Overkill, great song. Great choice. Should have put in "In A Big Country" by Big Country. Also "Don't Change" by INXS which is easily my favorite song of theirs even over "Never Tear Us Apart".
@@valhalla7408 thanks for the tip. Great song, not quite as catchy for me as In A Big Country, but I liked it a lot and I don't ever remember hearing it.
They make sense if you think about them a bit longer. Simon who wrote them studied a drama school, he know how to write to not make lyrics cheap and too obvious.
Simon Le Bon's lyrics do more to serve the mood of Duran Duran's songs rather than follow some type of narrative. It's one of the things I always liked about his words and phrasing.
I'm with you on 'New Moon on Monday!' At the time, I was big into David Bowie and the beginning of this tune always reminded me of David's approach - a bartione-esque beginning giving way to full-on tenor sonor. My favorite vocal track on 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger' next to 'Tiger Tiger' the album's instrumental track.
Thank you for mentioning Laura Branigan. As I might’ve told you Professor she is one of my favorite artists ever. She actually deserves an entire episode. Another great song she did is the lucky one that only got to number 20 but is one of the best song she ever did
"New Moon on Monday" should always be on a Duran Duran mix. One of my faves. The Dance Mix is smooooth. We would have been such good friends in high school Adam
Self Control is a perfect blend of synth-pop & Euro-disco...which was so prominent in the 80s...takes me back to those care-free & less complicated times.
The whole Bruce Hornsby album is amazing - I remember Huey Lewis wore a Bruce Hornsby shirt in concert to promote him. "Mandolin Rain" is the song I will stop everything and listen to when it comes on. The Hornsby song that is always overlooked is "Lost Soul" - hunt down the duet he did of it with Shaun Colvin on UA-cam.
Thayne Peterson Mandolin Rain is a classic, although for underrated I’d go with Road Not Taken from the 2nd album. A sublime song with a great story and great piano solo.
That’s awesome. I still remember listening to a radio interview that Huey did in 1988 about his album “Small World”. Fans were calling in asking the usual questions & then later some guy with a strange voice started asking Huey some crazy questions. It went on for a couple minutes & I could tell Huey was thinking “Who the hell is this guy?” Turned out it was Bruce playing a prank on Huey. They all started laughing their butts off and then kept talking for awhile after that. Btw, Huey sang b/g & played harmonica on “Down the Road Tonight” & then later on “Defenders of the Flag” on his 2nd album. Bruce returned the favor by loaning Huey “Jacobs Ladder” & also playing accordian on “Old Antones”.
I remember all of those songs and videos from my childhood. Never forgot them while many others did. “New Moon on Monday” was and still is my favorite Duran Duran song. I appreciate Bruce Hornsby; he and his brother wrote “Jacob’s Ladder,” my Huey Lewis & the News fave. I love this channel so much! The content totally gets me on a soul level. Thank you for what you do, Professor!
Overkill is an amazing song. My buddy, Matt, and I argue about Duran’s best tune. He says New Moon wins. He’s a drummer and gets my appreciation. I love The Reflex!
New Moon On Monday was always on my mixed tapes/cds back in the day. I loved it because it wasn't beaten to death on the radio like Reflex or Hungry Like the Wolf were. Great vocals with awesome pre chorus and chorus. John Taylor is such an awesome bass player but for whatever reason doesn't get the credit he deserves. Planet Earth, Rio and Something I Should Know all have bass lines that are so integral to it being as good of a song as it is. Seen him in interviews and seems like a great guy with good sense of humor. We could always use more guys like that!
Honestly, I don’t know why your channel doesn’t have a million+ subscribers! Top notch production, interviews, information and music! I tell all of my friends to watch and subscribe! Keep them coming Adam!
Thank you for honoring Laura Branigan. She was an amazing interpreter of lyrics, and she worked her behind off in her live shows. Self Control was a huge hit, and I agree, it should make a comeback! Props man...as always, you nailed it!
"What about me?" By moving pictures via Australia; should be on everyone's playlist. "Turn back the clock" by Johnny hates jazz as well. Johnny hates jazz is the group that sang "Shattered dreams", which should already be on everybody's playlist.
