    For anyone who hasn't figured it out, the dryer blower wheel does not come off by turning to the left. Turn it to the right or clockwise to get it off. Thanks for the video! It cost me less than $35.00 to fix the dryer myself.

    The issue of needing to break/cut it off is rather common depending on how old it is. Breaking a new blower normally indicates the new one was over-tightened, something fell into the blower, or the new one was not aligned properly. I hope this helps!

    Thanks for the video. My wife dropped a pencil down the lint filter chute, and this video showed me how to disassemble the back to get to it. Cleaned all the lint and dust from in there, and WOW, my dryer is much quieter now.

    I had a blower wheel that was stuck and I found a trick that worked to remove it. My particular model does not have access to the blower wheel square nut on either side. So, I put a vice grip on the far end of the motor shaft where the hex head is located. I braced the handle of the vice grip against the bottom of the dryer's sheet metal housing and cushioned the contact with an everyday news magazine. Looking from the blower end, the wheel needs to turn clockwise to loosen. So I slowly rotated the wheel counter-clockwise as far as possible, and then quickly spun it clockwise. When the vice grip handle struck the magazine, the wheel's inertia successfully broke the fan loose from the motor shaft. All parts were intact and I removed the blower wheel.

      I replaced a motor some time ago, and I honestly can't tell when. Anyway, recently I replaced a second motor, and I looked at the fan and it was worn away, rough cut so that the edges of what must have been a "square nut" are gone. I vaguely remember that I had trouble with the fan, probably got a bit angry, and did what needed doing so I couold move on. The dryer and washing machine are located in a niche in my bathroom, and there is not much extra room for accessing the front AND the back of the dryer. I must move the dryer around and squeeze between to get around so in this cramped area I can become impatient with the dance. Also , there are two versions of DIY for removing the fan, and unfortunately, the other video is no solution at all and I suspect that the guy did what I did the first time I dealt with the fan. I broke it because I couldn't figure out how to remove it properly and I just wanted the job done. In his video he claims that he imagines the viewers don't want to waste time watching him using a piece of wood to bang on the fan blades and loosen the fan. So he does it after he has already loosened it. This time, I watched that bogus advice AGAIN, and I figured it out: He probably did the same thing I did and just busted the fan; then bought a new one! Well, regardless, I wish he would edit his video, because he fails to give the proper method for removing the fan. Why did I round off the edges? Must have had a reason, and I doubt that I enjoyed the improvisation. The parts store is not convenient, so after a few days of this rigmarole and the potential threat that I will end up doing something so wrong that I end up buying a new dryer ANYWAY, the DIY honeymoon is over. My enjoyable challenge "money-maker" project becomes the nagging duty. This time, after multiple various repairs to this twenty-year-old (plus?) Whirlpool, I look forward to this dryer humming along again as it should, and I will have several hundred dollars available for something else.
      Thanks for the good info here, and I wonder why there are models with fans that are more dificult to deal with?
      It is what it is. Good day. Good PREZ!

    Thanks. My 1972 Sears dryer, the blower wheel stripped inside the plastic where it joins a molded in nut. I had to drill and cut it off. Then remove the molded in nut. Looking at the nut are these tiny formed ridges, which were not enough to hold it to the plastic over the years from spinning separately from the plastic wheel. So an easy job turned into a tough one. But the wheel looks identical to these newer dryers.

    The blower didn't have the optional deceased rodent like mine did.
    BTW I'd avoid WD-40 on plastic parts, it can decompose them. There's another penetrant called PB B'laster that works great and doesn't harm plastics. Home Depot has it for under $4

    @fundipp73 Every time the motor starts it tightens the blower wheel so this can be difficult. No tricks to it, just have to really turn the blower wheel to get it loose from the motor shaft.

    I tried to unthread the blower wheel from the motor and I have no tension on it. It actually seems like they are almost 2 independent shafts. I can lock it down on the front and the back bolt just spins. If I try to take the blower wheel off it just spins. It is very wobbly but will not release. ANY help would be appreciated.

    • @repairclinic
      @repairclinic  9 років тому +1

      Jake T Your blower wheel may have come loose from the pressed-in mounting hub. You may have to break off the old blower to get to the threaded hub to turn it. Note that most blower wheels are left hand thread, which means you have to turn to the right or clockwise to remove it.

      You forgot to mention that blower wheel is attached to threaded motor shaft, which is a left handed thread. No rights tightly. You remove by gripping pulley with wrench, gripping blower plastic hub, then force wrench on pulley clockwise, or toward inside cabinet, to break loose. Otherwise, you'll struggle with removing wheel and eventually breaking, adding a new wheel to your motor replacement job. Hogges Home Service Inc. You're welcome.

    as has already been mentioned, PLEASE add a graphic or dub an instruction to state that the thread of the blower wheel is left-handed. A newbie do-it-yourselfer may not think of this feature for this job. How frustrated would you be to do all this work, in a cramped environment, to find out you can't get the wheel off, or worse yet break it before you find out what you've done. It is not enough to just "see" and figure out that you're turning the nut backwards. SHOW A GRAPHIC!
