IKEA KALLAX FLIP| Extreme Ikea Kallax Transformation

  • Hey guys, so this weeks DIY I did and Ikea Kallax flip. I’ve seen Ikea flips all over the internet and thought I would try my own take on the Kallax flip. I was a little nervous for a few of these steps but I really took my time and I’m so happy with how my kallax flip went. First step I start my painting the Kallax. I was worried about taking this from white to black but I really took my time with this process. I knew with enamel paint I needed to do some priming layers. So I used black acrylic paint for the first two coats. Then I used enamel paint after that. It was my first time using enamel paint but I heard it was really durable. With painting a this Kallax I really want to make sure the paint was durable. It was a pretty long process and to have the enamel paint fully set took a while but it was worth it.
    The second step to this Kallax makeover was putting a back on the two outside shelves. I prepped both boards with paint and enamel paint. Then I cut to the right side and screwed them on to the back.
    The third step was making and attaching doors. This process I got straight from the TikTok I watched that inspired with flip. Taking two long tongue and groove wood planks. I cut them to side and screwed them together. After the doors were made I stained them and attached them to the Kallax.
    Final step to my Ikea Kallax flip was attaching some legs to bottom. I got a set of four legs off of amazon. I loved the mid century modern legs and thought they fit the clean lines of the Kallax.
    I hope you like this video and if you did give it a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel!

    Just so you know, all assembly instructions are available on Ikea’s website on the product page. But you really did save yourself a lot of time painting it assembled! A really great primer would have been sufficient for the melamine-like coating those Ikea pieces have, instead of sanding and the coat of acrylic. But the end result is fabulous! To me, adding legs to pieces like this make the biggest difference. Thanks for sharing!

    • @MaileyElaine
      @MaileyElaine  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you! Yeah you should totally do it, this was actually pretty easy in end. I didn't have any issues with the legs. You just have to make sure you don't screw them into a hallow section. There are some part of the kallax that are hallow. If you have to I recommend filling the hole with a putty or something to its more secure.

  • @chrisoznyc

    Hi. This looks amazing. Great work! I actually have the same exact legs from Amazon(and saw that you, too, needed to drill into the legs for the screws to fit!) and Kallax and am worried that the Kallax hollow bottom won't be sturdy enough to hold the legs over time. I am going to use part of it as a bar so it will hold heavy and delicate glass objects. I am planning on creating a wood frame on the bottom to attach the legs. How are these legs holding up for you more than a year later ? Would love to know!

    • @MaileyElaine
      @MaileyElaine  2 роки тому +1

      The legs are holding up great just be careful when you move it. Make sure you are picking up kallex with two people and setting it down right where you want it. What I did was pre drill hole in the kallex. There were some holes for the legs that weren't in a hollow spot which was great. Then there were a few that were in a hollow spot so I filled the hole with a wood putty. Then I let that dry before attaching the legs. That really helps reinforce the legs. Hope this helps!!! :)

Just measured the door to make sure of the measurement its 13 and a quarter wide. the tongue and groove board I got were about 7 inches wide and I cut the thin edge off of each side. that brought it down to the 13.25. To hold the tongue and groove boards together I got two pine strips that are 24 inches long by 1 1/2 wide. Cut that in half and screwed in at the top and bottom!