I swear, Bruce Hornsby is one of the most criminally underrated musicians ever. His catalogue is so diverse, each album sounding so different from the previous one yet still like Bruce. One of the finest musicians and songwriters of all time! Thanks for bringing this awesome song to light!
Duran Duran is all about John Taylor. Check out the DD channel he’s the nicest guy ever and goes over the songs. I couldn’t believe when he said he’d been playing bass less than one or two years when writing many of those grooves.
bcastromusic - I had no idea he'd not been playing bass very long. I've always loved his style, with the driving fast pass, and that popping sound he creates*. Love that, but don't hear many people doing it, strangely *(Sorry, I'm not a musician - don't know the terminology.)
@@hughmoore3251 you used the correct term. It is a 'pop' and the other technique that usually went along with it would be a 'slap' with the side of the thumb. It created a more percussive sound and was definitely very different sounding than someone playing with either a pick (like John used on Planet Earth) or fingers. The technique I think became a bit passe a long time ago for most pop music but when it was used in classic songs that have it, it fits well. I'll add a clip from 2 of the greatest musicians of all time. Steve Gadd on drums and Will Lee (David Letterman show bass player) doing a little groove thing together from an Instructional Drum video of Steve Gadd ua-cam.com/video/pr-PerIbEpY/v-deo.html
@@babayaga1767 Yeah, it's always so great when you hear someone approach it totally different. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't but when it does it's a game changer.
New Moon on Monday is my favorite Duran Duran song and definitely one in their superb catalog that deserves more recognition. Simon Le Bon really displays his vocal chops throughout the song. From a low suave Bryan Ferryesque groove in the first half of all the verses, he turns it up in the second half of the verse, and really lets it rip on the chorus. John Taylor is a beast and maybe the under recognized bass player ever. His low end propels so many of their best songs. Great video!
New Moon was always my fav Duran Duran song. The bass playing and groove in the verses is just phenomenal. Great vid. How about covering Peter Schilling’s Major Tom, Honeymoon Suite’s New Girl Now, and U2 With or Without you?
"The One You Love" by Glenn Frey! That should definitely be one of the songs you feature. Amazing mellow vocal, great subject, and unforgettable saxophone!!! As far as this episode is concerned, you picked some more GEMS!!! I especially love the Force MD's & Laura Branigan songs. Hasn't "Self Control" ever been featured in a movie? I mean, just listening to the song, it has "MOVIE THEME" written all over it!!!
Jam and Lewis are BEASTS, and everything they’ve ever touched has turned to gold. Thanks for including Tender Love! So underrated. ‘Love is a House’, btw. The other songs in this list are also faves- goes without saying, but the Force MDs rarely get the love they deserve for their contributions.
I'd love to see a vid on Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Janet Jackson. She is still one of my all-time favorite acts. That string of albums from Control through Velvet Rope is just insanely awesome.
It is shocking to me to think any of these songs were EVER "forgotten" lol. Overkill was great, but Everything I Need was single by Men At Work that was WAY overlooked to me. Self Control is totally Branigan's greatest piece to me. I thinking the backing vocals of "You take myself, you take my self control" supporting Laura's amazing voice is what makes that songs amazing. Every Little Kiss, awesome! Tender Love is another amazing tracks. The strings that come in after the double "ahhh" harmony towards the end of the song is magical.
Again, another great job on your Hidden Gems choices. “Tender Love” is such a classic slow jam. It was John Taylor’s bass playing that attracted me to Duran Duran. As for other hidden gems, a couple came to mind. “State Farm” by Yaz is outstanding and all but forgotten. Another song that everyone should know is “Never Say Never” by Romeo Void. Both of these songs have classic 80’s vibe. You could also say any song by Thomas Dolby that isn’t “She Blinded Me With Science.” I cant even listen to that song anymore. However, “One Of Our Submarines” or “The Flat Earth;” put them on repeat.
Love seeing Bruce on your channel! I would also love to see the rest of that interview! If I was gonna pick another underrated Bruce song from the 80s, it'd probably be anything from his second album "Scenes from the Southside" (don't know why it wasn't more popular) more specifically "The Show Goes On" or his version of "Jacob's Ladder"... it's way better than Huey Lewis's version. If I was gonna pick something from "The Way It Is" it'd be "The Red Plains". But I could talk about Bruce all day!
