Testing the Go Pro on a dog 'walk'
After our traumatic encounter with the aggressive man with his two aggressive dogs I am going to make sure I have video evidence in the future. This is a test run this morning with Magnus the Magnificent and Sweetie Wheatie Inga, the Scottish Terriers.

With the usual community events cancelled, the farmers of Orkney organised a tractor run round Kirkwall to raise money for two Orkney charities. Their aim was to raise £4,000. The total raised stands at over £34,000. There were more than 180 tractors, of all ages and sizes, dressed with lights. The run took place on public roads, so they all had to use their headlights and orange running lights...

Dyeing with Docks by Elizabeth Lovick
Переглядів 7832 роки тому
Docks, or dochans as they are known in Orkney, have wind-blown seeds which give a rusty red colour on animal fibres )including silk). As this dye needs no mordanting or fixing, it is ideal as an introduction to natural dyeing. As the leaves of the dochan are edible, it is quite safe to do the dyeing in your kitchen. This is an ideal introduction to dyeing for adults and children, but make sure ...

    Curious why do you need the dish soap in the dye? I thought you were going to wash it but then when the dye went in I was confused.

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace День тому

      It is a detergent, and so acts to make it easier for the dye to latch on to the fibre. Also sometimes called a wetting agent. I can give a more chemical explanation of required, but wait a few days as I have very recently come round from a general anaesthetic, and am a bit woozy!!

    I've watched a couple of videos about Canadian Production Wheels and it seems to me that they are not the best choice for a beginner. Is that a fair comment?

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace 9 місяців тому

      It is! It is possible to learn on a CPW - many folk did it in the past - but it will be less frustrating learnin on a modern wheel first. If that is not an option, take plenty of time to learn how to treadle the CPW before you start to get fibre involved. In addition, it would be a good idea to learn to spindle spin before trying the wheel. That will get your hands used to dealing with the fibre. Thinkk about learning to drive a car - the idea is straightforward enough, but it takes time and pratise to get your hands and feet working together!

    Lovely colours and pattern especially the bind off, thanks. I would like very much to attempt to knit this mobius cowl. A question please and for the sake of clarity - my understanding is, this pattern is knitted in the round in “two sections”. One being the needle round and the other, the cable round. Is that correct? Thanks again.

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace 10 місяців тому

      Yes and no! Once you have cast on, you just keep knitting. The cast on becomes the centre of the cowl and 'one round' is actually a round above the centre and a round below the centre. This is much easier to see than put into words! Once you have cast on, the end of the row is marked by your stitch marker. Just think of that marker as the start/finish of one round and you will be fine! Just have faith...!! The cast off is good, isn't it? It just adds a little something, and looks far more complicated than it is!

    And you don’t see the technology you play with do you ... Benjamin Franklin showed me how to generate energy with one of these ...

    • @resourcedragon
      @resourcedragon 9 місяців тому

      The energy is being used to create yarn and wind it onto the bobbin. It's like saying that a windmill that is used to pump water or grind grain into flour could be used to generate energy - the energy is going straight to the job the user wants done. Or think of a solar hot water system - the energy is going straight to heating the water - and it just bypasses the middleman.

    Just yesterday I learned about parlour style knitting and looked for a tutorial today. I found one that also showed how to increase stitch speed, and the lady was using a knitting belt. Then she mentioned a "knitting stick" but didn't elaborate on what it was, so I googled it and this video was in the very first link that wasn't an ad. This video is extremely informative and now I'm on the hunt for a knitting stick of my own. I may even ask my husband to make me one in his woodshop!

    Hi again! Do you have any help how to adjust the tilt tension? The fiber isn’t pulled on the bobbin … even the leader makes pigs tail on the outside of the orifice. Also my wheel doesn’t chatter like yours … would it be how I attached the drive band ? I attached this way … wheel, bobbin , wheel, whorl. The cross is in the bottom . I spin clockwise z twist … hoping to be able to spin … thanks for your input and help !

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace 2 роки тому

      The noise varies from wheel to wheel. Some are quieter than others. From what you say it seems you have got the drive band on right. Have you joined the Ravelry CPW group? They have loads of info, and you can upload photos etc. www.ravelry.com/groups/cpw-lovers

    • @helenedumoulin9092
      @helenedumoulin9092 2 роки тому

      @@NorthernLace i will join the group! Thanks! I still can’t get any yarn to be pulled up on the bobbin … as if I was a beginner spinner… no matter the tension being changed on the tilt tension … no pulled up yarn …

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace 2 роки тому

      @@helenedumoulin9092 The only other simple thing is the drive band. If it is too long it will not turn the bobbin, or if it is too stretchy..... Ask on the Rav group, including photos of the whole flyer set up etc, and we may be able to give you more ideas.

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace 2 роки тому

      Two possibilities. First, have you oiled the bobbinaxel well, so the bobbin can move easily? Second, is the tension high enough? Try tilting the whole flyer assembly away from the wheel - just a bit. Thatsould help.

    • @NorthernLace
      @NorthernLace 4 роки тому

      As the treadling is the same for almost any wheel I thought there was no need for that. As with any wheel, you work out the exact placement of your foor on the treadle, and the speed of the treadling to suit yourslef, your wheel and your fibre. Most CPWs were single treadles, but a few were double.

      I don't know if anyone is making them just now. I would try Etsy, or a reinactor site. As to needles, if you are working in the round, yes, you need long dpns. Try Jamieson and Smith (J&S, Shetland Wool Brokers) or Frangipani. The hole in the top of mine is big enough to take the knob on the end of a straight needle, but they vary. Some will only take a dpn.
