Always pull them down left or right depending on there direction of travel during the fight. If you don't want him to jump. Reel in like crazy if they do jump. That works for me. I like your informational videos. Thanks.
When a bass jumps out of the water, several factors can increase the chance of it breaking loose. I researched this after seeing your bass break loose. Thanks for the great video. 1. **Line Slack**: As the bass jumps, it can create slack in the fishing line. This reduces the tension that keeps the hook set in the fish's mouth, giving the bass a chance to shake free. 2. **Hook Leverage**: The jumping motion can give the bass leverage to dislodge the hook. The violent shaking and head movements during a jump can cause the hook to loosen. 3. **Water Resistance**: In the air, there's no water resistance to restrict the bass's movements, allowing it to thrash more vigorously than it can underwater. 4. **Hook Penetration**: If the hook isn't set deeply or securely, the force and motion of the jump can easily dislodge a shallowly set hook. Maintaining a tight line and keeping pressure on the bass can help reduce the chance of it breaking loose during a jump.
FG is a must. I use a pretty long leader. Only need to retie when it gets short due to tying multiple lures (each one shortens the leader a bit) or, of course breaking off. Braid to leader changed my world with spinning gear. Got tired of twists/ knots in the fluro. No longer an issue. 20# braid to 15# Seagar is the best recipe for every thing I do. Thanks TRF, Keep up the great work.
It is amazing how leader technique changes by fishing style. I enjoy bank angling, large weights, large casts, and thick thick leaders connected the thinnest line we feel comfy with.
This happened to me the other day. You were doing a good job keeping the rod tip low. When the bass jumped, that “dogging” tension on the line from the fish set you up to miss it. I would set my drag even more loose. It creates less opposite tension when that fish comes up to jump
Saw another video where a guy tied the FG knot... if you leave a longer tag at the end, you can burn it with a lighter... that will keep it from fraying. Noticed that on your FG knot. Great video :)
When you feel the bass to jump start cranking as fast as you can so that tension stays tight no matter what's going on because holding your lying down is just going to let your rod tip bounce I know everyone says put your rod tip down when the fish jumps well put it down and crank crank crank
Tip: There’s a tool I use for my FG knots that allows me (with practice) to tie an FG knot in under 5 minutes consistently even while I’m out on my yak. It’s called the Daiichi Knot Assist 2.0. Never thought I’d spend $40 for almost tying tool but it makes it a breeze to tie FG knots. Another UA-camr says the FG is not for light lines but you can go down to a 2# test with it. Definitely worth looking into.
I have seen guys sweep their rod tops left and right, towing the bass into changes of direction. I assume it foils breaking the surface and those lure tossing head shakes. The only other factor I can guess on, is whether you think you rod tip was too stiff or tip was too fast. It seems like keeping tip down is the way to suppress the jump, but right as he does break surface (anyway) the lure gets more lateral throw space because the tip is directly to his side, versus the near-zero left n right jerk of the tip if you had it directly above. Seemed like you were head that way at the break-off. I think bass can shake faster than rod tips can recover. And maybe the fluoro needs to have more stretch? Possibilities!
leaders are also go with braided line because they allow some elastic for the fish. gives him a little stretch. Also good to use with a swivel to keep your line from twisting from a spinning fish.
Four wrap surgeon knot. Small profile, and passes through the guides almost silently, and is super easy and quick to tie, especially in cold weather. I tie on 6-8 feet leader with copoly usually 8 pound to my 50 pound braid. Great vid as usual!
Nice video. These really help new anglers. I’ve been learning all about knots, but haven’t braved the FG knot. I’m still trying to perfect the double uni. Dressing it can be difficult. Thanks!
I think ( and I could be completely wrong) that the term leader comes in part from the textile industry, or may go back even further when textiles/ fabrics were hand woven. It's basically a tow, line, or woven section (which is disposable and cheap) that allows there to be tension on the material you are working with, making it easier to work with, and not lose the valuable material due to distortion/damage. The leader material would be afixed to an anchor on one end and the valuable material started on the other allowing tension to be increased and the valuable material to then be woven. It's carried out throughout the composites industry now, and we use paper leaders to keep tension on the product as it goes through a machine of basic compaction rolls, and then rolled up at the end of the machine. Without that leader, our product wouldn't be able to pass a series of physical characteristics tests required by the customer.

