When you have Eric Clapton in the band just playing rhythm guitar whilst you give the most delicate and moving solo... then you know that the guitarist is something special. As did the rest of the audience.. Such a suitable song for that event.
The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert, which Dire Straits headlined, was seen by over 600m people in at least 67 countries worldwide and it played a significant role in piling pressure on the South African government to finally release Mandela, which happened less than 2 years later, and bring an end to apartheid. Before performing this song Mark said how proud he was that Dire Straits had been banned in South Africa since 1979, the year after their first album was released, and said 4 words that ring as true today as they did then: "One humanity. One justice." It's fair to say this is the most emotional performance of the song Mark's ever given.
I was there I glad to say and it wasn’t cold ,but a brilliant day .mark plugs the guitar into his heart..dire straits are outstanding and always will be
I had the pleasure (and i mean pleasure) of attending that concert. Myself and 4 friends. Long but fantastic day - with plenty of great performances from Whitney Houston, Simple Minds, Eurythmics, Sting and ofcourse Dire Straits who blew everyone away. It was June so wasn't cold. I can't totally remember but I'm sure the tickets were about £20-£25 ($25-$30). Eric Clapton was brought in to replace Jack Sonni who couldn't play as he had just become a father to twin girls.
I was there, Nelson Mandela concert, live a live aid 2 - Stevie Wonder also played that day, Simple Minds, Pretenders and a new artist Tracey Chapman!!
This song is all about the last line: "We're fools to make war / On our brothers in arms." What a powerful rendition from Dire Straights. As others have mentioned, the a cappella group Home Free did an incredible cover of this song; you might want to give it a listen...and reaction? The harmonies are out of this world.
Para todos os rapazes que não conseguiram retornar para suas casas e suas famílias, e sacrificaram suas vidas pela paz de outras, e agora dormem o sono dos herois.
It was around this time that Mark had flown to see Vince Gill perform in the US and invited Vince to join Dire Straits. Vince had just gotten a recording contract, and so he declined. That would have been two of the greatest in one band…
I think that came a little later. Vince plays on The Bug from the On Every Street album released in 1991 and I believe Mark invited him to join the band for the subsequent tour but he declined leading to Phil Palmer being recruited for the rhythm guitar role. Phil had been part of Eric Clapton's prior to that. There's a great moment at Knebworth '90 when Eric broke a string mid-song and handed over to Phil to improvise a solo while he got his guitar fixed/replaced. Phil, being an experienced and consummate professional, handled the unexpected spotlight with ease while Mark watched on from the wings as Dire Straits were on next. Eric's band stayed on stage to perform with them too. I Think I Love You Too Much with Mark and Eric trading solos is magnificent.
First introduced to this song while watching West Wing. Amazing emotional end to first series. I think the West Wing was one of the best things to come out of America. Come back Jed Bartlett! Please!
Now that's how to play live music the whole Dire Straits set was just sublime. I still know where I was the night they played that set the social club had live band that night and everything stopped for Dire Straits they were that good
I can’t believe you think the ‘official’ recorded version is a patch on this Live performance, or even the Live ‘On the Night’ 1992 performance. Why would anyone bother to ‘watch’ a reaction to a static recording. Dire Straits & MK Live are always 100% better than the record company ‘official’ recordings, This is also MK’s general feelings on this point. I❤MK
My money is on Suzie Whoopin' Travs arse. This song still holds painful memories of 1982, its a very special song despite the sadness for those that made it back relatively unscathed. It's written from the perspective of a soldier dying on the battlefield surrounded by his mates.
Este es el mejor concierto de todos los tiempos. Las versiones de Walk of live, Money for nothing, Romeo and Juliet, Brothers in arms son fantásticas!!! But the BEST versión ever played was SULTANS OF SWING!!! Sultans es insuperable, magnífica, extraordinaria... INCREDIBLE !!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
In 1988 this was still fresh - the official video showed animated scenes of combat... and was inspired by the 1982 Falklands War. Many in that audience, because it was in England, would have seen live news footage from that war, and might even have known one of the UK soldiers killed there..
Love Dire Straits but have confess to only having one album on CD, yes CD, I'm old so what at least I was there 😀I have the debut album 'Dire Straits' My Favoured song "Wild West End" I listen to it on a Marantz CD, a Marantz amp. and a pair of E.V. interphase 3 speakers, It doesn't get any better, except maybe if I was using a turntable.
HELLO from The Netherlands, sorry to see you are a bit hurt. Please try to a get bit of rest. And may i ask you Sir, there was this old Dutch band called Golden Earing! Radar Love is the song i want to hear your opinion on. Or did you already did that? Realy Sir! Take that rest, your body will thank you later. My body is still Bitching about my knee.
TO FORGIVE Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s 1934 speech about former enemies in the Great War - The war to end all wars. (this attribution is disputed) It embodies the folly of war. This quote is abridged: “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears. After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well.”
Better still, Hole in the Ground by Bernard Cribbins. There's a great moment in the episode of Brian Johnson's Life on the Road featuring Mark Knopfler where the two of them start singing it together as they reminisce about their childhoods and early musical influences growing up in the North East of England.
@@PaulWalker-hz6zp. Dire Staits rhythm guitarist Jack Sonni was unable to be there as his wife had just given birth to twins. Eric and Mark were good friends and often played with each other. HomeFree do an excellent version of Brothers in Arms considering it’s a cappella, with no instruments well worth a reaction. Before anyone says anything the originals are the best it’s just a different version.
You need to do Romeo and Juliet from the same concert it's absolutely epic i know because I've watched this show countless times and remember watching it whenever it was Broadcast live in 1988 from Wembley stadium
Did you even listen to the lyrics? This is a song about a soldier who is dying and whose last words are "we're fools to make war on our brothers in arms." Knopfler's guitar lines echo the emotions of each of the song's lines. It's a crushing anti-war song that has become beloved of military families who've lost loved ones to war. You really should try hearing the lyrics for a change.
When you have Eric Clapton in the band just playing rhythm guitar whilst you give the most delicate and moving solo... then you know that the guitarist is something special. As did the rest of the audience.. Such a suitable song for that event.
Mark Knopfler, the only man who can make a guitar cry. An absolute legend. Thanks dor the reaction.
Cry & sing, such a unique guitar player, a generational talent for sure. Check out his live versions of "Romeo & Juliet."
Speaking of guitars crying the man himself Eric Clapton on stage as well
I've never heard another guitarist who can truly make a guitar weep gently, not even Mr Clapton who played on George Harrison's song.
David Gilmour would argue that point, but Mark Knofler is definitely a legend!
@@SirHilaryManfatI wouldn't believe anything Gilmour says just ask Roger, David Gilmour's stance on ukraine is shocking 😮
this isn't music my loves
From the Nelson Mandela benefit concert. Eric Clapton on stage there with them too
Told ya! He will go down in history for his guitar artistry. But what I can't get out of my head is his voice!!!
when claptons your backup guitarist, thats when you know youre GOATed
One of the best lead guitars youould ever wish to find
THE best version of Brothers in Arms.
dont matter how many times i hear that song it fetches tears
Me too 💜🌻🏴
One of the best performances in music history for me and a lyricall masterpiece

