Due to the trauma of the accident that caused my amputation, my residual leg makes the ugly side of the Batman villain Twoface look like a newborn baby's smooth bottom. But seriously, I used to be a bit envious when I'd see the clean scars of other amputees' residual legs as I experienced quite a bit of pain fitting into my prosthesis the first 7 or 8 months. But now that the pain has pretty much gone away and the prosthetic leg is fitting much better these days, I look at the scars on my leg much more lovingly. They are reminders of what I survived and the fact that all the support of my wife and family and hard work of my doctors, prosthetists, and physical therapists are getting me back to a pretty high level of new normal! Thanks again for another great video Jo!

Thanks Jo. I am so glad that you are comfortable showing your scars and your residual limb. I had a traumatizing encounter with an amputee when i was 4 or 5 and ever since i have been very uncomfortable around other amputees. I felt really bad about it so i have been stretching myself and desensitizing myself to my irrational discomfort. Your videos and your channel has been very helpful and you sharing your thoughts and the easy going showing off of your limb has made my discomfort feelings less. I have consciously thanked you and your channel recently when speaking with a very nice Vet who just so happened to be missing a leg. In the past (shamefully) i would have felt uneasy and may have avoided him altogether, but thanks to you my emotional brain caught up with my logical brain and we had a very nice chat.

I have a scar under my nose. Apparently when I was 3, I was running around and playing tag with the neighbors. One girl who was it was chasing me and managed to catch up amd tag me. Unfortunately, she tagged a little too hard where I fell and busted my nose. Had to get stitches. Thankfully thats all that came from that.

My skin used to never scar but now all it takes is a bug bite. But my older ones that did appear when I was younger tend to fade and vanish over time. I actually miss them, they were something I saw all the time, I got used to them, and then they're gone :(

Kind of an interesting one. i have chronic illness, and with that in the beginning meant lots of testing to make sure and rule out anything life threatening... and in the right lighting, i can point out many individual blood draw spots on my inner elbow! i also have a scar on my eye, the colored part at the top is actually flat, its an artificial drain due to my natural one failing. this one is fun to freak people out with 😂 ... i also have a couple kitty scars, which now since they've passed they're bittersweet, like they left their mark on me on the outside, as well as my heart ❤💔🐾🐾

Partial hand amputation, partial foot amputee, skin grafted foot, skin grafted leg (3rd-degree burns), scars on arm (burns), scars on the other leg (burns), about 15 operations. Diabetes (both feet not long for this world), neck injurys, shoulders messed up, both knees quickly giving out, but hips wearing out, lower back injury. I could go on for a few more lines ;)

When I was going in for surgery to remove the melanoma from my back, my doctor told me that I would have a scar. My response was “what’s another one? I’ll just add it to my collection”. Between all the surgeries and just my all around klutzyness, I’ve lost count of all the scars on my body.
And I can relate to the drain tube, had one after an open heart surgery and when it came time to remove it was given Tylenol and then told I would just feel a slight pinch... still one of the worst pains I have every felt

I love scar stories!! scars tell a story, the story of what you've been through, what you've survived and the stories you get to tell... some scars have funny stories, some....not. i have a "cool" scar on my left middle finger...long story short...the very first time i went ice skating, i fell on the ice and some...a**hole skated right over my hand, i've been told i was lucky that my finger didn't get cut off and it's been almost 20 years now, i grew, the scar is now kinda small, compared to what it was on a 8 year olds hand... but yeah, scars always tell a very personal, sometimes deep story

This video is so cool, and I have a lot of similar scars to you! When I was around 2 I ran headfirst into a door frame, and I've had a really cool Y-shaped scar on my forehead ever since. I also have a fresh scar from a cat that didn't want to be held. I really like that one because it joins the older scars from other kitties that are no longer here, and it's a nice way to remember them and feel like a part of them is still with me.

Me too, I had 2. One was in my arm and another was in the side of my neck. The arm one they pulled out during another surgery but the neck one I was fully awake with no extra pain meds. I definitely remember calling the doctor some not so nice names because he didn't want to wait the 5 minutes for my nurse to get the meds out of the machine.