Hey buddy, I just stumbled on your channel and am very impressed with how you make everything so easy to understand, loved the video, and I just subscribed. Great job , keep them videos coming. I will be watching and learning something new 👍
You asked for feedback here so I will say this. Watching a Swindle BassU video he said something that really stuck with me in my fishing. You can't quote Swindle perfectly, but this was the essence, "I don't let the fish take me on a tour of the boat. I'm not leaving the front deck. That don't mean I won't play a fish, but you're not going to see me hanging off the motor catching a fish."
Hey Tyler at 6:40 you say you want the leader knot outside of the reel. Totally not at all saying your wrong but when I go to Lake Erie or ultra clear water places I sometimes use 20 foot leaders. With the FG knot I’ve found I can do it perfectly fine 👍. But you also said it causes some damage to your leader line itself and I’ve also had this problem but only on certain reels, sometimes the line guide on the reel has some play and I’ve found that on certain reels yes the leader line rubs against it and causes some damage. But I’ve just played around with other reels that I like until I find one that has no play or “space” for your line to dig into 👍 just thought I might be helpful 🤷♂️. I’ve only found very few reels that do this ands it’s usually the lower end ones that cause some of the damage. Not to call out any brands but I had an abu Garcia Revo S and I had that problem with it, but that’s the only so far

I've been fishing for 25 years of my life and I actually prefer the double uni knot for that reason actually. Because if I have a really strong monster fish on there and I'm using heavier braid I'd rather break a leader with lure on it. Instead of run the possibility of breaking a $70 to $80 rod because my braided line won't break. Of course I was taught to go by diameter of braided line in equivalent to monofilament instead of actual lb test which is why I run that possibility in the first place. But it's just the system that has always worked for me because when I first started using braided line the technology just wasn't there. And braided line back then would actually break at far less then what it was actually rated for back in the day. So everyone just went by diameter in equivalent to monofilament instead so it's just kind of a force of habit at this point.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the trend of micro and midi guides. I find that these (even the midi guides) make it very difficult to fish with a leader on bait caster gear. My first midi guide (Shimano SLX) I had either significant or partial impact from the guides affecting my cast ( FG Knot getting stuck in the guides). When using a swivel or swivel clip for spinners etc would you recommend braided line on the reel with a double uni knot to a couple feet of your fluoro (enough to go from reel to the tip of you rod) then tie on the swivel and more fluoro to your spinner? Or just tie the swivel to the braid then fluoro to your spinner?
@@TylersReelFishing Thanks! Just worried about line twist with spinners. New with braid to fluoro. Tend to target stocker trout here in WA. Working my way into bass and using crankbaits etc
Im curious your opinion (or anyone’s for that matter) sometimes I like to take my ultralight set up out, and I usually use 4 or 6 lb braid, would it be beneficial to still use a leader where the diameter is so small, I do have 2lb mono and flouro line that I used before switching to braid so I could use that as a leader on the 4 or 6lb but I’m wondering if it really matters at that point because the line is so small, the braid I use is medium/dark blue line
Dude this happend to me yesterday. I had a bass on the bank and I didn't have my net so I had to grab my line by hand..15lb braid to 10lb mono and he snapped my leader knot. And back flipped into the water, literally. I was so upset..so now I have a bass somewhere with a fluke jr and good 12inch leader somewhere swimming around. The only knot I can tie consistently without fear of it failing is the palomar. Could you tie a swivel to the braid using a palomar. Then tie florocarbon leader to the other end of the swivel using the palomar as well?

The dark part of the lake is the only place I can catch fish and I have tried jerkbaits spinnerbaits chatterbaits and Texas rigs. You name it. What can I do? Thanks
Hey Tyler: You can split the difference. The Alberto knot is easier to tie than the FG knot and stronger than the double uni-knot. On all my spinning reels, braid as main line works amazing with this knot as braid-to-fluoro leader knot. Learned it from these two videos ua-cam.com/video/WgUilEfdGO4/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/roHMWeL9yCQ/v-deo.html
Sometimes it doesn't matter how tight u can keep the line, when they jump, if it doesn't hook them where the hard parts n deep, it'll come off.. had my fare share.
Dont let them get within 3 feet from the surface within in that is their response to jump, as the fish comes closer to you drop your rod and wind it to you not up to you.
What's your opinion on swivels? Are there advantages and disadvantages for using them for your leader vs just knotting the lines together? Or are they more of a specialized use?
