  • During a recent conversation on another UA-cam channel, the notion of being a Christian nation was brought up. Simply examining the 1st Amendment reveals the inaccuracy of this claim. Continuing to promote this belief hinders our true purpose as Christians, which is to spread the message of salvation through repentance of our sins.

I definitely don't have a problem with someone practicing their religion in school. Pray if you want, but don't make the whole school do it. Don't make mandatory assemblies where you make everyone pressured to pray.
Thank you for injecting a bit of sanity.

Thank you for your thoughts; I'm absolutely horrified at the idea that somebody might expect my Christian faith to be informed by Thomas Jefferson or Ben Franklin."
Correction though: The Puritans were not Baptists (They were Congregationalists) -- Baptists were among the ones persecuted, and the ones who found freedom in Rhode Island.

I would just add that yes the phrase separation of church and state originated from the Danbury letter but it was also cited in many supreme court rulings since then reaffirming what the intention of the establishment clause of the first amendment was. But now with trump getting all those supreme court picks and with the possibility of another trump presidency we have a supreme court that is getting closer to breaking that precedent and bringing more christian nationalism into the law

"Christian nationalism is a type of religious nationalism that is affiliated with Christianity. It primarily focuses on the internal politics of society, such as legislating civil and criminal laws that reflect their view of Christianity and the role of religion/s in political and social life."
I would ask what part of that you don't believe I understand based on this video.

I don't take America being a Christian nation to mean we are a theocracy or have an official religion or that we have or should have Christian nationalism. I take it to mean that we are culturally Christian and have major Christian influence. The same way we can say Japan is a Shinto or Buddhist country even though their government is secular and the people irreligious. You yourself sate all of the influence of Christianity at its founding. John Locke was very much inspired by the bible in the writings of his books which many of the founders said were of major influence on their creation of the government.
All that being said, I agree with your sentiment of "no more Christian nationalism" 100%. I don't believe in the merging of religion and politics. We cannot legislate morality.
Correction on Jefferson: It's correct that he didn't believe in the deity of Jesus, but he also referred to himself as a Christian. His bible wasn't about removing the supernatural elements, it was about removing everything except the words of Jesus and he gave it to missionaries to give to Native Americans. Also, it does have supernatural events, it has Jesus healing the sick and performing miracles. He also wrote a second bible that was a collection of Jesus' moral teachings.

    • @PatrickRyanLewis
      @PatrickRyanLewis  17 днів тому

So you are advocating for your belief system over all others? Is that not the exact issue those who are against Christianity say Christians do?
The entire point is no one should be forcing others into their belief system, it is a choice that each and every one of us needs to make on our own. Will I speak to others about why I believe Jesus is the only way to eternal salvation? Absolutely every single chance, but I would never say "you have to believe the way I think or else I want nothing to do with you."
This is the problem so many churches have. It is not the Christians job to "get someone saved". Only God through the work of Holy Spirit and accepting Jesus as your Savior can do that. It is my purpose to help those I encounter understand the importance of making that decision. Not to brow beat anyone into submission.

I made absolutely no assertion of a belief but rather asked: why not reject Christianity / all religion?
The near impossibility of a belief being enforceable under any model is rejectable as belief is not a choice. We no more choose a belief than we choose to be hot/cold. One is either hot or is cold, one either has a belief or does not. That said, your religion is based on trying to force others to believe as the implicit option to not believe is an eternity in hell / a rejection from heaven (salvation). Non belief is the worse sin under most Christian models.
In your own words in “accepting Jesus as your saviour…”, which is to say “believe in Christianity”. The “importance” is the threat of the antecedent non belief and the entailing punishment. You are advocating for a coerced and ergo non belief, in other words, you are pushing your religion on to others by emotional force. This makes you no better than the Christian Nationalists.
Keep in mind that this is not personal but rather an attack on ideas and horribly flawed ones at that.

I'm American and was talking about the God bless America set. I could certainly understand that perspective that for the Jews of the Bible. But it has nothing to do with my country. Even so, God was continuously disappointed with them and allowed them to be conquered by a series of power empires. First the Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom and 10 of the 12 tribes were lost and remain lost to this day. Then Babylon conquered the southern kingdom and they remained in captivity until Cyrus the Great restored them to their home and let them serve as a vessel in the Persian Empire. After Alexander conquered the Persians they suffered religious persecution under the Greek Seleucid Empire. Then the Romans conquered the Seleucids and set up Herod as a puppet king. If God was a nationalist he wouldn't have done any of that. The message is a bit more complicated than that. God hates oppression and injustice no matter who is benefiting of suffering from it. God wants us to love everyone, even our worst enemy. Nationalism is opposed to that.
Look at the story of Jonah. God tells him to go preach to the city of Nineveh, the capital city of the Assyrian Empire that had just destroyed Israel and nearly sacked Jerusalem. Jonah couldn't understand that. The Jews hated Nineveh and they had a just reason to, but God didn't. He understood they simply didn't know their left hand from their right gand and had mercy on them.
Nationalism divides us from one another. God wants us to love each other, even the people who the world teaches you to hate.

Render unto God what is God's and unto Caesar what is Caesar's. No one is forcing their religious beliefs on anyone. No one advocates for mandatory prayer. The facts are quite the opposite. Recently in California a homosexual student club was allowed use of school facilities while a Christian student group was denied that right and that sort of discrimination against religion happens across this country everyday. Yes, this country is a Christian country only in the sense that the foundations of it rest on our Judeo-Christian laws and traditions. Guess what? They work very well and thus we have prosperity beyond anything mankind has ever seen. Meanwhile purely secular societies such as North Korea are hell holes. All the Muslim countries from Morocco to Indonesia combined have GDP less than several individual American states and that includes Saudi Arabia. Per capita income, literacy, life expectancy, infant mortality; all are lower in these nations than our Christian nation. Then there's the hell on this earth of India, a Hindu society. I wish every American could spend 45 minutes in this place. You would run screaming to the nearest Hilton, I can assure you. If you're a woman and alone, you won't make it there. So, yes we can be Christians and love America at the same time. All are welcome to our open door but none are ever forced to open it. God bless you all.
