FYI: around 4:00, I said that the Ortho doesn't support ready to use products. This is false. It supports RTU Ortho products (e.g. Weed B Gone, etc.).
My Chameleon came with a hose gasket and doesn't leak at all.
SORRY JIMMIE::; JUST REALIZED YOU WERE CORRECTING YOURSELF... MY APOLOGIES ,MY MAN
Can I use these to wash my car?
I have the Ortho. I flow tested mine and I was getting 3 gallons per minute. More flow equals heavier application rates. I put a plastic valve on and set the flow rate to 2 GPM. I then melted the knob into the base in two places with a soldering iron so it couldn’t move. Now my application rates are spot on.
Very in depth review! Nice work jimmy 👍🏼
Great reviews, I’m sure someone has already mentioned, but the chameleon has upgraded the adapter end and added a rubber gasket, mine has zero leaks, only 2 months in but still works very good, didn’t much care for the ortho, have also owned the Chapin deluxe, solid product, but started springing leaks after the first year of use, also not able to screw on the bottles of concentrate directly to the unit like we can do with the chameleon,
Love the ortho. Haven’t had a problem yet and it’s now going into its second season with me. Love your videos, Jimmy.
Thanks, Cody.
Really helpful video! Looking forward to the upcoming videos. Especially, the Hydretain video.
Thank you. Check this one out in the meantime - ua-cam.com/video/HUKeku60FY4/v-deo.html
Just got and used the Ortho and it is amazing. I had one that looked like the green one in this video and hated it. I got the ortho from Amazon. I’m a 79 year old woman and been doing yard work most of my adult life.
Good thorough review, Jimmy!
Thank you for the video and the information! The Chameleon hasn't(for me) been very consistent in the product-to-water ratio (It varies as I'm spraying), with changes in the darkness/clarity of the mixture that I see coming out. I'll try the Ortho next.
I used that Chameleon for the season last year. Mine did not leak right away but it didn't take long to start leaking and it never stopped. I also found the Chameleon to spray more product up front and less toward the end of the bottle... I just started using the Ortho this year and like it better overall. It does not leak from the hose. Occasionally it will leak from the top of the the bottle but so did the Chameleon. The color of the spray seems more consistent throughout the entire bottle but the Ortho seems to leave more product in the bottle when it starts to spray intermittently.
I enjoy using the “flat” setting when applying products. I’m able to get a direct and consent application especially as I walk a line. 👍🏼
Every once in a while I'll dabble with the flat setting. But I do favor the shower setting.
Great information! Thank you for putting this together.
Thank you
☀️ Jimmy, great review! ☀️
I recently mixed two chemicals during one application. One product required 1oz per 1K. The other was 2oz per 1K. I was having trouble figuring out what to set the dial at. One product was supposed to go down twice as fast as the other but they were also both equally diluted by one another. Then it occurred to me that I only needed to consider the entire area being treated. So, my lawn is 7K sq ft, that means 7 oz of chemical “A” and 14oz of chemical “B” are required for the yard. Chemical B was thick so I added 7oz water to thin it out. That gave me 28oz of product to put down. If you divide 28 by the size of the job 7000 sq ft or just 7, you get an application rate of 4. I set the dial to 4oz per 1K and I completed the entire job before running out.
At 8-12$ it’s definitely worth the experience to atleast try to determine which works best..
Awesome review man..I appreciate the honesty man and how you weren’t biased 😎 🙌👍👌
Thanks, Ay.
Great comparison Jimmy. I haven't tried the Chameleon yet. When my Ortho goes belly up I'll probably try it.
Definitely worth a try.
Thanks for the review. Very good points on both.
Thanks for watching, as always, Grace!
The train 🇺🇸 nice comprehensive review here Jimbo! Never used the chameleon myself but the one reason I didnt buy it is because I didnt like the ergonomics of the handle when I picked one up and held it at lowes
Yeah I didn’t care for the handle either. But the trigger... that’s a different story.
I had an older ortho sprayer that I replaced this year because the trigger spring broke. It had a round bottle, straight straw and easier to hold trigger. I agree with your comments on the new one. Screwing the bottle on is a pain and squeezing the trigger is not comfortable for long periods. However it does spray NEXT.
I wonder why they changed up the bottle shape. Round is way better.
Jimmy Lewis You can see the old bottle 3-minutes in on my video. ua-cam.com/video/mJ7vxSL1ULQ/v-deo.html
@7:30 Use some plumbers tape on the hose end. That will stop the leak. The Chameleon is not a good design I agree, but it should work. I have the Chameleon, and it isn't leaking...yet.