I love how Colin Hay retains his Scottish accent 53 years after moving to Australia. Poor Laura Branigan died way too young. She really seemed to inhabit her music, especially "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" after the death of her father.
**New Moon on Monday** but not forgotten... John Taylor has long been my favorite bass player along with- co-favorite bassist, Mr. Nathan Watt. *John Taylor presents an extroninarilly new approach to the bass soundwave potential, in their genre, at the time. You can feel the slow movement of bass in the Blues and become satisfied, fantastically. Equally, you can feel joyously electric movement with that of John Taylor's bass playing and feel as though you have to dance. I love all of your episodes DR.
"Overkill" was the first single off "Cargo". I remember it getting released before the album came out in April of 83 if I remember right. I was in 7th grade, so dont hold me to the exact day. 😁 My favorite deep cut from MaW is "Down by the Sea". On a different note, another song for these lists should be Thomas Dolby's "Hyperactive". "The One Thing" by INXS too
Overkill and New Moon On Monday are those kind of songs that make sing to the top of my lungs. Overkill is rarely played here in my city (I'm from Mexico), but I haven't heard NMOM on the radio, I meet this song when I bought a DVD collection of Duran Duran. Regards from Mexico to all the "music junkies" community 👍🎧🎵🎼👌🎶
My favorite “Men At Work” song is actually not a hit or a single. “Touching The Untouchables”. It’s from their first album. KILLER track. A couple killer deep cuts on their second album are “No Sign of Yesterday” and “No Restrictions”. Both of those first two albums are full of hidden gems. “Still Life” from their third album is another. Do a deep dive on them, you won’t be sorry.
There are so many good ones. People who only listen to the hits are really missing out. Colin Hay’s solo albums are also really solid. Really good songwriter.
The video for Laura Branigan's "Self Control" was directed by William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist), one of the first by an academy award winner. It brought legitimacy to videos in general as an art form.
“Overkill” was the first US single from Cargo. In Australia “Dr. Heckyl and Mr. Jive” was the first single I believe. Another forgotten song from the 80’s in my opinion was “I Send A Message” from INXS’ classic album “The Swing”.
Professor I want to shake your hand and pat you on the back for including Overkill in this! And wow Self Control is 100 times better than I remember it! And New Moon on Monday ... my word, Duran Duran always had the best chorus hooks!
"New Moon on Monday" was one of my obsessions when I was a teen in the 80s. I loved the video (still do). "Save a Prayer" is another great one I don't hear much about.
Great to see you mention “Every Little Kiss”. That was the hit that made me want to buy his debut back in 1986. The live version, from that tour, is even more amazing. And I didn’t even realize until now that you interviewed Hornsby. Why am I always the last to find out about these things?
Loved Laura Branigan, and this song, even though I don't usually like covers. She just did it so well. I even distinctly remember the music video. Shame she died so early. Jimmy Jam never gonna change that look...classic, love it. He and Terry Lewis are musical geniuses. All these songs were great. I know you've already done a video on it, but I've Been In Love Before by Cutting Crew deserves another mention. Such a good song and usually forgotten even though it was a hit.
Shedding some light on these sadly forgotten songs, always fun to see what you think deserves more love. Now that my mom’s favorite radio station changed ownership or whatever, we’ve been listening to the 80s station in the car, and it’s often the same cheesy stuff. I agree that it would be great if they branched out and played some of the lost tunes Of course I have to put my own music out there, so here’s my personal forgotten/underrated collection: Every Beat of the Heart-The Railway Children (jangle pop that’s just so beautiful) The Working Hour-Tears For Fears (there’s so much going on and that sax...oh wow that sax...) Literally the entirety of Talk Talk’s discography Rage Hard-Frankie Goes To Hollywood (feel-good anthem with so much power and, erm, rage) On a different note, the music video for New Moon on Monday is one of my favorite DD music videos. I don’t care if the band hates it, I’ll always crack up at that last dance scene Edit: I realize just how much I share and how little anyone cares, but I feel welcomed here, ya know?
