you, this is very instructional. I have just acquired a spinning wheel of my own, it’s not quite the same as yours but I think the maintenance looks like it would be similar. I think mine is older. 🙂
What a beautiful wheel!
That is such a great story.
I love that your wheel has survived actual battles! 😱😜Wheels with stories are the best! 💕
Hi wonderful job on restoring the wheel!. I do have a question though. My granny has a old spinning wheel she has no idea what brand the wheel is or how old it is. And there dosent seem to be any names or numbers on it to help. How can I find out what the wheel is?
Lots of research into the history of your area, similar wheels online and generally looking around for info. 💜🧶
I think it is wonderful experience to take apart and fix up a wheel! Happy spinning! 🐑🧶💕
Even with all the parts you bought, you still came out with a deal for an Ashford Traditional! What a find! Happy spinning!
Hello! I'm wondering where you found the old style tension knob? I just got my very first spinning wheel and it's pretty much exactly the same as this one!! I can't find the old style for sale anywhere.
Try The Woolery, Paradise Fibers, or your local Ashford dealer and tell them you need the other style. 😊🧶💜
Thankyou this was very helpful
This was helpful in dismantling mine to ship it across country.
I just bought a wheel and didn't realize it was missing parts. Where do I go to get parts made?
Spirit Wood, Bobbin Boy and if the maker or wheel company is still operating you can try there. Good luck! 🧶💕
Loved the silence of the lamb reference 😂 Great video.
I wondered if anyone would catch that! 🤣
I recently got a new to me traditional wheel, I think I need to get a spring mine only has 1
I think Ashford only recently started to include 2 springs. It will work fine with one, but two makes adjustment easier. If that's the only part you need, you can easily find a spring at a hardware store! 💕🧶
Was the fishing line in the kit too or did you need to buy that separately?
It was in the kit. 😊
The good news is you have a Traditional that can be restored and serve it's purpose for years to come.
I'm looking forward to spinning with her! 🧶💕
Hi! I love your videos!! I was recently given a traditional ashford spinning wheel when I bought a schacht floor loom. She threw it in for free! I’m in heaven!!! This spinning wheel looks like it was unfinished but then had some water damage. I’m wondering if I should sand it down and stain in. Or just do the linseed oil
I’m missing a few things so I’ll order the kit you recommended.
I bought to older ashford and both of them do not have hooks on both sides the flyer. Is that normal and will it be balanced?
There's a link in the description to the timeline of Traditionals. Happy spinning! ❤🧶😊
Thanks!
Mark: "Puts the lotion on"
Me: "It puts the lotion on it's skin on else it gets the hose again."
Evie: Cuts to putting all the parts in the basket. 🤭
Oh no! ROFL!
Ouch to the gouged wood! Is it the leg of the wheel that was gouged or the conrod(footman)?
@@JillianEve It was the leg! I seem to have gotten the problem fixed though (knock on wood, lol); the bolt needed an extra nut! (Fortunately, my wife had taken pictures before disassembling her so I was able to figure this out.)
Oh I'm so glad! Happy spinning!
@@JillianEve thank you! ❤️
My dress form is called Edna for exactly the same reason! ❤❤❤
I JUST picked up an Ashford spinning wheel for $100 (I think it’s from the 1980s). I’m an avid knitter for 12 years but I’m looking forward to creating my own yarn.
Congratulations that is a deal! 🧶🐑✨
Yes, put a drip of oil in there, work gently, and patience! Happy spinning!
so excited
My ashford trad is this old and I’m so glad I varnished it, so I can just wipe it down.
Was your flyer rusty? Mine is a bit rusty on the inside where the wool feeds in. I'm trying to figure out how to get the rust out of there 😅
Love your videos! I listen to them well welding.
I just got a 60s model and I love it.
My first Traddy is a 60's model too! 💕
How do you clean the orifice if you spin lots of greasy wool please?
Mrs, Jillian did you say "boiled linseed oil?". Is the linseed oil is the oil that come from the Flax, seeds?. Thank you, so much every drop of help count 🙏🙏
YOU HAVE VERY GOOD HELPER!!! BEAUTIFUL HUSBAND!!!🌷💖🌷
I agree! I'll keep him around! 💕😊
@@JillianEve GOOD FOR HIM!!!HE IS LUCKY!!!🌷🌷💖💖
How do I repair the hub? Please how do I remove the wheel to repair this?
I just cleaned and refinished mine as well (also a 1975 Traddy)! So fun! I adore spinning on it. How come I can get a much finer spin than my Ladybug?
I have a pre 1973 Traditional that looks like yours. It was sitting in someone's living room for decoration.
Thanks!
Oh dear! We soaked it with oil overnight and tapped out the pin. I hope you can get it!
JillianEve thank you...I didn't know if there was a way to get the right length. Fab channel, I am learning so much from you. Thanks
Thank you
