Aw man I feel you on the whole bit about hiding weaknesses in one's drawings by hiding things. I did that for a long long time and have finally started facing my fears and forcing myself to practice what I am more uncomfortable drawing. I had this epiphamy one day what the problem was... I used to experiement with art more, but at some point people start telling you how good you are! You take on the label of "the artist". Yet, with that label comes this burden that you HAVE to be great, why? Because you are tHe aRTiSt. Suddenly taking the chance to make a mistake, make something possibly not good feels almost antithetical to one's own identiy. The label can almost be one's undoing and the artist needs to learn how to accept that not everything we do is going to look so good that it was done by "the artist".

For me it's a bit different. I would hide things mainly because I was just being lazy. XDDD

i've attempted character sheets many times but given up halfway since i'd have the mindset that i "know" how to draw my character and i find some information in many character sheets personally unnecessary, but drawing the first episode of my comic quickly made me realize i often forgot the shape of my main character's eyes or how his hair looked from different angles lol, having to look back to panels i _just_ drew for reference regularly. your video may be the kick in the butt i need to actually make my character sheets, highlighting the aspects i'm most likely to forget for easy reference, since now i actually know what it is i _need_ a sheet for lol. i'm still in the early production of my first webtoon episodes before officially posting anything and this has been very helpful!

Character sheets are very important. Especially for long term projects. Like you, I ended up going back to past chapters just to remind myself on how to draw some characters. Character sheets are KING!!

Dude, don't be so hard on yourself. The comic is honestly great and the way you managed to get me attached to all the characters in such a short period of time is really impressive, not to mention the art is amazing.

Dude, i just read your comic in one go! Let me tell you - I had so much fun times. I burst out laughing so many times! And your writing is so captivating, I held my breath every time I turned the page. It felt like I found a rare gem no one knew about. I'm so glad UA-cam recommended me this video. I see your point - as the artist there is some stuff you need to practice on. But your writing and sense of humour is true gold! I'm looking forward on what you will do in the future.

I can’t wait to watch more of your videos! I myself am doing storytelling studies (mainly from arcane and shows I like). I am not the best artist either, but I do agree that if creating comics is something you wanna do as a career, definitely tackle on it early for practice.

This is how i know how stupid i am. I am watching this, 15 chapters into my first comic, running into the exact same problems, having considered creating a character sheet as per the recommendation of other videos like this, and im still like "nah ❤". 💀💀💀

Oh my god, I don’t know where to start😂 I can relate to almost everything! This will properly be a super long comment, I say sorry in advance.
I can totally relate to preferring the black and white / screentones manga aesthetic over the colorful Webtoon one. When I started with my first webcomic i was torn between both. I knew it would most likely perform way better in color than in black and white but I’m a 90s girl and grew up reading traditional manga, so i decided to draw it like I want it and live with the consequences 😂 the second reason being that I’m super slow at drawing and it would have doubled the time it takes me to finish one chapter.
When I first read Webtoons the color really threw me off and it took me a while getting used to it. I understand that the drawings are more stimulating than just black and white but it never impacted me and my emotions like manga art did. And I’m really sad that this style is no longer wanted on these modern platforms.
I also agree with the vertical speech bubbles, I use them as well as I hate the horizontal ones for aesthetic reasons😅
And I love that you also use black shadows. I found this to be a game changer to my art as it gives great depth to the character and intensives the manga feeling.
I had similar problems with my script. I wrote like 80% of the plot before i started and tried to make the scenes as clear as possible in the script because I thought it would be easier to draw. I was wrong😂 paneling was and is one of the most difficult processes of all for me as you really have to portray the feelings, use interesting angles, settings etc. When I finished the paneling I noticed that a lot of the texts I’ve carefully written before didn’t match or were too long. I almost always had to change them. So now i don’t waste time thinking about the perfect dialogue while writing and just write roughly of what’s the point of this conversation and where I want to go with it. I finalize the text after paneling and that is way more time efficient even if it’s a bit uncomfortable for me as I’m a huge perfectionist😂
As finishing words I just wanted to let you know that I think you’re a great artist with a lot of potential and I’ll have a look at your current webcomic😊
Do you have instagram as well? I would love to connect!
    Have a great day!

The design of the characters... years ago I made my first and so far only proper comic with a writer, and even though I started with character sheets the designs chafed pretty quickly. I think I made the mistake of actually making them too simple and understated ... which kinda only leaves you sheer draftsmanship skill to make things look cool lol.
The characters and style warped so much in 40 pages is kinda funny, but at least I was proud of how the art looked in the last few pages lol

    • @alohamikan
      @alohamikan  10 місяців тому +2

There is such a scary balancing act of Interesting Character Design vs Easy Characters to Draw on Repeat. Either way you can dig yourself into a hole. I'm nowhere near good at character design myself, I have a terrible habit of not iterating designs or having heavy bias towards the first one I do.
But, characters and style being warped isn't the worst thing, in fact I believe it's inevitable. With the amount of milage each page gives of course you'll grow as an artist. For me, my first page and last page were done only months apart yet still VERY different.

Lol ur narration is so funny, hope u keep it up!! I’m in awe at how the final manga was some of ur first times drawing certain characters. So nice too to hear about your struggles from start to finish especially with how hard it is translating from script to page and even how long it takes to letter the comics, I related to it so much! I was also so surprised at how long it takes copy pasting from script to page when I did it😂

I have never once heard a legitimate reason for why comic sans bothers ppl. I actually think it’s looks easy to read and have used it on every project I’ve done 😂 and it’s funny cuz ppl who claim to hate comics sans got deathly quiet when I told them my own work which they loved uses it 🤣

Oh, I watched the video about commission and now this popped up in my recommendation again :D I personally struggle with translating writing into panelling. I failed once when a writer offered a script and I was like, "tf. no way this is fitting into a comic". Even for my own personal "comics" I choose to not do writing beforehand haha.. I'm allergic to outlines. I think I'll try your method. Also props to liking drawing cute girls, I'm from "drawing cute boys" side

i think the problem with e with super simple color webcomic i saw before that some of them lack of value , like there no depth behind it I'd rather read a shoujo manga with full off screentone and flower asset since the artist knows what to do with them
