I actually keep 1 or 2 RCIR rations in my cupboard as emergency food stocks. They are solid, tasty and hearty rations and made with quality and flavour in mind. Absolutely worth double what I’d pay for any other ration pack. The reason they are so good, of course, is because french food is generally so good and so you can’t feed the French substandard food - they need a taste of home!
Yeah I don't think she'd be able to eat that much lol, 3600 calories is about what my friend eats a day and he's 6'3 235 lbs and he works out 4-5 days a week
Hello from my small village is SW France. The cereal you ate is super common here. I do find things to be less sweet, even the chocolate things and baked things. I’m currently baking cookies, using an American recipe and my my husband and I both found them so sweet! Much love from an American expat in Gensac!
In US rations its typically a very small roll of "sanitary tissue" or TP in a brown paper package. Its basically enough TP for one trip to the restroom. But thats in an individual ration (single meal) vs a full day ration like reviewed here. And you get one with every meal. Its not resealing but most US rations do include a plastic bag for trash or to use to waterproof leftovers. This ration seems more like a general tissue, meaning sanitary (bathroom) and other purpose combined.
High moral is great to have. More likely they will do better than if the moral is low and they cant focus on the task at hand. A lot more avoidable mistakes are made. A lot of times they have to eat items separately and its all high in calories. Which is great for how many they burn. Small amounts of food that fill you up, doesnt weigh much and is easy to headlt or not and consume quickly. Id say thats pretty practical. Not being rude, just pointing it out. My dad was in the military for almost 40 years. He hated these but he also had to eat a lot of them each time he was deployed over seas. So i dont blame him for hating them.
I’m just annoyed that she didn’t correctly consume the ‘cup a soup’ since it should be poured into a cup and filled with lots of cold boiling water (hot, just off the boil) and Emmy only added a tiny bit of water, which is why the consistency was ‘gluey’ according to Emmy. I hope she adds more water next time and pours it into a cup, it’s a drinkable soup and should not be in a bowl with a spoon.
@@Kimdah_ I see what you're saying, but a big reason she puts some of those foods into bowls is so we, the viewers, can better see the actual product. As for the amount of water she added, I didn't catch if she added the amount recommended on the package or just sort of winged it, but it definitely could have used more.
TY love how you review these MRE to recipes. However, you’re always so good at describing the taste, textures and how ingredients interact in dishes to biscuits/crackers
It's funny how as a french high school student I ate a very similar breakfast as the army ration one every morning. Muesli and coffee at home and pate de fruit and cereal bars in the bus. All of the products in the video really are authentic french ones 😄
Missed opportunity: making a s’more with the nougat, chocolate biscuit, and chocolate bar. Extra points if she can figure out how to do it on that mini stove
Oh no... Noigat would not really be good in this. It's heavily honey based and is not really the texture of nougat you see in chocolate bars. Rather, melt the chocolate and crumble up the biscuits to make cake ;)
This truly seems like one of the best rations you've tasted. Compact and with good variety. A good moral booster, which is very important when these are needed.

"It's like Handy Snacks" Prepackaged foods were mostly a not going to find here in my home growing up but of course seeing all of our friends get them we would beg for Handy Snacks, Hostess cakes & Dunkaroo's. I remember being at the store with my mom when I was about 10 & had some birthday $ & bought a 4 pack of Handy Snacks so excited that I'd get to take them in my lunch. The next day I excitedly cracked into one & was anticipating a flaky buttery cracker like Ritz & a silky cheddar flavored cheese so was a bit surprised when the little red spreader almost bent when I tried scooping the cheese & felt a grainy texture. I spread it on the cracker that I could feel was very hard but still excited I took my first bite & while I had been expecting to hear angels singing what I didn't expect was to freeze with an overwhelming urge to spit it out. They were awful & I was so confused as to why all my friends loved them. I was raised to never waste food & I'd spent my $ on this so I managed to eat the entire thing relieved it was done but then remembering I had 3 more at home. What I also had 3 more of at home were siblings. I decided to very generously gift them each one for the next day & hoped maybe they would like them. I didn't get any complaints or poundings from my two older siblings but I did notice that they never once asked for Handy Snack again. We still never gave up on the desert cakes & did get them one time because my mother got a free box with coupon. For some reason we loved those.
To this day, instant coffee reminds me of my paternal grandmother. She only drank 1 cup per day, and she said it was a waste to make a percolator for just 1 cup. She saved real coffee for when she had company. We love to camp, but my husband hates instant and always brews real coffee. I can only smell it all, because I’m allergic to coffee, but I love smelling coffee, funny how Starbucks doesn’t smell like coffee!
I absolutely hate the taste of coffee. I'm a tea drinker through and through, while my husband is a coffee drinker. I freaking love the smell of coffee, but not the taste, so I often steal his mug to sniff.
It's true though, without morale your army won't succeed. You have to take care of your people if you want your people to take care of you. As far as Napoleon's strategic thinking, I can't really say much on that. LOL