My first (also of many) scars were the three (mostly on top of each other) that literally saved my life. I’m one of the first infants to have survived 3 open heart surgeries for a particular kind of congenital heart defect back in 1962. I remember when I was 6 being proud and thrilled when my large chest scar finally sunburned. (It previously stayed white while surrounding skin burned.) I thought it was really cool that the scar tissue was alive and could also get burned. LOL I don’t remember ever being embarrassed by my numerous scars. They were almost badges of honor for being alive.
I think this was a great topic to discuss Jo as people can be very self conscious of non-perfect bodies.
    WELL DONE. 😷🖖

I have a similar scar on my forehead! I was 3 and I was playing outside of our building with one of my neighbour's cat, with a long string. I turned my head to see if the cat was following and when i looked in front of me again BAM i had run into a wall. I still remember going back up the stairs, leaving a trail of blood that our sweet neighbour cleaned up for us, to go show my dad/mom. My scar is also visible under direct sunlight or good lighting! I have to stop copying you, because between that and a horseback riding accident at 14 that is likely the cause of my tumor in my right leg, it's starting to be a bit too much haaha I'm sorry co-host Sophie left : /

Habe you ever considered the possiibility of being a nuisance not to people on the web, but perhaps those who deal with you directly? Is your disability your best friend? Even more so than real friends or even your partner? How much time, in your day to day life, are you dedicating to pampering your disability and "broadcasting" about it? I am not saying this is how it is and I require no answer either. Just wondering if you ever thought about that and that it is a possibility. Also, you have said in various videos that you are worried people might define you over your disability. Have you ever asked yourself to which extent yo define yourself by your disability, your other issues and such? Again, it doesn't bother me. I don't habe to watch your videos, if they would bother me. I'd just turn them off, but what about the people you are dealing with?

I scar so easily. People run screaming when they see my legs and hands. It doesn't help for the last 6 years I healed so slowly. 5 months ago I got my biggest scar, kidney transplant. I was much heavier so I have droopy tummy. The way the scar is, it looks like I got a vertical tummy tuck on my right side. No I don't show anyone except my mom only because she wouldn't stop hounding me.
My most memorable scars are where they removed the "roots* of my 6th fingers. I was born with 12 fingers. One was removed 2 days before my 7th birthday. On my 8th birthday, I had the same pinky with stitches from trying to peel field corn husk open. Those freaking leaves are razor sharp when they are tiny.
.I guess I have funny stories too.

My scars are lame. I have a faint chicken pox scar on my nose, I can still see it but no one else can, but it was 30 years ago so yeah. I had a big chicken pox scar on my chest but that got all stretched out when puberty hit, lol. I can't even find that one now. I have a half inch burn scar on my right wrist from accidentally pressing it into the heating element in the oven while taking out something (do not recommend). Lastly, l had spinal cord surgery done on my lower back so there's a nice long scar from that, and then again when I started leaking spinal fluid from my incision and they had to re-stitch up the bottom of the incision, which made a much more bumpy and wide scar from the very different sutures. But I never see that so I don't even know what it looks like now. I've heard it's barely visible from my husband but I can still feel the bumps from the stitches so I know it's there! That was 14 years ago I think? Thankfully the worst I've seen since then is stretch marks.

  • @hasu4399
    @hasu4399 3 роки тому

Do stretch marks count? They are all over me and kinda remind me that I grew up too early so to speak and made dumb decisions, so I really don't like them. Although I really like that comment I've once read, which went along the lines of "blessed be the daughters and sons of Thor" x)
otherwise, thankfully, I just have a tiny scar on my middle finger. Basically I was clumsy with a bread knife, and cut into my finger tip, and actually cut deep enough to hurt the ring finger also. I remember my initial reaction being annoyed. I held it under water but it just wouldn't stop bleeding. Slightly panicking, I went to get a plaster and left a nice trail of blood drips all over the appartment... fun times...
The thing had trouble healing actually and at some point my mum noticed the plaster, I told her what happened, and she put some sort of white powder into the wound and gave me a proper full finger bandage. Thankfully, it healed allright. There is kinda a white-looking bump under it, but oh well.
It honestly wasn't very dramatic, it just looked dramatic because it was bleading like crazy.
I think I have scars in my mouth from wisdom tooth removal - it was really deep in there - but I can't see those.

due to 7 years of living with dermatillomania (skin picking disorder) and not getting help, huge parts of my body are just scar tissue. i'm so grossed out by myself because of it. it's so ugly. i'm so ashamed.
i don't know how to live with this...
sunlight doesn't feel good on my skin anymore (i need to be really careful) and especially my face and hair always get extremely oily when it's warm. in the winter my skin is painfully dry.
    i can't show my skin. i can't sunbathe.
i used to be so beautiful, now i have a body dysmorphic disorder.
i just want to turn back time.
or die and be born again.

