Good info. I'm interested though, the knot I learned as the GT is the fig 8 with a 6 wrap uni on the other side. It's a low profile knot that has been 100% secure to date for me... Now, I don't suggest my small test results prove anything, but scrolling through the comments, I saw several people saying the same and liking that knot a lot. Thoughts?

    • @jtoker9758

I just did a test and the figure 8 (which was mono in my test) slipped loose from the braid uni knot. Just tie you up the knot, and then use some pliers (one on each end) and pull until something breaks. You don't want the line to break at the knot. I have still yet to find the perfect braid to other line knot that isn't super complicated or hard to tie.

I have been using the GT knot for years. It works fine good knot strength. I never had the opportunity to test the breaking point.
I improved the tying by using the leader to go 9 times through the doubled loop of the main line, and then I tie a figure 8 with the tag end of the leader around and through the main line loop, just like the same way as the correct video #7 shows threading the double loop through the figure 8.
My routine line sizes are 15- 20 lb main line, and 25-30 lb leader. I do find it works better with mono than fluorocarbon.
When I use fluorocarbon leader for a GT knot, I usually try to heat the tag end of the leader line to make it a little thicker after cutting off the tag end, to prevent it from slipping through the figure 8 knot.
When in the scenario of using 40 lb or above leader line, I would use FG knot, as it is difficult to make a snugly figure 8 knot with line thicker than 40 lbs.

Strong Salt'ers, can you please answer this question for me.....why does the double uni knot keep breaking? When I tie these two knots (at least braid to braid), it will break at one of the knots most of the time. Its almost like under deep stress, one of the knots is cinching down on the other line to where it "saws" through it as it gets tighter and tighter. I've seen others mention this same problem on various forums (just a few people) but with no real solution to it. What gives? I know I'm tying the uni knot right. Maybe it could be certain braids? I've had this problem with suffix 832 line if that matters, which is like 8 strands I think.

    • @Saltstrong

At what tension load does this issue take place? All knots will fail once enough tension is applied, so you very well just be putting the max load of tension on it.

The only difference I make is 2 half clinch knots on the braided line after the uni knot. I fish SoCal and Catalina waters. I've caught barracuda, bonito and yellowtail. I'll update if it ever fails me. So it's been good. 17lb to 30 lb fluorocarbon with 20 lb to 80 lb braid.

The GT knot is a great knot when tied correctly
looks like most people unfortunately don’t know how to tie it.
I’ve been using it for about 15years now.
Don’t worry I also love the FG knot as well
I use FG for casting and GT knot for jigging.
The GT knot lasts much longer before it starts to look shabby and needs re doing.
And the natural taper of the knot is much better coming back through the guides if under tension from a fish. FG knot fouls up more coming back in through the guides.
When tied correctly your line will always break at the start of the bimini twist never at the GT knot.
And in regards to it pulling through well I don’t see how that is possible when your using a double/loop in your mainline. it has to snap to pull through when tied correctly.

I unfortunately don't have a device that can test 50 lb braid.
But based on how that knot is designed, I don't see how it could possibly beat the other top contenders like the PR knot or the FG knot because those knots spread the tension load more evenly across a wider area which is what most often creates a stronger breaking strength when comparing knots.

Either of those will work great imo. I use both, except I have a variation in the double uni knot, I tie a jam knot in the main line and uni knot in the leader. Been using it for a very long time. Recently started using an Alberto knot for light tackle because it passes in and out of guides better. They may not be the strongest knots, but they’re plenty strong enough when tied correct. I horsed a 30 lb snook off a structure recently using 15 lb mono mainline and an Alberto knot tied to the leader. Bent a hook out on another larger snook recently with that same knot. Have landed countless tarpon well over 100 lbs from shore using my variation of the double uni knot. No knot holds 100% line strength. So for me, a knot that is reliable that can be tied very quickly and easily in the rain, the dark with no head lamp spooking fish, with sweaty hands, noseeums and mosquitoes gnawing on you, and other conditions is important. I’ve bended out and broken hooks with both knots in the past. Good enough for me.

