- On October 25th, 2008, 425 hauled a group of railfans along the R&N's system from Port Clinton to as far as White Haven, stopping for photo runbys along the way. The weather was wet, cold, and miserable, but it made for many interesting scenes of steam working hard in the rain.
Also note the whistle #425 is wearing in this video - the Boston and Maine 6-chime steptop. This is the whistle #425wore during the Grand Opening at Steamtown in 1995. Personally I love it's mournful undertones more than any other whistle I've heard on the engine so far.

Special Thanks to the folks at the Reading & Northern for running this trip (Tyler Glass, Steve Gilbert) www.readingnorthern.com
Thanks to Christopher and Andrew Blaszczyk for navigation.
425 needs to wear this whistle again. One of my favorites of all time and one of my favorite whistles the 425 has worn. Great video Joe
Thank you. Yeah, I’d love to hear it on the engine again. Such a sweet, almost somber sound. Many whistles are loud and commanding, and many are melancholy and mournful, but this B&M is the perfect balance of both.
@@fuscoproductions yes this one just has a unique sound to it that makes it sound so cool. You perfectly described it.
@@GTRailFanProductions guess what this goddess wore for Borough day?
It's also my favorite to the southern lever top 6 chime and the Southern pacific 6 chime
@@ThunderTrain2930 the B&M 6 chime.
Driver was probably texting."Gee...I think I hear a...." CRAAAASSSHHHH!
6:26 425’s B&M 6 Chime with low frequency sounded really good
It is a Boston & Maine whistle... it has "B&M" stamped on the side of the whistle.
i like it so munch
Does the R&N still have it?
@@BenBensonStudios yep! They just haven’t put it on in quite some time.
This is what B&M #3713 would sound like this!
Yep
that whistle is the sound of heaven
In deed - one of my all time favorite whistles.
@@fuscoproductions me too
Same here.
Ya
Yes! They should fit it on 3713 when she returns to steam.
A grower whistle , means it has a low tone pitch sound.
All of us who chased the 425/2102 in the 1990's always referred it as a B&M grower.
Len.
Alright! The B&M whistle is back. I still remember the sound of this whistle when i was a little kid! Great video! Hope to hear this beautiful sounding whistle on some more trips next year!!!
Cape Rails Productions
I hate to disappoint you, but the Frederickson brothers tell me that they've sold that whistle. In its place is a Southern Pacific 6 Chime whistle. I hope they're joking. That whistle is a railfan favorite.
Max Medaglia Well where they?
Joe this is awsome. Even though the weather sucked, its neat to see the footage of the engine in the rain! I find it funny with the close call in the car. I had the same thing happen to me at TVRM! Keep up the great work, I hope to get up there one of these days and film with ya!
Joe this is hands down one if my favorite videos of yours. I only hope someday we get that lucky again to hear it.
The best whistle for the 425!!! I hope this whistle is on it when I chase it this fall!!!
4:56 he was almost shocked, what kind of idiot happens to be able to beat 425 in that way it would be an accident
#425: Get out of my way (Foxy)!
@@atlantis0v-104 Are you seriously bashing Foxy? He was trying to point out that someone would be stupid enough to beat the train to a crossing would’ve met his or her fate!
But please never try to beat steam trains cuz they hate that
@@T128Productions yeah
According to Sources, this is the B&M 6 Chime From Boston and Maine P4 #3710, one of 3713's Scrapped Relatives
No it isn't
@@andreabertrand4543 Hey, don’t you dare get even with this guy. Anyway, I thought I knew it was 3713, but I was wrong. In truth, I really didn’t know until now this whistle came off of #3710.
@@T128Productions Really? You sure?
alright, they put the B&M 6 chime on. yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa man!!!!!!!!!!!
I was filming right next to you at the Glen Onoko cut. That moron you caught in the SUV at Nesquehoning crossing is about as close as I have seen to a collision! I have seen cars get caught between gates but this was scary.
Real nice video.
That's a really good whistle, and I'm not a big 6 chime guy, and you could tell the engineer thought he was gonna hit the idiot in the jeep.
Whelp news has finally come out that 3713 will get its much needed restoration. Can't wait to hear this whistle back on its own locomotive.
3713 is never going to be completed.
@@BenBensonStudios Never say never
Excellent video and great production. Keep 'em coming!
It says in the description.
"Also note the whistle #425 is wearing in this video - the Boston and Maine 6-chime steptop. This is the whistle #425wore during the Grand Opening at Steamtown in 1995. Personally I love it's mournful undertones more than any other whistle I've heard on the engine so far. "
The reason 425 was slipping was because of the wet weather and her sanding pipe was jammed (They got it fixed after she slipped severely).
i loved the closing shot at TMQ very well done
Very very impressive!!! Great work!
Great video! IDIOT driving the Jeep! Interesting hybrid whistle. B&M top on a Hancock Inspirator bottom. Nice, deep sound in contrast to the Reading 6-chime, itself one beautiful whistle!
I've heard this whistle many many times through out the 1990's, they also had that same whistle on the 02 for a few trips.
and for the thumbs down up on my other post, if you don't belived that I requested the whistle, just call Tyler Glass up at R&N. I requested on October 11th.
Len.
No doubt the engineer inserted Chase Utley's "world champions" expletive between "you" and "idiot"! ;-)
My Jeep would never try to outrun a train - I'd stop and happily watch it pass.
