You make a very astute comment that many do not, namely, that the immaterial "mind" is a verbal: a verb standing in as a noun. As for Freud "invent[ing] the ruler" for normalcy, I would agree with you to a point. Current culture and medicine, notably in America, has engendered a psychiatric enterprise that is strongly informed by the reductive and biologistic.
Really great, i wish this insight was more common among psychotherapists. In today's society they are seen as the sages and priests were seen in past societies, and they rarely live up to that responsibility (imo).
The pharmaceutical industry informs the science, as does the healthcare consumer. It does alter one's perspective on the "manufacture" of mental illness.
It is based on the ostensibly "objective" criteria. Empiricism is also applied when the therapeutic agent is introduced into a non-consenting, forced "patient". The latter is an empirical maneuver, justified by objective standards of the profession, which is self-referrential twaddle.
Prove what? That there are, at present, laws on the books of EVERY state regarding procedures for involutary commitment? This is not a matter of "proving" anything; the facts speak for themselves:Institutional psychiatry is part of state power, of disposing of many, who, for no criminality, are still coerced, for "Therapeutic" reasons.
@Astronomer7698 {i dont see much psychology behind this} Within the noble field of being of helpful service to others, John Breeding is amongst the best. His composition which enables him to be of great service, includes his knowledge from his PhD. Which is what explains why I've never heard him say anything positive about the established field of Psychology & especially Psychiatry He's good because he knows it well. Thus, he knows precisely what not to do Sound reasoning will reveal that
First off, the homeless are oftentimes subject to psychiatric "interventions". Think of the spurious term "homeless". Living in an apartment, having to live with one's parents, etc.: would these count as homeless? No, of course not. However, having a term to designate "living in the streets" has its strategic purposes. Moreover, the ACLU has consistently supported "the right to treatment" which includes coerced "therapeutic" interventions.
I understand you. I feel for you. I've "lived" it, and now that my life was spent by others, with the thinnest of their own excuses, I just wonder, with all the complicity, how to move on. I hope you have. My life was more than "disrupted" for a few decades, while I was abused into position. I wait every day for the ax laid over my head, the actual evidence of the trauma inflicted upon me to be yet again ruthlessly used to harm me, as if this loop was of MY creation.
for the most part there are very few "human beans" out there...i come across nothing but disrespect and then am expected to respect those who show me none...it brings me down to a level that i strive to escape from.
I always look at it this way, growing up should be the process of increasing choices and increasing responsibility - if responsibility increases but not choice and you're creating a slave, if choice increases but not responsibility you're creating a spoiled monster, if neither increase then you creating an eternal infant.
Although I cannot say I know exactly how you feel, I can relate. I take Adderall to help me pay attention and stay focused. Before I started taking it, my life was a mess. I couldn't stay focused on anything; even things I WANTED to. Once I started taking Adderall, I was finally able to. Just because a drug doesn't have its indented affect on everyone doesn't mean there aren't people who could benefit. I'm only against them being forced on someone who doesn't want them.
A lot of good points here... however sometimes with you children you just have to show who's in charge.. No other way. Not saying through violent or forceful means, but in a child-parent dynamic there has to be some clear distinction of authority.
I told my brother the same thing when he said his teacher told him that he has learning disability when he always has sharp come backs to come up with all the time.....systematically listening and addressing each and every point.....I mean you can tell person is not dumb when they cover their ass up 300% from every angle And then they say they are getting help for ADD from school Then he started to go ballistic on me for messing with his brains or mind
Those who are 'disrespectful' to me, I don't have to do anyhting to. They end up doing it to themselves, down the road. I just 'dissasociate' myself with them.
@Astronomer7698 Yes, there are a lot of psychologically oriented videos from Dr. Breeding. This is actually the first of his videos I'd watched that is different from that.
I was diagnosed with ADD as a young kid. All of my teachers knew that I had it. I was disrespected by my teachers on that basis as I was treated differently than other kids in school. This disrespect I experienced thanks to the ADD stigma I had with teachers fucked up my self-esteem. And it turns out that I never had ADD. Anyone who criticizes Dr breeding on mental health stigmas doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about or is misinterpreting. Try experiencing this disrespect for yourself
Diversity is good; BUT there must also be a method of UNITING, cos' we live in one world of substance, and that world is our foundation, so the world needs a ton of respect before people can manifest diversity in a legitimate and moderated fashion. Diversity is a balancing act between reality(impersonality) and personality. Reality and personality must unite for diversity to be acceptable.
John, I would ask you to respect that sometime people need help facing horror and extreme grief.. trauma. I can tell you that anti depressants helped me get to that point and did so very well. If it wasn't for them I might not be here now. Please put you axe down and see the good these medications do, because they do save lives and they do give people their lives back and bring light and perspective where they can talk. Regardless of there being a medical test or not, it works, it works well
... with my consent. Accepting PTSD helps people. This is a reactive condition. You can use an extreme to make any point.. we all get angry and lose hope.. does not equate with ptsd or severe depression in any way. That is the "just snap out of it metality" maybe therapy could deal with it alone... but it can't now. With the help of anti depressants it works so much better. The stories anti these meds will always be more prominant, that is human nature. we are annoyed we tell more people .. fact
@slowascharlie Clearly I agree, you shouldn't discipline or punish when you are angry.. this is especially true as a child matures. But I just find it odd when people are begging and pleading with their 3 year old to stop doing something when the child still has no sense of right or wrong, or what is appropriate. Not saying kids should be mindless zombies that never question authority either though.. it's a tight rope walk I guess.
thank you. these people think adhd is a label.. what do they think happens to people with "adhd behavior"... everyone respects their individuality. No they get labeled and believe they are stupid, wrong and worthless. This man makes me very angry.
You have a real chip on your shoulder, and instead of confronting your demons, you choose to communicate your negative self onto others! As for the forced treatment argument you proffer, I can say that you are absolutely wrong! Involuntary committment and so-called therapeutic interventions are still lawful in almost every state!
Brain science and modern, more advanced understanding support what all psychiatric survivors say, as well as those with basic human common sense. The lies are now being exposed, and hopefully the liars punished for the harms they know they've participated in, and benefited from, on the LIVES of others.
I say Yes you are wrong in thinking that you disrespected him. You are his parent. If my son had close the door in my face like that, I would have demand him to open it. If he didn't want to be disturbed he should have had the door closed in the first place. He was totally disrespectful to you! in my opinion. If the door was closed and you opened it with out knocking to receive an invitation to come in the you were disrespectful to him.
i only recently subscribed to this channel... but i dont see much psychology behind this... are other videos more psychologically oriented? cuz this just just kind of 'talking' about respect, i dont see any psychology behind it