Fair trade coffee in a ration, that’s great! It’s fun for me as an American who’s been living in France for most of my adult life to finally see a French ration! The tuna would be the appetizer and the cheese would follow the main course before desert. 😄
Crazy how other countries give their soldiers actual meals meanwhile we give them glorified lunchables and what’s essentially high school cafeteria food
The Swiss army doesn’t even have rations; all food is cooked fresh. (Of course, it’s an army that hasn’t seen combat in 600 years, but practices diligently nonetheless!)
I mean we actually fight so I imagine most of the money goes to the guns. No shade to France but they’re much more peaceful more money to spend on food.

@@Mar-velousMarlenak8 Yes, it is a major factor, but I remember as a teenager here in Ireland, the army put this poster in our school of the load out (weapons, ammunition, equipment, uniform, armour) of an army grunt, and it looked really cool. Probably more effective then where they came to our school and set up a recruitment / advertising the army, stand in our school, at least twice that I can remember during my school years. I was talking to them and they got me into a conversation asking me about tactics. As in giving me scenarios and asking how I would react, to it, like crossing an uncovered area under enemy observation. But watching war movies was also a great way to drive me to it. Plus, a bunch of guys from my school year where signing up to the reserves as soon as they where legally able to here in Ireland (17) and the regular military (18). The only reason why I didn't sign up is because my mom told me that I would be thrown out of the house if I did, and then I felt God tell me, No, that this wasn't the plan that he had for me. That's not to say that I'm anti military. I'm not. For many people it's right for them, in God's plan. I just felt that God was telling me that he had other plans for my life. My mom was scared, terrified, for me because I had almost stabbed a bully to death when I was 13. The only reason why I didn't is because God stopped me just before, like mid lunge towards his neck...everything froze, and I remember hearing the God say "No".

This German man fell in love with this Irish...I think nurse or some staff lady from the camp. After WW2, he was in East Germany, swam across some river or canal between east and west Germany...while under fire or maybe potential fire, from a guard tower...crossed western Europe to Ireland, married the staft lady from the camp, getting Irish Citizenship, and lived out his life here in Ireland...and that's just one example of German Irish after WW2...it was post WW2 Germany...and East Germany at that.
Hey, glad you enjoyed it :) My two main takeaways from trying French rations out are a) the food is tasty, and b) esbit fuel smells like a fish fell into a chemical fire. --Alex
That's why we all use other means of heating it 😁 esbit fuel is disgusting and most us bring a stove on the field. If we have enough time, we also use a "gamelle" (some kind of pan) it's way better that way ! A few years ago, we still had caramels in the RICR. They were not that great but when you put them in your coffee.... that was the best way to drink coffee on the field !
Hi Emmy, you have a very nice MRE. First time i see carbonara in a can, it look okay. Bonne soirée et bon appétit . The "Rillettes de thon" are tuna spread. Rillettes can be made with pork usually.
It’s amazing to see how well other countries such as France give their soldiers some pretty incredible foods in their rations vs. the processed crap that America gives our soldiers. It just goes to show how much America values our brave soldiers that put their lives on the line for us. Same way our school system doesn’t value what they feed our children for school lunches but every other country serves actual home cooked meals, some made by actual chefs.
Military rations tend to mimic the food eaten in the country, because that is considered best for the soldiers' morale. Unfortunately many Americans eat rather unhealthily and the MREs tend to reflect that. French people take their food very seriously and I don't think French soldiers would like American MREs!

Always wonderful to see your take on these exotic rations.

