  • Great stove. I failed at curing it properly originally and I'll tell you all about it. Also, keep in mind the damper is not demoed in this simply, because it was not included in the box by accident. I show you the unboxing and how to set up the stove as well as the features and how well it worked on a freezing cold Cache Valley Utah night with snow. Very happy with the stove and the Kodiak 6170 Lodge Tent it is demonstrated in. If you have any questions or if I missed something in the video please comment below and I'll respond best I can. Thanks for watching.

    I took your advice on the stove burn in, thank you. I let the temperature get up to 700 degrees for a little while. Now both the stove and the first two sections of the pipe are ready to use in the tent.
    I also invested $13 bucks in a stove pipe thermometer that is designed for use with single wall pipe. I think this will help In trying to regulate the burn temperature. I have a couple of pictures but I do not see how to attach them. I plan to setup the tent later today. Once agin, many thanks for the videos, they have been a big help.

      Hey George, let us know how the thermometer works. What brand is it? I don't think it does allow you to attach photos. Thanks for your feedback and I'm glad it was of some help.

      best 4 hours as hot as possible ... and dont stop until the stove doesnt smoke anywhere but out the chimney ... if you get one of those mesh bags like he did toss it and get a proper rain cap with spark arrestor ... those mesh bags dont stop anything the holes are too big and in a direct line out for any spark anyway . while the cap forces a spark to change direction and get caught more often than not in the mesh and fall back in and burn away ...
      .
      of all kodiak's name those spark shields they flog are the worst bit of kit they slapped in .. and should really supply a proper top instead of that barf bag

    I saw that you took this out to test in cold weather. How often did you have to feed this stove to keep the tent warm? …I guess also how insulated was the tent you tested? I am currently in AK and want to take my son camping and the weather here right now ranges between 30 and -10 ish.

    Would you feel under equipped with the CCS mesa stove in that Kodiak 12x12? the CCS website says the mesa is good for a 12x12 area or would you recommend stepping it up to the Spruce for the Kodiak 12x12 tent? I hunt in Northern Michigan so it can get pretty cold.

    I'm currently "curing" my stove, but I haven't gotten it burning super hot. It is all metal, so I'm not sure if I need to do this step, anyway. I mean, as in it's all steel. It isn't painted or anything. I'll still try to get it hot at least once. I've been burning small stuff in it so far. I don't really want to waste any of my good wood on a burn that doesn't heat anything. Nothing on the website or instructions says anything about curing the stove I bought before use.

    In another video where you compared the Colorado with the camp chef, you said you preferred the 10’ smoke stack on the camp chef to the 8’ on the Colorado. Have you had any experience with your tent and stove in higher winds? It just looks like that tall flimsy ducting would be the 1st thing to blow over. Thank you, I really enjoy your videos, we just purchased the Kodiak 12 x 12, can’t wait to get the kids out camping, thank you

      Great question. There are some tips and tricks you can use in high wind, but to be honest, in high wind I kill the fire just to be extra safe. Many people will take some metal wire and punch a hole into the top of the flue so they can stake it down using a guy rope without burning the rope. I've had several people recommend that to me.

    Is this the largest stove. Size recommended for this size tent....could a heat reflective tarp be used behind the stove for more warmth to radiate around the room

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott 2 роки тому +3

      I've seen others use larger ones. But for most uses, the one shown is fine. Two reasons for a larger stove are camping in temperatures well below freezing (say, below 10 F), and/or you want a fire that you can throttle down so it lasts throughout the night without getting up to feed additional logs. Instead of running a stove all night, most people find it sufficient to add a final load just before bedtime, and then restart it in the morning.

    Wow okay so there was a netting on the stove pipe to catch the embers so that they wouldn't fall on the tent!... Is it included with the tent or the stove?...This is very interesting....

  • @shadythereok

    Question?
    I've seen a blank somewhere here on the internet that will go in your house window so you can use the stoves for emergency heat.
    Can't seem to find it, seems I remember it being on a tent manufacturer with stove jacks.
    Any ideas?

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott 2 роки тому +1

      I'd bet odds that it is HIGHLY illegal to port any of the exhaust through a window and back out. An air-to-air heat exchanger would be FAR safer. You could build your own by tightly spiraling a flexible /corrugated metal air tube around the straight exhaust pipe and use a fan to force air through this pipe and into the house. (Home gas heaters are heat exchangers) You could just buy a heat exchanger. But UL approved ones are quite expensive.

    When you open the stove to put more wood in does smoke get inside the tent? How do you control so it won’t?

    • @Competitiveedgeproducts
      @Competitiveedgeproducts  2 роки тому +2

      Great question Linda. I thought for sure all my camping gear would smell like a camp fire thanks to the stove, but what happens is that as the heat rises through the pipe it simple pulls air up and out. So, when you open the stove door it simply lets more air into the stove and up the pipe. There is an exception though. If the fire is almost completely out, then you'll get a little smoke when lighting it or relighting it, but just as soon as the fire starts burning you'll see the heat siphon all the smoke up through the chimney pipe. Hope that makes sense. So, my stuff doesn't smell like smoke at all.

    • @Competitiveedgeproducts
      @Competitiveedgeproducts  Рік тому

      Good question. The stove jack is placed where it is placed to give it adequate space to accommodate the colorado cylinder spruce stove. There are safety precautions you would want to keep in mind such as not burning it too hot. There are stove thermometers that can help with that. They are about $10.

    the stove looks good. heavier the average gauge steel top plate. I hope the barrel steel is thick too. Something I noticed right away was there's no door seal. Does any heat escape out the front ?

    • @Competitiveedgeproducts
      @Competitiveedgeproducts  3 роки тому +1

      The rising heat forces the air flow through the front vents and out the tent - it pulls the air into the stove so there is no heat escape out the front. Great question and observation.

    You need several hours of a hot fire to burn in your stove. otherwise you are going to be breathing that paint burning off. Good video and I hope that helps other people not to make the same mistake. Cheers.

    Did your stove come with your tent even though you just got it and it just arrived was it part of the tent price or did you pay for it separately may I ask because I did go to the site and they’re quite expensive so I was wondering if it was already included in your tent when you bought it or were they bought it separately?

    • @Competitiveedgeproducts
      @Competitiveedgeproducts  4 роки тому +1

      Great question. Got the stove separately from coloradocylinderstoves.com/ and I got the Spruce kit. The tent is separate at: www.competitiveedgeproducts.com/6170-Kodiak-Canvas-Cabin-Stove-Lodge-Tent_p_3216.html They are definitely an investment.
