How NOT to Create a Webtoon or Manga

  • In this video I take a retrospective look on my past. I VoD reviewed my manga/webtoons to see how bad they were. Spoiler Alert: they're very bad. I go over why I think these projects failed and give solutions and remedies to fix them. Use my failures as stepping stones for your own journey. I walked so you guys could ride planes.
    ----
Long video, I didn't expect it to take this long to make. Also, a lot of PoPPing Ps because I ate my mic while recording this and I didn't want to rerecord it. RIP headphone users, but a win for ASMR lovers I guess...
    Utsurou Kanojo: shonenjumpplus.com/episode/14...
(it's in JP obviously, maybe somebody has translated it... maybe, I haven't checked. If not and you can't read Japanese... idk just enjoy the pictures I guess.)

I find that focusing on how characters react to situations makes the writing process a whole lot easier. Don't think things like "this character has to do this thing". Instead, think "how would this character react to this and where would that lead them". You should also constantly remind yourself what the story is really about. Why are you telling it in the first place?

About the first point that you've made
this is one of the most important lessons that you need to understand, "art isn't the the literal embodiment of your thoughts and emotions, it's a language you *USE* to represent them". or to simplify it, your art is NOT literally you. not understanding this will lead you to a lot of confusion and a very unhealthy sense of perfectionism, which may lead you to the end of your short art journey. I mean, for example you didn't even release your first story.
For me, it was such a harsh truth to internalize, but I'm happy that I moved forward from it.

While I already knew the things you talked about in this video, I still appreciate that you made it. It's one thing to repeatedly hear the same mantras about making comics, but it really puts it into perspective when you add your own personal experience to reinforce them. I think people focus way too much on "how to succeed", instead of learning "how not to fail" (and this doesn't apply only to making art). Everybody wants to know the secret formula to success, but nobody wants to hear the failure stories of people just like them, with the same grand ambitions and revolutionary ideas.
Anyway, I know that your videos don't get many views, so you might feel like you're making them for nobody. But you took part in saving the world from seeing at least one more poorly thought out comic story.

Im not the greatest at drawing, but i know i can pump out a couple pages a day if i got back on track. what matters to me when creating a story, is to make sure it has a strong and fun concept. One punch man's author isn't the greatest at drawing (talking about One, not Murata, obviously) , but it got picked up because of the awesome concept that was never really done before. I really like your suds idea! I imagine that to have it be like Food Wars it can be something ridiculously insular, like MC ie "New Guy" finds out that Dishwashing is like a Sport among the other dishwashers at his workplace. He's just trying to keep his head down, but working as a Dishwasher *sucks* and there's this whole elusive "Dishwasher of the Month" title and he thinks that maybe he'd move up to Line cook if he gets Dishwasher of the Month. So he decides to compete. Throw in a girl dishwasher, a group of goofy friends and a really heart wrenching reason why MC is a dishwasher in the first place and you got yourself a manga!

When I encountered the issue of philosophy while working on games, I burned out on it; you can spend endless amounts of time on technology as a way of running away from making the game cohere. Gradually I figured out a teachable strategy, which is to draw up the different elements on a Venn diagram. The diagram has the technical stuff of "what the work needs to have in it to be a finished piece of writing, visuals, gameplay, etc." In the middle, it all overlaps. For the work to make sense, the overlap has to involve something principled in nature. If there is a contradiction in the diagram it turns into a blocking issue with the details. Every good story, every popular game can be mapped out on a diagram this way: Mario is "about running and jumping" because every part of the design engages with those things. If you know what's being said, you don't need a lot of scope in the work - that just reflects how much you want to try expanding the diagram to cover more things in more detail.
The five-page fan comic I've been working on lately has moved very slowly, in part because I'm pushing up my drawing standards as I go along, but also because I'm too aware of this stuff.

In short, making comics/manga/webtoons is hard :')
However, it's really worth it! I've made some short comics in the past and then did a long form one that I posted online (on DA). I never finished it partly due to life issues but some of the things mentioned here affected it was well.
Something that I found helpful and may be helpful to others is to learn writing. Not only writing for comics/manga, but writing in general. There is a lot of info on here, as well, so you don't actually need to pay anything to get started. General info for writing is completely transferable to this medium, so a lot of their methods will be really useful.
Another thing that you may find useful is making shorter stories before jumping onto larger ones. That's something that I'm going to go back into as well. Not only because it will give you a better idea of what this process entails and how to wrap up a story, but having a finished piece of work will give you a boost unlike any other :)

the advice here is really awesome and helpful! thanks a lot :D I was thinking maybe a cool theme for your story about the dishwashers could lead to the dilemma of choosing to do something you love between being with someone you love, like he loves his job as a dishwasher, but in order to talk to the waitress he has to have a different occupation which leads him to overcome challenges as he decides what he wants best, and learn new things about himself. In the end, he could learn instead of picking and choosing, he could find a way to both pursue what he loves and be with who he loves or something in that manner.

I went through a similar process with my first comic back in 2018/2019. I wanted to make a one shot in the last month of summer in 2018 (or was it 2017?) and it somehow ended up being 72 pages. It didn't take me until 2019 to "finish" the storyboards of it and finish drawing 1/3 of it before giving up and just deciding to release it all on tapas. Since then, I haven't made a comic nor have I drawn much aside from character sheets that I used to post on twitter.

I wanted to give advice on storywriting since I feel like I've improved a lot in that field and also share the same experience as you do, but I haven't gotten to a point where I could find the time to make and publish my own story, so until I actually have the commitment and confidence to publish my first manga, I'll just save it. I'll be back once I finally make a concrete progress to back up my advice.
Edit: One tiny advice that I can give without feeling guilty, though, is character building. Understand the difference between a three-dimensional character and a two-dimensional character, pretend like you're the character you're writing on and think of what you'd do if you were them.

But. Buuuut there must be a lot of mistakes I can't predict before I get into the work. Because of that, I want to step on the mine field with a small project, setting aside the magnum opus that lives in my head rent free for more than three years now. And I can't come up with any ideas. I can't think of anything. I'm just not inspired, I love the project that is too big to pull off yet, but I really don't want it to fail.

yoo we're like same lmao, i was in the exact same boat.. until recently.. like i cannot get my story out of my head like i Need to write it but i dont wanna mess it up with my lack of knowledge... but i had an epiphany. my current plan is to write a short AU of my story with my main characters living completely different lives (ex. fantasy world -> modern high school, or futuristic sci fi -> victorian era, etc etc) , that way it still feels like working on the main story bc it helps flesh out characters and play around with their dynamics and relationships and gauge their reactions to different scenarios without the pressure of constantly planning and worrying about how every little thing that happens could potentially interfere with my future story. it could be a bit confusing to readers who read both but it should be fine as long as you clarify that they're completely different universes and neither are canon to the other, and also change up names and designs a bit so they're harder to confuse when talking about / drawing them

you can definitely see the improvement you've made over time. The scrubs idea sounds great. Also maybe you should have an editor help with problems you have. I've started to help people with their stories and give them advice on what they should consider, add, or change. I mention the confusing parts and they try to find a way to fix it. Editors are just readers who help you get the vision that is in your head onto paper to make others understand the story as you do. if you don't have anyone in mind to help I don't mind being the one to help you. I write scripts and draw so I know more than the basic knowledge of manga making because I also want to be a mangaka. I'm currently helping about 4 different people at the moment with their stories while working on mine. I see it as practice so I'm doing it for free because I feel like it will give me a better understanding of writing.

      1. Open google chrome.
      2. Login to your webtoons account.
      3. Click the three dots in chromes top right corner, “request desktop site” (if you’re on mobile version. )