I’ve had the chameleon and it has been leaking since I bought it. 😢
I don’t like products leaking on my hands.
lol, I just read my post from 4 years ago. My chameleon is now leaking at the fitting. On the water-side so no chemicals leaking out.
I gave the Chameleon a shot, like three minutes before it made its way to the trash can. I enjoy the Ortho and have two on standby. Yet I am still on the second or third season on my original Ortho.
Have you tried using
Oatey Plumber's Tape on the male part of the hose before you connect to the sprayer?
Great review! I have the chameleon and I like it, but was considering getting an Ortho. Good info to consider.
Would definitely recommend giving it a fair shot! When you do, let me know what you think!
Jimmy Lewis
Will do!
Great information Jimmy!
Thank you
Hi what is the hose pipe connection size that threads into this please? I'm in the UK and just ordered one from the US that's on its way. Our standard hose pipes here are all different sizes. I have a 3/4 thread hose and a 1/2 inch quick connector hose. I've heard two conflicting answers that this Dial n Spray is 5/8 but I've also heard its 3/4. Can you please confirm which one it is so I can get my adapter ordered online now as well because I think I'll need one? Many thanks
I have a older Ortho Dial n Spray I bought 10 years ago for 5 bucks now I see them on ebay for 30 plus dollars because they were the best end hose sprayer on the market and I wounder why they quit making them. It has a nice wide fan spray.
YES THAT LEAK ON THE COULD BE A DEAL BREAKER OR THAT HARD TRIGGER ON THE ORTHO SPRAYER. ITS MY FIRST TIME TO SPRAY NEMATODES. Any suggestions for a girl ?
Excellent concrete curbs around your landscaping! You should do a video on how you made those! Sorry about your border shrubs. Must have been the winter of 2018! Did the same to mine!
Thank you. The curbs were installed by a local landscape company. We laid out the design, and then they came in and poured it out. They use a machine called the "Lil' Bubba" I believe it is called.
Still think I’m leaning Ortho but I appreciate your unbiased comparison. 👍🏻
Thanks for watching. Glad I came off unbiased. That's what I was going for.
Got both and honestly have not used the Chameleon. More time with the ortho. Good call on the rotations with the ortho. If you're not careful you will have next products all over the place trying to lock that in.
Honestly looking for a new hose, zero G to help moving around the yard easier? Dont like lugging around the hose with the hose end sprayer. Messes with the stripes too.
BTW - How often do trains go by your house?
Hey Jimmy, i bought a Hudson dial sprayer from the US and got it imported the UK, when i connected the hose the connection was tight but water sprayed everywhere, i fixed this by applying plumbers tape toe the screw thread on the connector and this reduced the leaking water almost fully, it only drips every so slightly now
I'll have to give that a try. Thanks!
Another huge disadvantage of the dial n spray is it leaks when full and in use. I bought 2 with the same issue. When you also tighten it, it come off so you have to tighten it just right so it doesn’t come loose again. With these things said, you can easily stain your driveway especially when using dark products like N-Ext product line. Just an FYI. Not sure if everyone had the same experience, but that’s what I experienced.
Very helpful. I agree with the leak. Bummer.
How far up in a tree will it spray on the jet setting?
Nice job jimbo
Did you try wrapping your hose with teflon tape?
My Chameleon came with the rubber gasket in the hose attachment. I also liked that the plastic on the Chameleon felt of higher quality.
Yeah I’ve since bought two more and neither of them were any better unfortunately.
Good comparison. Which sprayer has the better dial adjustment?
Thanks. Dial adjustment experience is pretty similar.
I tried this chameleon bottle but the liquid doesn’t dispense only the water from the hose comes out. Also the water leaks from the hose adapter
I have both. I want to know how to dial in product.
I have both sprayers and the chameleon is by far the better of the 2. My ortho leaks and the chameleon never has-quite the opposite of the review here. In my experience the ortho clogs up when spraying thicker liquids (even with the filter off). Also the ortho never completely emptied and always leaves product at the bottom of the fill bottle, whilst the chameleon completely empties. I agree though that the ortho has a better spray pattern and projects the spray a little further.
Its hard finding a good hose end sprayer. I've tried both of those and had the same issues with both, and some clogging. I've decided that the best Hose end sprayer is reusing the Bioadvanced Fungus control bottle. Cheers
Yeah they can definitely be hit or miss.
Can’t wait for a company to come out with a LEGIT hose end sprayer.
Me too
Chapin has the best quality one I've found, but the pattern sucks. It's a flat misty thing that gets blow around very easily.
Since it’s quick connect, I wonder if you can use the metal quick connect adapters for a hose.
Maybe!
I purchased a Chameleon Hose End Sprayer to apply Fish Emulsion. The sprayer didn't pull the emulsion through. Am I doing something wrong or is the emulsion too thick for the sprayer filter? To your knowledge is there a hose sprayer that will pull emulsion?
