Quotes from famous musician and High ranking Church of Satan member and very close friend to Anton LaVey - King Diamond "Satanism is about the Powers of the Unknown. I have had hundreds of strange supernatural experiences with the occult, the other side, the beyond, whatever you want to call it that proves there is a spiritual world that can cross over into our world. Satanism is a life philosophy so within it you can have your own religion, any religion you want. Or take from various religions or your own whatever makes you happy. I have my own beliefs and Religiously Satan on a spiritual level stands for the Powers of Darkness, the Powers of the Unknown which are always all around us at all times. This is the best way to talk about these Spirits and Powers. Not a god or a devil as both of them are christian god's and that has nothing to do with Satanism. Of course there are different types of satanism. And I never wear gold as that is not healthy for you! Must need something bad and use that during ritual then you might be able to get help from these powers I believe are all around us. But that is only if they like you. I do not believe in the two christians beings god or the Devil, I believe in the Powers of the Unknown, Powers of Darkness, The Powers of the Occult what ever name you want to use. . I have done Satanic Rituals and have seen and heard spirits. Some people like to call "Them" God or the Devil or whatever, but I do not believe there is all one good and one all bad power. I believe there are many, many different Spirits and Powers that exist and that they are not good or evil, like humans they have both inside of them and I always treat them with the highest amount of respect and feel that respect returned by Them. It is massive mutual respect. Not Power, but Powers, Big difference. I believe we are one and the same me and these Unknown Forces. You really have to respect them for the incredible power they have. I believe they come to those who they feel can handle it and who will be faithful believers." In the song "Welcome Princess of Hell" you hear me singing to these spirits and powers and they sing back to me. They came to me to let me know they are here for me on my journey and that they are behind me and that they wish me good luck so I see them as my protectors almost like guardian angels. We all live several lives so that our powers/souls can grow in order to reach a higher plane and join with something greater. Our powers live in a human shell several times that will enable us to go on to a new life form a higher plane of being or join one day with a larger greater force. But 99 percent of the population live by the Satanic Philosophy whether they know it or not. As Anton LaVey even told me that Satanism is simply a life philosophy and NOT a religion. Satanism is based on logic and things that are proven which is why it could never be a religion as religion is based on things that cannot be proven. And that’s why I say that these powers of darkness are always welcome in my home. It’s as if the powers of the unknown came and said ‘Hey, we will stay with you and help you.’ That’s what I feel.” When I almost died during surgery I saw my body below as a demon tried to enter my soul and I had to fight him! These things are very real! Personally I do not use electrical lighting at home and on my Satanic Altar or in the studio when I record vocals, only black candles as electrical lighting drives away the spirits and I love having them near me. People who see Satanism from the Christian view point are not treating these powers with respect and that is very dangerous. I once actually summoned a spirit in order to prove they are real to a girl who doubted and Satan came. My wife will not look in our mirror in fear something will come out. In Satanism you are your own God. LaVey felt and I agree that we are all individuals born with different needs and views and so he felt everyone should make up their own mind about what to believe in spiritually if anything at all which is why he left a huge void in the Satanic Bible when it came to spirituality or any kind of religious beliefs and so within the Satanic Philosophy a person can still be a Christian if that fulfills their spiritual needs. Satan also means the Opposite, Inverted, Reversed which is why we wear the Satanic crosses and pentagrams. Satan means the opposite of religion. Satanism is living out your feelings and instincts without feeling it is a sin, enjoy yourself while you are here now while you can and have your own individual beliefs. One thing I consider almost mandatory though is believing there are powers around us. And you can use these powers to help yourself or those you care about. Or throw these powers at people in a negative way. I am not religious at all but you can say I am spiritual due to my experiences and beliefs. The Satanic bible is not really a bible because a bible is for religion so it should be called a book of philosophy instead. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. When people see the word ‘Satan’ they see only negative. Satan is not only bad, to me. It represents both sides of everything. I don’t believe in the Christian devil. “Christianity has both God and the devil. I believe there is neither of these two. I believe in the powers of the unknown, which I have experienced many times. I know that rituals work. I don’t do them often because you can easily misuse them. They will get back at you if you don’t respect them. Rituals can channel the forces that surround us all the time but I respect the powers and will not abuse them in any way. The Satanic Bible is 70 percent Philosophy and 30 percent magic. Satan is the power of the universe. Satan to me is the Powers of Darkness, not a man with horns. Some people think Satanism is what the Christian church portrays it to be. If you are as bad and as evil as you can be and you think that’s Satanism then you have become part of the Christian religion. That is Christian Satanism which is not what I am about at all. I know these powers are good because they saved my life many times!
I got to meet with Gojira last autumn and chatted about this, actually. They all mentioned to me, individually, that they felt extremely fortunate to do what they loved for a living. In the clip here, I don't think that Duplantier (Joe) was saying that the lives of the band members were brutal, I think he was talking about the totality of the human experience, across the species, which would stick pretty firmly with his general lyrical themes. They weren't moody, maudlin, or angst-riddled at all. They were all very friendly, bright, and engaging guys.
"There are many many more shades and colors to darkness than just black." What a profound statement by Martin Eric Ain of HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST; that phrase, cleaned up a little, would make a fine lyric!
In the darkness, we see more than black That could be either the most metal, or the most melancholic lyric depending on how you interpret it. I like those kind of lyrics, the ones that make you think and allow you to interpret however you’d like rather than just like death metal lyrics about murder or whatever.
Absolutely. Ive always preached there is more than one way to emote 'extreme' music...not just speed and downtuning distortion. Although I love and create music under the "grindcore" umbrella, trick is to do something in the vein, but different. Like horn parts against a 295 bpm beat, for example. Its limitless...and fun to experiment.
I've been cracking up with all of the extra subtitles 🤣 If you watched or are watching without subtitles on, you are really missing out... go turn them on and start over
I am an orthopaedic surgeon and still listen death metal songs during surgery (well one or two because the nurses and other surgeons complains about the noise??) thats make happier at the moments of more stress.....