Watched the Inescapable pain video before this and figured it would be a bit more upbeat. And it was. I like my scars.
Sorry it gets icky from here.
My favorites are the incision to pull my rib out of my lung and reset it, including the dots where the chest tube and drain was. Second is above my thumb where they had to pull it back into position from being pushed back into the fleshy part.

When I got top surgery last year my Nana checked in on me and asked "No scarring?" it was so funny to me. I have two scars across my chest, each at least 14 inches long. They don't remove that much tissue without scarring!
I personally kinda like them! It took a lot of work to get that surgery and I'm proud of the results.

I had bone grafting (taken out right below my knee) done for my right ankle TT Fusion. Of course, it's still healing but it's very sensitive when I put my leg or the bone is very sensitive when I put it done on the bed or any surface.

Trans guy here. 5 months ago I got top surgery. The scars are still healing of course but about a month ago I acknowledged that they are never going to be anything less than extremely obvious. Not surgeon's fault. I scar easily and have very fair skin so the scars are bright pink. All three feet of them. I swim a lot and finally decided that I wasn't going to keep wearing a shirt. The scars are part of my body, my trans body, and they actually mean a lot to me. No more hiding. But a lot more stares! Oh well.

I don’t really have any impressive scar stories. The only really visible scar I have is on my elbow, which is from literally tripping over my own feet while walking into school. Turns out they don’t stitch elbows! I then have almost invisible scars on my right cheekbone (stitches after tripping over my own feet and falling UP some steps) and under my chin (stitches after tripping over my own feet while rollerblading in the house). My only surgery left basically no scar, which is a bit disappointing for such a major surgery, although as it was on my face I am grateful for my surgeon’s fine handiwork. The incision was done perfectly along my eyelid crease and you can only see that my crease is a couple of mm longer than the other if you look extremely closely.

I had a terrible ankle fracture myself on Dec. 22, 2006 at the age of 47. I've had a total of four surgeries- the original ORIF, the bone graft six weeks later (we have similar knee scars), hardware removal (broken and painful screws) and five years after the original accident, I had a fusion. There were a few scary weeks in the early days where amputation was advanced as a possibility because there was so much destruction from my fall (down the stairs, I fell at the top, landed on my ankle, then slid down the stairs with my foot underneath me). The lower third of the fibula was totally smashed and despite the plate and 12 screws, it was not healing, leading to the bone graft which was thankfully very successful. The scar on the outside of my left leg has been opened three times and so it is kind of ugly and pitted. There is a scar on the inside of the ankle that has been opened twice, a scar where the bone broke through the skin, and a scar on the front of my foot from the fusion. I went from a six inch plate and a total of 12 screws in three places (fibula, tibia and sydesmosis) to a shorter plate in the front of my foot with eight screws. I still set off some metal detectors, and going through the security scanner at the airport is a pain in the neck.
The fusion was necessary because there was no cartilage left between the tibia and the main bone of the foot. It was bone on bone and really painful. The fusion surgery went very well and I was lucky enough to have a local nerve block for 48 hours. I remember the pain right after the initial surgery- it was just terrible, despite the pain meds. I would have rather given birth three times than go through that pain ever again.
    Thanks for sharing your story.

I have a scar about an inch from my left eye. I was a dumb kid, and let my sister tie my arms and legs together. I slipped while trying to move and hit one of those rolling office chairs. I had to get four stitches. I also have a super faded one from my chinchilla, which is weird since she didn't bite and her paws don't actually have any nails/claws... anyways, your pets are adorable:)

I'm a RAKA. If wear short pants all of the time. I used to wear jeans all of the time and they won't go over the socket. But I wear long shorts so I can cover up the limb (it's what my PT called a "shorty" - cut is about 8" above the other knee) if I don't have the prosthetic on. But I had circulation issiues in my left leg actually first and almost lost it. Circulation stopped for 6 hours, and 12 sureries were needed by plastic surgeon to take out all the dead tissue in the calf. I left a hole in the calf and he used a skin graft from my upper thign to use to cover it up. It healed sitting about 3cm below the skin level. I has matching scars on both legs for a while. So I do wear long socks to cover it up. Actually, 5 months before I lost the right leg, they did the same thing on the right leg trying to save it. The way the limb healed, were they did the skin graft is lighter than the skin around it, and I use it as a guide to put on liners.