Did you dilute it in the tank at all?
Ive found that used hydretain 32oz bottles work best. Ive saved about 6 or 7 thru the yrs. I use each one for every 1000. It goes really fast and u get a ton of water comin out , and it never clogs.
Ned Galic I’ve done the same thing. Works great
So your "meshed together" product already exists. Chapin makes fantastic hose-end sprayers. Check out the G362D or the wet and dry sprayer.
WOW, you have a very backyard view. What city/state is that? I'm tired of Illinois. My kids are asking me to move.
Thank you. Utah.
Love the mountains, where do you live?
I have an Ortho Dial n Spray, But found the Simple Lawn Solution spray bottles work the best for me. Thanks
I like those as well. They do sell empties in that style on a few sites
@@fretless67 i believe those other product hose end products are calibrated at a #3 i was watching doc or lcn there was a video on them
I would try Teflon tape on the threads to fix a leak like that. I have the Ortho, but have only used it once. No complaints so far.
That's a good idea. But for as much as I use these things it would wear pretty quick and I would have to replace it regularly.
@@JimmyLewisMows You might want to see if you can find a rubber o ring or gasket.
Does the ortho product produce foam for car washing? Using turtle wax soap
It doesn't. I use this one and it works well. There are better car wash soaps out there that foam up better, too. amzn.to/3eNgby1
My ortho has been bullet proof. I actually like the trigger.
For the sake of this video I prefer the Ortho over the Chameleon but... I prefer the Simple Lawn Solution Spray Bottles over both the Ortho and the Chameleon. Only downfall with the SLS Spray Bottle is there’s no adjustments so you need to conform to its pace instead of the other way around.
Yeah those bottles are good, but like you said you are kind of at their mercy. Pros and cons.
instead of a regular hose gasket did you try an oring style water hose gasket. They sell them at ACE
Yes
Chapin makes a hose end sprayer too. I like it better compared to the two in the video.
I’ll have to give it a try s as well
Great comparison. I use the Ortho but may give the Chameleon a shot. Also I heard of a hose end sprayer called the “Blue Mule Spray All 50B” Has anyone tried it ?
I’ve heard of it too. Different ballpark compared to these guys, but might be worth a future video!
Jimmy Lewis ... Yes I agree, I forgot to mention it is a bit pricey.
Unfortunately I just broke my 25 year old Ortho sprayer which matched your wish list- great spray pattern, round bottle, easy trigger, and no leaks.
Have you used the K1 sprayer?
Yeah some products are shipped with that type of sprayer. They work well. You only get a single flow rate though and it’s really fast.
Just purchased the chameleon and I can’t get the top to close snugly on the bottle. There aren’t enough threads on the bottle, or they are just poorly matched. This is crazy… I can’t even use it bc the top detaches every time.
Any one else have this problem?
What setting should you put it on [the chameleon]? Teas. Table spoon ounces?
I typically set it at 4oz
@@JimmyLewisMows 4oz.. for a large area or just standard?
I have always liked playing with my hose.
🤦♂️
I don't use hose end sprays, i refuse to be forced to drag a hose around my yard, instead i bought a small scotts battery 2g sprayer on Amazon and that works prefect for my small yard. I can spray w/o having to constantly pump it
I’ve had the chameleon spray jar blow off of the hose quick connection. Anyone else?
I have the Chameleon and two different brands of hoses for the front and rear of the house. For some reason, one hose leaks and the other one doesn't. 🤔
Haha! So strange.
I hate screwing in the tank on the ortho...such a pain
yeah it's pretty bad.
Maybe I’m crazy but I keep a different product in each of three ortho sprayers. I dump the concentrate it in the spring and shake it up before each use.
Yes, sort of excessive but no reattaching, using the wrong setting, leaking, etc. Still cheaper and better than a lawn service. I use ortho.
How many gallons of water will get with the ortho in a minute at zero setting?
Flow rate is 2gpm no matter what the dial is set to. The setting on the dial indicates the number of ounces of product come up from the container per gallon. So, for example, setting the dial to 4oz will suck up 8oz of product from the container per minute.
@@JimmyLewisMows ok
I would recommend testing your flow rate. I just started using the ortho with N-Ext products and watched several videos that suggested 2 gpm. I did a couple applications and was running out of product too soon, at first just assumed I was not being consistent with the walking pace i use when applying - about 1 minute per thousand sq ft. Went ahead and tested and I am getting 3 gpm. I have now found a couple others videos that state 3 gpm flow rate as well. I do have higher than average water pressure @ 80 psi so maybe this hinders any internal mechanism that attempts to keep a standardized flow.