For those metalheads that speak spanish (either as your mother language, or if you learnt it later) there's an amazing book by a spanish guy named Salva Rubio, and the book's title is "Metal Extremo: 30 Años de Oscuridad (1981-2011)". Translated roughly it's name could be "Extreme Metal: 30 Years of Obscurity (1981-2011)". If you have read Keith Kahn Harris' "EXTREME METAL: MUSIC AND CULTURE ON THE EDGE", Rubio's book is a bit similar, only without the complex sociological lexicon and background theory. Both books are amazing reads. However I do think that Rubio's book makes it easier to grasp and truly understand to those who aren't sociologists, or philosophers, or anthropologists (or social scientists in general) just what in the hell extreme metal is. Like I said, the book is in spanish, but it's an amazing read. So if you can, or want to, check it out.
When I was a child my mother introduced me to extreme metal. I was only six years old when she told my about Mayem and their story. I still get nostalgic thinking of my mother dusting at home while blasting "A skull full of maggots" by Cannibal corpse.
I don't particularly enjoy grindcore, but I understand where the artists are coming from and how they've influenced metal and I have come to respect it.
I am not a black metal fan neither, but I don't hate it I just respect it because it was one of those genres that saved metal music from going down to being nothing.
Erick Mazur A metal (from Greek μέταλλον métallon, "mine, quarry, metal"[1][2]) is a material (an element, compound, or alloy) that is typically hard when in solid state, opaque, shiny, and has good electrical and thermal conductivity. Metals are generally malleable-that is, they can be hammered or pressed permanently out of shape without breaking or cracking-as well as fusible (able to be fused or melted) and ductile (able to be drawn out into a thin wire).[3] About 91 of the 118 elements in the periodic table are metals; the others are nonmetals or metalloids. Some elements appear in both metallic and non-metallic forms. No, they're not.
To be fair to the guy, I'm sure his comment had more context to it before being edited. It still amuses me though after seeing them get gobstopper'ed off stage in 10 minutes at Bloodstock
for my high school essay I wrote the differences between metal genres. most of my research was done by watching this series and metal: a headbangers journey lol
This series was created to give a general idea of what Metal and its subgenres are and where they come from. It wasn't done for people who already enjoy Metal but for a broader audience. Obviously, it'll only scratch the surface. You can't expect Sam to cover in depth Norwegian Black Metal, English Death and Grind, American Death Metal, Swedish Death Metal and everything in between in 50 minutes. Come on people!
+CarlHH777 Totally agree. As much as I was hoping for a mention of Atheist and maybe some other technical death metal, I realise that it's maybe too niche to discuss. Also, it was touched on in the progressive metal episode, so there you go.
Exactly he went for the basic stuff, come on peeps. Give him a break, Sam did a great job! Love the series bro! Too bad they’re no longer on tv....MTV and VH1 are no longer music channels, they’re polluted with garbage unfortunately.
Lol. Like some everyday non metal head is going to watch this. This is definitely made for the metal community. He just can’t cover every band on earth.
Why not? He could just do htat easily as he already did " Ohh, is crap, Marilyn Manson is Extreme Metal and if you say it isn't you are a genre nazi" FTFY
If someone isn't familliar with the stories of Mayhem or the Dawn of the Black Hearts album cover, they could easly mistaken the cover for just some gory visual effects. Once you know the stories is when it gets more shocking and gruesome
gramm cool doesn't matter if you don't think it matters. "Cool" is one of those abstract concepts that's there to make people feel as if they must fit into a certain image or style in order to be what they want. In reality, it's a high school level of ignorance and fear mongering that most mature and intelligent people should be able to move past in order to be who they want, and the same goes for metal bands. Just because you're trying to be "cool" doesn't mean your music is worth anything. Asking alexandria tries to be cool, but I don't like their music. Gojira (I'm pretty sure) doesn't care about that but their music is awesome. Dont try to be cool, just be yourself and make awesome music.
Carcass started out as a punk band after they started grindcore and goregrind band, however with Mike Amott they took another path to death metal for the third album and for the fourth and other works they came with melodic death metal, actually the Pioneer in this subgenre was heartwork
MrThrashmetal13 hell yeah, man. Caladan Brood needs to release some new shit i've listened to echoes of battle a ridiculous number of times over the past year
+vig Yep probably the best quote from this episode. Notice how he mentions gothic bands while some metalheads trash talk them despite a classic band like Celtic Frost citing them as an influence.
I have such tremendous respect for Sam Dunn and the Metal Evolution series. Firstly it helps explain the music I love to those who do not understand. Those who hear noise where I hear musicianship. Secondly for the access he had gained over the years, the interviews he has conducted with some of the greatest stars in each genre. So, Mr. Dunn, I tip my hat for thee.
I will always be grateful to heavy Metal for not only being great music. But also for getting me into Satanism many years ago which also changed my life in a great way!
What is it with metal documentaries and interviews that just speak in such vague generalities that sound cool and expansive but really say absolutely nothing. "Takes the musical elements of traditional metal and pushes them to the extreme" "They just took it to a whole other level" "The blast beat is a whole new level of speed" Like, holy shit, be a bit more specific.
Taking the elements of traditional metal and pushing it to the extreme is somehow confusing to you? It makes perfect sense. It's like when Chong said he put a Black Sabbath album on 78 rpm and saw God.
I don't understand how difficult it is to understand and relate basic precepts about a culture that has been around for a long time and therefore those who taste it are supposed to have a right opinion and I mean this ... a biographical work that educates you with manzanitas what is already understood ... more specific than that would be a sarcastic apology to ignorance pretending to be cult with a criticism out of logic like this ... more sense to the questioning bro
I love how he got Joe to be on here knowing how much he loved Gojira. Crazy to think a few years later Gojira would be as big as they are! This was a fun watch
+Thatmusictool Not just he's aware of it, they created that gothic cheesy image on purpose. They are true metalheads though, calling them fake is stupid. It's fake when you pretend someone you are not. CoF was never pretending to be trve kvlt black metal band. Now, talking about fake, I wonder how Gorgoroth/Gaahl trve fans are feeling now ;)
Bolt Thrower belongs to the good old Death Metal table, not grindcore. Sadly the band is not active anymore since the band's drummer who passed away earlier this year I think.
I've watched this I don't know how many times over the last 7 or 8 years and it took me until tonight to realize what a fucking work of art the subtitles to this video are. The "translations" are just perfect. Whoever did this, know that you have made the day of a total stranger. 🤣
I got to meet and hang out on the tour bus with Chuck Schuldiner after a show in Atlanta in 1996....I remember him and Gene and Bobby all being just down to earth, super cool guys.
I remember seeing an early episode of this series on tv and going wow, this is brilliant, is this a weekly show ? Sure enough, every weekend there was another episode and another till the end of the series. When I checked at my local music store to see if this series was available on DVD and found it, I jumped on it immediately. I probably watched the whole thing at least 50 times over the years, if not more. Sam Dunn is awesome and all his docs are amazing. Banger Films rule !

