I actually think that just picking up the note changes rather than the attack of the 16th note picking IS the point of picking and playing that fast. If the purpose were aggression, then they’d be playing lots of note changes and playing more technically (like death metal), but they intentionally play simple and minimalistic melodies at a fast speed so that rather than hearing the picking it comes across as a constant, oppressive wall of sound. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but I don’t think you’re alone in interpreting it that way.
Ah, this was so great album back in the 2020. The whole album is themed around having nightmares and a sleep paralysis and it has this kind of spinning, heavy, unsettling sound throughout the album
regarding your idea on how you perceive black metal's tremolo guitars - there's a spectrum of black metal listeners from those who prefer more "riffy" black metal with more discernible attacks, to those who prefer the textural approach more, and there are black metal bands all over that spectrum as well, even though tremolo picking is near ubiquitous
The singer from Akhlys also sings for NIGHTBRINGER, who have a song called “Et Nox Illumination mea in Deliciis Meis” that really encapsulates everything I love about black metal. Starry high notes on the guitars with that warbling wall of drums and bass. I have so many suggestions for music to react to but I can’t bring myself to decide on one thing to ask for. From this video, I would ask for a song like that from NIGHTBRINGER, but if I could ask for anything? It would have to be an old song called “Rustem” by Taraf De Haidouks. They’re a string-led Gypsy folk group that make some of the fastest and most complex folk music I’ve ever heard, which impressive considering that they are self-taught musicians
Self thought or just taught outside the "educational system"? There's different ways of passing on knowledge. In any case, it sounds really interesting. I'll definitely check them out. Edit: A really neat 2 min track with impressingly fast playing and cool passing of the solo baton.
Not sure if this fits with a theme. But at the end of the week that’s just happened may I suggest a review of Vilest of Beasts by The Antichrist Imperium would fit well…
*Akhlys* blew me away with their dense atmosphere. A more recent album (2024) with great atmosphere is *Black Terror Genesis* by *Sacrifial Vein* particularly the song *Throne of Perversion.*
Hopefully this stays up . . . This is my Halloween playlist that grows every year, and has Akhlys as well: *On a Hallows Eve* ua-cam.com/play/PL2DU3TBNutEcF5KBueu1WVgWl1ZIgyY_P.html ("subjects" are in sections, and more in the description) - Watchout for angry pumpkins 🎃
Whenever I hear the word "eerie" I can't help but think of pig squeals. Ree ree reeeeee but yes, this is some pretty distressing stuff right here, very high tension overall. probably haven't heard anything like this before, gonna check out the whole album fo sho Meanwhile I'd like to recommend the same thing as always, you'll like it
NIGHTBRINGER has the same singer and maybe some of the same musicians, it’s very familiar to this but of course different enough to require a different band name/lineup
This is the type of sound I wish I could appreciate more but the production always annoys me. I wish it had more punch and the guitars were well, heavy.

^This! It's 100% how you're supposed to listen to Black Metal....

I love this album, incredibly dense atmosphere!
i'm obsessed with this band now, and i'm not even that big of a black metal fan. through the abyssal door from the new album is really testing my OCD
Damn I can’t believe you’re doing this album!
This kind of metal can put me in a kind of trance. Really don't know if that's positive or negative. Yes, it's eerie and creepy.

You need to do Ingurgitating Oblivion's latest album...They perfected the extreme metal+jazz hybrid and the album is incredibly innovative.
Their latest album is definitely one of the best this year in my book. Total sonic annihilation, eerie, cold but somehow so intriquing.
and even more high fidelity production than this one
This year first listened to Akhlyss and they are the most interesting black metal for me

Ego Dominus Tuus by Nightbringer is one of the best black metal albums ever.

A Behemoth of a song
(pun intended...)
Hopefully this stays up . . .