Hue & Cry - Labour of Love, The Christians - Hooverville, The Housemartins - Happy Hour, It Bites - Calling all the heroes, Fell off a Mountain - Big Bam Boo and XTC - Discography.
INXS- “I’m Over You”. An overlooked B-side that is one of their best songs ...and not sung by Michael H U2- “A Celebration”. An early track you never hear with a killer guitar riff B52’s -“Party Out of Bounds”. This one doesn’t get the love of “Rock Lobster” or “Private Idaho” but is just as fun Split Enz- “History Never Repeats”. We all know “I Got You” , but I think this song is even better.. Robert Palmer -“ I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On”... written by hit machine Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis this was originally recorded by Cherelle. Only the James Bond of Rock had the cojones to make a male version and it’s so great.
You're right on about "Overkill". There's a depth about the lyrics, that you rarely heard back then on radio. The melody is amazing, the delivery and arrangements are out of this world. It's probably their most timeless song. And thanks for reminding the world of Laura Branigan - gone too soon, and never quite got the recognition she deserved.
A bit of trivia I learned about Tender Love recently. An executive from Tommy Boy Records said that it was originally written for New Edition. But, because New Edition had contractual issues with Maurice Starr it went to Force MDs. They did awesome! I'm glad they got the chance to work with Jam and Lewis. Although, it would be great to hear New Edition to have done it. They still can 😉

@A B - Back on Track was one of my favorite songs to wake up to and rush off to school in the morning. The video was played quite a bit on MTV in the morning too. It always put me in good mood too. ☺️
I saw a clip of Laura Branigan taking voice lessons and she had incredible versatility with her voice. It was very similar to Edith Pilaf who was one of the greatest voices of the 20th century. Her voice in "The Power of Love" is better and has more power than Celine Dione but was not a great version. "Forever Young" was better sung by her than Alphaville as well. It was kind of a shame because Laura Branigan needed to be surrounded with better producers. Her albums had a lot of songs that just weren't that good. It was a waste of her incredible voice.
Hey Professor, did you ever get into the Living in Oblivion collection of CDs that released in ‘94 or so? Such a great assortment of 80s hits and forgotten gems. Even some more obscure stuff too. It was interesting when it was released because it was really well before everyone was all into the 80s nostalgia.

@@valhalla7408 thanks for the tip. Great song, not quite as catchy for me as In A Big Country, but I liked it a lot and I don't ever remember hearing it.
Karl V My pleasure ... from one music lover to another - be well and stay safe 🙏🏻😘
@@valhalla7408 thanks!
I agree. In A Big Country. Beautiful song.
Most of Duran Duran's lyrics don't make sense. But they always sound great.
That's because Duran Duran writes in metaphors.
@@ddm62571 yeah
I love Duran Duran🎶🎶
René Peraza Exactly! Le Bon loves Bowie.
When I first heard it on the radio I thought it WAS Bowie!!! Great minds, am I right?
My favs were Union of the Snake, New Moon & the Reflex.
I love 'Self Control', the line "I walk among the creatures of the night" always gets me. Great recommendations!!! Thanx, Professor, lesson learned!!!
Thank you for mentioning Laura Branigan. As I might’ve told you Professor she is one of my favorite artists ever. She actually deserves an entire episode. Another great song she did is the lucky one that only got to number 20 but is one of the best song she ever did
The lucky one really is a great song. I also love shattered glass.
@@whiskersandshyla9944 Powerful songs...she deserves her own segment here!
"New Moon on Monday" should always be on a Duran Duran mix. One of my faves. The Dance Mix is smooooth.
We would have been such good friends in high school Adam
Self Control is a perfect blend of synth-pop & Euro-disco...which was so prominent in the 80s...takes me back to those care-free & less complicated times.
man Tender Love comes on and all I can hear in my head is "the next skate will be couples and backwards skating only" .. good times :)
Lol ask that girl to skate with u and hold her hand. Good innocent times.
Cool Cat yep true and Huey also covered Jacobs ladder and made it a #1 hit out of it before Brice recorded it of his own song.
Check out the minor key rerecording of Mandolin Rain that Bruce did with Ricky Skaggs a few years ago. It's unreal.
