They say it takes a few weeks to make a habit. Once you get used to doing something consistently, it's also a lot easier. I did a month long challenge for daily art in May, and by June it felt really strange not drawing. (I wanted to recover before art fight, so I didn't keep the daily uploads up). My point is 100% discipline, and yes, I had days where drawing was really hard, especially by the end of the month. But once you get into a habit it's a lot easier to keep it up.

I've been posting my web manga to Webtoon and just hit my two year anniversary. I'm super happy because I finally got a patreon subscriber and it's the first time I've made money because of my comic specifically! Don't get discouraged! No matter how long it takes!
This was a really interesting perspective. I'm planning on making a webcomic that I've been planning out for somewhere around a year now, but I feel like I can't begin until I flesh nearly the entire story out. This vid is making me reconsider if that's smart, and to leave some elasticity in the middle for if I decide to change things!
this finally pushed me to start working on my dream comic "Apprentice"! I've been waiting 3 years since I originally created the characters to make it! Tysm ^^
Thank you so much for these tips, I'm definitely struggling most with the last one at the moment. I absolutely love telling stories and there's nothing I want more than being able to live off doing what I love and I've already gotten into a schedule with three pages a week, regular uploads, etc, and just passed my 300 milestone on webtoons, but the money side is where it's getting difficult. I have patreon and I'm going to start taking commissions now, I just hope I can build enough audience to actually start having something substainble
I've always wanted to make comics I've had the characters in my head for like a decade now but I can never decide on a story for them. There world just gets adapted to whatever I'm obsessed with at the time. It kinda makes me sad knowing these characters are probably gonna die with me never having a story.
Maybe think about your characters' fears and dreams (as Lavendertowne said) and make conflict from it If your character is a bully who's afraid of getting bullied, for example, give it plot by giving answers to questions like "how did X turn into a bully" or "how do we stop X from bullying" Then get other characters involved, and boom, plot
hmm maybe you could make their story involve travelling to different worlds, so their setting, outfits and even story changes a lot whenever they jump to a new place. I don't know what it is you already have established, though, so sorry if this isn't applicable at all.
If i cant decide on a set story for a character(s) then i make AUs of these characters in twisted versions of their original story. This works for me since each story i write is part of a long timeline of how earth got hecked up by a big alien force. Theres also 2 versions of this timeline so I dont have to stick with one version of the story.
I have had this story idea for years now. It’s extremely hard for me to put ideas down in my head to comic or even written form. The motivation advice is really good. it makes characters feel more fluid and alive. If a character(s) don’t have a goal or motivation it’s kind of hard to fill in the rest. Thank you for hte advice~

Pro tip: Build a buffer. The bigger, the better. I know it's tempting to release a page as soon as you make it, but that buffer will give you lots of flexibility. Even if you get sick or have an emergency, you can still schedule consistent uploads because you made pages in advance.

My advice (I've been working on my own series for a few years now) but know what kind of story you want to do. A lot of people do slice of life because usually its just short stories. But if you want something more like one piece or naruto, or any long running series, plan it out. Develop your series, do some short stories to experiment, and go from there. Short stories are good to figure out characters and to experiment without committing, then when you're satisfied, go from there. It's easy to just jump into a comic thinking you'll hit it big, but take time to develop it because it's easy to underestimate what goes into it and you'll be happier with the end product just by putting in a bit more time to develop it. You'll find elements that can really elevate your story in ways you hadn't thought of before.
I got to say this is awsome but the one thing I always wondered is even when small artist such as myself post daily to weekly, with a wide range of content with consistent quality and quantity how does one promote themselves without having to worry about shady pay for follows cause they always bothered me when I first started out as a comic maker and youtuber. I wanna be me make art with big ambitions and little budget.
As much as it sucks, I suggest focusing on fanart with doing your art on the side. Fanart draws in people familiar with it, while your personal art is only applicable to those that understand it. I post weekly videos and while personal art gets max 5 views (I suspect from my small friend group) a piece of fanart I drew got 78 views in under a week. It also added two new subs who liked my art style and wanted to stick around. Slowly filter out the fanart and replace it with your own art. It sorta sucks but it's part of the grind x-x
@@JadeAnnabelArt I've recently decided to try this and my biggest fan art goals are pokemon and anime , possibly just every Fandom I like and is popular

