For the first time since her 2007 rebuild, Reading & Northern 4-6-2 #425 pulled one of the annual Autumn Leaf Excursions without diesel assistance. These trains are usually 14 cars long, and #425 can't handle that much tonnage on the steep climb north of Tamaqua. Even with a shorter 8-car train, engineer Chris Bost fights to keep the power to the rails, as #425 climbs away from the Little Schuylkill River after passing through Tamaqua Tunnel.

By itself, the fact that we get an in-cab ride with the wheelslip and incredible stack music should put this into everybody's YT algorithm. And 425's whistle. This is wicked good.
Steam locomotive wheels slip is the most satisfying thing to watch and listen to. In the cab it’s a whole different story! Kudos to the crew for keeping her moving
Ffff
Great footage of a magnificent steam locomotive. Always been impressed with American steam power from afar. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia.
I have used the Reading Line in 1963 going to the U of Penn from Pottstown for my MS degree in engineering at Penn. .I was working for NEAPCO in Pottstown as young engineer from 7:00AM to 3:00PM shift and then to Philly untill 10:00PM classes and then back to Pottstown for study and sleep.
Very productive and beautiful years
I saw this beautiful locomotive in 2015, it was an amazing experience.
Chris, Shane and Ryan are a killer crew!
That far away chugging, awnnn man, that’s BEAUTIFUL, no, that’s FANTASTICALLY SPLENDID.
Great video! No music, just the natural sounds.
Excellent clip. Refreshing to see steam unassisted, a real rarity these days. The engineer did well considering the slippery conditions...leaf fall is a major hazard for any locomotive seeking traction. 👍👍👍
You could see him hosing the sand on near the end of the clip...It's pretty neat what you can do when you own both the RR and the locomotive.
Ben Richards ...So he owns the loco huh? I guess if you love steam and you can afford it, what better way to spend your money?
The owner of the railroad also owns this locomotive, but he's NOT the engineer in this video. Nor is he the fireman or anyone else in the cab.
Yes, sorry for the pronoun ambiguity. The owner is Andy Muller. He is not in any of the crew footage in this video.
Good show! White smoke, NOT black billowing clouds to impress the kids. Great fireman! Even climbing uphill! And NO BANJOS! Thank you! Just great steam sounds!
Locomotive 425, I bet lots of people want to ride that train
to say I just like this video would be an understatement. I love this video and it was an AWESOME trip! Best money I ever spent!
Great video! Love the cab shots!! I was chasing that day as well and she put on one hell of a show clawing over the mountain. The crew did a fantastic job!
Is there a map online or a list of locations as to where i can chase 425 this year? just curious because it looks like a very complex route based on google maps
That driver knows his stuff! And the regulator is set up just right to give true fingertip control. Well done to all concerned.
Hand firing? Unusual on a US loco but nice to see!
#425 (built by Baldwin in 1928) was built without a mechanical stoker and I don't think R&N saw fit to have one installed. Most older US coal-fired engines are hand-fired, however.
But bigger engines like the Reading T-1 #2102 require a mechanical stoker.
I wonder why she was slipping? She can carry the load, was it on a Grade? But the engineer had her moving well with the slippage
@@Lil_Pennsy The locomotive was indeed on a grade.
always loved 4-6-2 steamers
And that kids is why people LOVE Steam Locomotive's!!!!