Huey still pushes him. He mentioned Bruce in his appearance on The Blacklist.
Excellent film Director William Friedken Directed the video for " Self Control " Great song.
Great list ....I’m always campaigning for two of MY favorites
1) Welcome to the Boomtown - David and David
2) To live and die in L.A. - Wang Chung
Ms Christina drives a 944...
"Self Control" is my favorite of this batch!! RIP Laura.
Suggestions: "Perfect Way" by Scritti Politti, "Janitor" by Suburban Lawns, "Heaven or Las Vegas" by Cocteau Twins.
"pearly dew drops" should have been a bigger hit for them.
Janitor is great!
I am never disappointed when your channel has a new release. Always is thoroughly done, insightful, and enjoyable. Thank you Professor!
5 ain’t ever enough 😎
New Moon on Monday is absolutely epic. I fell in love with that song when it first came out and it cuts me to my soul even today.
"What about me?" By moving pictures via Australia; should be on everyone's playlist. "Turn back the clock" by Johnny hates jazz as well. Johnny hates jazz is the group that sang "Shattered dreams", which should already be on everybody's playlist.
I love that song, too. I always thought they were Canadian. Thanks for informing me that they are in fact Australian.
Love that, but don't hear many people doing it, strangely
*(Sorry, I'm not a musician - don't know the terminology.)
As a bass player of 45 years, sometimes it's better when you dont quite know what you're doing. You dont have any rules in your way
@@babayaga1767 Yeah, it's always so great when you hear someone approach it totally different. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't but when it does it's a game changer.
Well, JT was certainly a fifth of it. His bass lines on Rio and Girls On Film are amoung the best I've ever heard.
Great vid.
How about covering Peter Schilling’s Major Tom,
Honeymoon Suite’s New Girl Now, and U2 With or Without you?
Great songs, but With or Without you does not qualify as a forgotten song.
Well done ✅👍 professor. Loved each one. Thanks for painting the tapestry of the 80s
"The One Thing" by INXS too
I’m 49 so I also remember brotha
Hardluck story......maria......children of parade.......
It's Helpless Automaton for me.
be good, Johnny
“Still Life” was terrific. So was “Maria” & “Hard Luck Story”. All of them were from their 3rd album in 1985.
There are so many good ones. People who only listen to the hits are really missing out.
Colin Hay’s solo albums are also really solid. Really good songwriter.
New Moon on Monday is for me an abstract, mysterious, new wave gem. 83 was a really eclectic year for pop.
Just listened to "Overkill" on my new turntable yesterday!
I absolutely love SELF CONTROL
Self Control is such a lovely song, thanks for making other people listen to this masterpiece too.
Absolutely love Self Control! Such a fabulous song.
When is “Don’t Disturb This Groove” by The System going to get some love?
I totally forgot about Tender Love. Such a good song! Great melody and harmonies!
Yes Self Control is one of my all time favorite songs. Laura Brannigan had such a beautifully distinct voice RIP.
Shedding some light on these sadly forgotten songs, always fun to see what you think deserves more love. Now that my mom’s favorite radio station changed ownership or whatever, we’ve been listening to the 80s station in the car, and it’s often the same cheesy stuff. I agree that it would be great if they branched out and played some of the lost tunes
Of course I have to put my own music out there, so here’s my personal forgotten/underrated collection:
Every Beat of the Heart-The Railway Children (jangle pop that’s just so beautiful)
The Working Hour-Tears For Fears (there’s so much going on and that sax...oh wow that sax...)
Literally the entirety of Talk Talk’s discography
Rage Hard-Frankie Goes To Hollywood (feel-good anthem with so much power and, erm, rage)
On a different note, the music video for New Moon on Monday is one of my favorite DD music videos. I don’t care if the band hates it, I’ll always crack up at that last dance scene
Edit: I realize just how much I share and how little anyone cares, but I feel welcomed here, ya know?
People care! I love Duran Duran and that dance scene makes me laugh too!
Self Control is such an atmospheric song and one of my favorite tracks of the decade. It has such an eerie feeling to it.
So well researched. Love all these songs.
You tell good stories. You are a good story teller.
