GOING off-road in a classic British family car has become a daily pastime for one New Zealand mechanic. Shane Armitage has converted a 1950s Morris Minor Traveller into a 4x4 off-roading beast that he can take on both roads and sand dunes. On first look, ‘Woody’ as the car is known, appears to be a British motor corporation classic, but is actually built on a Morris Minor shell and a Suzuki chassis with a second Morris Minor used for donor parts. Shane, of Muriwai, told Barcroft Studios: “I use it every day, it’s my daily drive but I also really like off-roading. This combines the two together. It’s really cool, two-for-one.”

Fabulously well concieved and executed, it simply looks right.
Agreed. I am not a fan of the original Traveller but this looked so good. It would have been wow to have shifted a Moggie onto a V8 Landie back in the day!
Yes, all the proportions are right, he didn't overdo it like most people would
The best part is its daily driver. I love it. He is a cool dude
"It's a mean as woka bro!" 🤣
You just have to love Kiwis, and this awesome Morrie 👍
Waka, the Maori word for boat or vessel. Now used to talk about cars and stuff too hahaha
I absolutely f*cking LOVE it!!!!! I would totally daily drive that here in Wales.
I concur
Well, You've got the countryside for it over there.
Mind you, there's also some pretty kick arse drivers roads in mid Wales too...... Unfortunately, you also have the Welsh traffic police hiding in every other layby and friggin' hedgerow with their speed guns. Even a lot of the regular police think that the local traffic cops are bastards !
Someone built a very similar Moggie on a Vitara chassis in Swansea some years ago which is still running around.
I really hope he washed that thing pretty good after going through that saltwater cuz all I can see in my head is him 6 months from now patching up rust
Those are freshwater streams running down the beach to the sea, but yeah still not great.
And it seemed as if a fair bit of it was carbon fibre anyway...
Also half of it is wood & carbon fiber
Hate to see cars going into the sea, it wrecks them, no matter how much you wash them down afterwards.
He looks like the sort of guy that probably knows what he’s doing....👍😊
This little Morris Minor 4x4 would have some tremendous advantages over larger 4x4 vehicles, as it would be able to get into areas that it's larger counterparts couldn't get into
I see what my old man says now about fast changing shots which don't let you focus on the car, and I'm young. Stop with the clever editing and show us it in nice and steady shots.
Love it!
Both the Vitara and the Minor are great cars
But not a vitara body on Morris running gear.....
This is real nice. Some hybrids turn out very well, I remember seeing an MG two seater on a range rover chassis and running gear ........ looked great and with a low centre of gravity, it was very good off road..
how do you stop it rotting ? if it was a full blown morris minor it wouldn't last five minute in that salt water , one of the first bio degradable cars ever made and they didn't even know it LOL
Just criminal driving in salt water. Made me so disappointed to see that.
@General Melchett Not going to help a bit, The only way to try and stop rust is fully galvanize the chassis then take molds off the body and make it out of fibreglass. I used to do that back in the 80s.
Love it I think it's fantastic 👏
"I always wanted one of those big American Woodies, but I could never afford one..."
Makes the entire box out of carbon fiber
Absolutely brilliant. I love what you created.
I built a woody beetle a few years back. I love to drive it. So I know the amazing feeling you get behind the wheel.
👍😍
That's one variant of the Minor that BMC didn't think of
I thought I was seeing things when I passed it on the way home, fantastic Kiwi thinking outside the box and well executed tranformation. Glad I know the story behind it now.
By rights, this should offend me, but I love it - maybe I'm not the car puritan I pretend to be
Wow..I wasnt expecting the carbon fiber. Very cool suv
In fact. I was thinking about the weight of the original Morris body.
@@smkh2890 On the original travellers the roof and rear and side panels are aluminum: at the rear the weight is in the wood (and rear axle, diff springs etc.)
just building one with 2.6 fuel injected rodeo!
Beautiful I think there is a market for it in some form or another Well done mate.. Don't worry about the wife just buy her a handbag
Wow old surfer dude..nice ride! ;)
Very nicely engineered!
Meticulously precise, superb attention to detail, a clever combination!
I just cringed when he drove through the saltwater.......😯🤔
Lovely car though! 👍😎
same..
@@markdavis632 Even the sand gets everywhere and acts like a grit that just wears anything and everything!!😯⚠️
@@pdtech4524 yeah. They don't have a long life when driven on the beach. Especially the way he drove it through sea water.
Seals, bearings, ball joints, CV's. I've even seen a good layer of sand inside the diff housings. Lots of maintenance and understand that it will rot and be a throw away very quickly.
Nice rig though.
What year and model Suzuki did you use for the running gear?
Nice one , but hey dont get her all rusty driving in salt water.
10/10 for the imagination
Well done mate, you've made a cracking machine there !
Always loved morries unfortunately not as common in Oz as Unzd especially the wagon version. You should be very proud of it.
I have one in zimbabwe for sale if you can ship it there I put a datsun 1200 engine gearbox n diff let me know if you interested
This is a RIDICULOUSLY entertaining channel.
Wowowowow! Wow! Wow!
I just love the Morris Minor Traveller!! (1958 model). It was my first car and would have been with me today, if I could have restored it myself…. I also had one of the first Suzuki SJ 10 off road vehicles.
Gosh!!! 😮. Imagine if I could have done what you have 😱❤️❤️❤️
Have fun and enjoy.
(An enthusiastic from South Africa)
A guy in the uk made one in the late 80’s lived in mansfield Nottinghamshire. He used the moggy two door body plus a Range Rover chassis cut down and still used the V8 rover engine. it was for sale and I wanted to buy it unfortunately the mileage I traveled to work and the V8 thirst and the wife stopped me from getting I do regret not buying it.
