Love the FG knot! With my old arthritic fingers now I always use the Knot Assist 2.0 ever since I found your video on the proper way to use it. Thank you for all of your fantastic videos! Tight lines and all the best to you!
I like them both. I prefer the FG when tying at home and the SC when tying on the fly. I see the benefits of the FC but I'm just unable to keep the right amount of tension when not at home. I like your video for being short, very easy to follow your points and easy to see, how to diy.
On all the FG knot videos there are so many comments about how difficult the knot is to make and how it takes longer to tie it. With all knots you need to practice. For me a FG knot now is very simple to tie and takes me about 2 and half minutes to tie. It has never failled me. You are 100% correct when you say the SC knot slips on ligter lines. Tried it with 10lb mono and 10lb braid and it keeps on slipping.
have been tying an fg on my popper rod for a while now, had a serious play around with the sc knot, but found it was very prone to slippage, 80lb 8 carrier braid mainline to 100-120lb leader.
I agree with the SC know slipping with lighter lines, but I have found a trick that works for me. I use YGK braid in either .6 (14lb), or 1.2 (25lb), which is very thin and slick, and 6lb-14lb fluorocarbon. After you wrap the braid around the flouro, very lightly snug the knot, just so it holds. Then I grab the mainline braid and pull the knot tight. If I do this the knot usually locks in and is solid. I hope this helps.
Thank you! Very informative, lots of good details. I appreciate your camera and editing work, it helps a lot when one can actually see what you are doing along with your explanation of what you are doing. Your explanation of the mechanics of the knots was very helpful! Also, your choice braid and leader lbs. is what I use. Many other videos demonstrate with much higher lbs. line/leader, like for deep sea/big game fishing, but I needed to see how the knots worked and what they looked like side by side on line that I actually used. Thanks!
wow, i found the way he did his FG knot to be the easiest to follow compared to actual FG knot tutorials...my first few have come out BEAUTIFULLY just by slowing this vid down a touch and copying what he does! thanks JP!!
Hey JP, we’ll done. I’m glad this knot is gaining some traction. I’ve been using it for a couple years now and was lucky enough to discover it coming out of Southeast Asia soon after it was developed. I think no question the fg is the best “easy” leader knot (PR bobbin is king, but is in a class of its own for the obvious equipment and skills needed to tie it). However, as I’ve been tying an fg for several years and still only get a good knot every 4th ish time for whatever reason (clumsy hands, maybe my dyslexia, getting sea sick, who knows) the SC is my main connection knot now. It is thicker than an fg, but only marginally so when compared to a uni to uni, a bimini to a Yucatán or no name, and even an Alberto or Albright. One thing you can try with thin and slick braid or hard floro is more wraps. I know a concern with wrapping too many times with an fg is the front doesn’t get tight, I’ve noticed that because this knot slips so much when tying that when I use slick braid, hard floro, or a significant difference between lb tests, think 8-10lb braid to 30 or 40 leader, that using 30+ wraps or more even the knot completely cinches down unlike an fg. Especially when you take your time and learn how to dress the knot as you’re tying. Maybe worth a shot…
Additionally, after fishing this thing for a while I’ve noticed that where the tag of the leader gets passed through the loop can get hot and weaken due to friction because you need an almost 90 degree angle to tighten. It like binds a little or something and when learning to tie it the only failures I had were like an inch behind the finish on the main line. When tying the night before or on the boat I use just a small amount, like less than a dab of chap stick right there at the loop (just slightly too much causes the knot to slip during tightening no matter how many wraps), and that problem is completely eliminated.
Great breakdown and I agree on a bunch of that. The FG is 100% effective for me and it could be because I have been tying it since 2016 and have learned to cinch it as I was having the odd failure early on.
Excellent presentation. I use wine bottle style corks to tighten my knots. Wrap each line around the corks without overlapping and pull like heck. I'm nervous about tightening using the spools with line possibly cutting into itself?
If you tie an overhand knot (or two) in the braid tag leftover from the rizzuto it won’t end up getting fluffy, and will catch on the lump if the braid does slip for some reason
You are the first person who I have heard state that they are using the FG knot on very light braid to very light fluorocarbon line. I was wondering if I was the only one doing that on light spinning reels for high mountain trout. I cast very light jigs and lures and the braid gives me a huge advantage over straight fluorocarbon and the FG goes right trough my guides so I can use longer leaders. I can't tie the FG on windy days though because I have old eyes and can't see what I am doing so I tie the knots in an enclosed space and use a magnifying glass that loops around my neck and rests on my chest. Thanks for the video!
