My Amputation Story!
Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel has documented my journey adjusting to life with a visible disability as an amputee, and continues to be a haven to discuss physical and mental health!

My 12-year-old is slightly jealous that when you lost one leg you gained 3. 😂 She understands that it’s more inconvenient to carry them around, but she’s still jealous. So, even on your hard days, I hope you can find the joy in having 4 legs when the rest of us only have 2. (She reviewed this before I commented and it meets her approval.)
Ok your 12 year old sounds awesome!
I love her perspective on life!
I adore that you got her approval before commenting 😂❤
cyborg aah modularity
You can’t be jealous of a person who was amputated losing a limb is not good it’s bad
🎶 Row, row, row on, Jo

Great thinking, Joe! It’s nice to see someone else with a disability thinking outside of the box when it comes to our range of motion. We find ways around our problems and it’s simply fun to have your brain work that way it makes us better problem solvers :DThank you for being awesome and sharing your ups and downs on your journey it means a lot to me.
As a rower, I’m really glad you found a way to enjoy the sport! It’s a great workout that uses all your body’s muscle groups. (And as you said, it’s low impact) be sure to post videos if you ever try it on the water!
Yooooo I’m a rower too
I'm so glad you found a solution! As a competitive rower, I can tell you that our community strives to make rowing a more inclusive sport + activity!
I knew there were lots of difficulties with a prosthetic leg, but I would have never thought about such specific issues. Thanks for letting people like me know, so we can better understand (I have mobility issues, but still have functional limbs).
Love rowing! Full body work out but low impact!
I'm not an amputee, but when you started taking about rowing with your regular leg, I was like immediately: use the biking leg 😊
Just combining, what I learned from your videos. 😂
Rowing is fun and I'm glad you have a solution!
“Yo you gonna come workout with me?”
“Yeah sure, just let me go change my leg real quick”
Glad to hear you’ve found a solution to do the exercise you like😊
Nice
I'm so happy for you!
You go girl!
I've just begun getting into rowing and I love it. I'm super glad to hear you've got it back in your life. Brilliant problem solving!
My (prosthetic) leg kicks out when I cycle so they kind of tether it too the cycle pedals. I love rowing though.
Those outfits are so Gorgeous! From one swift or to another, you slayed!
I'm super happy to hear this - I love rowing - I can make it as easy or as heart pounding as you can get and even something in between. I find it makes the child in me happy the same way teeter totters and swings did as a kid. I can't walk far, but I can row!
I love how you adapt to your situations and share the path that lead you to them.
I love it when we come up with our own solutions and jump ahead in our goal! ❤ Fabulous
Congrats on the discovery! That's so great!!
I need to call my prosthetist and have one made with a socket like that so I can do squats at the gym. What a revelation. Thanks Jo!
I knew about running legs, first time I heard of biking legs. Thank you for allowing me to learn those things.
I'm not particularly brilliant at figuring things out sometimes, but I'm glad you were able to find a solution to your problem.
I love this for you! Brilliant moments should come more often!
This is why it’s important to understand how the things you use work, if you know what they are made to do you can guess what they could do and test it with minimal damage
LOVE a good row!! Glad you could make it work.
You are absolutely amazing. Keep up the good work
the right tool for the job! great idea!
Amazing what you can do with your prosthetic leg. My leg was saved, but I only have 76 percent range of motion and don't do anything close to what you do. Amazing and inspiring videos. Thank you so much.
Waaay cool! Great idea using the biking leg. Rowing is a really good cardio/strength exercise too... Yay for you!! Keep Rockin... umm... Rowing...
Love to see representation in rowing, just make sure your form is good and you shouldn’t have any injuries or problems
Awesome, great solution!
I love your spirit and your shirt 😊
Yay! That’s awesome!
As you were describing the problem, I was literally thinking "why doesn't she use her biking leg??" So glad it worked out!!
I love rowing so much :D
I use a rower at the gym, and found exactly the same thing, the cut-down back of my cycling leg also allows better range of motion for rowing. Also using the foot-straps to hold my leg in place is very useful, prevents it from flying off the foot-pad at full extension.
Smashing idea! ❤
You are incredible!
Yayyy🎉
Thank you for the great tips. I hope to use them someday if I ever healbup.
Some rowing programs offer adaptive rowing were they have boats made for people who have lost a leg and arm and they are really fun and a good way to exercise
...YESSS!!!