Most of my scars are from cats, or acne, or just stretch marks (those are around my knees as well as hips and thighs). I think they just tell a story of your life.
I do have two on the ring and pinky fingers of my right hand, from when I ran over them with a skateboard as a kid. Don't reccomend!
There's a couple of scars I hope to have in the future, as they'll be markers of a significant improvement in my quality of life.

I've got a scar on my leg that is very well hidden because my legs are like bigfoot legs, very hairy. But that scar is one I tell a lot of people about because the story is why I hate certain things, like my old solder gun, and doing soldering in general. As you might've guessed I got it from soldering, the cable for my soldering gun got caught on my stove top where I was doing some soldering and when I set it down it came flying down, burned through my pyjamas and was held onto my leg for a good bit, I had to literally pull it off my melting skin, not a fun time but it's one hell of stupid story

One of my craziest scars that I have is a small dot right below my left thumb, I was on a road trip with my family when I was about 8 years old and was coloring with markers to pass the time. Right as I went to close one of the markers we hit a massive bump in the road, the marker clamped down on my hand leaving a circle cut out which proceeded to bleed profusely.

Oh drains are awful! I had two drains after my (very exiting) top surgery (double mastectomy for gender euphoria), and when they came off it was dramatic. I have two little scars at my sides and they make me happy because they remind me of the fact that my life is so much better after that surgery. The incision sites are actually small and hidden because of the type of procedure that I had. I love my scars because they remind me that I took my life in my own hands and ownership over my body.

My most obvious scar is on my knee. It's not big by any means but it's very obvious for how old it is. In elementary school I fell and scrapped my knee pretty bad. I went to the office so they could clean it and bandage it as was the rule at my school. Well, the secretaries were too busy gossiping and just waved me away saying, "there's a sink and emergency kit back there. Go take care of it yourself" Me being a kid I wiped all the blood off with wet paper towels and put a band-aid on. I later had to go to the doctor because turns out them not helping me clean it properly at the school meant I had an infection that almost reached my bone. I had to be on antibiotics after that.
I had dental surgery to fix a root canal that was messed up twice by a dentist. Turns out he not only went in another direction and didn't even clean out the actual root canal but also broke off pieces of the metal instrument inside and didn't tell me. I was in such terrible pain and the only way the surgeon could fix it was cutting open the side of my gum and drilling through my jaw to reach the area. She removed the metal pieces that were basically like pieces of needles and cleaned everything out properly. No scar from that one because my gum healed but it's quite memorable to say the least. I also had a half chipmunk face while healing because of the swelling but even then the pain wasn't nearly as bad as the pre-surgery pain.

That I know have scar that will stay with so I can remember when some said spider and I ran out of the trampoline and fell into the fire pit. (I’m fine now). Also about her knee I had one of the same experiences in my neighborhood with a rock going into my knee and I probably needed stitches but it healed and 🙂 fine

I have a few scars. I have a scar under my nose from a nose surgery as I could not breath through my nose. I also have scars on my knees from falling over and over and over on healing wounds as I was a clumsy kid haha. I have a scar on the tip of my ring finger where my finger was sliced off by a door. Some scratch marks from my cat (he does not like anti-flee meds), and some acne marks. And one big scar on my shoulder from removing beginning skin cancer. So now I’m forever translucent from avoiding the sun and having a big scar to remind me that not being tan is not a bad thing in my case :)

My legs from the knee down are covered with scars from being hit from a car;I got a chunk of muscle tissue torn off of my right calf, they also had to cut open my right knee to put a rod in my leg, and a scar from where the bone poked through the skin, I had the skin above my right eye torn so I have stiches scars there too. My stomach from a colostomy because I have a congenital bowel disorder. I do wood carving so my hands are covered with scars. I also used to do cutting when I was a teenager due to (at the time) undiagnosed mental health issues so I have scars on my upper arms.

I'm pretty sure that the surgery you had on your wrist was because of carpal tunnel syndrome. That just basically means that one of your tendons is chronically swollen and causes your wrist to be in pain and can also cause numbness and pain in your hand. The only reason I know that is because my mom is going to get that exact same surgery soon because she has carpal tunnel syndrome. So yeah.

I had a biker friend with a false leg from below the knee. His leg fell off on a fast road and it went out of shape. Funniest thing ever was the look of car drivers as they went past watching him beating his leg back in to shape.
It was thirty years since but still makes me laugh.
Basically if people find you taking your false leg off gross then it's something to laugh at rather than be embarrassed by.