Great idea...you should sell kit's and plans...or Conversions...I this Vanilla word...We Need to occasionally Brake free...
And you nailed it Bro.
Cool Ride Bru ..... Sierra/Jimny chassis may have been better I think . Vitara is a Soft-Roader more than an Off-roader .
Beautifully DONE , nonetheless . Greetings from across the Ditch .
I Wasnt Sure About At First Because The Title I Was Expecting It To Be Over Done With A Big V8 With Tons Off Uneeded Equipment ,But No It,s Just Right
And I Like It .
My children wouldn't be to happy after listening to the real story being told about this Vitara Idea and I picked them both up from the hospital in one
I had a CO with a Morris Traveller/(countryman?) top speed 45mph- well his top speed was 45mph, be it 25mph zone, 35mph zone, 45, 55, or 70mph.
This could go into production by Mini using the Countryman ....electric motor.....this is fantastic.....a Morrytara.? Moritara.
lovely job. My father had a Moggie when I was a child, so have a lot of fondness for them. This is a cool conversion you've done.
Suzuki Vitara doesn't exactly bring off roading with any authority to my mind as they're underpowered light duty ifs short travel vehicles in the US...all that salt throughout that chassis and steel body sections...ugghhh..not good ..
Very nice. I've a 52 Hillman minx californian convertible. I'ld like to try this. Wonder if the wheel base would work. Can't find a hood ornament here in Canada. Anywhere. Cool.looking vehicles
Did you have the body galvanized underneath the paint? The salt water wouldn't be to kind on the body
_MORRIS TRAVELER!_ The Minor is a saloon; it's like calling an estate car a "saloon-estate".
Excellent good car good thinking superb result I LIKE IT 😀😁😀😀😀😎
Thats so cool. I'm now inspired to have a go at something similar, maybe with a big old Humber and old Range Rover. Good job.
I had a pick up, standard except wheels. Everybody loved it. Once you have had one, your smitten!
awesome vehicle, but couldn't afford a big USA woody so builds this one with carbon fibre parts,, doubt that's cheap
My grandma would have absolutely loved this. She had the original version!
Nicely done. I like Jimnys and I like cars from the Dis-United Kingdom. Perfect!
As someone who absolutely detests Morris Travellers I think this is cool as hell. Turned a hateful slow POS into something you can have some fun with.
Watching this with a smile on my face ...
But here in NE England it would be thwarted by bureaucracy at every stage.
Maybe for his next project, he could combine an old Austin Mini, with a Toyota Celica GT4.
Now that is a truly inspired concept...and a stunning build! 😎👍🏼
Love this,my brother has an Austin mini van, always thought it would be great on a vitara platform. Only improvement I would make to this one is to have it in pickup truck body. 👌
Now tell me: Why MG or Suzuki didn't think of THAT? Supper cool design IMHO.
Kept waiting for the "extreme off-roading", but had to make do with splashing. Cool car, tho'
....very appropriately named title... that is RIDICULOUS...
Hi Shane do you have any more photos of engine bay with out engine is bulkhead new fabrication?
Nice car, shure. But driving through water on a beach is not Offroad, it is only show.
Wot a clever boy driving his nice little car in the sea water, clever little fellow, soon to driving a rust bucket.
Really need a build video trying work out how to combine them both
It's kind of like a corn dog. Well, it'll make a turd.
Would of been nice to know a few more technical details like what engine, manual/auto. Apart from that really like it!
Yes, feature this vehicle again pls! More!
Suzuki Vitara and a dirty great gear stick sticking up in to the cabin as he changes gears not a good enough indication?
What the wife and the business partner don't know eh. Love it.😮😮
Why would you drive a vehicle ( any vehicle ) in salt water? It's going to cause rust everywhere.
Interesting car, but who the hell edited this? The narration, timing and music are all awful.
people:you crazy
Me:wow you is my god
😂😂#From Thailand
Excellent!
Can’t imagine that old body will hold up for long driving through salt water.
This is bloody marvelous! Why would you want any other vehicle?
Ab Fab bro , love what you have done
wow it beauty 4x4 dreams
thank you for detail video
Why doesn't matchbox make a car of this!?
If english SUVs were like this and not today's range rover !
Driving it through the salt will do it a lot of good,,NOT
In India we use them without modifying them, they are very well built
15mm difference in wheelbase between the two, wonder what he did to overcome that?
Hope he deals with all of that salty water. Cool build
With you driving your buggy through saltwater it's going to rot out after a while
Who else looked at the thumbnail and went "What the fkkk"
Awesome!!
Just simply mean as bro, the perfect ride!!!
Can anyone else distantly see the new defender in this vehicle ? strangely , I can !
Always loved morries but this is amazing!
I don't know. I hate all car mods
But this one actually looks good
Didn't have the money round
to buy a Morrie Thou....
Lends itself great for the convergent. Morris minor great car .
Wow! This is a awesome conversion!! Good job!
Beautiful car, well-done, would love one
This thing was on trade me a while ago, I dunno if it sold or not.
Lot of hard work.. I like ti.. let's, keep it up...😎
Awesome job and beautiful car!!
Absolutely Brilliant, and so cute.
Something about this screams Mad Max
This dudes woody is more racecar than most racecars
Driving it in the ocean... it'll rust out in no time.
Living the dream dude
It must've cost a trillion dollars!!!!
Gotta love salt water in a Morris
I love it. It is a work of art. BUT WHY ARE YOU DRIVING IN SALT WATER????.I cringe when I see that.but hey you built it. You are having fun with it. You are having a great life.Enjoy.
Surely, that's a Morris Traveller