Well look at this hidden gem I just found. Excellent! Thank you for saying what you said about biological psychiatry.
Really great, i wish this insight was more common among psychotherapists. In today's society they are seen as the sages and priests were seen in past societies, and they rarely live up to that responsibility (imo).
This is a fascinating video - I love Dr Breeding's work. I am also starting out in psychology and these vids are making me glad I chose to do it
Still love it

Ah.. sweet, sensative Dr Breeding... I just love the vids he does, his calming presence...
On this stuff, more insightful than Bob Ross, and catered to a brain more mature than those in the Mr. Rogers' neighborhood, not to dis Mr. Rogers.

This is a Great video, Dr. Breeding and I thank you, too.
BEAUTFULL video and infinitely important to understand!
another great one from the Doc
Thank you doctor.
I'm sorry, proffessor john breeding.

I hope you're not homeless anymore. I would have helped you when I could have.
Thanks for sharing Dr. Breeding.
Fear = Respect to many which is an illusion.
True respect is so much more
Most are not aware and responsible always blaming outside oneself.

Thank you!!

Maybe an exchange like "dad, I'm in the middle of something, can we discuss in an hour" would be more respectful than shutting the door in your face.
Those who are 'disrespectful' to me, I don't have to do anyhting to. They end up doing it to themselves, down the road. I just 'dissasociate' myself with them.

"respect" sounds like "picking disorder" within birds, "disrespect" sounds like authority.