From a time when the best music was written, the 80´s!
The album Brothers in Arms imo is one of the best albums ever made.Mark Knopfler is a genius.
It’s a top 5 album for me for sure. Incredible album.
Just a masterpiece of these english boys!
One humanity, one justice 🙏🏻
Two guitar legends for the price of one. 🤘🏼😎🇺🇸

He makes the guitar cry
"in the fear and alarm, you did not desert me, my brothers in arms"

LOVE DIRE Straits ... mmmmmmmmm.... ..... ....HOPE YOU BOTH get BETTER Soon ............
When will be the next time we see musicians like this...?
probably never.
I was there, Nelson Mandela concert, live a live aid 2 - Stevie Wonder also played that day, Simple Minds, Pretenders and a new artist Tracey Chapman!!
You want chills? This song is played and placed perfectly in the ending scene of Miami Vice - Out Where the Buses Don't Run. Must see!
Also used to great effect on ‘The West Wing’
This song is all about the last line: "We're fools to make war / On our brothers in arms."
What a powerful rendition from Dire Straights. As others have mentioned, the a cappella group Home Free did an incredible cover of this song; you might want to give it a listen...and reaction? The harmonies are out of this world.
Brilliant song especially the 7 minute version
What a great song
This song was in the 80s music charts and that quality I miss in modern charts.
Para todos os rapazes que não conseguiram retornar para suas casas e suas famílias, e sacrificaram suas vidas pela paz de outras, e agora dormem o sono dos herois.
Absolutely beautiful words, THANKYOU!
Well supported by Mr. Eric Clapton on stage

Finally a reaction to that video. I waited for ages.
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
I was at that concert Nelson Mandela's Birthday celebration. Mark and Eric Clapton 2 guitar legends on stage together a memorable event!
Typing through tears, all my lost brothers and sisters 💔
great costumes
This song was written by Mark as a tribute to his friends that fought in the Falklands War ans generally all wars in general

I can’t be the only one doing a double take at Clapton… playing backing guitar 🤯
Your not, even Eric Clapton had to take a backseat and admire Mark's stunning guitar playing.
In case you missed it, yes that was Eric Clapton on stage playing rhythm.
Top 3 songs ever made

A giant of a man and leader. Perhaps the nation is forgetting and moving away from his ideology to it's detriment.
@@nickmaguire4914 Perhaps the whole world has become less noble. Or is it harder to spot the giants among the noise?

You guys look great
Nice Halloween intro 💯❤️🇦🇺
Eric Clapton was there playing aswell. cool 7:58

Pretty sure that was Eric Clapton on stage with them...i'm happy to be corrected.
It was.
Good
OH! Those injuries are going to be real after the video with that "you don't have to do much acting" comment. 😂😂
Surprised it took you so long to get to this track!
His voice is Morgan Freeman in song , soothe calming ❤
I do like this song but I highly recommend a band called The Levellers and their song Another Man's Cause about the same subject.👌

The band got back together specially for this concert, as they were taking a break after the gruelling year long Brothers in Arms tour.

Harley Quinn & accident victim (Happy Halloween) are doing this reaction to Brothers in Arms from Dire Straits.
There’s a version of this song where Mark has a violinist backing him up and is as moody as heck.
"Telegraph Road" next please