The thing that keeps extreme metal fresh is that it has no boundaries, and how you keep it interesting is by introducing something no one has ever heard before.

I love these kind of documentaries. Sam does such a good job. His research is complemented by the fact he's a metalhead himself, that makes a very good watch and listen.
Oh ya, Sam is very well-informed and knowledgeable of the metal scene. He asks all the right questions, very respectful dude. And funny. I remember him needling Steve Harris about Maiden's first album and the album cover, something about it being kinda punkish, knowing full well that Harris hates punk lol
15:53 The blast beat,in metal, was _not_ brought in by Napalm Death. It was brought in by Eric Brecht, the former drummer of D.R.I. when he played on Death's demo "Back From the Dead" back in October of 1985. Eric could only play the slower "Slayer" tempo, and the faster, blast beats that he played with D.R.I.. Death accidentally invented grindcore, and to this day, barely anyone notices it. Yes, Genocide/Repulsion adopted it later, but that's because Scot Carlson was _in_ Death, briefly.
Superb. You did a lot on 51 minutes. I watched your series on the Australian government's television station ABC. I enjoyed the episodes, but was hanging out for this episode, which of course never aired. Thanks for the upload on UA-cam. \m/
I feel like Behemoth should have been part of this. They carried the torch of extreme metal through the 2000's and the 2010's. Not to mention how they perfectly blended both black and death metal into their music. Other than that being a death metal fan since the early 90's I really enjoyed this!
Love everything you guys do, Sam you are good, likeable presenter with a clear love of metal, keep doing your thing. I just wish this one could of been longer, this is my fav sub-genre of metal, lifelong extreme metaller.
Should have another episode for this series that covers Swedish Death Metal, Polish Death Metal, German Death Metal and other bands that are innovative and driving the scene today.
I love the old Hellhammer! Just that raw grainy and noisy aspect is part of the fun. Also I grew up listening to raw demo tapes of underground and local bands.
I just want to say thank you for helping me discover Enslaved. I first heard them when i watched this episode about 4 years ago and since then they've been one of my favourite metal bands.