I started planning what is now my own graphic novel back in 2010. I realized in about 2011 that I wanted it to be a graphic novel, I went to art school (unrelated) in 2012, had to drop out in 2015, I kept experimenting with media until about 2019 when I finally settled on traditional linework and pixel art for the color work. I've been chipping away at it seriously since late, late 2020. With work, it's going to take absolutely yeeeeeaaaaarrrrrrs, but being even more motivated into the second year feels great. Reach for the stars! There can probably never be enough graphic novels and comic books!
Thank you! You're genuinely helping me learn more than I thought I'd ever learn! You make it so much easier to improve my work and how to go about this. Thank you so much!!!
Seeing your success is so inspiring as a young comic artist, seeing someone in a similar position as me with so much to do but their love of the story they tell motivates them to continue working really hard to create something they love. I'd love to make webtoon a full-time job at one point, but in the meantime, your stuff inspires me to keep working and try to be the absolute best I can be.
It's scary how she manages to line anything in procreate. I worship anyone who even does such a thing so often, it's like lining on MS paint; no stabilizer.
honestly i line without a stabiliser usually but in procreate there is a way to stabilise your lines! there’s a streamline setting in the brush settings, and that’s basically the stabiliser!
“For a first comic, do something short” Me, look at my undertale fancomic : “... oh well.” More seriously, i see what you mean with the lack of motivation. I’m drawing two pages a week, i put all the energy i find in it, and after one year each page still do less than 100 views... Also, I’m happy to hear you say that the line art is what takes the more time, I thought it was just me who was very slow! Great video, like always, you are someone I really look up to!
@@saritaart2103 Hey! it's "What do I want?", I put it on DA and tumblr. And my profile name is the same than my youtube one, Clopans. Thanks for asking!
Could you please make a video about names? This is my biggest struggle, I've been thinking about starting a comic for a while now but I've been stuck on the names of the characters and also the title name of the comic.
One thing I think is worth mentioning is that on the most popular webcomic platforms (tapas, webtoon) traditional page-after-page comic format (emulating how you'd do it in printed magazines) are actually not the preferred format. Unfamiliar is quite "against the fashion" in that it isn't in the so-called "long strip format" but in the aforementioned traditional ready-to-print page format. Not that you shouldn't make it so if you want to, but it's worth keeping in mind that webtoon/naver style long strip comics can be faster to make (you don't need to care as much about panel size or placement) and be more popular, especially among mobile device users. This is actually a possible video idea, heh ("long strip comic vs traditional comic"?)

Oh my god this helped so much. I’ve been brainstorming a story idea for around a year now and it’s been my entire life. The problem was I didn’t know how to start scripting- or drawing it- or when to begin that process. But now with this video my motivation has sky rocketed- I still have a bit to do before scripting- I have some designs that are still iffy but I’m so much more prepared to start now. Thank you so much!! You’re such an inspiration!
This is AWESOME! I really do want to make a webcomic someday. and seriously, that advice about building motivation as a skill is HUGE. it's so hard and not talked about much but it's SOOOO true. continuing things is a skill. feeling distracted or unmotivated is completely normal and it doesn't mean you're not cut out for it. it's something all the greats had to work through. also oooh 5:20 I love that goat character. Unfamiliar video !! :D
Unfamiliar is genuinely such a good comic. It’s so pretty and the backgrounds are cool and the character relationships are so sweet :]
There's no romantic relationship in the comic. If there is then it's probably the ghost and the detective. But their story ended a long time ago

I didn’t even know you had a webtoon until now, so I’ll definitely have to go and read it.
It's very cute i really recommend!!

Ever since I was young I had a talent for making stories and illustrating them, but for some reason I just fell out of love with it. I’m practicing my drawing skills and trying to develop my own style, so maybe in the future I can expand on my talent.
If you hate your handwriting, Blambot.com (run by a Marvel Comics letterer) has lettering fonts indie artists can use for free.
As a career comics letterer (mainly for translated manga) and artist, I second the “make your own font for your comic” advice, and you definitely explained why very well!