I do the exact same thing for crappie down here in the south using 10lb powerpro to 8lb mono leaders. Using the "salt strong" method of tying really helped me with the FG's. Seems to take more tension on the mono and less on the braid to get the wraps to not wad up on lite lines for me. I was gonna try to tie the FG to a tapered fly tippet on one of my spinning reels for a Colorado fishing trip this summer. Figured it would be easier to make the FG knot on tapered diameter but have the benefit of the small diameter for tying on flies.
I like to do a finish the fg with a few hitches, then cut the leader tag, and then do the rizzuto finish over just my braid mainline. It buries the tip of that flouro into the rizzutto too so there is absolutely none sticking out the back
Great informative video. I tie it basically the same way. The only thing I do different is I clip the leader about a mm or two from the knot and cover it with a few 1/2 hitches then finish with the Rizzutto finish. For me it seemed to keep the knot together better when casting a long leader that has to pass through the guides. Thanks for the video. Definitely one of the best knot vid’s I’ve seen.👍🏼
Yea my half hitches kept coming loose, lost a 12 euro bait because of it just last week and actually made me not use the fg knot anymore, will give it another try now
G’day JP from Down Under. I share the same enthusiasm for the FG as yourself, but a point I’d like to make about the Rizzuto finish (which I’m not a fan of in this case) is that it makes the tag stand proud/perpendicular to the knot. Probably ok in heavier saltwater applications, but when fishing light rods with micro guides i think it’ll slow the line speed on the cast. I use the half-hitch method, but I don’t lock it as you end yp having the leader tag stand proud of the knot (even worse). 10-12 hitches on light PE (0.4 to 0.8) will do the job and still keep things tidy, and also give enough insurance if 1 or 2 hitches unravel (still leaving a short tag lying parallel to the main line). Anyway, thanks again for your great content and look forward to your next Shimano updates around iCast. Cheers 👍
Appreciate the feedback. I have never had an issue with the perpendicular braid tag especially since I throw a lot of light braid (5lb and 8Lb) I just find the Risutto with the tag end stays locked for good for me.
I bass fish and regularly tie the FG and even do it on the boat while spot-locked into the wind and waves and after you practice the FG and then tie a bunch it gets easy and quick and it’s the only knot I’ll do!! I can easily do a 6lb flouro to 10lb braid no issues!
I just tested a SC knot with 8lb super slick braid to 8lb vanish fluorocarbon, and I have to agree that the initial tightening is key before you serve the knot. On my second attempt, I got the knot to bite and it held VERY well. I think I will be using the SC knot for all my future light braid to fluoro unions, just because I don't want issues that I've had with the blood knot on fluoro.
My FG knot fails on 8lb super slick on snags (not fish) but I’ve never had a failure on my 10lb J8…. Makes me think the coating on the super slick makes it…. well…. Super slick 😂
Good video, been using FG know for years and I'm satisfied enough with it. One thing I would like to see you do a video on is tying an FG know (and tightening/serving it) with line less than 6 pound test without breaking the line.
Uncle John here Joh. Paul , F G is the knot I used in my home in Englewood Florida. I used 10 braid and 15 lbs mono in my Big Fish Kayak. I have found FS knot to have failed
Love how you walk us through this. I can’t get my knot to ever bite. I’m using 10lb braid to 8lb fluoro. I tie it exactly like you do and it slips every single time. :(
@@JPDeRoseOutdoors the SC. I’ve only been able to get the FG knot to work once and the SC looks so much easier to tie, but I can’t get it to bite ever.
I love all of the comparisons between the SC vs FG videos on YT… I don’t think it honestly matters because my drag is going nuts way before it breaks the knot.
I like to put the rizzuto finish after the cut end of the fluoro so it ramps up to it. This helps it go through the guides easier. That said, I prefer the sc knot because I have a better success rate with it. Have had a few fg knots slip off and lose lures because I screwed it up without knowing it. With the sc knot I find it's always on tight. Never had to redo them.
Gotta learn the method for the FG where u don't need tension and u actually wrap the braid around the flouro. Game changer! Very even and best looking FG I have ever seen and super fast
Doesn’t pulling on your spinning reel excessively bend your shaft? Or even pulling on a bait cast reel bend your axle? Would it be safer to use a rubberized stick to wrap the mainline braid and nut pull on your reel and bend your shaft or axle.