+xX_dragonzanddungeonzmaster69_Xx Yeah so many rich western musicians have committed suicide or overdosed because their lives were so awesome...
I say anything truer all the time!

That could be either the most metal, or the most melancholic lyric depending on how you interpret it.

The Metal Evolution series is full-on killer!
Also, it was touched on in the progressive metal episode, so there you go.

gramm cool doesn't matter if you don't think it matters.

Indeed. What a true masterpiece this series was.
I will always be grateful to heavy Metal for not only being great music. But also for getting me into Satanism many years ago which also changed my life in a great way!

What is it with metal documentaries and interviews that just speak in such vague generalities that sound cool and expansive but really say absolutely nothing.
"Takes the musical elements of traditional metal and pushes them to the extreme"
"They just took it to a whole other level"
"The blast beat is a whole new level of speed"
Like, holy shit, be a bit more specific.
IKR! That shit is seriously verging on Spinal Tap-esque levels of clichè...
Man, your comment really took what I was thinking and pushed it to another dimension entirely.
Yeah, it assumes you know a bunch of stuff already
44:07 " En realidad no importa ser extremo, no importa cuan rápido seas o cuan duro te muestres, se trata de qué tan lejos estás dispuesto a ir para poner tus emociones en la música, eso es lo que la hace extrema "

I just wish this one could of been longer, this is my fav sub-genre of metal, lifelong extreme metaller.
The closed captions on this are an artwork for themselves! Thank you!
Should have another episode for this series that covers Swedish Death Metal, Polish Death Metal, German Death Metal and other bands that are innovative and driving the scene today.
They need more money to do so
Greek Metal too.
Skeptic Nerve Finnish Death metal aswell
Driving the scene Today? One word : BABYf*ckingMETAL.
I love the old Hellhammer! Just that raw grainy and noisy aspect is part of the fun. Also I grew up listening to raw demo tapes of underground and local bands.
RIP Chuck \m/
This is the episode that introduced me to Celtic Frost.
And I'm so thankful for that!
I just want to say thank you for helping me discover Enslaved.
I first heard them when i watched this episode about 4 years ago and since then they've been one of my favourite metal bands.
Awesome episode but why did they skip Doom Metal?!?!?!?!
Thrash had it's own dedicated episode.
Isaiah Johnson Then there is gothic metal, post metal, avantgarde-metal:)
***** Don't forget boy-band metal
***** You mean involution.
Isaiah Johnson Not enough time to contain the sheer heaviness, I guess. You know doom- the open riff lasts 40 minutes ;)
That was really great. I asked my friend to help me understand some of the distincions and subgenres in metal; he sent me here. Great work.
Whoever did the closed captions deserves a beer, they are hilarious
CELTIC FROST should sue Seinfeld for ripping off the PUFFY SHIRT.
"I don't wanna be a pirate "
I’m 46 and I love extreme metal!!
Im 43 me too.
This one and "A Headbanger's Journey" are two important documentaries in metal history! What an amazing job you did Sam!!!