Rowing is great exercise!!!!😊😊😊
That’s a nice rowing piece of equipment! Choice :)
Awesome! That's genius
Nice! I'm glad
This is a great idea. I'll have to keep it in mind incase a client has a similar issue.
I like rowing too!
Smart idea!
I love your videos. I'd be really interested to learn about the financial costs and insurance realities of what led to your surgery, the costs of getting/maintaining/replacing your prosthesis, and any other related topics. Thanks for all your content!
YAY!
Get it!
Thanks for the info Jo! I have been considering getting a rowing machine since a treadmill or stationary bike might be more problematic.
I use my first leg which has an ankle adjustment for heels. Ill just leave the ankle adjustment open and the push and pull changes the angle of theffot making it easier.
Awesome tip for other amputees Jo! ❤
Adapt, overcome! Get to sweating Jo!!!
Grats!
❤❤❤❤❤SO AWESOME!!!
You are amazing
This is good info to know if I ever lose a leg one day
Jo is such a great motivational speaker! I wonder if she knows it?? Is Jo short for Joanne,Jody,Jolene etc?
Yay🎉
that's awesome
Yaaay
seeing amputees that are jacked asf is just fire for motivation. thank you.
Good job🙂👍
You used to actual row or fitness rowing?
Recumbent bike 😘 mine makes a great book shelf and clothes horse, but IF I use it, it is very comfy and no impact on my knees.
smart!
Woo hoo!
I gotta be honest the moment you mentioned the limited rangw of motion I went "biking leg" 😊
@footlessjo I’m an adaptive rowing coach, happy to help if you want another tip to make rowing more enjoyable. 🤙🏼
If you keep looking you'll find it 1 day. But it's very important to keep tracking your legs. You don't want to lose them. It can be hard to find.
lovely feet out rowing technique
I love rowing. Unfortunately many gyms in my area don't have/only have one rowing machine.....
What you might notice in martial Arts some movements might be awkward. This is where ones particular way of doing movements varies. Adaptation is key 😊
I wish I could do that
Definitely that's what I need, but can't get insurance ro pay for the 2nd leg!
What a funny divide we have in this world -- People who would do anything to workout and people who would do anything to not workout. As for me, I'm firmly in the middle 😊
😍
I had the same problem.. but the prosthetic maker create something with my sleeve..
"Modern problems require modern solutions."
How do you get so many different legs? Fellow amputee here an I really want to know.
if you had a ball about the size of a soft ball on the end of your biking leg it would probably work even better but biking would be pretty hard
how proprietary is the heel-foot connection? I'm guessing it's not something you could make stuff to fit at home and swap out in a minute or two at the gym?
🤔 how would rowing feel for chronic pain from high grade stress fractures not healing properly???
Would you use a bikeing leg for martial arts? Because you nead the range of motion to kick? Or would you not use any prosthetic for the safety of others? Or just it flying off.
Im very aquatic in my exercise regime and recreational lifestyle…. I am curious to know if you were and if so what adjustment did you do to continue
Where did you get your shirt? 😯
“low impact” is crazy to me cause i did rowing for 2 seasons and got so many injuries i had to quit, although i suppose one less leg means your only going to feel it in one calf lmao
can u go live agian plz!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’m curious, were you doing the actual boat rowing? I just remember there being a shitload of criteria outside of an individual‘s control (height range, weight range, etc.) to qualify for the rowing team at the first university I attended and wondering how the heck anyone would even start in the sport to begin with.
Granted, it wasn’t the kind of school where you just picked up a sport, if you were rowing (running/playing/etc.) there you almost certainly had a scholarship to be doing so.
May I ask how many different legs do you have? I'm waiting to get my first.
What if (not saying it will happen) after your leg came off it would grow back
?
Question I sometimes run into another leg amputee so that leads to my question why can’t your leg charge?
Sister my right below knee is artificial can I work in artificial leg standing work please advice me
I know this sounds stupid but can’t you just roe with your prosthetic off? I have both my legs so I was just curious if it would work that way? Or is for balance?
Weirdly this wouldn't be an issue with actual rowing. Or at least not with the boats I'm familiar with
I'm now watching your video and I keep thinking if you get along with one prosthesis why don't you cut off your other leg and have 2 prostheses
I’m curious why is the back of your walking leg so much higher could you not use the same leg for biking and walking? I’m just confused becuase your quite active so why not my your everyday leg more equipped for you to move around on a bike and stuff?