When trimming the tag end of the fluorocarbon (after doing the rizzuto finish), are you not afraid that it could slip? I always leave maybe ~3mm of the fluorocarbon tag end but it seems to get caught on my guides. If you have no problem with trimming the fluorocarbon all the way, then please let me know.
To my knowledge, the FG is the only knot that doesn't require a double (loop) in one of the lines to secure them together. That, of course, is why there is a difference is size, though both of them are fairly small. Many other knots will have a double in both lines and those knots, when pulled together, make for a short, but "lumpy", finish. By the way, I recently saw a video of a guide tying an FG knot with no tension. His reasoning is that he can tie it in a moving boat in the wind using only his fingers.
I fish inshore where big leaders are needed around piers and pilings. No need for FG , big line allows me to use a simple surgeons knot it absolutely doesn't get any easier than 10 seconds and I'm fishing again . Big drum and reds and snook no problem. But i use FG in fresh water with the renzetti finish.
I like the FG so much ,not because it's the strongest knot but because it's the slickest knot! However with this "resudo finish" their end is equal. Half hitching it thee times both then cut the floro and finish it with more half hiches. Like this I hide the end of the florocarbon. And my FG is incomparably slick 😉 Test it if you like.
don't forget that the braid section of the SC knot is also doubled over so in stead of 30lb its actually 60lb on the knot section. I've cut my hand trying to pop a SC knot from rocks when fishing the jetties.
Well, considering the FG is a smaller diameter knot, it's obviously superior for tying longer leaders. Sure the SC might be slightly easier for a beginner due to there being less tension involved in the wrapping of the knot, but when your tying longer leaders it's ALL about knot diameter and castability.
I use only SC knot because I find it easier to do than FG and I have never had to complain on big fish. I don't know about small lines because I don't really use it but I do a double half inch knot before doing the D loop... I do 6 to 8 wrap on the D loop. Also I cut fluoro tag end before tightening the knot. Except that we do the sane and SC knot is always stronger than your braid to my opinion
Im sure purists wont agree but i put a simple overhand knot in the leader as a stopper and then slide the sc down onto it before really sinching it down hard and then finishing it. Hasnt broken at that point yet and stops the leader from ever slipping!
The pr knot tied with a bobbin.is the strongest knot. It's a genuine 100% knot. The fg knot is a 70% knot. Sometimes 90% sometimes 50%. Although our leader is always a greater breaking strain than the mainline in New Zealand

i am first and foremost a 'string' guy, i love cordage of all types kinds sizes colors makes all of it, string is the coolest thing i think man has done next to steel, i developed a hammock suspension knot (tootoot) almost on accident, but never got into fishing when i was young. i just got my first baitcaster, (oh boy what an educational adventure that has become) and so need a good braid to fluorocarbon leader knot and have been searching around for how to not suck at it. the 'rizzuto' finish that you showed makes perfect sense as to why it is indeed superior and i will be trying that going forward. do you have a tut on the fg, your explanation style meets my need for detail very well and i look forward to actually learning the fg knot (despite your fat fingers, which were in the way a little but only for the rizutto finish part and i understand that anyway) much thanks.
If you’re referring to the Risutto finish, I am technically unwrapping the top side of the twists in the D Loop until there are no more twists remaining. That why I use the word unwrap. You are basically undoing the loops you just created with the tag end
@@JPDeRoseOutdoors I'm talking about the finish you used for the SC knot. Also, I wish you would re-shoot this video using the close-up camera techniques this dude employed. ua-cam.com/video/HEgHWuKlGa4/v-deo.html
There’s a faster way to tie the FG knot using your pinky. Wrap the braid around your right pinky to hold tension. Then take leader line and make your over unders back n forth 8-10 x, finish it with at least two half hitches. It becomes super easy. I’ve even done them on the boat with ease.not to mention using your teeth anytime will damage your teeth enamel little by little.
This was my first time tying the SC and wanted to see its size and compare the two. I knew from other tests the FG is stronger so that wasn’t what I was after
I was unaware there was a formulation difference in leader and mainline material. I assumed the only reason leader material was even available was so that people could buy a smaller amount instead of having to purchase an entire spool. Is this common knowledge and I've just been in the dark??