I couldn’t agree more. Overkill has always been my favorite song of Colin hays
Mine too
Hue & Cry - Labour of Love, The Christians - Hooverville, The Housemartins - Happy Hour, It Bites - Calling all the heroes, Fell off a Mountain - Big Bam Boo and XTC - Discography.
INXS- “I’m Over You”. An overlooked B-side that is one of their best songs ...and not sung by Michael H
U2- “A Celebration”. An early track you never hear with a killer guitar riff
B52’s -“Party Out of Bounds”. This one doesn’t get the love of “Rock Lobster” or “Private Idaho” but is just as fun
Split Enz- “History Never Repeats”.
If I listen to Laura Branigan: Self Control..Her voice and style let me think to Kim Wilde. Great songs and singers both. :)
14:09 - MIND BLOWN!!
Jimmy Jam sets a mood with his neon keyboard, his look, and his boss broadcaster delivery.
Manx Uberglider when he speaks he sounds like a mix between Barack Obama and Rush Limbaugh....which seems dangerous and is probably illegal. 😂
Most artists are impressed with the homework ( labor of love ) you put in. As we all are. Keep up the good work Sir Professor.
They still can 😉
It's like you can read my mind...I absolutely agree with this entire list!! Keep up the good work man!!
Let us not forget Men at Work's "It's a Mistake." Freakin' amazeballs!
All of these Songs were unreal ! I myself love everyone of them ! If I had to pick it would be # 1 Overkill # 2 Every little kiss # 3 Tender love #4Duran Duran # 5 Laura Branigan. Another great video PROFESSOR from the Wounderful Songs from our past that we may have forgotten! 80s 🎸🎙💥🕵️♂️
Super top 5........that song by Bruce Hornsby is my fav. Cheers from Panamá profesor.
I totally forgot how amazing “Overkill” is, so thanks for including it. Keep the lists coming of the hidden gems. Love them!!
Self control is amazing. My favorite song of hers. Got a big resurgence by being in a grand theft auto game
Its actually a cover of an Italian pop song just like her hits Gloria and Ti Amo.
Crazy by Icehouse. Add that as a hidden gem on your next 80’s hidden gems. You won’t be disappointed!! And New Moon on Monday is an amazing song, good choice. I love any guitar work Andy Taylor has done. So underrated and under used.
My 5 Forgotten Gems from 80s
1) Slave to Love - Bryan Ferry
2) Don't You Know What The Night Can Do? - Steve Winwood
3) Back on Track - Breakfast Club
4) A Perfect Way - Scritti Politi
5) Another Lover - Giant Steps
I could go all day....too many to be just 5!
@A B - Back on Track was one of my favorite songs to wake up to and rush off to school in the morning. The video was played quite a bit on MTV in the morning too. It always put me in good mood too. ☺️
Madonna had a hand with the Breakfast Club. I believe they opened for her at one time
Yessss, a perfect way!!!! Slave to love 💕
First time I heard the song Back on Track was on a Kids Incorporated episode lol
New Moon on Monday is an epic, under appreciated anthem.
It was a waste of her incredible voice.
you dont see Edith P luv very often these dayz!!!!1 :)
Would you be so kind to share a link to that clip you've mentioned in your comment? Thank you
'New Moon On Monday' was also used in the movie 'Razorback".
Overkill. So timeless. Never played enough on radio.
tender love still gets a lot of airtime in love songs centered radio stations in my country.
Self control is one of my favorite songs ever. The singing and the music are exactly what the 80's sounds like.
You should do a Top 5 overplayed 80's songs. Top of my list is Don't Stop Believin' by Journey.
I can’t listen to it anymore.
Thank you thank you thank you thank you. Upon the first couple notes, I immediately begin to cringe. Way too overplayed and overrated.
@@kittygaillot2286 somehow it's got this cult following over the past 10 years from millennials. It. barely reached the Top 10 back in the day in America and went nowhere elsewhere.

Hugh Jarse The resurgence is all because of that show Glee.
New Moon on Monday by Duran Duran! Absolutely pounding chorus and the stonking bass line. Yes, JT needs some recognition for sure. Another forgotten gem is Last Chance on the Stairway.
