Lorrie Rybaczyk Thank you! I usually listen to faith songs while spinning. I find both to be really good for my soul 😀

Thank you for such a clear explanation of how to do this. My drive band is old and fraying and needs to be replaced right away. Now I understand how.

Hi Jeri! Thank you so much for explaining about the placement of the “X” depending on which direction you’re spinning!
I just got my first spinning wheel and needed to change the drive bands. After watching your video I realized the previous owner had done it incorrectly.
I used Sugar-N-Cream kitchen cotton yarn. The first time I did it, the bands kept jumping off the tracks. I then realized it was probably too loose... so when I redid it, I had someone put their finger on top the way you showed ☝️so I could pull it tightly.. that made all the difference!
Even though my wheel is slightly different (the Wheel has two grooves) your tutorial worked like a charm! Thank you so much 😊!!

CitoyenMundial you are very welcome! I am thrilled this video was helpful! If the drive band still gives you problems, try a thinner cotton cord or a thicker one. Each wheel seems to have a preference. Happy spinning!

I have two Earl Oman wheels in my house! :) Great wheels, aren't they? What a wonderful craftsman he was.

TexasChance58, he was definitely a master craftsman! I love this wheel both for it's beauty and how nicely it spins.

just got my first wheel! it has 2 seperate grooves, will this method still work? this is the only video I have found that explains how to string a double drive :)

Congratulations! Yes, this should work really well as long as you have a double drive wheel. The band doesn’t always sit in the grooves, but as long as it is turning the flier and bobbin and not being thrown off, it is all good 😀 Happy spinning!

My wheel has two grooves around ... I just bought a spinning wheel and don’t know much about spinning but am willing to learn ... does it mean I use a double strand band or single band ...? I don’t even know the difference lol I am googling amd trying to learn ...

You just use one long band. It will go around the large drive wheel twice and once around the flier and once around the bobbin. I hope my video is helpful for you. I don’t get alerts for messages here in a timely manner but I am willing to help you if I can. Enjoy the learning curve and happy spinning!

Question, I just picked up a double drive wheel similar in design to yours but home built back in 1978. It too is a double drive and the wheel has two grooves. I can get the x on either side depending on what direction but I noticed that your wheel only has one wide flat spot for the drive band. Can I assume its OK to run the drive band in a single groove? Im new to spinning but learning. Going to learn to spin Flax as an end goal. Want to try cotton at some point. My drive band is still in excellent condition.

Pete McWade, sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I've been on vacation. Yes, you can run the drive band in a single groove. Usually the band will automatically spread out to match the alignment of the drive wheel and whorl and bobbin groove. I hope this is helpful

Thats ok. I figured it out. My band runs fine in both groves but sometimes it runs in one without any issue. Right now Im using my single drive with Irish Tension to spin up some Llama.

I've converted one of my double drive wheels to single drive with Irish tension. I'm glad you figured it out! Happy spinning!

What brand of drive band do you use?

    • @jerikriddle1767

Lydia Carrico I use cotton crochet thread. You can easily find it in craft stores. Any thin, strong, nonstretchy band will work. Some wheels work better with a little thicker band so you might need to experiment with different ones to get the perfect band for your wheel.