Thank you JP, I find the FG a little tricky to tie on lighter mainline leader combo. Getting it to bite is sometimes challenging. On the boat I give up and go Uni to Uni or use my fly fishing knot tool to get back to fishing. Let’s face it, most knots will have larger breaking strength numbers than a 5 lbs leader and 8 lbs braid🤷
I use straight fluorocarbon. Eliminating any faulty knots. Less breakoffs. Had more success with landing fish. Plus less visible to the fish with the microfiber. Leaders are to much hype, and over emphasized. Just my thoughts.....
thank you for this video, but you can depend on SC just make it 27 to 30 . it’s thicker than FG that’s true but it’s faster to tie in any condition, at least keep it the second knot or plan B 👍
FG never fails.. using it for about 5..6 yrs maybe ..? Not once! Use on every rod I have except frog and punch/ flip..even cranking.. 30 to 12 or 16.. never fails.. ultralight 10 braid to 4/6 flouro for trout… hooks always buried.. hardly Ever lose a good fish…hooks never just fall out like using a flimsy cranking rod and mono or flouro… too much stretch
I just can't invest the amount of time it takes to tie the FG knot. It may be the ultimate in terms of breaking strength, but there are lots of other knots that I tie that are infinitely easier and have not caused me any problems with respect to breakage.
As soon as he said "half hitches will come undone", I left. I use two half hitches for the last 20 years and they have never come undone. Not sure what his ultimate recommendation was but there still is no replacement for the FG.
The Risutto finish is 1000 times better than half hitches, alternating or not as half hitches do come undone unless you glue them. My recommendation was FG is superior in every way.
@@JPDeRoseOutdoors Appreciate the response but I've yet to have half hitches come undone on a FG and that tag end that you leave on the Risutto completely eliminates this from being used in light line scenarios and absolutely forget ever using this for ultralight techniques. The guides on the rods are just too small in diameter IMO.
Wait hold on, why are you tying 5lb braid to 6-8 lb fluorocarbon, aren't you supposed to make your leader slightly less pound test due to the difference in diameter between braid and Mono/Fluoro. Furthermore, you don't wanna snap your braid end when your fishing with leaders due to the fact braid (especially PowerPro) costs an arm and a leg so you wanna waste as little braid as possible - Avid Crappie Fisherman
I have never broken my braid when tying to 5 lb. 5 lb power pro actually breaks at close to 15 lbs on average. With an FG knot, diameter has no bearing on the knot strength or connection quality either.
@@JPDeRoseOutdoors yeah but your missing my point say you tie 10lb mono to 10 lb braid, your gonna end up with a way thicker knot that want fly through the guides as easily when casting. It especially makes a difference when you tie on 15-20 foot leaders, if I did that I would be losing way more braid from it getting frayed because I tend to fish a lot of heavy cover, those jokers on boats needa stop droppin those damn brush piles right by the shore.
Who was tying the FG Knots? The breaking strength never varies for me with all the testing. If you tie it right, your breaking strength is what the fluoro is.
Appreciate it Samantha. She using heavier pound tests (especially leader material) there is a very easy way to tie the FG using the line wrapped around your fingers, but for light and supple leaders I have been am doing it this way for about 7 years now and it’s pretty quick. I just tend to slow things down for the camera so as not to lose a viewer. I will definitely check out the video you mentioned!
Indeed a most informative deliery, thank you. Shimano's okay, but why not take a minute or two to set things up so viewers dont have to fight in "visual-reverse" and learn process through your eyes? Strap the cam head your head. Only reason I did not hit subscribe.

They are both great 👍🏼
I use the FG knot for all my leader to braid, best knot ever.
Saludos amigo desde México.
Grated show!!! 😉
Good vid, man. Thank you.
Well, considering the FG is a smaller diameter knot, it's obviously superior for tying longer leaders. Sure the SC might be slightly easier for a beginner due to there being less tension involved in the wrapping of the knot, but when your tying longer leaders it's ALL about knot diameter and castability.
Agreed whole heartedly
For the SC knot Before the risutto finish did u do a half hitch like the fg? Or straight away risutto finish without a half hitch?
Yes, half hitch to lock it in place so you can tighten the knot and take your hands off it.
If it works for you, then keep doing it!
Improved Alberto is the way to go so easy better than uni to uni
Newbie here. Thanks for this informative video.
The pr knot tied with a bobbin.is the strongest knot. It's a genuine 100% knot. The fg knot is a 70% knot. Sometimes 90% sometimes 50%. Although our leader is always a greater breaking strain than the mainline in New Zealand
Thanks for sharing but I have big problem in FG which is a nightmare for me
Practice makes perfect with the FG. trust me, I had some issues when I first started tying it as well
@@JPDeRoseOutdoors I did a FG knot yesterday landed 8 Peacock bass 40cm above no problem 👍🏻
@@gusmiao889 it will only keep getting better as you keep using it!