One of the most awesome steam whistles anywhere !!!
It Was So Cool Seeing 425 Sliping On The Wet Tracks.
Terrific video! Beautiful engine, superb locations and lovely trees! (Oh! and what appears to be the obligatory idiot in a car at a crossing!)
Apart from the rain, looked like a lot of fun!
5* Thanks for sharing.
@wwrr98 thats an original, i'll be shocked if MD decides to replicate this one too.
I'd love to see this whistle back on the 425 soon
Love this whistle
Its like talking to a wall....... Also what the heck is a B&M grower?
1:50 sounds awsome.
1:50
Someone just crossed in front of a Steam locomotive at 4:56
Also, I think they need some gates at the crossing!
they can still go around or break through the gates in their haste.
Incredible video, Mr. Fusco. This is just perfect. I was wondering -- what equipment do you use? I mean - the editing and the video quality are astonishing.
Thanks for uploading this, every railfan who watches this is proud!
Jim
The guy who needs help in the jeep came pretty close at 4:57 from being hit with a steam engine he would of been toast....
To each, it's own.
Len
Well I'm glad I wasn't the only one that chased the homeward move. I'm glad to see you got that stupid jerk that almost got hit on tape. I was talking with Chad at Port Clinton that night, and he ask if I saw the jeep that almost got nailed. I said no, because I was waiting up at the fire truck builder. Very nice video Joe.
See you at T&T next weekend.
Len.
Great Vid, I would have laughed if that jeep got smashed but I wouldn't want the paint on 425 get scratched HAHAHA
Moparmadman69
In case you didn't know, that happened in Jim Thorpe last September.
4:55 some people are so F***ING ignorant😡! There could've been an accident.
425 hitted a car at the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway this Year.
Yeah it does, that was a cool shot.
some car drivers can be a pain in the ass like stoping when a train comes in this video.
4:53 dam car didn't care
Nice video! What an idiot for driving right in front of the train. 1 second later and that guy would have learned his lesson!
This train trip was too darn expensive. $200 a person. I didn't do it. I might do the Tunkhannock 425 excursion this May 19, 2009. It's $69 a person.
Blue Jeep in front of "Four and a Quarter"... (facepalm) The driver is THAT stupid.... other than that stupid move, the video is GREAT!
Is that an original B&M 6-Chime or the MD Whistles replica? All the replica ones never seem to be this loud. Great video :)
its an original
Cape Rails Productions Would love to see that whistle being put on #3713 at Steamtown like this!
+brian falzon The have a B&M 6 Chime for 3713 already, should sound great..
Ryan Seals Yes, it should indeed.
She is out of service now, been out the whole year. Hopefully be back mid-2012.
Ye
Flash forward to 2022 and #2102 is back. But what about #425? Out of service again? Probably for inspection again, I really don’t know.
STACK TALK!!!!
What on earth was the driver at 4:55 thinking?
Either oblivious or a reckless!
People these days, man. That driver should be labeled as a Grade A idiot. I don't know how they passed Driver's Ed.
I’ve always wondered. How many whistles. Does one engine. Friggin need? I mean, they all sound great in their own ways, but man there’s a lot.
An engine only needs one, really. But the guys at the R&N have a huge collection of whistles and like to try them all out for fun. :-)
I'm vying that whistle
nice vid would been cool to see the jeep get hit but really nice vid of 425
Great
reading and northern 425 almost got killed!!!!
425 wouldn't have gotten killed, but the people in the car she nearly hit might've...
They HAVE to put gates at that crossing, because one day... a loco is going to get very damaged
@Engineer5344 MD has had one made....1 year ago
@PereMarquette1223 ... well, that and some people were saying she was out of service
I bet that’s the same driver that got in the way of the train in 2016
see the fucko of the day at 4:54? Completely ignores the locomotive, probaly talking or texting on his cellphone or listening to stupid rap on ipod! yes theres no gate ot lights but you shuld bee completly unaware of your surroundings! even going over tracks that look like they haven't been used in years. Love the 6 chime!
can't drivers just stop look and listen before they cross other wise you'll get run over by a big locomotive.
@PereMarquette1223 when? I know she didnt do her fall trips...
Who's that aimed at?
The blue SUV at 5:00??????
4:55 actually. And, it’s a Jeep.
4:55 Why do some people break the rules. There could've been an accident there.
425 hitted a car when she was backwards at the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway in September 2017.
4:50
That person was stupid for almost causing a crash!!!!
Exactly what type of whistle is this?
Duh, it says so in the description.
Boston & Maine 3713 or 3710's Whistle
People please don’t ever do this 4:55
0:01
wow, there are dumb people in this world, on a positive note, i love this loco. To bad she's out of service :'(
Hey Flue, I know who I spoke with and I have witness and I know you didn't call Tyler because he wouldn't told you that. Tyler is an honest person, not like you. So do us all a favor and stop making trouble.
Len.
@@stuartadamsrailfanningvideos So it took you 12 years to tell me this, what a complete joke.
That was a great video, but the 425 was sliping on the tracks, that is not good. All in all it was great. I HOPE THEY CATCH THAT IDIOT THAT RAN THE CORSSING. LOOKS LIKE HE OR SHE NEEDS A LEASON ABOUT RAILROAD SAFETY!
Didn't see that, sorry.