I've had two (2) failures with the FG knot. It unraveled, in turn, losing expensive lures. I tied those half knots 3 or 4 times at the end on both failures. I am using 40 lb braid to 30 lb mono.
Very upsetting. I watched your earlier remote control tutorial and then your much simpler updated version most recently. Thus, I've been using the GT knot. Probably the wrong one according to your public service announcement above.
I got to tell you, I was mad at you. Just sayin.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  4 роки тому

So sorry to see that you lost two lures. Assuming they flew off during your cast, the issue had nothing to do with the half hitches because the issue was caused by the other side of the knot... the first coil closest to the lure is the most important one. And if you don't cinch it down hard enough and are casting your knot through the guides (which we don't recommend doing), then you run the risk of that first coil getting compromised which then will cause the knot to fail.
Note: The risk of that first coil getting compromised is even greater when using a lighter leader compared to your braid mainline (another thing we don't recommend doing)... may I ask why you're using such a strong braid with just a 30 lb leader? Are you using spinning or bait casting reels?

So I have been Fishing around alot of boulders here in Martha's Vineyard off the beach. Thus the heavier braid for abrasion purposes and lighter leader for visual purposes (Stripper Bass, Bonito, Albie's)...
To your points I was unaware that pulling the FG knot or any knot through the eyes compromised the reliability of it. I don't think you make that clear in your videos.

@@kpnitrl38 We always use a stronger leader than our mainline because that enables the business end to be strongest where the most abrasion is likely to take place (next to the fish) while having a lighter mainline to achieve the best casting distance and feel of strikes. A Slim Beauty for fine lines 👍

What lines are you using? I tried it with 10 lb powerpro to a 30 lb leader, and the Slim Beauty didn't perform very well.

@@alexfranchuk9608 Since you're using a weaker leader relative to your braid, I recommend using a knot that has better support for spreading the load on the fluorocarbon because that's going to be the weak point... the slim beauty just has the figure 8 for the fluoro which doesn't spread the tension load very well.
Instead, I recommend going with a double uni with 7 turns for both sides.

@@Saltstrong thanks Luke. Would you recommend an FG for stronger braid and weaker fluoro? Like 10-14 lb braid to 6-8lb fluoro carbon?
The double uni on a fluoro is chunkier than a figure 8 unfortunately, hence why I use a Slim Beauty.
Love your channel, keep up great work!

@@alexfranchuk9608 I do not recommend the FG knot for connecting a stronger braid to a weaker fluoro (especially a thin fluoro like under 20 lbs) because the braid will have a very tough time digging into the outer layer of the leader line.

No fg knot cronie will ever admit there are better and easier knots. You said you performed a test...where's the video? What was your method?

Here's the video showing the test of the GT knot vs. the FG knot: ua-cam.com/video/qHT44EdJ2Fg/v-deo.html
Please know that we did not create the FG knot nor do we have any ties to it other than simply being impressed by how it has fared in knot tests... as soon as we find a knot that is stronger and easy to tie, we'll be quick to make the change.

@@Saltstrong your test still holds no water. The knots are pre tied. For the record I never claimed you did create the fg. I can think of 4 knots off the top of my head that are easier to tie than fg and perform well, and honestly I have had the fg to slip or break in the knot several times. That along with the time required to retie in a tourney scenario forced me to switch knots. Almost any test favors the opinion of the content creator, I prefer to base my opinion off of real life performance. The fg requires frequent re-ties or the knot fails due to damage caused by braid compromising the surface of the flourocarbon. The knot will fail where the flouro enters the braid. Frequent re-ties of a time consuming knot and tournies do not work.

@@dannylamb9041 You of course are welcome to use whatever knots you want. Just make sure to pick your two favorites and do some break tests on them so you know which one is stronger... all you need to do is tie them on a single strand of line and secure one end to a door knob or fence and pull on the other end until the weakest link breaks... my prediction is that the "GT knot" will break before other good knots like the crazy alberto or double uni.
As for the FG knot having to be retied, I have not experienced that need for re-ties. What lines were you using when you had the fluoro getting damaged from the braid?