They are my most favorite locomotive.
I've never been on a steam Locomotives before, how's it like?
Добрый вам день Уважаемый Автор этого замечательного видео спасибо вам огромное за это прекрасное видео вы Просто Молодец отличное Видео с Уважением К вам Катя Ушакова!!!😍😍😍😍
Wow, from spectacular footage of the train coming, to cab riding, and back, great job!
Beautiful to watch this
What a fantastic sight and sound bring them all back
I like the color of the locomotive, and the whistle.
This is a very fine video!
I wanna see 425’s sister 225 moving on the line again
What loco is #225 ? Do you mean 2102 ?
Chase Withrow 225 is another steam locomotive
@@chasewithrow4008 225 is on display. It’s ex-Canadian Pacific 4-6-0 #1098.
Excellent video. So cool to see and hear the sounds. Thank you.
A great video, i know it took alot of work into making it! good ground shots, and cab shots . could have had some voice narration.or inside coach shots, but stiil, super job!
That behind the engineer view looking down the side of the engine was the best shot I've ever seen. He was pouring the sand to er coming up the grade trying to keep the wheels from spinning.
AWSOME..AWSOME...AWSOME!!!!!! THE GOOD OLD DAYS"-!?!?!?!? DJB43.....
Awesome coverage.
Green head-end marker lights must be a Pennsylvania thing. The Red Arrow Trolleys of old used them too.
It mean the train is running as an " extra" not a regular scheduled run on that line
@@chasewithrow4008 Green lights mean "Section following" - white means Extra.
WE "LOVE" (LUV) "STEAM LOCO'S) BECAUSE THERE "OLD" LIKE US!!!!!!!!!! DJB43-!!!!!!! 03/29/1943-!!!!! OOOOOH-YAAAAAaaaaaa!!!!
How about a 1551/90/425 tripleheader excursion to Illinois? That'll be awesome after they lift the ban on steam excursions!
awesome train video
Beautiful, doesn't get any better than that.🤠👍
Cool sounds and videos
i live need Pottsville so I see the train alot
fantastic!!!thank you
Excellent video I only wish it was longer especially the cab footage. I was onboard the train and it was spectacular!

What if Strasburg Railroad 90 can doublehead with Reading & Northern 425 on excursion trips to Philadelphia, Harrisburg & Pittsburgh?
Brian Falzon what if that happens in roblox?
@@griggerp that too, yeah!
So what was that surging...wheel slip???
That was wheelslip, 425 from what I can tell is an incredibly powerful locomotive capable of handling the train assigned to her, but she is a passenger locomotive, and the way she was working is just screaming that she was on a grade, rather difficult to keep those large driving wheels in traction. Takes a steady hand on the throttle, which the engineer seems to have mastered upon hearing the slightest hint of slippage, coming up that grade she definitely was on the edge of adhesion, and still managed to keep her momentum going, impressive operating by the engineer here is an understatement.
Crank up your speakers at 4:12!!
Que saudade do meu tempo de criança
At least on this trip thank god there was no diesel pusher
Isso é Amor demais .
Amooo!!!❤️
Hand fired and they’re dealing with that wheelslip? Ouch. That must be a bitch up those grades. No wonder the fireman is seen checking if his fire got sucked up the stack or not
Any reason why they use such short shovels?? Longer shovels would really make that engine easier to fire I think.
sweet whistle
Slippery track kicked the 💩 out of these guys. Couldn't imgaine how it was done in the 40s on the daily.
Is 425 hand fired? It looks like it from the video.
Looks like the sand pipe is shooting most of the sand on the ground
That’s a cool 🚂
0:59 Anyone wonder why that dome car is rarely used on the blue mountain and reading railroad?

6:20 Dude, seriously?!
In Pennsylvania, that's called normal. Guaranteed she was going to get the kids from daycare.
Is it still running in 2019?
Yes. It ran earlier this year.
How come I didn't see this before now? It's Kwel
This train look like a tangiwai
Would you say that the 425 is the loudest steam locomotive in the US?
Lindo 👏👏👏👏👍
😃😃😃👍👍👍😃😃😃
What happened to the stars on the wheels😢
Man, that's a lot of slipping. . .
cellogirl11RW Yes it is !
bravo belle prise de vu
was it uphill the whole trip?
Northbound from PN to Haucks is all uphill. Returning Jim Thorpe to Haucks is uphill as well. It's a great ride both ways!
It's in USA?
Yeah In Pennsylvania
Play at 2x speed
can anyone tell me the location shown around 5:52 of the video. Would love to go there in October
Route 52 just north of East Mahanoy Jtc.
At 7:56 that is the sight of two engineers quietly saying, "ohcrapohcrapohcrapohcrap..."
there isent a 7:56

not to be rude, but the crew really overwork the poor girl. she's a light pacific, not a heavy like a PRR K4s
I disagree. Steam engines were made to work, and they’re working her, goddamnit!