@@JPDeRoseOutdoors Hi yesterday the knot I have tie tested on a 21kg Chao Phraya catfish fighting it for over 40mins strong as forever 💪🏼
attached the link, tks for sharing the knot.

i am first and foremost a 'string' guy, i love cordage of all types kinds sizes colors makes all of it, string is the coolest thing i think man has done next to steel, i developed a hammock suspension knot (tootoot) almost on accident, but never got into fishing when i was young. i just got my first baitcaster, (oh boy what an educational adventure that has become) and so need a good braid to fluorocarbon leader knot and have been searching around for how to not suck at it. the 'rizzuto' finish that you showed makes perfect sense as to why it is indeed superior and i will be trying that going forward. do you have a tut on the fg, your explanation style meets my need for detail very well and i look forward to actually learning the fg knot (despite your fat fingers, which were in the way a little but only for the rizutto finish part and i understand that anyway) much thanks.
found it
Thank you! Here is a link to me doing the FG. ua-cam.com/video/HqWDttFjP2w/v-deo.html
I have a huge problem with JP using "unwrap" to describe what he's doing at around 7:00 . . . . because he's not unwrapping the line.
If you’re referring to the Risutto finish, I am technically unwrapping the top side of the twists in the D Loop until there are no more twists remaining. That why I use the word unwrap. You are basically undoing the loops you just created with the tag end
Yeah that confused me too, there was no close up of how this unwraping was done either.
Why did you not tie each knot to the same piece of fluoro and do a pull test to see which one was stronger???
This was my first time tying the SC and wanted to see its size and compare the two. I knew from other tests the FG is stronger so that wasn’t what I was after
Thanks for sharing master....
😂
I agree
I have a problem with my tag end coming undone with the fg
Are you closing with a Risutto finish?
I was unaware there was a formulation difference in leader and mainline material. I assumed the only reason leader material was even available was so that people could buy a smaller amount instead of having to purchase an entire spool. Is this common knowledge and I've just been in the dark??
Not many know about it as most manufacturers don’t market it. SUNLINE has always done a good job of explaining each of their lines characteristics
Knowing how hard to pull on 5lb can be challenging!
FG absolutely
I use straight fluorocarbon. Eliminating any faulty knots. Less breakoffs. Had more success with landing fish. Plus less visible to the fish with the microfiber. Leaders are to much hype, and over emphasized. Just my thoughts.....
thank you for this video, but you can depend on SC just make it 27 to 30 .
it’s thicker than FG that’s true but it’s faster to tie in any condition, at least keep it the second knot or plan B 👍
Appreciate it. I am sticking with the FG because we so often use very light (sub 10lb) mainlines and leaders and the SC does not cinch well on them.
@@JPDeRoseOutdoors that’s true , SC with this range is not recommended.
My sc knot keeps slipping...
Most likely not cinching it down tight enough.
SC = Yucatan yes ?
Not sure. I have never done a Yucatan knot before
Agree. FG for me. Caught many GTs and Tuna. Never had one fail. I have tied the SC but don't trust it. Like, I trust the FG.
Slow down to fast 8:13 8:17
Can’t under stand slow down
FG never fails.. using it for about 5..6 yrs maybe ..?
Agreed. It's worth the extra effort in my opinion l, especially if you fish a variety of weight lines
Fg is the final boss of knots
I just can't invest the amount of time it takes to tie the FG knot. It may be the ultimate in terms of breaking strength, but there are lots of other knots that I tie that are infinitely easier and have not caused me any problems with respect to breakage.
It’s not about breakage for me, it’s about casting performance more than anything. Being a 100% breaking strength knot is just a major bonus.
FG knot is the better knot for me, get a knot assistant tool and tie it faster.
greetings come again seniors to listen
Fg Knot all the way
I mean....Great!!!!
Finger error. 😅
Watch “pelagic pursuit” on the easier way to tie an FG knot.
Its a killer, FG knot was sent in to IGFA TESTED OUT against other braid to floro knots
Results were as low as 44,%to as high as 84,%
Who was tying the FG Knots? The breaking strength never varies for me with all the testing. If you tie it right, your breaking strength is what the fluoro is.
1min its enough for Fg. And fg still best knot
The FG is a lot better I use it all the time
There’s a better way to tie a FG knot without having to lean your rod
do yourself a favour and check out FG knot in under a minute it looks a lot less complicated than you think
Check out pelagic pursuit fg knot on UA-cam. does it a totally different way to what I do, but so easy it's less than a minute to tie it.
