  • Follow the venerable #425 one last time on the Reading & Northern's annual Christmas trains before it is taken out of service for its federally mandated inspection. In the USA, steam locomotives must be thoroughly disassembled and inspected every 15 years of operation or 1472 service days, whichever comes first. In 425's case, it re-entered service in late 2007, which puts 2022 at the fifteen year mark. These inspections require many components of the locomotive to be stripped down to analyze boiler and firebox thickness, as well as a long list of other components that need to be checked. The amount of work can vary greatly depending on what needs to be replaced or repaired. While it is uncertain how long 425 will remain out of service, one thing that is for sure is that it inspired many people over the last fifteen years of operation. It will always have a special place in my heart - I documented the engine's return to service in December of 2007 ( • Reading & Northern #42... ), so it is fitting I was able to be there on its final day of service on its fifteen-year ticket.
    Here's hoping 425 returns soon.
    In the mean time, let us not forget the Reading & Northern offers excursions with the much larger Reading T-1 #2102. Go out and buy your tickets and support this amazing railroad for going above and beyond.

    I’ve already made a comment down here, but I might as well make another. There have been some rumors going around that this overhaul may only take 6 to 12 months instead of something like a couple years. I found out that in mid 2022, 425 got her smokestack and some other parts replaced. This means they have a head start, since parts like that don’t seem to wear out all too fast. So, it’s possible we may see her running again by late this summer.
    Even if we don’t, I can keep watching this over and over again until it’s done, as it represents all the glory of the 425 anybody needs.

    • @-_Spiral_-
      @-_Spiral_- Рік тому +1

      @@fuscoproductions I’m not sure if I’ll get a response, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to try and ask. Do you know how long these types of overhauls usually take, if the locomotive doesn’t have any obvious problems, of course? Some say it can take 6 months, 2 years, 4 years, even 15 years. But, I’m not sure if any of those are right. For 425, I don’t think it would take 15 years, but maybe I’m not thinking right.

    • @fuscoproductions
      @fuscoproductions  Рік тому +1

      @@-_Spiral_- it is impossible to predict an exact timeline, but I know it is being worked on! It depends on the manpower and money. The R&N has a lot on their hands now with their regular freight operations plus the 2102 that requires a lot of upkeep as well.
      For perspective, 425 went out of service in 1996 and didn’t run again until 2007. While it sat dormant most of that time, the actual “1472” probably took about 2 years. 425 went down again in 2011 and 2012 when it received some more work, and came back in 2013 and ran through 2022. So a couple of years seems to be a reasonable timeframe to expect a reasonable amount of work to be done. But once again, it is not possible to predict exactly how long it will take as you discover more problems as you go.
      The R&N has a talented group of people to do the work. The engine is in good hands.

    That is one heck of an AMAZING video Joe! This was the cherry on the top for 425's last excursion service. At around 10:00, how'd you get that "zoom out" effect so smooth? Did you use it in-post or did you just ever so slowly move the zoom ring on the lens? Also, what microphone do you use? Is it a stereo or mono mic? I'm so sorry to what happened to your dad. You're in my prayers 🙏.

      Hey Aaron, thanks for the kind words! It’s an optical zoom, there is some minor stabilization but I was very careful to turn the zoom ring as smoothly as I could on my 24-105 f4L. I’m using a Zoom H5 for audio, dual system sound synchronized in post. It is stereo. Really glad you liked it! More to come.