I've been posting my web manga to Webtoon and just hit my two year anniversary. I'm super happy because I finally got a patreon subscriber and it's the first time I've made money because of my comic specifically! Don't get discouraged! No matter how long it takes!
Your comic is so beautiful and well executed. The storyline, the art it’s all just so gorgeous and inspiring. ❤️
Tysm ^^
I love your webcomic! I would love to know how to make a comic, especially since I got a comic set for Christmas
Don’t think like that, I believe you can make them into a comic.
Maybe base their stories off of a song?
Maybe think about your characters' fears and dreams (as Lavendertowne said) and make conflict from it
If your character is a bully who's afraid of getting bullied, for example, give it plot by giving answers to questions like "how did X turn into a bully" or "how do we stop X from bullying"
Then get other characters involved, and boom, plot
hmm maybe you could make their story involve travelling to different worlds, so their setting, outfits and even story changes a lot whenever they jump to a new place.
Oh my god this is literally a minute ago and mostly everybody comes here well at least 25 people
I recently started reading unfamiliar like one week ago, and i like it so much that I finish it in one day
I have had this story idea for years now. It’s extremely hard for me to put ideas down in my head to comic or even written form. The motivation advice is really good. it makes characters feel more fluid and alive. If a character(s) don’t have a goal or motivation it’s kind of hard to fill in the rest. Thank you for hte advice~

"Finishing things is a muscle you can strengthen."
Me, with ADHD: I don't think I can ever strengthen that muscle. I just have to invent ways to make the project interesting again, or feel capable of finishing it.
Same
As a small youtuber with ADHD, I think you shud try writing all your ideas before you pick out which one to finish. Ive been struggling with how to write my stories for Years. So i decided to stick to character studies than convoluted and high stakes comics
@@noobmasterruben5167 That's good idea, especially since I really don't have the energy to do larger projects right now.
@@duckling2108 hi i have adhd it makes me super creative but i would rather not have it because im a mess who wants to be organised but every time i try to organise the mess it gets messier. everything is jumbled and out of place and my thoughts feel like a 5 way venn diagram. theres so many things i want to do all the time and i forget shit constantly so i always get in trouble for being lazy when i forgot to clean my room or feed the dogs or do chores. the choice of art mediums stresses me out because how do i know which one to use or which art style to stick with. but im a great conversationalist, i have amazing ideas and i learn things im interested in SUPER quick. im REALLY efficient when im focused.

Congratulations Lav! (I'm also wondering if you can make an archive for your old twitch stream, I would really, really love that. But really, congratulations!)
It seems like all your videos come out at the best times! I got a surface pro for Christmas so now i can draw digitally, and I really make a comic and this was super helpful!! Love your videos 💞
Pro tip: Build a buffer. The bigger, the better. I know it's tempting to release a page as soon as you make it, but that buffer will give you lots of flexibility. Even if you get sick or have an emergency, you can still schedule consistent uploads because you made pages in advance.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! On march 20th it will be my one year anniversary of when I first started planning out my webcomic! I've been planning stuff out every day since, and this video was pretty helpful so thanks!
I've been trying to figure out how to make a webcomic for the story most of my ocs are from for almost a year now and this video is just,, amazing,, I'm gonna start working on it better tomorrow along with getting my room sorted out better which would definitely help with my focus but thank you so much for this video
Im guessing ya just gotta sell ur soul and hop on trends or u could do dtiys

Congrats on all them readers! Here's to many more!
I was literally just making my comic and then LavenderTowne posts! Thank youuu!!!
Is there or will there ever be a physical (paper) copy of Unfamiliar?

That’s a success story if I’ve ever heard one!
I READ YOUR ENTIRE COMIC IN ONE DAY AND MY EYES ARE BLESSD.
I remeber when I use to watch her two or three years ago she's still the best drawer ever :)
This is gonna help me so much with the comic I'm planning on making, thank you so freaking much!!❤
It's scary how she manages to line anything in procreate.
I worship anyone who even does such a thing so often, it's like lining on MS paint; no stabilizer.
honestly i line without a stabiliser usually but in procreate there is a way to stabilise your lines! there’s a streamline setting in the brush settings, and that’s basically the stabiliser!
“For a first comic, do something short”
Me, look at my undertale fancomic : “... oh well.”
More seriously, i see what you mean with the lack of motivation. I’m drawing two pages a week, i put all the energy i find in it, and after one year each page still do less than 100 views...
Also, I’m happy to hear you say that the line art is what takes the more time, I thought it was just me who was very slow!
Great video, like always, you are someone I really look up to!
Hey what's the name of your webcomic?
I love ur comic !! And I’m so proud ✨💜🌸

Lavender town is so cool she’s my everything I love her so much and she is my inspiration
I'm a sucker for character designs with more than two eyes, and horns.
also 7:44 that background song... it's so familiar (ha) but I can't place it!!! I wish LavenderTowne would list the songs she uses in the description haha