As complicated as French orthography is, at least you can always pronounce unfamiliar words as long as you know the rules. In English, you can’t be 100% sure of the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word without looking it up.
@@EnigmaticLucas I was going to say the same. English rules are hard enough for native English speakers to learn....imagine how difficult it must be for non-native English speakers!!! We have to take English class in all 12 years of school and there are still people who get it all wrong!!!!! 😂
@@EnigmaticLucas Not always, in french, the pronunciation can depend if it was a latin word, greek word, etc.... A few years ago my wife and I went on a cruise with Norwegian Cruise lines. At the breakfast buffet the had a very large bowl of muesli and since I had never tried it I took a bowl, and loved it! And it was great!

not really, the french ration is a full day while the american mre is a single-meal, the ratio is actually 6 mre's to exchange 1 french ration.
Of course American MREs aren't worth as much there's way more of them than there are French rations.
The US ration are horrible , realy "junk food" (i think the badest of the world...), the ratio is more 5 US rations for 1 French ration...Even the russian rations are much better than US rations...

You should do a 24-hour ration and actually just eat that for 24 hours to see if you feel full!
The standard French ration is 3600 calories. I should hope she'd feel full!
i would luv to see dat
Overfull. These are designed for active young people in harsh conditions so waaay more calories than a civilian needs
Yeah I don't think she'd be able to eat that much lol, 3600 calories is about what my friend eats a day and he's 6'3 235 lbs and he works out 4-5 days a week
Emmy's pretty tiny compared to a typical soldier, so I think she'd be fine. :)
The laugh when Emmy drinks the coffee is priceless. You can tell Emmy is having a ball!! I love her!!
I heard that people in army bases would trade 1 French Ration for like 5+ Rations from other countries because of how much better they were.
They do look yummy

Are those kinds of tissue packaging not common in the us? you seemed pretty excited about being able to reseal them haha!
we do have them, at least where i live. but its emmy yknow, she’s always excited.
Yes, we have them, but emmy hasn't seen much in the us rations she has taste tested
Quite common.
Common for civilian use, but not in military rations.
This seems to be way more about morale than practicality. I mean there's chocolate in like 6 different forms lol
I'd argue keeping morale high IS practical.
one can never have too much chocolate :)
Chocolate is considered essential as part of breakfast on France. You can not face the day without some chocolate!
@@miriammartin175 yep! Something I love about France. Chocolate is for breakfast (and yogurt is for dessert!).

Emmy's reaction to the muesli having chocolate chips instead of raisins is so relatable.
Ditto. I hate raisins, but I love the foods that are polluted with buttloads of raisins, like muesli, trail mixes, etc.
Way better in this way than biting a cookie and finding out those specks weren't chocolate
@@lyneyra I've done that, lol. Wasn't happy.
I’m not even surprised the French one is so fancy and well organized lol

It's funny how as a french high school student I ate a very similar breakfast as the army ration one every morning. Muesli and coffee at home and pate de fruit and cereal bars in the bus. All of the products in the video really are authentic french ones 😄
They go all out with French rations. It is just missing a pack of smokes and a bottle of wine.
They used to have a pack of cigarettes and liquor in the war. Hence why so many came home addicted
🤣🤣🤣
Some present day Italian MREs have liquor in them. No, really XD
They still had smokes and whiskey ten years ago, yes
That’s in their rucksack, not in the ration 😂
Missed opportunity: making a s’more with the nougat, chocolate biscuit, and chocolate bar. Extra points if she can figure out how to do it on that mini stove
nougat will not melt well sooo bad smores :/
Oh no... Noigat would not really be good in this. It's heavily honey based and is not really the texture of nougat you see in chocolate bars.
Rather, melt the chocolate and crumble up the biscuits to make cake ;)

"It's like Handy Snacks"
Prepackaged foods were mostly a not going to find here in my home growing up but of course seeing all of our friends get them we would beg for Handy Snacks, Hostess cakes & Dunkaroo's.

No one every escaped the camp, despite no one to stop them leaving if they signed the day pass.

The cutest lady to ever eat an MRE. Love your work on these Miss!
Wow
Military rations tend to mimic the food eaten in the country, because that is considered best for the soldiers' morale. Unfortunately many Americans eat rather unhealthily and the MREs tend to reflect that. French people take their food very seriously and I don't think French soldiers would like American MREs!
