Agreed!! Also, what a year 1972 was for music! Such music variety, man was I spoiled in my youth. Dozens of great artists in the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 for 1972.

People often say the lyrics are silly, but I think they’re a brilliant way to evoke the image of traveling alone across a vast, empty desert. Dewey Bunnell, the songwriter and lead singer, loved to use words in this abstract way.
You nailed it at 7:25. It's mood music! I'm an old fucker from the class of '73 and sometimes you just wanted to kick back and chill with some laid-back music. Groups like America, Cat Stevens, Crosby Stills Nash, and many others fit the bill. If you were with a girl? You might wanna pull out some Carole King and/or James Taylor. ☺
My wife and I have seen them live in concert a couple of times. What's amazing is that they sound just as good live as they do on a recording. And when the show is over everyone leaves the theater smiling and in a good mood.
I love how this song builds, 1:50 pre-chorus/Chorus with no harmonizing backing vocals... 2:44 ...then with vocals hamonizing below the main vocals ... 3:53 ...backing vocals building... 4:01 chorus with full harmony above the main vocal.
Horse with no name was America's 1st big hit in 1971. I guess you could say they were the last of the more acoustic laid back style of music. Along with a California style hippie vibe.
They cut their teeth as a band in England as their dads were stationed in Suffolk at the time. America is always on the playlist when we go to the beach here in Cornwall on the Atlantic. Perfect vibe, bit of Santana,Stevie and Marvin as well, lovely.
Nice to see you diving back in to America, Chod! They did have some nice hits, but mostly when I hear you react to them I can't help but think of Bread! Guitar Man, If, and Everything I Own are all great tracks! Best wishes to you, Chod, keep up the great work on your music reactions! It's not easy being the best, but you somehow make it look easy!!

You've reacted to quite a few songs by America, and this is another great one, but you still have a few more to go, such as "Sandman" and "Daisy Jane." Both great songs.
America was a great studio band. They didn’t have concerts that were high energy like bigger bands of the era, so they were never mega. Zeppelin, Stones, The Who... they got huge from albums AND epic live shows.
I just saw this group Live last night. And while I was watching your video I suddenly realized that America when I was young was one of the groups that caused me to fall in love with music so I thank you for this revelation. If you haven't checked out Ventura Highway yet put that on the list please.
In their time, America was not underrated -- they were very well liked and had great radio play. In the decades since, though, I can see how some might have decided the band is not that great. Those folks would be wrong.
This song always made me feel sad because I think the guy is slowly dying, but I'm not sure whether he realises this, or maybe he's hallucinating by the end of the song.

Thanks Chod. Regarding mood, I agree. Songs with smooth harmony and and interesting lyrics always seem to take you on a journey - Try Michael Franks TIGER IN THE RAIN, one of the best lyrical vibes and musicianship you'll ever hear. It transports you coolsville with a jazz vibe.
You’re right about the idea that volume will affect people’s reaction. It’s an experiment that you can do easily in terms of playing music in a space and watching people react differently as you pump it up (to a certain level). Rock music has always had a visceral element to it like this, but you can tell a great song if it catches your attention as a more chilled vibe, or if it still works as a solo acoustic or piano version.
They started out making an impact but kind of almost slid into 'one hit wonder' obscurity. In 1974, they were fortunate enough to get the Beatles' old producer George Martin. The band seemed reinvigorated and starting scoring hits again. They do have a lot of good songs. One does want to kick back while listening. I did go to a concert of theirs in 1976 or 7. It was pretty bad with one of the members walking off mid concert saying he was going to go take a shower.
actually that isn’t necessarily true, in the early 70s music changed from the 60s. the sound of the early 70s was this exact sound right here. it was called soft rock, and soft rock was absolutely huge and so was america. soft rock was all you would hear in the early 70s. every band was making this mellow kind of music and the people absolutely loved it. it’s easy for people to say a band was underrated when they don’t know much about it. america is one of the biggest bands of all time, and one of the most popular and loved in the early 70s when mellow music was in. they were in the midst of all of the popular music that was coming out at the time.
So many beautiful songs by this band, especially a horse with no name. You should try some others, I see many many suggestions in your comments... Tin Man would be my suggestion. Keep up the great music and great reactions Chod👍🎶
Just pick something off their first two albums and it will be a winner. When I was in the navy and spent long periods at sea these guys and The Eagles kept me sane.
America was making hits when Led Zeppelin was big, when Jethro Tull was big, the Stones were still big. But lighter music was also popular, the Carpenters and Bread are good examples. This period was just full of quality music. You had Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Beatles solo careers were taking off, Elton John was taking off, Joni Mitchell was a strong as ever. You also had Eric Clapton/Derek and the Dominos (Layla). What I'm trying to say is that America hit the scene during a very good period of rock. They were just one of many groups putting out good music. So perhaps they are a bit underrated because their competition was so good.
Ventura Highway is 👌🏼👌🏼. That and You Can Do Magic are my favorites of theirs.