I have already ordered another sprayer just to rule out a defect in my current one
@@joshfox73 thanks
We like the ortho, but it need a spray lock to lock it in the on position.
Yes that would be a helpful feature!
I bought Chameleon sprayer one time used n like But I try to use second time mixer was not working intead during used tank was over fillings. I buy another Chameleon same happen again so I would recommend Chameleon it's totally trash. I will check Ortho then let you know comments
I just bought the chameleon. It leaked worse than yours did during my first use. Oh well, at least it was cheap.
Watched the whole video and no answer as to which 1 is better
Chameleon is what I prefer. It's $3.50 cheaper and mine has never leaked. I agree about the shower spray pattern, but if you're using a hose end sprayer you're not nearly concerned about consistency. If you really were you would use a backpack sprayer.
I wonder if I got a faulty one with the leak? Might have to pick up another one and give it another shot. The spray isn't about consistency at all. But I do plan to use a backpack sprayer in the future for things.
@@JimmyLewisMows perhaps? Or maybe I got lucky with a good one. Ideally you're right. If another company could mash up the best of each hose-end sprayer they would have a real winner. It's honestly surprising we haven't seen this yet.
I have used those and some other no name brands over the years and they all suck in some way or another. Hey, there you go Jimmy! Here is your chance to build a better mouse trap and make some money! Take the best of all and put it together to make the daddy of em all hose end sprayer, .....and hose the competition! Pun intended of course!
The Chameleon sprayer clogged the first time I used it. Depressurized it and tried several times to get it working without success. If you buy this product make sure you save you receipt. Unfortunately mine is in the trash.
I just put my second one in the trash. Bummer.
remove the white flow restrictor on the Chameleon and then use the gasket. Also, if you don't want to do that, just use plumbers tape. #NoLeak
First Aussie 😁
Striperman, looking after 6 yr old Lara today and she has me on the go already.I can’t work out what colour dress my barbie has too wear, Lara knows and is helping me. 😳😂

#teamortho
I need one for urine. Thats going to spray about 10:1 ratio for pee
If only it were possible to create a Frankenstein build out of both sprayers.
Nothing is impossible!
The difficulty with screwing the top onto the tank is ridiculous. I guess Ortho didn't do any prototype testing with that before they went into production.
I have the same issue with the chameleon, what are at missing?
Does it work fine when hose is on due to pressure?
@spardo once I get the top screwed on it works fine for me.
@@TheDylan6908 I couldn’t get the threads to lock tight. Think I may have had a defective bottle. What was your problem?
@@Spardo just getting the threads to line up so I could screw the top on.
@@TheDylan6908 For the life of me I can't get them to hold. I screw it on, as usual, it gets tight, but then if I go too far it seems to loose the grip entirely and I have to start over. Moreover, even when it's tight, the top pops off the threading with even a small touch. People will probably read this thread and think I'm a dummy. It must be deffective. lol
In before Brett.
Did you see that you won the spreader over on my channel??? Cause that definitely didnt happen.
I'm seeing actual lawn care businesses according to their name chiming in on this. If I paid someone to do this and they showed up at my house with an Ortho bottle...I would be finding a real company to do the work
The nice thing about this community is there are pros out there that support what DIYers like me are doing. I would never expect them to use this equipment, and I know they don’t. But they do offer great insights and experience and I’m grateful for what they do to help educate and support the DIY community.
I found the Chameleon leaked on me as well. Bad deal!
Glad I’m not the only one.
I'm a gal using the Chameleon. I too faced the "leak issue" on the hose connector. Well....I fiddled with the black tip and round cap and managed to tighten it up to a tightness that stopped any hose leaks!! Might have been a fluke but my Chameleon is just fine now. The spray head on the Chameleon is not good, but I manage using the shower option to add feed to my not too large lawn. The company that comes up with "the dream model" of one of these devices.....no leaks, spot-on accurate mixing, fantastic EVEN spray head, good holding handle, easy and light on the finger trigger, transparent good quality container, only have to buy ONE EVER - will MAKE AN ABSOLUTE FORTUNE!! Lol.
Dude is it me or do you follow the rest of the lawn care channels here?
I follow a good chunk of them, yes.
where do you live? I cannot help being distracted by the peaceful snow mountain behind you.
Utah
I used the cameleon recently and it sucks big time. The spray pattaron sucks big time. Will not used it again.
Agree
PITTL
Use Teflon tape on the chameleon.
Thank you. I thought this video one boring. But. It’s very very informative
I hate hose end sprayers!
Ortho made a huge mistake changing the design. Ortho used to be just like the chameleon.
I hate all hose end sprayers period lol
😂