I never use a swivel. They are clunky, and if you reel them through your guides it’s gonna destroy em. It’s also 2 knots (one to each side of the swivel), so more to go wrong. The swivel also sinks at that point, so it will make your line have a weird bow in it underwater. Just don’t do it haha, there are no advantages to swivels over a good leader knot
When you feel he's about to jump lower the rod level so the jump is also low and close to the water. Reducing the amount of time the fish has to toss head side to side out of water.
Not at this line size. With 50lb braid and 20lb fluoro yes that knot would impact casting distance. But a double uni or FG on 15lb braid to 10lb fluoro will have little to no effect
The worst reality in fishing..... big (and small) fish will get off. My best bass shook a chatterbait right at the boat and it was a horrible fishing. Keep making awesome videos. They have been a huge help for me personally. As for connecting knot, I go with the Royal Polaris knot. Has yet to fail me fighting fish.

Great insights! I have heard good things about the Alberto, but never really looked into it
Sometimes it doesn't matter how tight u can keep the line, when they jump, if it doesn't hook them where the hard parts n deep, it'll come off.. had my fare share.
Dont let them get within 3 feet from the surface within in that is their response to jump, as the fish comes closer to you drop your rod and wind it to you not up to you.
Rod tip up my guy! Gravity is your friend when they jump.
@@TylersReelFishing Awesome, good to know! I had heard a little about them but was unsure, thanks for the info!
Great Video! How long does it take to perfect the fg knot, oh and does it effect your casting distance.
I can do one in like 5-7 mins haha. Yes, you get more distance, but to me it is about the strength
oh alright sounds good I'm gonna have to learn that
Best thing about Ugly Sticks is their durability as well as great price
You think you would every come to NorCal cause I got some good spots
He might not be but I’m down I’m always looking for new spots to fish 🙌🏽
Great info 👍
Man, that was a big bass! Is that Travis?
Yes!
Loosen the drag, don’t horse them unless you’ve got the gear ie rod and reel. Also rod tip down. I’m a fairly new angler and these what I focus on.
Yea.he new it was gonna break , and still yanked
how long do u make the flourocarbon leader
😎 nice shades! 👍🏼
The best!
Great video i love the channel
I appreciate it a ton!
Additional tip: Asset domanince with a steel leader when your all out of leader line.
Haha
Maybe a video on the Tokoyo rig sir
When you feel he's about to jump lower the rod level so the jump is also low and close to the water. Reducing the amount of time the fish has to toss head side to side out of water.
I did that though…
Thanks for the vid man keep it up 😃
If fishing in clear water, would you use a fluro leader to catch bass even when there are known presence of pikes?
Yep! Pike are gonna snap you off if they are set on that, no matter what line you got (except steel)
I like those glasses! Where ya get them
Can you do a video on when and why to use a snap swivel
I don’t use one
...why are some lines called Leader line? What makes them different to be designated as such?
You sir have a new subscriber
That’s awesome! So glad to have you around!
Where did the fish break at? Did he spit the hook? Was it the knot at the hook? Or was it your connection knot
Spit the hook, did not break off
I’m horrible at tying my knots, and learning them. So my question to you is can I use a swivel, to attach to the braided line from the leader?!
No don’t do that. Learn knots
@@TylersReelFishing I tried t the double uni knot and it just comes apart! 😤😢
@@TylersReelFishing okay so my question to you is what lb test line should I use for 15 lb braid? I think I mastered the double uni knot! 😅
Does the knot for leader impact the cast as it goes through the eyes
Not at this line size. With 50lb braid and 20lb fluoro yes that knot would impact casting distance. But a double uni or FG on 15lb braid to 10lb fluoro will have little to no effect
Do fish see the line itself or the shadow the line casts?
Wish I had the answer! I’d assume it’s the line. Thin thin fluoro doesn’t cast much of a shadow
Hey tyler I use the gt knot...super strong and easy. You should try it
I’ll check it out for sure!
Wassup Tyler!
What length do you use?
When you fishing on Gibson again. That’s the lake I fish on and saw you caught zero last time. Redemption video???
I don’t think I ever got zeroed on Gibson... at least from what I remember haha
Good advice
Can a leader be heavier than the main line , and will it help catch bigger fish .... Lets say 15 lb main line and 30 lb leader ?
I mean, it can be. But that doesn’t make much sense. Maybe for longer casting distance if you never reel in the leader?
